Copies of Datafile Backups
Hello.
I have a question about setting database backup through Enterprise manager 11g (database 11).
In "Availability/Backup Settings/Device/Backup Set" there is "Copies of Datafile Backups" set to 1.
This is the number of backup copies.
How do i change the destination of "Copies of Datafile Backups"?
Backup is created to specified map/disk. But i can not find where to put new destination for copies of backup.
Any idea?
Thanks.
Regards,
Dejan

Regards,
DejanWhy would you want a new destination? Methinks you are seeking the wrong solution for your un-stated problem.
BTW, I specifically do NOT put my backups under the control of EM. Even with 11g, look at how many times the solution to a/any EM related problem is to drop and recreate the repository. I don't want to depend on the repository for anything critical.
Edited by: EdStevens on Apr 2, 2013 7:47 AMEd, I think he's asking about duplexing his backups.
could be. Even after re-reading the OP several times, it still doesn't seem clear what his real problem is. It seemed to me somehow that he was concerned about not being able to have more than one generation of a backup. I guess I read his statement about 'copies = 1' and thought "redundancy 1" and thought he was looking for some mis-guided way around it.
To the OP, I'm working under the assumption that you're responsible for a production database. You might not be, but just in case you are:
I would suggest you read the backup and recovery user's guide, and learn how to use RMAN. You can configure duplexing, and a great many other options with it.
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/backup.112/e10642/toc.htm
If you use EM to schedule backups, and you have no real idea of what is happening in the background, you're just asking for trouble. What are you going to do when you need to actually restore/recover the database? Depend on EM? I've played around with using EM for recovery, just out of curiosity. It did end up working, but it was not simple. Using RMAN on its own is much simpler and more effective. I had to do work outside of EM to get the database back up again anyway.
Learn how to perform backup and recovery the proper way. One day you'll have to restore/recover the DB, and you'll thank yourself when you used RMAN and still have your job at the end of the day.

- No four digit database version
- No platform
- No proof of any form which confirms there is only 1 copy.

You would need to post recent proof, preferably by a transcript of an 'incorrect' RMAN session, to get any advice.

Are Virtual Copies saved in Backups? How do I insert a backup into an existing catalog?
Are Virtual Copies saved in Backups? How do I insert a backup into an existing catalog
I deleted a tif image file that I didn't intend to, which had several LR virtual copies created from it. The virtual copies had a lot of important history that document my print preparation edits. Are these virtual copies saved in the LR backups?
If so, how can I insert them into the catalog I am using? I have made a lot of edits in the two days since my last backup and don't want to lose that history either. Do you suggest I make a current backup before retrieving files from my last backup? I know I'm supposed to go to the backup location and open the last backup, but how do I blend that with the current work from the last 2 days?
Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks, TomRob,
That was exactly what I was after. However, I'm still having trouble getting the virtual copies imported. The master file was in my trash, I restored it to the original hard drive folder. Before I got your message I re- imported it to LR but of course LR came up with a new name since I was importing from and saving it to the same folder in LR. And of course no copies. This may have been a mistake, but before starting the procedure you described, I re-named the master file (it seemed that the import from backup would re-create it so I didn't want a conflict).
Then I did what you said and used the 'Import From Another Catalog' feature. I found the virtual copies in the backup and checked them. But when the import completed, the it gave me file names xxx/Copy1, xxx/Copy2 but there was no image or history or metadata. When I tried to find the folder containing the files, it said it couldn't be found. So I missed something in the settings. When I tried again, there was a warning saying the file(s) exists in the catalog and its settings differ. I went ahead anyway and the message I got was "No Photos in previous import"
Here's what the import from backup shows:
A box with catalog contents and all the folders and files within them, that you can check.
A New Photos section, which gives 2 file handling choices: a)add new photos to the catalog without moving them or b) don't import new photos
A Changed existing photos section with 2 replace options: a) nothing or b) Metadata and develop setting only. If you choose this you can check a box to preserve old settings as a virtual copy.
Not sure what to do. I changed the master file back to its original name, but that didn't make a difference. Suggestions? Thanks, Tom -
Rman, no datafile backup.
Dear...
I have one scenario.
RMAN Backup - Yesterday.
Datafile added today, and it lost in evening. How can one restore/recover datafile using RMAN, as datafile was not backed up in last RMAN backup.

