Converting to SSD Drive for Boot Drive on m7 with Win8

I just bought a new m7-j020dx (product code E4S19UA#ABA) with Windows 8 from Best Buy.  Unfortunately, it came with a standard hard disk drive (HDD) and I would like to install a Solid State Drive (SSD).  I have an Intel 320 and 530 series drive.  But I have not been able to get a bootable drive from this.
The first thing I tried was cloning the factory drive to a new 530 series drive using AOMEI Backupper.  I got a write error on the third partition.  I thought perhaps the drive was bad so I tried it again with an Intel 320 series SSD drive.  Same error.
The next attempt was to clone the drive to another 1 TB drive (connected via USB), shrink the main partition with MiniTool and clone to the 320 series SSD.  The cloning went fine.  However, with the new SSD installed, the computer will not boot and I get "Error0x0000225", something about a file not found.  Turning off "secure boot" in the BIOS setup did not help (I did this after the clone).
So I thought I would make a clean install of Win 8.  I generated a recovery disk on a 32GB SanDisk USB drive using Win8's recovery disk generator (as instructed on the HP site).  I then ran the recovery program off the USB drive and after a couple of hours of installing driver software and several reboots, I get an HP message stating the installation was not complete.  Repeating the install did not help.
I am not sure what the problem is. 
Is the USB recovery disk a made from the original HDD bad (one only gets one shot at it)?  Do I need to order media from HP on disks?  Are there issues with using SSD drives on these computers?  Do I not have a BIOS settig correctly (UEFI)?  Is there some Intel storage drivers getting in the way?
I think my next step will be to create a disk Image and then put it back to the SSD drive.  But I doubt this fixes the issue with booting to it.
Another option might be to do a fresh build using Win8 media and then download and install each driver from the HP website.
Any ideas out there in the land of experts?

    I've finally ordered a six cores Mac Pro and I'm waiting for a SSD from OWC.
    I intend to use the SSD as a boot drive so I plan to copy the content of the Mac Pro boot drive with SuperDuper when I'll receive it and restore it to the SSD.
    I've read few comments here from users who says that could be a risky operation doing so due to the fact that a SSD doesn't behave as a regular hard disk. I'm a bit skeptical because it is a very common operation to backup and restore a boot drive.
    Anyone has used SuperDuper with an SSD ?

    I'm not familiar with the Mac Pro and the supplied DVD. There is no special driver or configuration specific to the Mac Pro already installed on the HD ? The regular install DVD would do the job ? If so, you're right. It is a lot easier just to reinstall from the DVD.

    I have been able to get jumpstart to work with 3com 3c509 booting from PCI card, but I am unable to find a (realmode driver ) bef file for rt8139 realmode driver for boot DCA? and the /boot/solaris/devicedb/master does not contain a list for one but he rt8139 Realtek rtls0 (RealTek 8139 driver v2.1.1) under soalris 9 and the native one Solaris 10 does not have one ether.

    exist, AFAIK.
    Is that Realtek NIC integrated on the mainboard? Does the
    system bios offer PXE network booting using the Realtek NIC?
    If you do have PXE BIOS network boot support, then it should be
    possible to boot Solaris from the network without a realmode
    NIC driver. Solaris 10 b72 already contains the necessary entry
    for PXE booting using a Realtek NIC:

    A Time Machine backup drive should be substantially larger than the system drive.  If you have a 128 or 256 GB SSD then a 1 TB drive will suffice.  If you have a 512 GB SSD then a 2 TB drive will suffice.  As leroydouglas indicated any brand other than WD will do.

  • How to install SSD as a boot drive for Snow leopard? I am confused...

