Converting a number column to a varchar2

Hi ,
We are on 11.2.0.2 on Solaris 10. I have a need to convert a column which is a number data type to a VARCHAR2 data type. The table has data and the column is part of the primary key. Is it possible? How best can one go about it?
SQL>  create table test1
(object_name varchar2(30) NOT NULL, object_id number NOT NULL);

SQL>ALTER TABLE TEST1 add(constraint test1_pk primary key (OBJECT_NAME,OBJECT_ID));

You can use following steps:
1. create a new temporary column of right data type in existing table
2. copy existing data to new temp. column
3. drop table primary key
4. nullify all data in current column
5. change current column data type
6. copy data from temp. column to current column
7. drop temporary column
8. add primary key
Example:
SQL> create table t(x number primary key);
Table created.
SQL> insert into t values(1);
1 row created.
SQL> insert into t values(2);
1 row created.
SQL> commit;
Commit complete.
SQL> --
SQL> alter table t add (tmp varchar2(10));
Table altered.
SQL> update t set tmp = x;
2 rows updated.
SQL> commit;
Commit complete.
SQL> alter table t drop primary key;
Table altered.
SQL> update t set x = null ;
2 rows updated.
SQL> commit;
Commit complete.
SQL> alter table t modify (x varchar2(10));
Table altered.
SQL> update t set x=tmp;
2 rows updated.
SQL> alter table t drop column tmp;
Table altered.
SQL> alter table t add primary key(x);
Table altered.
SQL> --
SQL> desc t
Name                                      Null?    Type
X                                         NOT NULL VARCHAR2(10)
SQL> select * from t;
X
1

    It's working fine for static cases.If the first column is dynamic then how come i will resolve it.
    Example:
    Create table mytab (ID_C Varchar2(15),Value_N Number);
    Records Population into MyTab table is dynamic.
    Insert into mytab values('HO',5000);
    Insert Into mytab values('PG1',2400);
    Insert Into mytab values('PG2',3000);
    Insert Into mytab values('PG3',800);
    Commit;
    SQL> Select * From MyTab;
    IDC_ ValueN_
    HO 5000
    PG1 2400
    PG2 3000
    PG3 800
    Then My expected result will be as follows
    HO PG1 PG2 PG3

  • Optimize function to correct a string to be converted to number

    Hi,
    I have imported almost 6.5 milion rows into a table (using sql loader) from a flat file (which contains the NUL caracter (ASCII 0) - not space, not NULL). To make the load easier I set the datatype as VARCHAR2 for all columns. For columns with string data I used a TRIM(REPLACE(field,' ','')) to get rid of the NUL and it works.
    But for the column that must be converted to numeric I am trying to use to_number () function and it fails because the numeric data is mixed with other characters.
    To solve this problem I created this function :

    The main idea is to check every string (the parameter will be the value from the Amount column) for permitted characters that compose a numeric value:
    1. To begins with numeric, '-' or '.'
    2. To have only one '.' (as a decimal separator);
    3. To compare every character of the string with the permitted ones - the non-compliant will be rejected
    This way the resulting string (v_output_string) will be successfully converted to number
    I admit that I don't have much experience using PL/SQL that is why I am asking your help to optimize this function to improve its performance. Could you help me on this, please ?

    Perform a function here on all 6.5 million of rows will never be efficient.
    I would modify Peter's approach a little bit,
    1. Load directly into staging t1 without any checking (or create an external table)
    2. Transfer from t1 to a list partitioned t2 with list values in ('yes', 'no','null','other')
    --simple check using translate()
    3. Apply your special function only on rows in the 'other' partition (hopefully much fewer rows left)
    --other checks

    The multi_column_datastore says that the text to be indexed should be fetched from the supplied COLUMNS list rather than from the actual column the index is created on.
    So in this case we're fetching the contents of "theNumber" column, converting it to text, and indexing it.
    You don't necessarily need a dummy column, if "a_title" is a varchar column you could create the index on that instead.
    For example:
    SQL> create table mytab( a_id number, a_code number, a_title varchar2(80), a_subtitle varchar2(80), a_info clob );
    Table created.
    SQL> insert into mytab values ( 12, 9812376, 'foo is the title',
      2  'foobar is the subtitle', 'the info column will not be indexed' );

    What was the problem in the template? I am facing the same error, when I put a conditional in the data field, it throws the XML-22036: (Error) Cannot convert to number.

  • Concurrency exception because of number columns

    Hi,
    When fill a DataSet with Number columns that are not expressable by a double (whithin .NET), because of to much decimals behind the '.'
    DataAdapter can't update this row when implementing optimistic concurrency:
    UPDATE ... WHERE IDcol=idval AND ora_number_col=dotnet_double_val
    Is there a way to arrange the different resolution without rounding functions in the where clause?

    You can view tracks in a given format by selecting to show the Kind column. If you mean you want to determine which specific MP3 tracks you have that were converted by iTunes as opposed to being imported in MP3 format, Get Info on a track and look at the "encoded with" field.

    I need to convert a number like '10.02' to a floating point number with 9 decimal values like '10.022111221'. I think that the right function is TO_BINARY_FLOAT, but how can I obtain 9 decimal values? If I use the following syntax:

    I obtain a floating point values with a variable number of decimal numbers after the ".", instead I need 9 number after ".".

    the number I need to select is the result of a product, for example:
    select (Num_A * Num_B) from Table;
    Num_A has 2 decimal numbers, like 12.01 and Num_B could be: 12.111111111.
    Now, Num_A * Num_B = 653.999999994
    but I issue:
    select TO_BINARY_FLOAT(54.00 * 12.111111111) from Table
    I obtain:
    654, a rounded value, but I need 653.999999994.

    My basic problem is, I am using a custome format:
    #,##0.00,,,%;
    Here main task is done by ,,,%.
    Each comma (,) is dividing a number by 1000. Thus three commas are dividing a number by 10^9 digits.
    But I need number in crore (i.e. 10^7), Thus we have used this percent sign (%).
    Here I can get required Value but appended percent (%) to it. I can temporary hide this using wrap text.
