Convert MKV to QT?

I did search but cannot find anything that specifically addresses the proble of "converting" MKV files to QT.
I can play the mkv's that I have using videolan, or MPlayer, but I want to be able to get them into a QT format. I have QT 7 Pro; I also have Flip4Mac which handles WMV conversions very well. But not, it seems, mkv.
Any help with converting? Thanks

Quote from the mkvextract man page at:
http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/doc/mkvextract.html
The decision about the output format is based on the track type, not on the extension used for the output file name. The following track types are supported at the moment:
V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC
H.264 / AVC video tracks are written to H.264 elementary streams which can be processed further with e.g. MP4Box from the GPAC package.
V_MS/VFW/FOURCC
Fixed FPS video tracks with this CodecID are written to AVI files.
V_REAL/*
RealVideo tracks are written to RealMedia files.
A_MPEG/L3, A_AC3
These will be extracted to raw MP3 and AC3 files.
A_PCM/INT/LIT
Raw PCM data will be written to a WAV file.
A_AAC/MPEG2/*
All MPEG2 AAC files will be written into an AAC file with ADTS headers before each packet.
A_AAC/MPEG4/*
All MPEG4 AAC files will be written into an AAC file with ADTS headers before each packet. The ADTS headers will not contain the deprecated emphasis field.
A_VORBIS
Vorbis audio will be written into an Ogg/Vorbis file.
A_REAL/*
RealAudio tracks are written to RealMedia files.
A_TTA1
TrueAudio tracks are written to TTA files. Please note that due to Matroska’s limited timecode precision the extracted file’s header will be different regarding two fields: data_length (the total number of samples in the file) and the CRC.
S_TEXT/UTF8
Simple text subtitles will be written as SRT files.
S_TEXT/SSA, S_TEXT/***
SSA and *** text subtitles will be written as SSA/*** files respectively.
Tags are converted to a XML format. This format is the same that mkvmerge supports for reading tags.
Attachments are written to they output file as they are. No conversion whatsoever is done.
Chapters are converted to a XML format. This format is the same that mkvmerge supports for reading chapters. Alternatively a stripped-down version can be output in the simple OGM style format.
Timecodes are first sorted and then output as a timecode v2 format compliant file ready to be fed to mkvmerge. The extraction to other formats (v1 and v3) is not supported.
EXAMPLES
Let’s assume you’ve made a Matroska file with one video track, two audio tracks and two subtitle tracks, and you need the second audio track and the first subtitle track. So first fire up mkvmerge with the --identify option:
$ mkvmerge -i movie.mkv
File ’movie.mkv’: container: Matroska
Track ID 1: video (V_MS/VFW/FOURCC, DIV3)
Track ID 2: audio (A_MPEG/L3)
Track ID 3: audio (A_VORBIS)
Track ID 4: subtitles (S_TEXT/UTF8)
Track ID 5: subtitles (S_TEXT/UTF8)
Now you can call mkvextract like this:
$ mkvextract tracks movie.mkv 3:audio.ogg 4:subtitles.srt
Another example. Let’s assume you have a Matroska file with one RealVideo v10 track, one Vorbis audio track and one RealAudio (COOK) track. The identification output might look like this:
$ mkvmerge -i movie2.mkv
File ’movie2.mkv’: container: Matroska
Track ID 1: video (V_REAL/RV40)
Track ID 2: audio (A_VORBIS)
Track ID 3: audio (A_REAL/COOK)
Let’s further assume you want only need the video and the RealAudio track but both in the same output file. This is possible for RealMedia files by using the same output name for those tracks that you want to end up in the same file:
$ mkvextract tracks movie2.mkv 1:extracted.rm 3:extracted.rm
Sometimes the raw data of a track might even be useful, e.g. for MPEG-1 tracks. In this case you can use a track flag like this:
$ mkvextract tracks movie3.mkv --fullraw 1:extracted.mpeg
If you need the timecodes for all the blocks of track 2 from a file then you can let mkvextract create a timecode v2 format file like this:
$ mkvextract timecodes_v2 input.mkv 2:timecodes-track2.txt

I have just asked a question about downloading MacKeeper elsewhere - why do you say not to download it? Does it not work or is it malicious?
Do you have any others suggestions for cleaning up my laptop and desktop? Both running OS 10.6.8 and both seem a bit slow to me, especially when I have multiple applications open.