    Hello; This is first time I will use SSD on my macpro. I ordered the SSD from amazon and it will come next week I hope. I need some help and advice. My boot drive is HDD (Macintosh HD) now. So, I Want to move from the HDD to SSD. What's the easiest and guarentee way to do it? I am not a good technician. I've read about carbon copy cleaner or disk utility to back-up everything to another drive, boot from there then select the SSD. Is this needed? Cant I just directly copy my application and operation System to SSD? How about using the installation disc and directly install to the SSD? I am confused. What do you suggest? Please help

    Hi, There are any number of different ways to move the data from one drive to another. My preference (the last one) would be to do a clean fresh install using system disks because of the way SSD drive's lay down data.
    I'm not going to go into detail laying out HOW you do this. I assume you can do a Google (or other) engine search for details.
    1) SystemMigration - this is a built in MAC OS X utility that allows you to move system + data from one drive to another
    2)  Do a Time Machine backup of everything and then use TM to restore everything the way it is or REINSTALL a clean install of the data+new system on the replacement drive.
    3) Carbon copy Cloner is a great cloning application and can "block clone" from a smaller drive to a replacement drive of the same or larger size
    The above 3 methods assume you will transfer ALL the date, good bad & ugly, from the magnetic media to the SSD. This is the most efficient method,  but from personal experience you may end up not getting
    the faster boot up time and disk responsiveness you would expect from an SSD. I can't say why; it may have to do with the way data is initially "laid down" on the SSD OR all the extra "jetsam and flotsam" that accompanies a used system drive - "(how's THAT for non techno-geek detail).
    I have noticed that Drive clones are only as good as the source from which they are taken and that when I cloned a magnetic Lion 10.6 Drive to an SSD, there was no significant advantage in boot times with a 10.6 Lion boot taking anywhere from 45 to 60 to 75 seconds (pretty much he same for magnetic drives).
    I then did an original clean system install on the SSD as if I were doing it for the first time....updated it completely and THEN and only then did I reinstall all the apps individually followed by cloining the data files.
    By doing this, I was able to cut the boot time on that SSD (and all subsequent ssd clones of the original SDD) to 25 to 30 seconds.
    NOT BAD. Just simply cloning what you already have is a simple option, but if you're looking for optimal SSD performance, I'd opt for a fresh clean instll of everything.

    I've installed a Seagate SSHD hybrid SSD / HD unit and installed Mavericks on it.  Things do run fast.  However,
    something worries me a bit.  Since a block of SSD can be written only so many time before it reaches the end of its
    life, will the system drive have problems with this.  Unix uses some sort of swap disk to allow more to run than there is sufficient
    memory for.  This means sections of memory which are dirty (changed from when the program started) get written out to a
    swap file so the memory can be used by other programs.  Windows XP did this as well.  I imagine other modern systems do thet
    same.
    Will this cause the boot drive to get more writes than it might otherwise have?
    Against this, I observe that the Macbook Air uses SSD for its only built-in drive and that the new MacPro uses SSD for its boot drive.
    This leads me to think, that OS X does not do enough writing to the boot drive other than user data files to have a significant effect.
    Does anyone know more about this?

    All recent SSDs already incorporate wear leveling in their firmware to extend their longevity as much as possible.
    SSDs all have a finite write / erase cycle limit and will eventually fail, but it is reasonable to expect their lifespan should equal or exceed that of conventional hard disks. High capacity consumer grade hard disks should be considered wear items that will require eventual replacement. SSDs are no different, the only question being how much longer they will last in typical, average consumer applications. There is no doubt they are more abuse-proof than HDs and are preferable overall despite having a finite lifespan.
    For all practical purposes a HD's capacity eventually becomes too limiting for most users, and require replacement for that reason whether or not they fail. SSDs are no different in that regard.

    Macs have been doing that for ages, well before OS X was as much as a sketch on a cocktail napkin. Mavericks uses a new "memory compression" algorithm to minimize use of mass storage swapfiles entirely. It's light years ahead of XP or anything else.
    Apple's Fusion Drive intelligently migrates frequently used data to the SSD. Whether Seagate's hybrid drive it is capable of that is unknown.

    SSDs do better if they aren't so small that the lack of TRIM (made up for by background garbage collection) and over-provisioning, as well as handling write amplification.

