Copy files to Smart Folder

I have created a Smart Folder but cannot drag/drop files to that Smart Folder.
What am I doing wrong?

A Smart Folder is not a place, it's a list. It's the answer to question. For instance: What files were modified yesterday? Or what files have a 'work' comment in the Spotlight Comments? To get a file listed in a Smart Folder make sure it fits the answer to the question...

  • Windows 2008 : How to Restrict Users to Copy file from Shared Folder

    Hello All,
I need to Restrict Users to Copy file from Shared Folder. Please let me know is there any method to achieve this requirement.

If user have Read permission, they can copy it. So actually you cannot restrict user from copy your files if they could read/edit.
Some programs could help restrict users from edit/modify/copy the content of their files such as Office files, PDF files etc as Oscar said above.

  • Copying Results of Smart Folder Search to a Static Folder

    Hello all,
Over the years my image files have become duplicative and dispersed. I like the fact that I can create a smart folder that pulls all images into one location. However, before I start my cleanup. I'd like to transfer a copy of each found image to an external HD as a back up.  The folder contains about 150,000 files, so when I try try 'select all' and drag the contents to a mounted HD, I get the perpetual spinning beach ball and despite holding the mouse click until it disappears, I am not successful.
Anyone know of any way to collect the actual files and back them up to an external HD? Is there an app for that?
    Thanks in advance!

P.S. I understand that the contents of the folder are not the actual files, but I am hoping there is an app or some other way to mine out the actual files identified and copy the to the external HD for BU.
    Thanks.

  • ITunes copies files without the "copy files to Media folder" checked.

I've never been a fan of iTunes. My dislike of its impositive ways is directly proportional to its version (10.1.1(4) currently), so I never allow it to do anything automatically for me. I really like it that way.
In recent years, after a couple of experiences filled with much tribulation, I have never checked either "Keep iTunes folder media organised" nor "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library" under its Preferences, whenever I have been forced to use this accursed application.
But owning an iPod (a couple actually) makes it impossible to live a jovial iTunes-free lifestyle. So yes, I use it on occasion.
Those occasions almost exclusively mean copying music and audio books to and from it. No videos, no Pictures, no nothing else.
    I'm using a 4th Generation iPod Touch.
My iTunes library is not on my computer but on an external HD.
Anything I drag and drop to the library comes from folders in that external HD.
Now, the few audio books I own are not even inside my iTunes media folder. They are elsewhere in a folder of their own. But everything had worked O.K.ish so far.
Today, while re-tagging some audio books I asked iTunes to show the file in Finder. And it did. It was indeed inside that external HD... BUT... on the iTunes media folder, not on the folder where I keep those audio books originally.
I checked the iTunes "Preferences" to see if the Gremlins had changed anything. It was as it has always been (with all pertinent options unchecked).
I checked the original folder to see if they had been moved. Nope, they were still there too.
The versions are not the same, since all that re-tagging I'd been doing had of course affected the ones in the "wrong" folder (the one I did not assigned nor agreed to create).
The music is fine (some of which comes from a folder similarly outside the iTunes media folder, although most comes from within), it's just the audio books.
An event of note is that a few days ago, that external HD had a problem and the data had to be moved elsewhere, the HD re-formatted, and the info placed back into it once more. But the paths remain identical since the HD has the same name and the folders are where they once were. I've no idea if this has any effect on anything at all, but I thought to mention it.
So this mystery is such. Any takers?
The questions are: Why does this happen? How can I stop it from happening again (aside from not using iTunes :-D).
It is not that big a problem since I have very few audio books thus the duplicate is not too large, but I'd like to know how to avoid it, if possible.
Thanks in advance for any information on this.

iTunes prefs -> Advanced. Uncheck *Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library*.
Any reason you don't want them in the music folder? You could add them to iTunes and delete the from your documents folder.

  • Does itunes automatically copy files to its folder?

If I download music from a website to my desktop, and then doubleclick the icon on my desktop, it starts playing in itunes. But it also looks like it saves a copy of the file in the itunes music folder. Can i just safely delete the files off my desktop now (and still play the music in future) because they have been automically copied into the itunes folder?
Also, is there a way to turn this feature off, so that I can still play the music by clicking on the icons on the desktop, but itunes doesn't automatically copy the files into its folder?

