Converting RAW images to black & white

Hello,
I am trying to use the Adobe RAW Converter of PSE 12 to convert a RAW image (that was shot in monochrome) to grayscale, BUT the grayscale tab is missing? Any idea, where this tabe went to?
Thanks you,
Karen

Try clicking the open image button (bottom right) to send the photo into the regular editor as an 8 bit file.
Then use the menu:
Image >> Mode

  • Convert color images to black&white bitmaps

    Hi,
I have black&white scans of public domain books (image format). I use an OCR software to convert them to indexable PDFs (image+text format). However, the OCRed PDFs are insanely big: a 27 MB scanned PDF leads to an indexable PDF of 728 MB! And unfortunately, my OCR software doesn't have output settings, so I have to find a way to compress the files using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro.
Using Advanced Options > Optimization does reduce the file size, but not significantly. The problem seems to be that my OCR software converts the black&white scans to color images, and encodes them as such inside the PDF. So I need a way to set the image modes back to black&white. I tried using the Advanced Options > Preflight dialog, and selecting "Convert to black&white". However, the resulting PDFs stay about the same size! It seems that "Convert to black&white" converts the images to grayscale, instead of to bitmap.
    Any help would be appreciated!

I mentioned "bitmaps", because when I open the original PDF and right-click a random page and select "Modify image..." and open the image in Photoshop, the mode is set to "Bitmap mode": meaning 1-bit mode, containing either black or white pixels. However, when I do "Modify image..." for the OCRed PDF, the mode is set to "RGB Color Mode". I think this explains, in part, the huge size of the OCRed PDF.
Maybe this table will make it more clear:
Original PDF (Bitmap Mode, 132 dpi)
    Size: 27 MB
OCRed PDF (RGB Color Mode, 300 dpi)
    Size: 728 MB
Now, from the table above, it's clear that I have to reduce the image resolution. So, using the Acrobat's PDF optimizer, I tried the following settings:
Optimized OCRed PDF: Try 1 (Downsample to 132 dpi, JPEG compression)
    Size: 733 MB
Optimized OCRed PDF: Try 2 (Downsample to 132 dpi, ZIP compression)
    Size: 449 MB
But 449 MB is still huge for a single book. And I don't want to reduce the resolution under 132 dpi, because I will loose quality. Clearly, if the original document is just 27 MB, I should be able to squeeze the OCRed document too. But I don't know how.

  • How to find out embedded raster image is Black&White or Color image?

Is there any possibility to find out the embedded raster image is Black&White, Gray image (or) Color image in "illustrator cs3" without using color mode shown in "document info" pannel. Kindly advice me, the possibilities and solution. And also any scripts avilable for this?
    Thanks.

Or you could select the embedded image, and open the Window>Document Info panel. Select Embedded Images from the fly out menu on the Document Info panel. This should give you the color mode and more info on the embedded file in question.

  • How do I convert raw images with side car to Dng and

How do I convert raw images with side car to Dng and preserve the sidecar info in the DNG?
I have tons of raws + xmp sidecars that i want to convert to dng, because the raws are from different camera brands and i want to get everything simplified. so that i do not have to worry if I will be able to access the raws in the future, if I decide I want to rework some of the files.
    T.I.A.

If the images are already in your catalog you can select them then choose Convert Photos to DNG from the Library menu. You'll be given the option of deleting the original raw files. Either way, Lr will only display the newly created DNG files.
The alternative, which is better suited to images not already in the catalog is to use the Adobe DNG Converter

plz help me out if possible with code(full if possible) and step by step description...

    Hi,
we can not do the homework for you but we can help you out to the right direction.
1- Get the input stream from the image file ( source )
InputStream is = new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream(
                        "C:\\tmp\\sasha.jpg"));
    2- Get your BufferedImage
    BufferedImage buffImage = ImageIO.read(is);
3- look at the API docs for BufferedImage it contains the image data ( Raster)
4- I have not looked at the source code for the JRAWIO but I think it uses javax.imageio.* as an underlying transformation engine

  • Converting Raw Images

I have photoshop elements 11.  How do I convert RAW images to jpeg.  I have over 800 to convert.

In the PSE Editor, select File->Process Multiple Files.
In general, I don't recommend bulk conversion of unedited RAWs to JPGs. You get the worst aspects of RAW and none of the benefits. The only time bulk conversion of unedited RAWs makes any sense at all is if you need to send them to someone else quickly.

  • Does Aperture 2 have a way of converting raw images to png or jpeg.

Does Aperture 2 have a way of converting raw images to png or jpeg

    That's why we're here
In regards to your original question converting RAW images to JPGs is one of Apertures reason for being. As Terrence stated once the image is in Aperture ad you've made chatterer adjustments you want to it you then can export the image in a wide array of formats, sizes and qualities depending on what you will be doing with the exported image.
The Aperture user manual is a good place to start, it's well written and has a lot of good info in it.
    Good luck

  • Converting RAW images from Nikon D7100

My PSE11 will not recognize/convert RAW images from new Nikon D7100 despite trying to download PSE update.  Have had NO prior problem with RAW using D80.  Help!