    Sometimes the boot drive is going to be used, and needs that 20GB of free space. Some try to limit writing to SSD.
    Smaller units don't always have the same specs, and some can be darn-right slow when it comes to writes. And especially true of some of the newest generation SSDs that are barely shipping now.
    Pull your old drive and keep it off line as backup.
    Copy your media and data folders and libraries.
    Some leave their home folder with just home library ~/Library
    Which is where your prefs, email, etc are kept and gets a lot of high I/O, but also where web browser abuse disk drives, generally doesn't get much beyond 1GB storage.
    Boot time is over rated sign of performance. And for some reason can be slower. Not everyone is happy with apps launching, others find it makes a huge difference. Some SSDs I read where OS X wouldn't install so they had to clone their system using CCC or SuperDuper. CCC lets you copy just what you need.

    Writing zeroes is not a good idea as it is still just 'writing'.
    Any Sand Force (such as OWC that now switched to using SF controller) have BGC. The newer units have even more aggressive garbage collection.

    I recently installed an SSD into my Alienware 17 R2 (2015), and I've been trying to convert it into a boot drive. Every suggestion I've seen so far to do that includes installing Windows 8.1 onto the SSD, but my computer came with the OS on there already. How do I install Windows onto the SSD without a disc?

  • Buying a new iMac - can you use an external SSD drive as boot drive?

    Here is the question: Can you attach an external SSD and use that as your boot drive accompanying an iMac? This way all the Apple warranties stay valid but I am not saddled with the expense of the Apple installed SSD price?
    Now for some background ...
    I am looking to buy a new iMac replacing my loved but woefully underpowered Mac Mini. In a perfect world I would like the following set-up based on how today's iMacs can be configured:
    Processor: 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    Memory: 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB
    Hard Drive: 1TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive
    Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5
    Optical Drive: 8x double-layer SuperDrive
    The problem is I'd rather not spend $3200+. I would imagine most people plug something similar in and then begin to ID must vs. nice to haves. So, here are my must haves:
    Memory: Minimum 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB (I was thinking of starting with minimum and then purchase the right RAM and installing myself)
    Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 1GB
    Hard Drive: 256GB Solid State Drive
    I like to work the graphics side and have a media library of almost 1TB (uploading, downloading, converting, editing, etc.). With my existing setup I have 3+TB of external storage but again, am suffering massively in the horsepower department as it takes hours for me to do what I believe a new iMac can help me accomplish in a fraction of that time. This is not my profession so while I looked at the towers I still need this computer to serve as a family computer as well. Appreciate your thoughts and feedback.

    Ok this is great as we are progressing through. 
    So yes it can be done but there's the caveat of the "pipes" once you go external.  The only option for an external SSD Drive with thunderbolt that I know of is LaCie's 240 GB version ... Priced at $800.
    I think what I will need to do is suck it up.  The new MacBooks have the core technology I'd like but we really want the larger screen.
    Last question - should I wait/when might we expect an updated line of iMacs? In a few months or not for a while? That answer may provide some direction if it is anticipated to be sooner vs later.

  • Xpower Sata III Setup for Boot drive

    Hi again, I need help setting up my sata drive now...So far I have set sata 6gbs controller mode to AHCI.
    Verfied the Marvell bios recognized my drive correctly and installed windows. Was I supposed to change anything
    in the marvell bios(Virtual Disk? Assuming that is for 2 drives for raid)? Now I need to install the drivers for them. Should I install any other drivers first (Chipset, Lan, etc)? Also should I download them from msi or marvell? One thing in the manaual threw me off "Important: Only when you set the "AHCI" mode in the integrated Perpheral menu of mainboard bios setup, you have to install the raid drivers for the sata devices"? What exactly do they mean? Then it goes on to show how to install the drivers for bootable raid array. I kinda get the impression I was supposed to install the drivers via a disk as I was installing windows? Do I need to start over?

    well my Marvell controller recognizes my drives, it will let me install windows on them.  but i have no option at in the msi bios that would allow me to select on of these disks for a boot drive.  my only bootable options are on the sata ii ports.  i have tried my ocz sold 3 ssd, my 10k velociraptor, and a 2tb seagte data drive.  no option to boot from them.  and when i boot from my dvd drive to install windows, when i come to the prompt to customize my install, windows tells me that i can not install windows on this drive because the controller is disabled please go into your bios to enable the controller to properly boot and install windows.
    this is obviously and issue with the motherboard itself.  at no point and time have i ever had the option to boot from the sata iii controller.  ive owned this mobo for just under a year.

