Corrupt (?) zipped files from "Create Archive"

I am repeatedly having trouble with files I zip using "create archive." Whether it's fonts or images, the recipients are not able to use the files I send (they seem to uncompress, but aren't readable). This is happening often enough that I wonder if there is a problem with the software. I didn't find this question asked when I did a search.
thanks!

Hi, casperr. Welcome to the Discussions.
1. Are the recipients using Windows? If so, you may want to purchase a copy of StuffIt Deluxe, which can create archives that are both Windows-friendly and self-extracting.
2. Have you tried opening the archives you have created with Create Archive to see if the contents of the archive you've created are AOK before sending them? That will help you determine if the problem is on your Mac, with the transmission, or a problem on the other user's computer.
3. You might want to enquire as to how the recipients are unzipping the archives you have sent that they are finding problematic.
Good luck!

  • Unzipping corrupted zip file

    I have a corrupted zip file whose contents I'm trying to salvage. I know that the problem is with one of the files in the sbutman/taxes/ directory, and I've resigned myself to losing it. I've written the following short program to try to extract as much data as I can from the archive:
    * Created on Sep 7, 2005
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.zip.*;
    * @author sbutman
    public class ZipExtractor {
        static final int BUFFER = 8192;
        public static void main( String argv[] ) {
            try {
                BufferedOutputStream dest = null;
                FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream( argv[0] );
                ZipInputStream zis = new ZipInputStream( new BufferedInputStream(
                        fis ) );
                ZipEntry entry;
                while( true ) {
                    try {
                        entry = zis.getNextEntry( );
                        if ( entry == null ) break;
                        if ( entry.getName( ).startsWith( "sbutman/taxes/" ) )
                                continue;
                        System.out.println( "Extracting: " + entry.getName( ) );
                        if ( entry.isDirectory( ) ) {
                            File directoryEntry = new File( entry.getName( ) );
                            directoryEntry.mkdir( );
                        else {
                            int count;
                            byte data[] = new byte[BUFFER];
                            // write the files to the disk
                            FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream( entry
                                    .getName( ) );
                            dest = new BufferedOutputStream( fos, BUFFER );
                            while( ( count = zis.read( data, 0, BUFFER ) ) != -1 ) {
                                dest.write( data, 0, count );
                            dest.flush( );
                            dest.close( );
                    catch( IOException ioe ) {
                        System.out.println( "An IO exception has occurred:" );
                        ioe.printStackTrace( );
                        continue;
                zis.close( );
            catch( Exception e ) {
                System.out.println( "A general exception occurred:" );
                e.printStackTrace( );
    }When I run the program, everything works fine until I get to the zip file entry causing the problem. The output looks like this:
    An IO exception has occurred:

    What's happening is that the inner catch block detects the zip entry error as expected. It continues on the next pass through the while loop and attempts to read the next entry, whereupon the second IOException is thrown over and over again. (Incidentally, I've also tried using java.util.zip.ZipFile, but it won't even open the file.)
    My questions are these:
    1. What exactly does "Push back buffer is full" mean? I've looked through the javadocs, but my understanding is still sketchy. Can I manipulate the buffer or otherwise code around the problem in order to prevent this error from being thrown?
    2. Is there any way I can see the source code for java.util.zip.ZipInputStream? It would be very helpful to see exactly where and why this error is being thrown.
    Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. By the way, if this question should be better posted in another forum, let me know and I'll re-post it there.

    No clue. Too few info.

  • "zip" Terminal command no help fixing corrupt zip file; any other workarounds?