Using tar with zip for Datafiles backup on windows machine
Dear all,
We have R12 e business suite instance on windows.
I was implementing cold backup for this. Unfortunately i am not a windows guy.
I do have MKS tools installed on my windows machine, which contains the tar command.
Can i use tar -cvzf <bkp>.tgz <location of datafiles> for this?, My main concern is, is it going to harm the source like corruption etc..
ThanksIf MKS tools are supported under Windows it should not corrupt input files whether input files are Oracle database files or any other Windows files.
You could try instead to use RMAN for cold backup if you have already RMAN experience:
- RMAN does not backup empty blocks
- RMAN can also compress backups
- RMAN is fully supported on Windows if corresponding Oracle version is certified on your Windows server.
See an example of cold backup for database running in NOARCHIVELOG mode in http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/backup.112/e10642/rcmquick.htm#BRADV90059.
If your database runs in ARCHIVELOG mode just backup your database online: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/backup.112/e10642/rcmquick.htm#i766544. -
Only a cold datafile backup. No control files, redo files, archived redo
Hi everyone,
I made a stupid mistake and am in a bad condition with only a cold database backup without control files, redo files and archived redo files. My oracle database is oracle 9i. Is there any way to get my data back?
Thanks,
YanpingHi,
Have you a backup trace of a Control File ??
You can try perform this:
eg:
oracle@linux:/u01> cp -a /backup/*.dbf /u01/oradata/DB01
oracle@linux:~> sqlplus

Restore db directly from datafile backup...
Hi guys,
if i backup the db using
run {
ALLOCATE CHANNEL RMAN_BACK_CH01 TYPE DISK;
CROSSCHECK BACKUP;
BACKUP AS COMPRESSED BACKUPSET incremental level 0 DATABASE FORMAT '/oracle/bkup/databasefiles_0_%d_%u_%s_%T';
sql 'ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT';
BACKUP AS COMPRESSED BACKUPSET CURRENT CONTROLFILE FORMAT '/oracle/bkup/controlfile_%d_%u_%s_%T';
CROSSCHECK BACKUP;
DELETE NOPROMPT OBSOLETE;
DELETE NOPROMPT EXPIRED BACKUP;
RELEASE CHANNEL RMAN_BACK_CH01;
say, I dont backup archivelogs at all.
Then, I try to restore db based on the above backup:
RUN
set until time "to_date('20121119 15:30:00', 'yyyymmdd hh24:mi:ss')";
RESTORE DATABASE;
SWITCH DATAFILE ALL;
RECOVER DATABASE;
So, yeah, it failed like "RMAN-06023: no backup or copy of datafile 1 found to restore". My question is can I do it that way (not backup archivelogs in first step)? If so, how can I restore db later?
Thanks a lot.

- BillYou cannot recover to a point in time without the redo necessary to reach that point in time. YOu can do it without backing up the archivelogs, but that would mean you would have to maintain your archivelogs until such time as they were no longer needed.
Which begs the question ... why are you not backing up the archivelogs? -
hi i am having a datafile of 1GB size and i want to take hot backup. but i am having two mount points with 0.5 GB space in them. in this how can i proceed.
thanks in advancein this how can i proceed.One option is to pipe the backup to the "split" command, to switch to the new device:
nohup cat xaa xab xac xad > split_pipe &
nohup uncompress –c split_pipe > export_pipe & -
Create a new Database in an other server using a copie of RMAN backup
Hi all,
I want to create an other instance for our production database. We have disk and tape in rman backup. My question is can i create a new database using our disk backup in an other server?
If some procedure or steps is there, email it to my adresse [email protected]
Hamid.
ThanksBy means of the use of Recovery Manager it is possible to duplicate a database out from a previously taken rman backup. The method will be outlined in the next few lines.
Let's assume a source database named SRCDB and the target database, named GEMINI. A unix like environment is assumed, but it can be implemented on windows as well, just beware of the particular Oracle implementation on a windows platform (orapwd file name, service creation, path format)
1. Create a password file for the Cloned (GEMINI) instance:
orapwd file=/u01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0.1.0/dbs/orapwGEMINI password=password entries=10
2. Configure tnsnames.ora and listner.ora
Properly identify the database at the tnsnames.ora and have the instance manually registered against the listener.ora files, both files located at the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin directory.
2.a Manually register the database against the listener (listener.ora)
(SID_DESC =
(ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0.1.0)
(SID_NAME = GEMINI)
2.b Added the target GEMINI to the tnsnames.ora
GEMINI =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myhost.mydomain.com)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(ORACLE_SID = GEMINI)
2.c Reload the listener
lsnrctl reload
3. Create a new init.ora for the cloned database.
Next create an init.ora file for the cloned database. In case the same paths cannot be used on the target host, either because it is the same source host or because those paths are not reproducible on the target, then DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT may be required to be defined
DB_NAME=GEMINI
CONTROL_FILES=(/u02/oradata/GEMINI/control01.ctl,
/u02/oradata/GEMINI/control02.ctl,
/u02/oradata/GEMINI/control03.ctl)
# Convert file names to allow for different directory structure.
DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT=(/u02/oradata/SRCDB/,/u02/oradata/GEMINI/)
LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT=(/u01/oradata/SRCDB/,/u01/oradata/GEMINI/)
# block_size and compatible parameters must match those of the source database
DB_BLOCK_SIZE=8192
COMPATIBLE=9.2.0.0.0
4. Connect to the cloned instance
ORACLE_SID=GEMINI; export ORACLE_SID
sqlplus /nolog
conn / as sysdba
5. Create an SPFILE based on the init.ora
CREATE SPFILE FROM PFILE='/u01/app/oracle/admin/GEMINI/pfile/init.ora';
6. Start the database in NOMOUNT mode:
STARTUP FORCE NOMOUNT;
7. Connect to the TARGET, CATALOG and AUXILIARY databases.
By means of the rman three connections are open, one for the Source Database (SOURCEDB), another for the Catalog database (RCAT), and one more for the cloned database (GEMINI)
ORACLE_SID=GEMINI; export ORACLE_SID
rman TARGET sys/password@SRCDB CATALOG rman/rman@RCAT AUXILIARY /
8. Complete or Incomplete clone (recover)
From the rman the database using one of the following commands:
8.a Clone the database by means of a complete recover.
DUPLICATE TARGET DATABASE TO GEMINI;
8.b Clone the database up to a defined point in time in the past by means of an incomplete recover
DUPLICATE TARGET DATABASE TO GEMINI UNTIL TIME 'SYSDATE-2';
9. Process finished.
Once the process is finished, the newly created GEMINI database is ready to be used as an independent new cloned database.

