    many thanks
    Darren

I started having the same problem yesterday and today I talked to support on the phone about it. I was told to change the drive letter for my iPod in the Control Panel. If that did not work , I was out of luck and needed to purchase a new iPod (mine is 144 days out of warranty). Well, it did not work for me! ****, ****, ****!!!!!!!!! Anyway, try changing your drive letter in the control panel. Try this link for info on that:

Hope it helps. If not, you should certainly be covered under warranty if you just bought it.

  • 1418 Corrupt iPod 30 GB Video 5th Gen

For the past few months my 2nd ipod has been acting very strange. I will be listening to a song, audio book or podcast and it will freeze up then decide to work again or I will have to restart it. Also I have not had a connection to itunes….EVER….that has been without an error message of some sort (corrupt, need to restore, reformat…)
Now just two days ago I plugged in my ipod and like so many times before it was corrupted and wanted me to restore. So I went along with this and next thing I knew....ERROR 1418!!! Now I cannot restore my ipod and better yet it erased all of my songs, audiobooks, podcasts, so I have a blank ipod.
Not only did I get this error, but now my ipod will freeze up when plugged into windows. When I plug in my ipod windows the "do not disconnect" screen appears and the red circle flashes for a while, then the ipod will freeze up or itunes will start and tell me that my ipod is corrupted and then my ipod will freeze up. My situation is so bad now that I cannot get the error 1418 anymore. I just have an ipod that will not connect to my computer or any other computer, has no media, and freezes up almost on command.
SWEET PRODUCT APPLE!!!!! That is sarcasm. Man, I am fed up with this stuff!!!
I have been trying to fix this for 2 nights now, reading forums, discussions, complaints and threats to sue apple for the problem. I feel lucky my ipod worked as long as it did as I discovered this problem may have been linked back to the release of iTunes 7 back in September (or fall of 06).
I would like to know if anyone has found a solution other than unplugging/plugging in while during restore, reformatting through windows, reformatting through a HP flash utility, the 5 Rs' or solutions to the 1418 problem on apples web site. NONE of these have worked for my ipod. Someone please help me…I am getting desperate. If you also have this same problem please tell Apple.
    Thanks,
    BP

    Hi jmgmacgirl,
IMHO, the best option is the clear plastic cases. They do not take any of the ipod's beauty away and allow the same functionality as without the case. My personal favorite (And only recently released) is one from ContourCase. However, there are others that are similar.
    Enjoy your iPod

  • IPod Video 30GB Corrupted

    Aloha all,
I'm having some issues with this 30GB iPod Video. I have no details as of how old it is but the only thing i know is the owner of the ipod was transferring a song and accidentally ejected the ipod while transfering some songs without letting it finish. Since then, the iPod has been having a problem connecting to the computer (it takes forever to show up in itunes) and when it does show up in iTunes, an error message shows up saying "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod."
I've done solutions with this ipod such as the soft-reset and enabling disk-mode...I've also tried to use 3rd party software that transfers music from the ipod to computer so I can backup the music before doing a restore BUT the device isn't showing up.
    So quick run down...
    - i plug in the ipod and screen flashes "do not disconnect"
    - with itunes open, error message shows up
    - when i eject ipod from itunes, screen still flashes "do not disconnect" so i do a soft-reset
    - ipod still works (still plays music, haven't tried videos, but the menu's are fully functional and i'm able to listen to music)
    - trying to backup ipod but it's not discoverable
The computers that i'm doing all of this on are Mac's. I've tried testing it on different computers and different USB ports...still nothing.
My question, Is there a way to fix this problem WITHOUT having to restore? and if i do need to restore, is there a way where I can retrieve the music before restoring the ipod to factory settings? There's about 4,000 songs on that ipod and some of them aren't on the computers we have now.
    Let me know...
    Mahalo (Thanks)

Does this iPod appear in the Finder when you have it connected?  If so, try doing a low level format on the iPod's HD (either as FAT32 or Mac OS X Extended Journaled).  See this article for more details.
    Reformat iPod
If the iPod is not appearing in the Finder either try manually placing the iPod into Disk Mode. Doing so may be able to at least help it mount as an external drive on your Mac.  From there, use the procedure outlined in the article above to reformat the iPod's HD again if it's still not appearing in iTunes.
Here are instructions for getting your iPod into Disk Mode.

after i install the new iTune

If you're still within the 1 year warranty then I recommend that you take it to your Apple store and get it replaced immediately.
What happens when you put it in disk mode? If you only see the 'ok to disconnect' then possibly your dock connector is fried or something.
This is exactly what happened to me but I didn't realize it until after the 1 year warranty expired. My ipod charges and plays the existing songs but I can no longer add anything to my ipod.