    I downloaded a ".zip" file containing some files that I need to access.
    When I double-click on it, I get the "Unable to unarchive 'xyz.zip' into '[foldername].' ( Error 1 - Operation not permitted )" message, which many people report when they try to open a corrupt zip file.
    I also tried opening the file with "StuffIt Expander," "Archive Utility," and "The Unarchiver," as well as some specialty zip-compression programs, but none were successful.
    I then installed the very useful "Archive.qlgenerator" plugin (http://homepage.mac.com/xdd/software/archive/) which allowed me to at least see inside the zip file using OSX's "QuickLook" feature. Lo and behold, all the files that were supposed to be in the zip file are indeed in there, as they should be. The problem is not that the zip file is empty, the problem is that it has become corrupted somehow.
    So, what I need to do is either "fix" the corrupted zip file, or alternately find some way to extract the needed files using brute force.
    Following tips given on various forums, I tried using OSX's "zip" command in terminal (http://homepage.mac.com/kelleherk/iblog/C1901548470/E731143104/index.html and http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=132146). I was able to use it properly, but unfortunately neither the "-F" nor the "-FF" commands were of any helping in "fixing" the zip file. The "-F" command incorrectly said that the zip file was empty and that there was nothing to fix; the stronger "-FF" command came back with
    Could not find:
      xzy.z01
    Hit c      (change path to where this split file is)
        s      (skip this split)
        q      (abort archive - quit)
        e      (end this archive - no more splits)
        z      (look for .zip split - the last split)
    or ENTER  (try reading this split again):
    ...but none of the options produced any result. Pressing "z" gave me
    Could not find or open
      xyz.zip
    ...which means that even "-FF" could not get past whatever problem had corrupted the file.
    So: is there any built-in way for Mac OSX to fix or extract the contents of a zip file corrupted like this?
    Alternately, is there any third-party shareware or freeware that will do the trick?
    (I don't want to have to spend big $$$ on a commercial program since all I need to do is open a single zip file. And there is no way to contact the zip file's original creator, so I can't download an uncorrupted version.)
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Mark:
    When I try your first suggestion in Terminal ("unzip -t /path/to/file"), I get this message:
    Archive:  /xyz.zip
      End-of-central-directory signature not found.  Either this file is not
      a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive.  In the
      latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
      the last disk(s) of this archive.
    unzip:  cannot find zipfile directory in one of /xyz.zip or
            /xyz.zip.zip, and cannot find /xyz.zip.ZIP, period.
    When I try your second suggestion ("unzip -l /path/to/file"), I get the exact same error message. (And yes, I am fixing "/path/to/file" to be the correct path to the actual file).
    And no, it is not really part of a multi-part archive. (Or at least it wasn't supposed to be; only one zip file is available, and there was only supposed to one.) Perhaps the zip was mis-encoded in the first place, so that the person who created it accidentally did something wrong which the unzip applications are interpreting as this file being part of a multi-part archive; but even so, all I have is this one file, so I need to fix it as is, or extract its contents as is, since I have no way to contact the original creator to do it right this time.

  • Read a zip file from Application server.

    Hi,
    Is there a way to read a zip file from the applicatoin server to internal table in ABAP program?  The operation system is running MS windows server.  The zip file contains only 1 text file.  I tried to use open dataset 'uncompress', and use read dataset, but read dataset gave me sy-subrc = 4.  Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    hi,
    to convert xstring to text you can use this:
    DATA unzipped_data TYPE xstring.
    DATA text_data TYPE string.
    DATA conv_x2c TYPE REF TO cl_abap_conv_in_ce.
    conv_x2c = cl_abap_conv_in_ce=>create( ).
    conv_x2c->convert( EXPORTING input = unzipped_data IMPORTING data = text_data ).
    moreover, if you want to split your text at "end of line" (CR LF in microsoft windows) into lines:
    DATA text_lines TYPE TABLE OF string.
    SPLIT text_data AT cl_abap_char_utilities=>cr_lf INTO TABLE text_lines.

  • Batch file extracting all files from nested archives

    I have managed to leverage a powerful
    forfiles command line utility with the mighty
    7z compression program.
    Below is a simple batch file extracting all files from nested archives hidden at any depth inside other archives and/or folders. After the extraction each archive file turns into a folder having the archive file name. If, for example, there was an "outer.rar"
    archive file containing nothing but an "inner.zip" archive with only "afile.txt" inside, "outer.rar" becomes "...\outer.rar\inner.zip\afile.txt" file system path.
    @echo off
    rem extract_nested_archives.bat
    move %1 "%TMP%"\%2
    md %2
    7z x -o%1 -y %TMP%\%2
    del "%TMP%"\%2
    for %%a in (zip rar jar z bz2 gz gzip tgz tar lha iso wim cab rpm deb) do forfiles /P %1 /S /M *.%%a /C "cmd /c if @isdir==FALSE extract_nested_archives.bat @path @file"
    ARCHIVES ARE DELETED DURING THE EXTRACTION! Make a copy before running the script!
    "7z.exe" and "extract_nested_archives.bat" should be in folders available via the %PATH% environment variable.
    The first parameter of extract_nested_archives.bat is the full path name of the archive or folder that should be fully expanded; the second parameter is just the archive or folder name without the path. So you should run "c:\temp\extract_nested_archives.bat
    c:\temp\outer.rar outer.rar" from the command line to completely expand "outer.rar". "c:\temp" must be the current folder.
    Best regards, 0x000000AF