    Hi Jeff,
iTunes does put a copy of the song in your Music Folder, and yes, you can delete the file off your Desktop as soon as it opens in iTunes, I'll take a minute now to see if you can turn off the automatic copying feature.
    Edit:
You can turn off the auto-copy setting by going to iTunes-Preferences-Advanced-uncheck the box next to "Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to library"

  • How do you get copied files into a folder of our choice?

OK so this may sound like a very basic question, but it has been driving me nuts ever since I bought an Apple Mac some 3 years ago and I find it hard to believe there isnt a solution.
Objective: to copy or import files into a folder previously created by me within Apples 'Pictures' folder. E.g. "Holiday 2012".
Problem: on every program I have used, inc iPhoto, iMovie, and just now, Preview, when I get ready to copy or import say my photo files from my iphone, or an SD card or a network drive, it never gives me the option to navigate to my folder! How mad is this?! Instead I get teh choice of just Apples plain old Documents or Pictures folders but NEVER get given any opportunity via the dialog box to navigate to my "Holiday 2012" folder. There just is not any obvious way to do it. So instead I get my hundreds of pictures listed directly under Pictures folder, to therefore added to all the other hundreds of pictures listed there. A terrible way to kep pictures.
What I need: someone to tell me how to do this or if its not possible then to tell me that. It is a basic operation that I have been able to do on Windows PC's since they were built. Wht not on Mac? Maybe the solution is right in front of me... if it is then its not intuitive, thats all I can say!
    Can you help please?

    Hi. Ok.
I have just tried the process again in Preview and in desperation this time clicked on 'Other' in the dialogue box when trying to Import. Low and behold I found the way to navigate to my own folders instead of being forced to use Apples standard Folders called Documents and Pictures.
    So problem solved.
Its daft that you cant click on the first folder names listed like you can in Windows so you can then reveal the  subfolders. I guess its just another Apple-ism. Too bad it took me three years to find it but then I suppose I gave up early.

  • Can't copy files to server folder

I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise and need to copy the contents of a CD to one of our W2003 servers.  I have a shared folder on the server so I start copying files from the CD, to this folder.  Part way through the copy it says "You need permission
    to perform this action".
???  I HAVE permission.  I'm in the middle of copying files to it.  I logged on to the server.  My username has full control permissions over the shared folder in question on the share and the file system.  I can create new
files in the share, create new folders and I've tried copying the disc to my desktop first and then to the share and I keep getting the same error.  I can copy any file off my desktop to this share except the files that came from the disc.  Why would
I get this error part way though the copy process?
    Thanks!
Edit: I managed to copy all files except "Autorun.inf".  Does Windows havd some restriction about copying this file?

    Hi,
    1.
Please test other CDs to see if the same issue occurs.
    2.
Manually insert the CD to Windows Server 2003 machine and copy to Windows Server 2003 to see if the issue occurs.
    Best Regards

  • Copy file ( .fmb ) from folder to folder

What is the command to use from Oracle Forms or from the database to copy a file from one folder to another?
An example for link will be greatly appreciated

    Hi,
Remember, the HOST call runs the OS command. So, you may need to use appropriate OS commands in the call. In windows, you may use "copy" but, if your App Server is of Unix flavor, you may want to use "cp".
Also, if you are planning to do it in the client machine, you need to fist identify the client OS and execute the appropriate command depending on it.

  • Newbie - Why is iPhoto copying files to Pictures folder when I said not to?

