Converting CHAR type to other data types

Dear SDN users,
would any of you know how to convert a CHAR data type to other data types for example hexadecimal etc., and convert them back? I suspect there must be some standard FMs available.

Hello smitha ,
I suppose you are assigning some variable of char type to a variable of integer type it will automaticaly (implicitly ) convert the type .
in some case we need to change the type explicitly like the above mentiioned .

I'm still struggling with the same cube and this is my 3rd post and once i fix some thing the other breaks. Please forgive me. When i process my cube i'm getting the error:
Errors in the back-end database access module. OLE DB was unable to convert a value to the data type requested for column 5.
My question is when the error says column 5 (is it the column 5 in the DSV?) or is it the column 5 in the DIMENSION list?
My next question is the DSV Query works perfectly fine , so why this error in cube? This is what i have in the query in DSV.
Please need help. In the below query both the column 5 (ArEASSIGNED TO VENDOR) in the CUBE and underlying table have the same data type and length VARCHAR(4000). Why is the process failing still?

I just counted the columns from the top:
1) compliancejoin, 2) mowingsector, 3) caseclosedflag, 4) casehasvendorinfo, 5) mowingstatus, 6) assignedtovendor.
I see now that your subject line talks about column 6, but you say column 5 in body of your original post.
I don't know anything about cubes, but apparently there is some mapping problem when you run it from SSAS. (I assume it is SSAS, a part of the product I'm entirely ignorant of.) I figured that if you had got tripped by the zero-based numbering, you
might be staring on the wrong column.

I just counted the columns from the top:
1) compliancejoin, 2) mowingsector, 3) caseclosedflag, 4) casehasvendorinfo, 5) mowingstatus, 6) assignedtovendor.
I see now that your subject line talks about column 6, but you say column 5 in body of your original post.
I don't know anything about cubes, but apparently there is some mapping problem when you run it from SSAS. (I assume it is SSAS, a part of the product I'm entirely ignorant of.) I figured that if you had got tripped by the zero-based numbering, you
might be staring on the wrong column.

Function module to convert character type to required data type

Is there a function module which can convert data in character type to any other required data type?
Like i have a date 12.2.2008 and it is stored as character now i want to convert it into type d.
so that when i use
Describe field <field_name> type <type>.
statement afterwards then it gives me D not C as its data type.
The requirement does'nt stick to conversion of just one data type.I need an FM which can convert data in character type to any data type.

I am creating a message type in XI corresponding to a ABAP structure. There are couple of data types on the ABAP side (for example: RAW, QUAN, CURR CUKY, UNIT, NUMC etc) which i have no idea on what it should be mapped to on the XI side(xsd:string, xsd:token, xsd:int etc).
Is there is any document on mapping from ABAP data type to XML data type ? if yes please send it across.([email protected])
if no doc available, if some body could let me know what these ABAP data type would map on the XI side it would great.

just some more background information to the data types CURR, CUKY, QUAN, UNIT:
1) Each field of data type CURR must be assigned to a field of data type CUKY (the financial amount must be assigned to a currency) and each field of data type QUAN must be assigned to a field of data type UNIT (each quantity must have a dimension). If you want to know this assignment for your specific ABAP structure, you can find it using transaction SE11 with your ABAP structure and go to the tab Currency/Quantity fields. Here you find the information under Reference table and Ref. field.
2) The default number of decimals for a field of data type CURR is 2, but this can be overwritten by the assigned CUKY field. You can check the actual number of decimals for a specific currency with transaction OY04. Here are all currency list that do not have 2 decimals.
3) The default number of decimals for a field of data type QUAN is 3, but this can be overwritten by the assigned UNIT field. You can check the actual number of decimals for a specific unit with transaction CUNI. Click on Units of measurement (pick the correct dimension first), double click on your unit and you find the info in the field Decimal places.
4) Depending on the data you receive your conversions can get quite tricky. Lets take as an example a field of type CURR. If you find the value 1000 in there, this would convert to 10.00 USD if the assigned CUKY field contains the value USD (US dollar). But the same value ca represent 1000 JPY (Japanese Yen) if the assigned CUKY field contains the value JPY. What i try to say is that the value in the field of type CURR alone does not give you the actual amount, you have to know the value of the CUKY field as well. Similar for QUAN and UNIT.

Problem regarding change of data type x to data type c

Is there any way to change the data type x to data type c.

When I do syntax check in ECC6.0 it's showing the error "w_end_record" must be Character type(C,N,D,T).The error is due to Unicode.
I was using the class CL_ABAP_CHAR_UTILITIES but I am not able to find out appropriate attributes for it. Can anybody tell me the solution to resolve the problem.
Is there any other to solve the problem.