    Incredibly useful!  Thank you so much.  I did make a couple of small changes to make the script a little easier to use from the end-user perspective.
    First - I don't like making the user input the redundant second parameter, so I added this snippet which extracts it from the first parameter.  The first line of the snippet enables delayed expansion so that special characters in our file name don't
    break anything.  The second line pulls the parameter into a variable, and the 3rd line uses delayed expansion on that new variable.  Before implementing delayed expansion I had problems with file paths which included parentheses.
    SetLocal EnableDelayedExpansion
    Set SOURCE=%1
    For %%Z in (!source!) do (
    set FILENAME=%%~nxZ
    set FILENAME=%FILENAME:"=%
    Anyway once that was done, I just used %FILENAME% everywhere in the script instead of
    %2 (making sure to correct quotes as needed)
    This way, to run my script all you need to run is:
    C:\temp\extract_nested_archives.bat C:\temp\Archive.zip
    Second - I didn't want to modify the Windows environment variable.  So I replaced
    7z with "%PROGRAMFILES%\7-zip\7z.exe"
    I also replaced extract_nested_archives.bat with "%~f0" (which represents the full path+filename of the current script).
    Here is my full script now.  Tested on Windows 8 with the 64-bit version of 7-zip installed:
    @echo off
    Setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion
    Set source=%1
    For %%Z in (!source!) do (
    set FILENAME=%%~nxZ
    set FILENAME=%FILENAME:"=%
    move /Y %1 "%TMP%\%FILENAME%"
    md "%FILENAME%"
    "%PROGRAMFILES%\7-zip\7z.exe" x -o%1 -y "%TMP%\%FILENAME%"
    DEL "%TMP%\%FILENAME%"
    for %%a in (zip rar jar z bz2 gz gzip tgz tar lha iso wim cab rpm deb) do (
    forfiles /P %1 /S /M *.%%a /C "cmd /c if @isdir==FALSE "%~f0" @path @file"

  • Missing folder structure in zip file from Theme Editor

    Hi all gurus!
    I have an interesting problem with this background: I want to change the customer brand image in the portal header and do som other modifications. For this reason I have made a copy of one of the standard portal themes, as I'm supposed to do, and I have downloaded that zip file from the portal.
    When unzip this file i get the following files: its.zip, log.html, metadata.properties, portal.zip and upgrade.xml. As I have understood it that is the correct content. Now I'm supposed to unzip the file "portal.zip" and reach amongst other folders the one named "prtl". In this one there is a folder named "images" and under that one is "header" found and in THAT folder the change of picture is done.
    Now for the problem: when I unzip "portal.zip" I just get the content of some property file, NO folders what so ever! If I try to unzip "its.zip" I can see the folder structure under that folder!
    If I open the structure with Total Commander I can see the missing folders! But I can't do the copying of the image, the whole structre gets duplicated when I save! I thought the zip file was corrupt so I made another copy and downloaded it but with the same result!
    Has anyone had the same problem???
    Best regards
    Benny Lange

    Problem solved! By 7-zip. It was actually XP's integrated zip tool that just didn't show the underlaying structure. And Total Commander also did the work if used in the same way as 7-zip, but to edit the second level zip file directly did not work as TC opened that file in a temp directory instead of continuing at the level of the first zip file. That kind of editing directly in a file two zip levels down actually worked in TC 6.x but now I have 7.05 and perhaps things has changed.

  • Import files from internet archive

    Please help, in plain english, how can I import grateful dead shared files from internet archive into itunes so I can load some awesome Dead shows onto my ipod? I have one ready here- it's a zipped MP3 file full of tunes... what next?
      Windows XP

    it's a zipped MP3 file full of tunes
    old head,
    More likely it is a zipped folder full of mp3s. Correct? If so, and if it is on your hard drive, double-click it, and when the dialog comes up, click on "Extract all Files." Follow the onscreen steps and you will end up with a regular folder full of mp3s. Put the folder wherever you want it on your hard drive.
    Then in iTunes, use the File > Add Folder to Library command, point it to your new folder, and the songs will add to your library.
    Once you've confirmed that everything worked, you can delete the original zip folder.
    If anything looks different at any step, pls post again. Otherwise, enjoy the trip.