I'm a total newbie to iPhoto. I literally just installed it for the first time ever about an hour ago, but I am well-versed in the ways of iTunes for example and its preferences the way it works with MP3s on an external drive, and how you can set a folder on an external drive to be the default music location, etc.
I would have thought that iPhoto would have worked in a similar manner with photos.
Here's the scenario: I keep all my photos (literally 1000's of them, and quite hi-res.) on a massive external drive, as my main computer's hard drive is (a) quite small, and (b) quite full as it is with other stuff.
The problem I am having with iPhoto is that before I placed a single photo into its Library, I specifically set my Preferences, under the Advanced tab, to NOT copy files to iPhoto Library folder when adding to Library.
But then when I placed a whole load of photos from my external drive into iPhoto, I noticed my available free space on my main computer's hard drive had decreased somewhat. So I had a look in Users > Brett > Pictures > iPhoto Library, and sure enough, duplicates of all the pictures I added to iPhoto from my external drive had been copied there too! Why?!?!
And even more frustrating is that there appears to be TWO copies of each photo on my main hard drive: half in named sub-folders in a "Data" folder set to 360x270 (pretty massive if that's supposed to be a thumbnail!!) and then the other half, at FULL-resolution, in named sub-folders in a folder called "Modified" (not that I've modified any of them, but anyway).
And with another copy on my external drive, I now have THREE copies of each photo! That's just ludicrous!!!
I don't want iPhoto to keep "extra" copies of my photos. I just want ONE copy of each photo, and I want these photos to be stored on my external drive ONLY.
How do I set it up to do this? Or can I not do this? Have I got the wrong idea of what iPhoto can and can't do?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

    Brett:
If you look in the Originals folder and its subfolders you should see all alias files (very small in size) pointing to the source files on the external HD. In the Modified folder will be full sized files of any image file that was taken in the portrait orientation with a camera that has the auto-rotate capability. You can't get around it unless you rotate them before importing with a 3rd party application. Then in the Data folder are the thumbnail files. Those thumbnail files are for viewing up to a fairly good size before the original file kicks in when you use the slider bar in the thumbnail window. If you take your HD off line and then move that slider upward you can see how big you can get the thumbnail before it balks and gives you the "missing file" window of gray with a dotted rectangle.
Having the edited version lets you revert back to the original for other editing that might require a different crop (for printing a different sized photo for instance.) If you want just one copy of each photo you'll need to go to an application like iView MediaPro.
It may seem like a lot but when you think of what that library represents in full sized files on the external HD, you're really well off. My alias library of 27,000 files (29G in size) is only 1.6G on my boot drive. Even the professional applications like Aperture creates a second file when you edit and the thumbnail is either a separate file or embedded in the Aperature system for quick viewing without having to render the entire file.

  • Can't copy file from Shared Folder

    Hi,
Does anyone here knows how to copy file from shared music. I can view others shared music but can't do anything about it. When I tried to Right Click on music I want to copy. There are only 3 options (Get info, Unchecked Selection & Copy). I chose copy, but don't know what to do next. I wanted to place it in my Library but don't have an option to do it.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    guadz

I've never copied music, but have you tried just dragging the file to your library? Not 100% sure if it works, never tried it myself. Also, if you right click in your library, can you paste?

  • I want to create a "batch file" that will copy files from one folder into another, overwriting what is currently in there.

I've got a game that has a folder with Saved Games (Okay, it's Minecraft). I don't always have my external drives because I take my Mac Mini from my house to my friend's house and of course back after we finish playing.
There are times where I want a back up so that if something happens we can restore it as easily as possible.
What I've been doing is copying the particular saved game and pasting it to my desktop, replacing the new backup over the old backup. I'd like to be able to create a "batch file" so that I can just double-click on it and it will copy and paste overwriting the old version.
Since this is being automated I've been thinking. It would be nice to have 10 backups which I would like to have numbered from 1 to 10 (and not 0 to 9).
I'd like the batch file to delete backup 10 then rename backup 9 to 10 and 8 to 9 and so forth until backup 1 becomes backup 2 and then my live copy then gets copied to my desktop. I guess that one really doesn't need a number after it. It can have the exact same name.
Don't worry about automating the restore. I just want the backup part of it automated. I'm not a UNIX guy but I've tried to figure it out and it is just not working. So ... if someone out there can reply with a solution for me that would be great.
Extra credit for automatically compressing the backups with the built in compression utility so my backups use less space.
    Thanks in advance.