  • Many Problems With Ipod Video--Corrupt Hard Drive?

    Hello,
I got this iPod 30 GB the christmas of 2005. Ever since a few weeks ago, my iPod started giving me my corrupt messages, so then, I kept restoring and it was fine. This again happened to me recently and haven't resolved it yet. So here is my story:
    I did the 5R's = Nothing
I renamed it later in the alphabet = Nothing.
I also must add that I have plugged it in and when I go to 'my computer' to try and format like others said, it freezes; on the 'my computer' & 'iTunes'. I really hope you guys can help me.
I also noticed when I was looking at the about section on my iPod, it says my capacity is like 27.8 GB and available is 10.4 GB, so I don't know if that will help.
I really don't want to buy a new one and hopefully you guys can help me out. Thanks in advance.

No problem. Have you tried this iPod on another computer?
Also, while everything else is disconnected, connect your iPod and force it into disk mode. If your computer can see it, reformat your iPod (FAT32, not a quick format) and then give it a drive letter of M or P.
Disconnect the iPod and reload the USB Driver:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136
Pay attention to the last item in the article, and reload the USB driver even if no new ones are available for your computer.
Reconnect your iPod and see if you can Restore it.

When I first plug in my iPod video, iTunes launches fine, I see my device and all its contents fine, then receive a message "The iPod "JALF" cannot be updated. Hi EMPA,
    Have you tried these things?:
    - Restore the iPod. For instructions and info on how to restore an iPod, see this article:
    Restoring iPod to factory settings
If you are on a PC (running Windows XP), then continue with these things (only if the restoring didn't help with the issue, of course):
    - Run disk error checking. Try running "Chkdsk" on your iPod, and see if it fixes any errors on your iPod.
For info, see this MS document on that:
How to perform disk error checking in Windows CP
    - Reformat the iPod in Windows. Note that you should only do this if your iPod is being recognized in iTunes (in order to be able to restore it afterward).
    To reformat your iPod:
1 - Connect your iPod to your computer.
2 - When iTunes has finished syncing with your iPod, open "My Computer".
3 - Right-click on your iPod, and click on "Format". (If your iPod is not showing in My Computer, make sure that disk use isn’t enabled in iTunes).
4 - Here, verify that your formatting settings are "Default", with the format type set for FAT32. Also, make sure that "Quick Scan" is not selected.
5 - Then, click on "OK" to begin the formatting process.
6 - When this is complete (it might take a while), make sure to restore your iPod in iTunes again, so as to properly reload the firmware back onto it again.

I installed the iPod Updater 2006-06-28. I have the latest version of iTunes 6.0.5.20. The iPod appears in iTunes with the 3500+ other songs in my library. But the 18 songs I just downloaded WILL NOT UPDATE TO MY IPOD!!!

If you have made sure that both the iTunes and iPod software are current and have deauthorized and reauthorized your computer, try this test:
    1. Deauthorize the computer.
    2. Create a new user in the system.
    3. Download the free song of the week from the iTMS in the new user account.
    4. Play the song in that user account to authorize again.
    5. Restore the iPod (using the iPod updater) in the new user account.
    6. Sync just the free song of the week and see if it plays on the iPod.
If it does, you appear to have a corrupted iTunes library file, and you should recreate the iTunes library file in your normal user account, and then sync your music back to the iPod and all should be well.