    I have a Pavillion p7 - 1240 desktop. I installed 120gb SSD drive. Window 7 recogizes SSD drive as regular active drive, but not as a boot drive. I want to configure 120 GB SSD as boot drive and 1.0 terabyte HDD as storage. How do I go configure Window 7.0 Home Edition  to boot from SSD ?

    Hello  Lasvegaswireman and thank you for responding and helping with installation of 120 Gb bytes SSd.
    I did a clean installation of bare bone Window 7 Home edition - on SSD drive. window was able to boot up successfully without any error messages.
    However, window 7 does not recongnize or detect  external  1 terabyte backup usb drive when I plugged it to USB port ; backup drive has power as indicated by LED on.  I were unable to restore backup file from external USB drive because - USB controllers, network adapter and all  crtical configurations of the orginal HP factory settings were not loaded; as the result, I were not able to use usb port restore computer setting from backup. it's a bare bone Window 7.0 Home edition 64 bit.  No internet connection detected.
    I pondered the mirror image backup of my internal hard drive, but the size of mirror image is 190 gigabyte, which is  larger the capacity of the 120 gbyte SSD.
    how do I work around or resolve this problem? I had not format the orginal  internal 1 terabyte hard drive yet for fear I might loose settings should I fail to restore files and data from external usb hard drive.
    I used Microsoft provided backup that comes with Window 7.  How do I load and restore all drivers and settings from USB drive onto SSD  drive , and use 1 terabyte HDD as data storage.
    I have not formated  internal 1terabyte hdd yet for fear of loosing all settings and configurations should I fail to restore data from external backup.
    Would you show me how to resolve or work around these issue?  I want to get larger capacity SSD to accomodate  mirror image but it is costly for budget.

  • M.2 Samsung Drive For Boot?

    Has it been determined what is the best use of this drive on an X99 2011 v3 system? I currently have only cache and previews, and testing it as a source drive for some ingested footage but I notice some are using it as a boot system drive. If a boot drive, should I have page file and previews on it as well? I have other SSDs installed as well as an Areca 1883x Raid controller with 5 Hdds attached for my main storage.

    I have read that the M.2 drive has a read/write speed of over 1 GB per second, ( which is TWICE the SATA III SSD speed), AND, because it is a direct connection to the high speed PCI Gen. 3 lanes, it eliminates the "half-duplex" nature of the SATA III interface, which does not allow reading while writing and vice versa. All this means even lower latency using that drive. If the M.2 drive is used for the OS, programs and Windows page file only, the system may run even "snappier" PLUS the many constant small "read and writes" to the Windows page file will be handled even faster. That drive is so fast that you could also have all previews and cache files assigned there as well...provided its capacity is large enough...with no loss in performance...maybe even a gain.  All else can now be placed on the SSD RAID array. You could experiment assigning the previews and all caches files to that SSD RAID array, along with all your media and project files, to see if there is any performance difference. As each separate volume, ( the M.2 and the RAID) array would now be over 1GB/ sec. EACH in transfer speed....there may be no noticeable difference in performance, as everything is ALREADY running at a high speed and balanced.  With the Areca's ability to provide even FASTER speeds by adding more SSDs, it would seem to make sense to just put EVERYTHING on the RAID array, except the OS,programs, and page file, which would go on the M.2......especially if you were to heavily tax your machine.
        I am sure that running the PPBM7 benchmark test would show any performance difference....you can compare your machine's results there with others to get an idea of how it is performing with PPro.