I have another psd (adjustment_layer.psd) file that only has one layer, and it is an adjustment layer. .
That is possible. An adjustment layer must be over a layer. The layer that it is over can have its visibility off but there needs to at least two layers in your (adjustment_layer.psd) file.  For you can not have and adjustment layer without a layer to adjust.
Are all your PSD file the same in size  x px by y px at z DPI?
It would be easy to create an action just to add the adjustment layer you want if your (adjustment_layer.psd) file adjustment layer, layer mask is a reveal all or hide all mask. You can Batch the action or use the Image processor script and have it include your action that add the adjustment layer  you do not need to write a script.
I would also record that action to add the adjustment layer clipped to the layer below. There is a bug in CS4 and CS5 Action Player. Actions that have recorded adding adjustment layers to be applied to all layers below may play incorrectly.  You will have to pay to get a fix  for this bug for Adobe is not going to apply a fix the the current releases of Photoshop. The bug is so far slated to be fixed in CS6 time will tell.

  • Can't move -only copy files to nested folder

I have new external hard drives (a trusted brand I have used for years -default formatted for Mac).
I drag-copied a folder of large image files from Drive A to Drive B. Then I dragged the folder on Drive B to another folder nested on Drive B. But I could not "move" the folder -the OS would only COPY the folder to the new destination. I have never seen this unless I held option key to duplicate.
I'm guessing there are some prefs settings or privileges options that I need to change.
The Drive is formatted as: Mac OS Extended (Journaled - Read&Write)
I did designate this drive for Time Machine Backup
    Thanks for any help
New Mac Pro (cylinder tower) 10.9.5

Thanks Eric. I don't see that option, but I did discover what the problem is:
    Sharing/Permissions were set to:
    System - read/write
    Wheel - read/write
    Everyone - read only
Above the options window text read: "You can only read"
After changing permissions to: "everyone - read/write"  all functions returned to "normal", so I guess the system was seeing "me" as a user, NOT the Admin. I am the sole user of this workstation. I appear to be logged in under my name, but maybe I am not considered the "admin"?
Any further user/admin clarification appreciated. (When computer wakes up, I log in under my name, not guest)

  • Not allowed to move (only copy) files within Shared Folder (yes, permissions are set to Read/Write)

I have moved my media (Music, Movies, Pictures) to the Users/Shared folder.  As I'm doing some cleanup in these folders, I am trying to move several folders/files at once, all within the same Shared folder.  I have confirmed that the permissions settings under "Get Info" are set to "Read/Write" and I have verified and repaired permissions with Disk Utility.  However, every move I try to do is a copy.  I have tried the Command-Drag method, but I'm still left with the green plus sign indicating a copy.
On smaller files/folders, this wouldn't matter so much as I would copy, then just delete the original.  But I'm dealing with many, many gigs of music and my HD doesn't have space for holding copies, even if the originals will be deleted.
Very frustrating to have to spend so much time to figure out what would seem to be a very basic file management feature.
I've searched and read and searched some more, but I'm stuck.  Thanks to any who can help.

Do have file sharing and remote login checked

  • Task scheduling and Status of copying files from one folder to other

In the attached VIs I am reading the content of a Folder from Harddisk and reading the contents of the FTP folder, then after comparing the contents or both folder I am copying the missing data to the HDD from FTP. I've two issues here,
    1) Can any body tell me how I can check while VI is running , that how much data is copied from FTP and how much is remaining.
    2) What if I want to do this task each day but at particular time lets say 1 p.m each day this task should be perform but the vi will be in run mode all the time.

    Hi Naqqash,
An idea for to set-up, you could insert a seperate case structure where the Case Selector is based on a comparison between the "Get Date/Time String" or a timestamp and 1pm, and when that's true, the case launches a sub VI that checks this process, displays the result, then closes when done. In that subVI, go to File>>VI Properties>>Window Appearance>>Custom>>Customize and then check the box 'Show front panel when called'.

Do you care about over-writing similar-named files on the target server? If not things get easier!
Is it ALL the contents of a sepecif directory or just some of them? Does it recurse down directory levels?
A very quick and dirty way is to make use of .rhosts - in the home directory of the users (should be the same uid) on each server put an hostname entry that the server can resolve to the other server. Make sure (token effort at security!) that the file has permissions of 400 (only read to owner). Test things by trying rlogin server2 from server1 (server1 being where the files exist and server2 being where you wnat to copy them). You should connect without being prompted for a password.
Next thing, change directory to where you files are and do a test copy - rcp filename server2:/target/directory
A man of rcp will aid you.
A better (more secure) way would be to invest a little time in setting up an ssh connection bewteen the two servers, it's not that difficult and would pay dividends.