CONVERT TEXT TAB-TEXT INTO SORTABLE CODE TAB-XTEXT.

Duration as a timestamp? How odd, most people would store it
as an integer. Or, if you want to build your own string, the syntax
is {ts 'yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss'}. The seconds might not be required.
In any event, use createodbcdatetime() for the value you want
to put into your table.

How to invoke services with javabeans type or other customer type??

The error doesnt seem to be related to the JavaBean.
You can try changing the syncMaxWaitTime in the BPEL Console.

I'm a beginner. I try to make a program. But I don't know how to convert from string to data type. I try to make a calculator with GUI window. And when somebody put "+" to one of the window, I just want to convert it to Character instead of String.

Error in converting character string to smalldatetime data type

I've installed SQL Server 2000 on my new laptop and Crystal Report XI, out of sudden, the Crystal Report to certain view can't run and I got the following error:
Details: 22007 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL SERVER]Syntax Error cnverting character string to smalldatetime data type.
Any suggestions?

What confused me is that it works fine with my previous laptop. I wonder if there is any patch in Crystal Report or SQL server that used to support certain functions but not support them anymore....

Crystal reports converting varchar 254 to memo data type

Hi All,
We are still using Seagate Crystal Reports 7.5 for some of our reporting. I have a problem that hopefully someone can help with. One of our connections is to ODBC- AR System ODBC Data Source.
In that data source there are fields defined as varchar 254 (confirmed by DBA),
But Seagate is calling them memo fields- which is causing problems since you canu2019t use memos in selection criteria or formulas.
This happened after the field names were renamed. I noticed when the newly named fields were not showing as an option to map the old name fields to- because by default it looks for same data type, after unchecking same data type option the fields showed for mapping but wrong data type makes them useless. I canu2019t even convert them to string with formula field.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Yup, this was a problem with versions prior to 10. If a field was longer than 254 characters, Crystal handled them like Memos and you cannot use them in formulas.
The only suggestion I can offer would be to upgrade. Crystal can now use memos in formulas and no longer has a 254 character limit on strings. So your charcter fields will remain as charater and not changed to Memos.

Hi, I am unable to resolve this error and would like some assistance please.
The below query produces the following error message -
Msg 245, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Conversion failed when converting the varchar value 'NCPR' to data type int.

However, when I run the query below I get the results shown in the image . Ie. nothing. Pc1 & Pc2 are aliases and are the same table and the assess field is an int. I found NCPR in one cell but that column (prop) is not used in the query. The table
is nearly 25k rows.

WHERE ISNUMERIC(id) = 1 and there are obviously no 'NCPR' records in the view as per my previous post.
That is a bad assumption - SQL Server does not have to evaluate the query in the order you are expecting it to.
Take this simple example

Hi, I am working on a report which is off of survey information and I am using dynamic pivot on multiple columns.
I have questions like Did you use this parking tag for more than 250 hours? If yes specify number of hours.
and the answers could be No, 302, 279, No and so on....
All these answers are of varchar datatype and all this data comes from a partner application where we consume this data for internal reporting.
When I am doing dynamic pivot I get the below error.

How to convert object type to only Date type ?

I have a table in database and their is column called as date and its data type is DateTime
In my UI part i have taken a Datepeacker and what ever user selected that date i am storing in my Date properties which has the same data type DateTime and at the Insertion time the date inserting successfully but at the time of updating data i am getting
error that the Date is not correct format because in date property it having the value 23:12:2014 00:00:00 which is crate problem at the time of update. So how to solve this ?
Note : I am using VS2008 and using Datagrid inside datgrid what ever changes user make tat one i required to update ,below are my update code which done through datatable i.e

You could use the yyyy-MM-dd format by calling the ToString method on the DateTime object:

Note that you should use parameters when create a command like this though:

How to use the JE database with other data types than byte arrays?

Hi! I searched the javadoc of Berkley DB JE, for a way to introduce entry (but I need also retrieve) data with other type than byte arrays, e.g. String, or anything else, as int may be, etc.
Still, I didn't find any such way, because the main (only?!) method to entry data into an open database - according what I found in javadoc - is:
"public OperationStatus put(Transaction txn, DatabaseEntry key, DatabaseEntry data) throws DatabaseException"
and both this and the corresponding method for retrieves, are based on the same DatabaseEntry type, which allow only entry data on byte[] support.
What if I need to use Strings or int, or even char? I must do a special conversion from these types, to byte[], to use the database?