When you saying "trying to download PSE update" do you mean you're trying to do it manually? The best way is editor>help>updates. (Assuming this isn't the mac app store version, which is a whole 'nother story.)

  • How can I convert RGB Color to Black-White Color?

    Dear everyone!
I am using Photoshop CS5. I have got a file from my customer which is done as RGB and the resolution is 300dpi. There are black texts and color images in the file. I wish to print Black-White Process Film (1 black color), but I don't know how to solve it. I started converting my file to Grayscale and then the black texts are not black enough because it becomes lighter. When I go to Level and adjust the color, both the image and texts becomes darker. What must I do to make only texts blacker without effecting the image?
Please find the attached file for the reference.
For more information, please let me know.
    My Best Regards,

What file format was supplied to you? Was it truly RGB @ 300ppi or did you rasterize a PDF?
300ppi is lousy for text. You might converse with your customer to instruct them on the ideal way to supply a file to you.

  • Why is bridge not converting raw images to dng during upload after re-installation even though I have manually selected it to do so?

I have exhausted all options after re-install to get bridge uploader to convert my raw images to dng and need help!

    Hi Jeff,
    Thanks for following up.
Slowly I am learning about what is going on with my problem. I need to first further clarify my problem for you. I am new to both my iMac and its Version 10 of Photoshop. When I bought the CD set I thought that the term "premiere" referred to both Adobe Photoshop (stills) and Premiere (movies). Now I understand that it only refers to the movies. So, my problem rests with Photoshop. As just mentioned have just acquired my iMac and it does not seem to have a screen shot application. However, would you please take a look at the Tools panel in Photoshop? The icons for the brush tool, the eraser tool, and the smart brush tool all have a tiny black triangle in the lower right corner of the icon. It is my understanding that when I click on the eraser tool and should see three more icons pop up. They do not. So what is wrong? That is the source of my frustration with the product. I can't duplicate some of the instructions that I see in my book.
Again, thank you for your follow up.

  • Import an image to black&white into array

    Hello there.
I'm making a type of cutter, that cuts stamps out of potatos. Currently, the pattern is an array of booleans of 25x25, where you have to click what you want to see and then the program cuts it out. We'd like to add more functionality though, perhaps by allowing images to be imported and these should then get put in the array, according to black/white-scale.
I have absolutly no idea how I'd start doing anything like this.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
You should use the File Dialog VI. Provide it with a promt name (appears in the windows bar). pattern label (image type name), file patern (extention like *.bmp or *.jpg) and a start path (folder you would like to start in). You will now get a popup which starts in the folder you provided and limits to the extention you provided. Se VI attached (LV 2011) for an example.

  • Colour image on  black & white photograph

How can I convert a colour photograph to part black & white? I believe I need to de-saturate to start with, but that's as much as I know.

    John,
Since you asked about selection, here's an example using the Magic Wand and Selection Brush tools.
    http://home.earthlink.net/~msand42/PSE/Selection%20Brush/album/
In the 1st shot I used the Magnetic Lasso to select the cat. This  worked well since the outline of the cat contrasted with the background. For purposes of my example, I then cut off from the selection the top of his head and part of his paw, and selected a part of the blanket.
In the 2nd shot I activated the Selection Brush tool with the Mode option set to Mask and inverted the selection. Now the cat is masked in red.  Note that the default Overlay value is 50% so that you can see through the mask. You might need to modify the Overlay so that you can see enough detail to paint the mask (next step). As you can see, the two missing portions of the cat are not masked and the excess blanket is.
In the 3rd shot I painted to fill in the missing portions of the cat. To erase the excess on the blanket I held down <Alt> while painting.  You can adjust the size of the brush to get the necessary level of detail for painting.
In the 4th shot I inverted the selection and and set Mode to Selection to get back to the normal view showing the selected cat.
Of course if you have a steady hand you can simply draw the selection using the Lasso tool, but I wanted to demonstrate how you can fine-tune it with the Selection Brush.

  • Converting raw images to jpegs using PSE 11

I have started to capture only RAW images from my Sony NEX 7 camera. However, I wish to be able to send JPEG images to my friends ( prior to RAW editing ). How do I convert/copy my RAW images to JPEGs using PSE 11?
    Thanks
    Derek

After you're done in camera raw (or in your case, without doing anything, but you'll just get the default conversion, because you MUST convert the files), click the Open button, then save in the format of your choice in the editor. JPEG is an 8 bit format so you will want to either set the raw converter's pulldown menu to 8 bits or you will need to go to Image>Mode> 8 bits/channel in the editor. If you're emailing, you can also use Save for Web to size them down if necesary.
If you use the organizer, you can just use file>export as new files and be sure to send the jpgs someplace easy to find.