  • How To Fix A Corrupt iPod

Okay, this is my first and possibly last post here, I just thought that I should write my solution to this problem as there are a lot of people suffering with a corrupt iPod. I will first recommend you read this topic also if you're still having problems
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3639883&#3639883
This will be a long post (sorry), so I'll break things up into an EXPLANTION of the problem and the SOLUTION as I think some people will be thankful for a bit of insight and some people just want a solution.
    read on...
    EXPLANATION:
My problem occured when receiving a second hand iPod, it had some bugs, stutters and general problems so I tried a restore, this is where my real problems started. After the restore music would not always copy correctly to the iPod, some times returning with a "Windows Delayed Write Failure", also some songs and videos would not play sometimes requiring a restart (reset), sometimes they would return me to the menu straight, and sometimes they would play fine. Also the hard disk would make a lot of fuss just to select certain songs or videos, I would even have trouble booting the iPod or detecting in iTunes.
These things led me to believe either: The hard disk was cactus; The hard disk had bad sectors; Or there was a file system error on the hard disk.
When the iPod got really bad it wouldn't properly detect in iTunes, iPod Access, Anapod or Windows, it wouldn't restore in iTunes, and I couldn't access it through windows explorer even in disk mode as it claimed the disk or the control folder had corrupted.
Using some diagnostic tools I discovered the problem was nothing more than a simple and easily fixed FAT32 filesystem error.
The problem is that the iPod uses a FAT32 filesystem which is a 'kind of unstable' but not yet redundant filesystem we used back in the Windows 98 days, I assume it uses this filesystem for compatability reasons as pretty much any pc with Windows 98 or above can access FAT32.
FAT32 stores files in chains, linking one file to another, and branching out like a tree, this system is very easily corruptable due to anything from bad shutdowns or yanking the dock cable of the iPod during copying.
    SOLUTION:
1:(optional) Check your iPod by reseting it and when the apple logo first appears hold the middle select button and the rewind button to enter a diagnostic mode. Then press the menu button to enter manual testing. Scroll down to IO and press select, then select the hard disk option, then select the hard disk specs option. Read the data to check your hard disk is detected as the correct size (30Gb in my case), if it isn't then reset the iPod and repeat this step until the hard disk detects as the correct size.
2:Reset your iPod, as the apple logo appears hold down the middle select button and the play button, it will then boot to a screen with a tick in the middle and it will say Disk Mode along the top of the screen.
3: Now load iTunes and then plug the iPod into your computer and let it detect. iTunes should detect your iPod though it may not properly detect it. If iTunes doesn't detect an iPod AT ALL then reset your iPod and repeat steps 2 & 3 until it does.
4: Now your iTunes should display your iPod or an iPod just call IPOD, click on your iPod and restore, you can use the same version software or update - it doesn't matter. Even if your iPod normally recieves an error when retoring it SHOULD restore as long as you're in disk mode. When it is done restoring DO NOT UNPLUG THE IPOD, just let iTunes redetect it.
5: Now go to My Computer and right click on your iPod (could be called Removable Disk and go to properties. Now click on the tools tab and run Scandisk (Check Disk). In the scandisk box that opens tick both check boxes (fix automatically and surface scan) and click run, this will take a while but when it's done go to iTunes and eject the iPod, unplug it from the computer, and reset it.
You have jsut fixed your iPod.
Please if you use this solution and it works for you, post your thanks or comments so I know my time wasn't wasted writing this.
    thankyou
    -odsmart