  • How to extract iMovie files from an archived iDVD project

    Hi,
    After archiving an iDVD project which contained several individual iMovies to my back up hard disk I deleted all of the individual files on my internal HD to free some space.
    Query: Is it possible to extract an individual iMovie file from the archived project for future editing revealing all of the transitions, audio tracks, etc back in iMovie ?
    I have used 'show package contents' and can see the individual movies as Quick Time files but when I load these into iMovie all I get is the whole movie as one single clip.
    I suspect the answer is once it's archived I cannot retrieve the iMovie files ?
    Any help appreciated. Many thanks.
    iMac G5 20" 2.0GHz 1Gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   eMac 1GHz 512Mb RAM

    ...I ..can see the individual movies as Quick Time files but when I load these into iMovie all I get is the whole movie as one single clip. I suspect the answer is once it's archived I cannot retrieve the iMovie files ?
    that is correct: hitting "export" or share in iM creates a single movie(file); what you have in mind is the imovie project (e.g. where you can change titles, transitions etc)... to make this accessible you need to backup that iM folder/package (the one with a star)... these files are for sure much bigger = containing more data...

    Simply remove the corrupt zip file, and replace it with the valid copy of the zip file.

  • Corrupted zip file of download pkg

    I've tried downloading App server 7 (Platform edition) several times and from several download locations but each time I get corrupted zip file and can't open it. BTW, other stuff (Application framework, Studio 4, etc) is downloaded correctly. I'm using IE 6.
    Has anyone experienced anything like this ?

    No clue. Too few info.
    Post a small demo code that is generally compilable, runnable and could reproduce your problem. See: http://homepage1.nifty.com/algafield/sscce.html and http://www.yoda.arachsys.com/java/newsgroups.html

  • Trying to link to a zip file from flash

    I am trying to link to a zip file from flash for my users to
    download. I can link to the file fine using get URL. The problem is
    on a PC I am having trouble with the users settings for blocking
    pop ups. If the user clicks one of the two links it works, if they
    then click the other, it blocks the download from happening?
    Works perfect on a MAC.
    Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    What does your code look like?
    getURL("/yourfile.zip") shouldn't create any pop-ups

  • I've downloaded a zip file from noisetrade, but it won't open on my mac...what shall I do?

    Hey guys, wondering if someone could give me some help. I've downloaded a zip file from noisetrade, but it won't open on my mac.I keep clicking and it vhanges to a cgzp file..and even when I changed the end bit to zip, it won't open. I've tried the unarchive app andthat hasn't worked either...what shall I do?
    Thanks in advance :-)

    iWork (no 's') for iOS & iWork for Mac have not gone away.
    iWork.com (beta) (also no 's') is going away the end of July. iWork.com (beta) is/was an online method of sharing iWork files with other users & never moved out of beta in 3+ years. It is a completely different entity than the iWork apps & is not & never has been necessary for the iWork apps to function.
    A Numbers document, as well as Pages or Keynote documents, cannot be opened on a PC. You must first export them to a file that a PC can use. For Numbers that is generally Excel. In Numbers on your iPad tap the wrench & then tap Share & Print & choose Excel as the file type.
    As for transfering a file from a PC to an iPad, I'm not sure as I don't use a PC.

  • How do I get a download zip file from firefox to my desktop

    I download zip files from different web sites and they go to the download folder in firefox, but I can't access them to open,unzip, or work with them on my computer offline. How can I move them from the download folder in firefox to my computer desktop?

    Hi,
    In order to open ZIP files, you have to download an app to enable the opening of the ZIP. Here's one you can use: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.winzip.android
    Next, when you install that, open it and go to your Download directory. It should either be in sdcard0, sdcard, or sdcard1, then go to Download.
    Once you find it, touch and hold the file, then click '''Unzip here''' and it will extract the files in the ZIP folder.
    Let me know if this works!

  • Opening a zip file from Mail - what should happen?

    I've been using a Mac for a little under a week so bear with me...!
    I receive a zip file in Mail and I want to open it, so naturally I click on it. I get a "may contain an application" warning. I click "Open". A window briefly appears with an "Unarchiving" progress bar, then vanishes. And that's it!
    Is this expected behaviour, or has something messed up here (most likely me!)? I would expect some sort of helper application to open showing the zip contents maybe?
    Thanks!
    Matt

    Hi Matt,
    Welcome to the discussions and to Macs!
    Zip has un-zipped the attachment contents into the place where the zip file was kept. Often that's a clever thing for it to do, but in this case the location is a place Mail chose rather than you!
    You might look in <home>/Library/Mail Downloads. If not, use Spotlight to search for the zip file by name. That directory will also hold the unzipped contents.
    Next time: Drag the zip file from the email to your desktop, then double-click it to unzip. The contents will show right up on the desktop too.
    Good luck,
    John