RMAN-06023: no backup or copy of datafile 1 found to restoreSO MY QUESTION OR DOUBT IS WHY AT THE END IT FAILS THAT THERE IS NO BACKUP FOR DATAFILE 1,2,3,4 ??? AS WE CAN SEE ABOVE IT IS PRESENT IN MY BACKUPSET ??
ANY IDEA /HINTS/TIPS ?
I searched on google and somebody mentioned to a similar case that it could be a problem with 'CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP OFF' where as in my case i have set it to 'CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON'
Somehow looks like that the control file is not having latest backup info ... :-( I already took a fresh backup 2 times and landed up in same issue.. not sure where i am doing a mistake.

FRA´s datafile directory and tape backups
Hi again,
I have tried to find relevant information for my question, but instead of finding answers (again) which may or may not be helpful I hope someone can explain me.
We are running 10Gr2 databases with FRA´s enabled, currently backupping all using Oracle´s suggested backup to Disk devices.
Since we have copies of the datafiles in the FRA which takes up quite some (productional) storage space we are asked to stop the Disk backups, and backup things up to the tape device, which underwater is a TSM library.
How would this affect the occupance of the FRA? Will the datafile directory in the FRA be moved to the "tape" device if we implement (solely) tape backups; or is it only the backupsets and autobackups which would then be moved to tape?
I have tried several setups for which I wanted to set the datafile, backupset and autobackup directory out of the FRA, but I have not found a (working) way yet to set the datafile directory apart from it.
Advice or help are greatly appreciated.
RobinChanging the backup location from FRA to an external device will only effect backups (backupsets or image copies of datafiles,controlfiles,spfile,archivelogs). Possible (but not mandatory) components of FRA are archivelogs,backup pieces,controlfiles,online logs,image copies and flashback logs.
For performance reasons it's better to continue using the FRA as first backup device. Extend your backup strategy by backing the FRA itself to tape in regular intervals.
'BACKUP RECOVERY AREA' backs up recovery files created in the current and all previous flash recovery area destinations. Recovery files are full and incremental backup sets, control file autobackups, archived logs, and datafile copies. Flashback logs, the current control file, and online redo logs are not backed up.
The backup must go to a tape device, so RMAN issues an error if no sbt channels are allocated or configured.
Or use
'BACKUP RECOVERY FILES'. It backs up all recovery files on disk, whether they are stored in the flash recovery area or another locations on disk. Recovery files include full and incremental backup sets, control file autobackups, archived logs, and datafile copies.

RMAN -06100: no channel to restore a backup or copy of datafile 51
Oracle 10.2.0.4
I am attempting to duplicate a database from a full backup that was written to tape. I connect to a catalog, the target, and an auxilliary database. I allocate channels for disk and allocate auxiliary channels. For testing purposes I am trying to restore one data file from tape to disk but get RMAN-06100.

what do i need to do to correct this: backup of the indicated file exists on a device type that was not allocated for restore -
Rman backup command hangs for datafile ,works with archivelogs backup.
Issue is archivelogs backup is going fine ,But when we go for datafile backup its hanging there from oracle side as not able to give file handle.
RMAN session started with debug it gives only