alright... this one's for raab in Montana
I'll break your question down into parts to make things easier.
1: The download error. I don't think your problem is actual iPod corruption per se, it sounds more like an Internet download problem. iTunes requests software (firmware) updates from the server for you and downloads it to your computer, Then updates your iPod. If the problem is that iTunes can't download the software then all the restoring/formatting and scandisking in the world won't help you. I really need a little more info but I think this may help: Are you on ADSL? Alot of Internet providers will not give you a static IP unless you ask and/or pay for one. Long story short, If you are behind a router, gateway or firewall your pc may be blocking the ports that iTunes requires for it's update service. One solution would be to boot your pc into safe mode, cancel the restore option and when your pc is finished booting just try to update your iPod through iTunes. Using safe mode means most antivirus/firewall services won't be running so you may be able to update that way. If not? Well post me some info on your internet connection, all I need to know is if you're on ADSL or not, and what make and model of router you use if you have one. In the mean time, try taking your iPod to a friends pc and installing iTunes and updating it there, if it works there then you'll know it's your pc/setup. Oh well, let me know.
2: The grinding noise? They do make a noise when scanning through looking for songs and the like, and sometimes they do it for a while but I'm not sure if I'd describe the sound as "grinding". Perhaps if my first answer didn't help then you have bigger problems (hardware problems) I'm not sure, if I could hear your iPod from Australia I'd be able to tell you if it's alright or not.
3: I mentioned above that my main posts are fixes not to be undertaken unless your iPod has similar symptoms to mine, I cannot stress enough that things like scandisk and format are NOT supposed to be run on an iPod, at least not on a regular basis, and definatly not one after the other. IF ANYBODY'S iPOD DOES NOT EXIHIBIT THE SYMPTOMS IN THE MAIN POST DO NOT USE THE FIX. In particular Raab, your problem seems to be elsewhere.
Let me know how you go...

  • IPhoto Slideshows on an iPod Video

I have a 60GB iPod Video and just bought an iMac (Intel). I've put together a slideshow both in iDVD and in iPhoto and put music to it that I legally purchased on iTunes. I can't get the slideshow from either application to work on the iPod. I tried to export it as a quicktime movie but it only came up as a black screen on the ipod. Any suggestions?

    rdelupi:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. To put comments/titles on an iDVD slideshow the slideshow must be created in iDVD from stills imported from iPhoto. Slideshows from iPhoto are QT movie files and they can't have comments added by iDVD.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Syncing Fails with iPod Video - Some of the items were not copied

When I try to sync my iPod Video, I get this message displayed in iTunes 7.5:
"Some of the items in the iTunes Library, including "NPR ...." were not copied because they could not be found".
Well I don't even see these two podcasts in question listed in my Itunes Podcasts List. To make matters worse, the two particular NPR podcasts are no longer being listed for download by iTunes.
    Is my ITunes Library corrupt?
Do I need to rebuild my iTunes Library (via the instructions at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451 )?

I rebuilt the Itunes Library using these instructions --
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
That fixed the problem. The only thing it does not tell you is that you must re-subscribe to all your podcasts.

  • Re: Corrupt iPod

My iPod will not display in iTunes or in third party software like iPodAgent or SharePod. I got an error in the ipodcontrol\music file or something like that. I may go to my local Apple Store tomorrow. I have not tried to format my ipod yet. I'm worried about losing 5200 songs and 17,000 pictures. Is there any backdoor method to copy the contents of my ipod to a folder on my desktop? Does the Apple Store have a transfer method if they replace my device?

I have a similar problem. I have the ipod video 5th gen, and it won't do anything- it says "connect to itunes to restore." When I connect to itunes, it says my ipod is corrupt and I need to restore it. When I try to restore it, an error message shows up and says "there was a problem downloading the software for the ipod. the requested resource was not found." I've tried everything. Is there anything else I can do?

  • Do IPod Video and Windows XP HP Labtop go together?

I wanted to know if my HP Labtop can handle itunes. Last time my computer got really slow (laggy) and i had to reformat it. Its back to normal but im not sure if i can put itunes back on my laptop if its going to cause the same problem.
P.S. I dont want to waste my ipod video of 60 GB and i havent had it for a year yet.

Just tossing in my experience quickly:
Ever since I "upgraded" to v7 of iTunes, my iPod (60G w/Video) hasn't been recognized, same as Rebecca. Also my TransFlash memory cards aren't recognized, either. I went through many steps listed in these forums, to no avail; I even did a repair install of Windows. I have noticed in my Device Manager the following: a yellow exclamation point beside "parport" and "serial". (Right-click "My Computer" > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > View > Show Hidden Devices) For both of these entries, under their properties, it says this: "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)" I haven't found much info surfing the net as of yet... I hope this info helps a bit. Don't mean to hijack, here, either. But in my opinion the new iTunes upgrade corrupts the windows registry somehow, as this story of mine seems to be quite prevalent...
