Converting string inputs for command line to integers using parseInt()

Hi,
My program takes in an input from the command line - "args[0]".
This line is supposed to be an integer but of course I depending on the user entering the correct data which is never a good scenerio. I used the line "int year = Integer.parseInt(args[0]); I get an error though if the user enters something like "java myProgram Hello" instead of "java my Program 1982".
I want my program to continue running even if the input can't be converted to an integer. At the moment, it is terminating due to an invalid input. Is there anything I can do to keep this program running even if the input is invalid?
Thanks

Use a try/catch block
int year;
try {
   year = Integer.parseInt(args[0]);
} catch (NumberFormatException nfe) {
    System.err.println("Usage: java myProgram  {year}");
    System.exit(-1);
}

  • Problem with tokenized  input from command line

    I am trying to take an input from the command line, parse it to tokens and perform whatever operation is needed depending on the name of the token, on a binary tree of stacks for example, if i type 1 2 1 3 printLevelOrder, then the root of the tree should have 3, 2,1 in the stack, the left child should have 1 and the right child should be empty. and then a level order print of the tree should be performed.
    however what is happening when i run this code is the numbers are being put into the right stacks of the tree, but any commands such as printLevelOrder or PrintPopRoot are entering the code that is for placing numbers onto the stack instead of executing that command and skipping past this piece of code.
    so my question is, why is the if statement if (word =="printLevelOrder") not being executed when thats whats in the word ?
    example input and output shown below code fragment.
              try {

  • Comparing input from command line to a String token problem

    Hi,
    I want to compare my input from the command line to a token.
    my command line looks like "java myProgram george bush president washington"
    The next command could be "java myProgram geoge president washington"
    Basically I have a text file which has a name, job and location field. The text file looks as follows
    jim, farmer, chicago
    paul, builder, texas,
    george bush, president, washington
    I am using string tokenizer with a "," as my field delimiter.
    My lecturer wants me to take the input from the command line so applets are out of the question. However even though there are 3 fields, args.length() could equal 4 because "george bush" is only the name but george is args[0] and bush is args[1]. Is there a way to have a delimiter on the command line instead of a space such a ",". Can anyone see any other way around this?
    Thanks

  • Latest DNG converter not working in command-line mode

    Today I downloaded Adobe's latest DNG converter. It is failing with both .NEF and .CR2 files when run in command-line mode. It does appear to work in GUI mode. The switches+arguments I've used for my tests are:
    -u -e -p1 filename.CR2
    (or filename.NEF)
    With an older (CS2) version of the converter, the above arguments produce a .DNG output file as expected (with .CR2 files; I didn't try it with D3 .NEF files; surely that older version doesn't support the D3's format).
    With the very latest version, running the program with the above command produces no output. There's no error message.
    The 'readme' file that comes with the converter doesn't include any information about command-line usage, but I did find a PDF file covering this (adobe.com/products/dng/pdfs/dng_commandline.pdf). The switches+arguments shown in the PDF file appear to be exactly the ones I used in the past.
    I'm sure I'll need to use the most recent version to convert D3 RAW files. Is there something wrong with how I'm specifying its command-line switches/arguments?

    It struck me silly that I've been running tests with v.3.3 when 5.2 is the latest, so I downloaded it. The setup "wizard"...hmm, why is it a "wizard"? It provides no choice of installation path. I didn't realize this because immediately after I'd launched it, I knocked something onto the floor, reached down to pick it up ... and looked back up just in time to see the "wizard" complete the installation...but where, I didn't know. It didn't display any information about where it had installed the app. Adventures In Discoverability. :) I hunted around on the hard drive until I found it (C:\Program Files\Adobe -- well, at least you can launch it if you think to look for it in the 'Start' menu). So ... that needs a bit of work. Anyway, I copied the app into a directory of my choice -- one that's in my system's %PATH%, replacing spaces in the name with underscores. It works fine in that directory -- no problem with the name-change as far as I can tell. Now back to the fun stuff...
    This version doesn't seem to require a fully qualified path to the input file or to the output directory when "-d" is used. That's an improvement. IOW, this worked:
    converter -p1 -d DNG filename
    where "converter" is the program's name, "DNG" is the name of a subdirectory of the directory where I'm running the test, and "filename" is the name of a RAW file in that directory.
    The program still doesn't know how to create a directory (or ask about creating one if it doesn't exist). Fails silently if "-d" is used and the specified directory doesn't exist. But at least this version returns an exit code of 1 due to the failure -- better than returning 0.
    Still doesn't understand wildcards. Hope done sprang eternal there for a moment, but oh well. Back to "for" loops...
    Still fails silently, returning exit code 0 (oops), if a nonsensical command-line is used (e.g., using "-c" as the only argument).
    Hey, how about a truly silly command-line error -- a command line including both "-c" and "-u". What happens? It "consumes" the first of the two mutually exclusive switches, ignoring the second -- you get a compressed DNG file. Swap the order of the switches, and you get an uncompressed file. (I'd vote for a syntax-error message in that case, m'self.)
    Interestingly strange little program...If I run it from the command line, it drops back to the command line immediately after I press ENTER. That makes it appear to have failed. But it hasn't -- it's running in the background, and a few seconds later the DNG file is created. But, if I run it from within a batch file, it does NOT return control to me until it has completed writing the output file. Wonder what's up with that.
    Fun stuff. :)

  • Declaring UTIs for command line utilities?

