How to stop Preview from changing resolution when converting JPEGs into PDF

I am combining several JPEGs of identical resolution into a PDF using Preview, using either the sidebar or Automator action (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11893607). For some reason, Preview changes the resolution of the PDF so viewing it at actual size (100% zoom) is bigger and pixellated. Example: a 960x600 JPEG becomes approx 1355x845. I figured it had something to do with dpi and indeed if I do the calculation and open up each JPEG in Photoshop and resize (without resampling, i.e. without changing pixels) to 101.5, the resulting PDF is pretty close to what it should be. (Calculation = 1355/960 * 72dpi.) But the slight resize and recompression lowers quality, plus it's a huge pain to go through all of that for every image.
This issue is the same for simple saving a single image, the combining and use of Automator script has no impact.
My question, in summary: how do I get Preview to save a JPEG as a PDF without changing its resolution?

I have the same problem. I have a bunch of scanned documents (jpeg), and have been trying to make them a multi page document, instead of 20+ images.
Using the Automator "New PDF from Images" preview action v1.0, supplied by Apple with Snow Leopard, and I am able to convert the images to a PDF.
Using these images, the first page being 1032 x 1600 pixels, and telling the automator action to +size each page to fit image+, I convert them into a PDF.
Converted PDF is viewable here.
The original JPG is clearly higher resolution than the PDF, and the PDF loses the crispness of the original scan. Even using "+size each page to fit image+" does not make the page the original image size.
What's happening here, and does anyone know a better way to convert Jpegs to PDF on the Mac - and keep the image resolution? I don't care about files sizes here, but keeping resolution and maintaining quality.

Why do you want to convert a pic to pdf? You can send a jpeg, and jpeg is a standard method of sharing photos, whereas pdf is not.
IN any event, you can create a pdf in any app on your Mac simply by using the print dialogue - file -> Print, note the pdf options.

Adobe Reader does not do this conversion. Adobe Acrobat can convert JPEG to PDF or (much better) scan direct to PDF. Perhaps your scanner already comes with software that makes PDF files - some do, but unless that software is Acrobat it's not really our field.

I need to convert a piece of work, designed through 'My Thoughts' app into either a .jpeg or .pdf format in order to send to Staples to have it printed off - have clicked on save but these two options are not included ... any ideas?

I don't have "My Thoughts" but you should be able to command-P and then at the bottom of the print screen you'll see PDF and you can just save as PDF from there.
All of my printers (including Staples) require PDF documents these days.

Then from the Preview menu bar click > File > Export

I've just read a footnote in the API documentation which indicates that the transformPDF function cannot be used for this purpose:

I can't imagine any worse workflow than converting to JPEG to edit text, then back to PDF. Text in a PDF is a vector thing, smooth at all resolutions. And JPEG is made for photos. EVERY conversion to JPEG and back loses quality but how much loss there is will vary.
If you must go to an image format, try PNG.

The underlying gist is to simply Jpg to PDF Converter. It is a fundamental component. I decided that I wanted to have a bit of fun with this concept as well. It got a lot of media attention. In the past I used jpeg to pdf as an example.
This is as dark as pitch to me. I am quite aware of jpeg to pdf. That has been lip puckering good (The old gray horse just ain't what she used to be). I'm nearly done now. I have little sympathy for jpeg to pdf because it all can last for weeks and even months.