  • Can Quicktime Pro convert .mkv video formats to mp4 video formats

I purchased Quicktime Pro believing it could convert .mkv video formats to MP4 video formats, however, the resulting output file is just a 60kb file from an original 971,936 kb file.
I registered the key as given to me in the purchase receipt email, I used Export to MRP, I selected the input .mkv file. All seemed to be OK until it ended creating the short 60kb file.
    Suggestions please.

As indicated on the Apple web site, keying the QT Player for "Pro" use merely unlocks editing and conversion features built into the app but not available without the key. It does not add any new file type or codec support beyond that for which the QT Player is already configured on your platform.
I registered the key as given to me in the purchase receipt email, I used Export to MRP, I selected the input .mkv file. All seemed to be OK until it ended creating the short 60kb file.
An MKV file will convert only if you have support for both the MKV file container (which is not natively QT compatible) and codecs to handle the specific codecs contained in the MKV file container if available for QT use.
    Suggestions please.
I do not normally use MKV files on a daily basis and so, on those occasions when I do need to use them as a source for conversions to mobile devices, I use the free HandBrake application. As I see it, you can either try to add the missing support needed to use QT 7 Pro or you could download HandBrake for iTunes managed/mobile device files or use FFmpeg (on which HandBrake is based) for more general target conversions. As a non-PC user, I am assuming here that the Windows versions of both the HandBrake and FFmpeg apps have the same features as are available in the Mac versions of these apps.

  • How to convert mkv files into dvd reader compatible format

Hi there!  that's my first discussion ever in this community. Hope you can help me and I thank you by now for support.
    My question is pretty simple.
How can I convert a full HD .mkv file into something compatible with DVD readers for home use ( mpeg, avi etc.. ), keeping full HD quality ?
Assuming that I'm a beginner in codec, video converting operations and all stuff like that....
    1) I'm using OSX 10.8.5  Mountain Lion
    2) I tried using VLC 2.1 but result was pretty bad ( blurry video quality and no sound at all... starting from a perfect mkv source )
    3) I tried with Divx Plus Converter 10 having error 2
As I will be converting videos rarely I'm looking for a free solution...  Any idea ??
    Thanks

It could be a 'difficult' form of Matroska file. FYI Matroska is just a container like MOV or AVI, and some mkv have the video encoded with Real Video Codec (RV9 RV10). Perian+QT can't decode this, but VLC will play .mkv files just fine on OS X, as long as they don't use H.264!
It's a bit of a lottery until Matroska decide to support the Apple platform. I have found this:
    http://mkv4mac.free.fr/index.php?lang=en&p=lec
    which may help.
But there may be another workaround: 1. Get Info the mkv file
    2. Change to extension to wmv. Save as wmv and that could work better.
Recently, a poster (ZachP14) suggested this:

  • Program for converting mkv to fce 4 format

Im looking for a program that can convert a 720p mkv (avc/ac3) to an editible format in FCE 4. I want to keep the quality hd after conversion. I've looked on google, but there's so many **** programs, and convoluted ways of doing this. Does anyone know of a simple program that will do this without too much trouble? Preferably free.

He says that '-me' is not a known option. (And I didn't find anything about it in the man page)
    Did you tried without it?
By the way your video stream is already h264, you don't need to recode it again. "-vcodec copy" should be fine.
Try to write options to ffmpeg yourself. I don't know the application of almost every parameter.