    I'm working on some command line tools for manipulating Intel Hex files and I'd like to include a Quick Look generator. It appears there aren't any built-in UTIs for this file type, so I need to declare them, which apparently is handled by an application bundle. But command line utilities don't have an application bundle. So where do I put the plist to declare the new UTIs?

    The part of the plist for specifying the UTIs that the generator can handle doesn't seem to allow for defining a new UTI, so I'm assuming it has to be done someplace else.
    Here's the documentation I'm looking at: http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/Q uicklookProgramming_Guide/Introduction/Introduction.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP40005020-CH1-SW1
    From Listing 3-1
    <array>
    <string>SUPPORTEDUTITYPE</string> // change this!
    </array>
    it looks like the generator plist can only specify existing UTI strings. I don't see where to specify all the other bits, like file name extension. Am I missing something?

  • Java API Calls for command line operations

    I would like to use the command line operations programmatically from Java, or PL/SQL.
    I would like to parse a XML file. From DOS Command line I can issue a ifsput test.xml and I can have the file parsed and stored in the database.
    Can I do the same thing programmatically using java or plsql from database.
    Thanks
    Ramna

    The following code allows you to parse an XML file. In this case it parses a string containing a SimpleUserDefinition.
    package ifs.demo.common.users;
    import oracle.ifs.beans.*;
    import oracle.ifs.beans.parsers.Parser;
    import oracle.ifs.beans.parsers.SimpleXmlParser;
    import oracle.ifs.common.*;
    import java.io.File;
    import java.io.StringReader;
    import java.io.FileNotFoundException;
    import ifs.demo.vcard.type.Vcard;
    import ifs.demo.vcard.parser.VcardParser;
    import java.util.Locale;
    import java.util.Hashtable;
    public class UserCreator extends Object {
    private static LibrarySession getConnection(String user,String password,String serviceName, String schemaPassword)
    throws IfsException
    LibraryService service = new LibraryService();
    CleartextCredential me = new CleartextCredential(user,password);
    ConnectOptions connect = new ConnectOptions();
    connect.setLocale(Locale.getDefault());
    connect.setServiceName(serviceName);
    connect.setServicePassword(schemaPassword);
    return service.connect(me,connect);
    private static void createUser(LibrarySession ifs)
    throws IfsException
    String simpleUserString = "<?xml version = '1.0' standalone = 'yes'?>\n"
    + "<SimpleUser>\n"
    + " <UserName>TestUser2</UserName>\n"
    + " <Password>ifs</Password>\n"
    + " <HomeFolderRoot>/home</HomeFolderRoot>\n"
    + "</SimpleUser>\n";
    StringReader userDefinition = new StringReader(simpleUserString);
    SimpleXmlParser xmlParser = new SimpleXmlParser(ifs);
    xmlParser.parse(userDefinition,null,null);
    public static void main(String[] args)
    try {
    LibrarySession ifs = getConnection("system","manager","IfsDefault","manager");
    ifs.setAdministrationMode(true);
    createUser(ifs);
    } catch (IfsException e) {
    IfsException.setVerboseMessage(true);
    e.printStackTrace();
    Note that you ask about doing this from the database. If you mean that you want to run this code from inside the database the answer is not supported in 1.1. What you would need to do is use Oracle Advanced QUeuing to send a message, containing the XML to a process running outside the database and have that process connect to iFS and perform the parsing.

  • Code for command line

    Hello everyone,
    I have a SQL SSIS package that I would like to trigger
    through Cold fusion. I looked into SQL help, it said that using
    "dtexec" at command line will work. My question is: how do I get
    Cold Fusion do a command line job? What is the sytext/code for
    that?
    Thanks in advance.

    The <cfexecute...> tag allows ColdFusion to run command
    line code. It
    can take a lot of trial and error to get that to work
    properly. User
    permissions of the ColdFusion server standard output versus
    standard
    error, version of ColdFusion are all potential hickups with
    this type of
    code.
    Take it slow, one step at the time is the best advice I can
    give you for
    using <cfexecute...>.

  • DP Execution-Execute a DP without supplying value for command line argument

    DP Execution - How to execute a DP without supplying value for a command line argument?
    My requirement is like Directive should have an optional command line argument.
    i.e., even if the value is not supplied for the command line arg, my DP should run.
    Your help is appreciable.

    What is DP?
    What is Directive?

  • GPU acceleration for command line renderer?

    Hello,
    is it possible to use CUDA for batch rendering with many projects over the command line tool aerender ?
    Would a nVidia TESLA GPU significantly increase the performance? Or are only the 570/580 and Quadro GPUs supported?
    kind regards
    Poison Nuke
    www.poisonnuke.de

    No.
    The GPU matters hardly at all for After Effects. After Effects doesn't use CUDA at all, and primarily uses OpenGL for a low-fidelity preview renderer. Don't waste your time thinking about the GPU for After Effects.