  • Convert MKV to MP4 or WMV with PrE

I would like to convert a .MKV video file into a .WMV or .MP4, since the video cannot be read by standard hardware as it is.
I tried to open it with Premiere Elements, but it couldn't be read by PrE, so I cannot export as a different format. Is there any work around to this?

    DeverK
    Thanks for the follow up.
From the looks of it, you can convert to MKV (if you wanted that file extension) or MP4 with the free HandBrake.
I have used HandBrake (Windows) for conversion to H.264.mp4 with constant frame rate, when the counterpart with variable frame rate
would not work in Premiere Elements or when it imported but with audio out of sync.
It appears that with the choice of MP4 as the container format (file extension), the choice of video codec is described
    H.264 (x264)
    MPEG-4 (FF mpeg)
    MPEG-2 (FF mpeg)
whereas, with the choice of MKV as the container format (file extension), the choice of video codec is described
    H.264 (x264)
    MPEG-4 (FF mpeg)
    MPEG-2 (FF mpeg)
    VP3 (theora)
We will be watching for your progress with this when you have the time.

Apologies if this question is already listed, I did have a look and the only reference I could find was archived and dated 2007.
I am looking for software which will convert an MKV file to AVI. Ideally, a shareware product would be more suitable than having to purchase a product as it is probably only a one-off project. Can anyone please recommend a good converter either shareware or inexpensive version. I am using a MacBookPro 10.9.1 with Mavericks

  • How to use .MKV and .ISO with Premiere Pro? They are not supported.

Hi all. My brother in-law sent us two .mkv videos and a DVD .iso he wants me to use in a video I am cutting for him. The only trouble is, I've no idea how to get them into a format PremPro can handle.
I've searched and the only solutions I have found are infinitely complicated for me. Avisynth is certainly beyond me.
Anyone know of a way to convert .mkv (info lists 942x720 H.264 4:2:0 YUV MPEG4 AVC) into something useable?
Same question for an ISO file.
    Thanks much
By the way, this is not for anything 'important' nor am I getting paid, so I have no budget tp purchase software. I am sure there must be a free solution.
I tried this trial version software...
    http://www.moyea.com/import-flv/
But it would NOT install. It just errored in a loop and was unable to find or understand I have CS5 PremPro.

Can anyone explain how to use VLC to transcode? The settings are endless and NONE look correct. Everything is about coverting and shrinking and that is not what I want.
I have looked into this so many times and cannot find how to do it. I know it must be simple, but clearly I am blind.
What I need is to take whatever is inside that stupid MKV wrapper and extract it. Transcode it. I have been trying for A YEAR now and have never been able to find a solution.
I'm on a PC and unfortunately, there are free solutions for a MAC. But that won't help me.
EDIT: One option I see is tsMuxer! But which setting for Output? I can choose...
TS muxing... or M2TS musing... or Blu-ray disk... or AVCHD disk... or DEMUX
To explain more, I have a Blu-Ray I purchased and want to add the audio from my laserdisc, since the remixed audio on the disc sucks (hard). I'll also add English subtitles. To be clear, this work is for ME for my own personal use.
Here is a screen grab from tsMuxer. Which to choose? I will place the audio and video in Premiere Pro. Sync the old Laserdisc audio up and then EXPORT to Adobe Encore to burn a new BD.

  • Trouble shoot Issue in QT Pro: I have sound but no Video after convert

I hope this hasn't been answered somewhere else if so I apologize. I have been using QuickTime Pro to convert .mkv files to .mp4. I muxed them with MkvMerge. Then I open them in QuickTime Pro and export as a mp4 for Ps3 playback. They are 1080p Hd movie files and I have had no problems until today. I have one mkv that when converted to mp4 plays only sound and no video. Its just a black screen. I checked the muxed files when I open them in QT Pro and they work fine so its only after I convert the .mka to .mp4 that I have the video issue. I've already done a few other files so I don't know why this isn't working? Any ideas?
