Corrupted iTunes question

If this exact question has already been answered, sorry in advance.
Long story short, I turned on my laptop, which started up very slowly, for some reason, and then attempted to open my iTunes. It gave me a message indicating that it couldn't be recognized because it had been corrupted and it was restored to an iTunes with nothing downloaded.
So, here's my question: when I plug in my iPod (Nano, 4th gen) will it erase everything currently on there as it updates? If so (which I certainly don't want), is there anyway to restore the music that was in there?
Thanks in advance for any answers.

Do you have your iPod set up in iTunes to "automatic sync"? If so, think very carefully before you decide what to do as this COULD result in removing all the music from your Pod. If you have it set up to "manually manage" your music, there is no problem : you can attach the iPod and nothing will happen until you tell it... BUT...
1. Is it just the app itself / the iTunes Library database that were corrupted? If so, have a look for your music files, which should all (or mostly) still be there - look for an iTunes Music folder or, if your music was stored outside iTunes itself (you had 'copy tracks to my iTunes library when importing' UNchecked) then it will be safe where it was.
2. If iTunes is behaving like a new fresh copy and has set up a new iTunes Library database file, then it won't recognise your iPod from before, and will prompt you to set up its Settings via the Summary screen the first time you connect it. Just don't tick "automatic sync" !
3. You could get hold of software that allows you to copy from the iPod back to iTunes (Google "ipod to itunes" for a whole stack of stuff) - but only do this if you can't locate your music files.

New! Importing iPhoto files onto an iPhone 3G with iTunes question
Posted: Aug 14, 2008 9:07 AM Reply Email
    So letme get this striaght...
You first create an album in iPhoto 08 with just the images you want put onto your iPhone 3G.
NEXT: you connect tou iPhone 3G and iTunews will open. You go to the iPhone in iTunes and select the photo tag and then select the album you had made for import and sync it with you iPhone. Will large image files automatically be resized for use on the iPhone 3G?
Most of my .JPG files are from 4 -5 MB each in size. What will it do with a RAW image file?

I am not 100% sure, but i BELIEVE that they do get resized because as it's syncing with the iPhone, iTunes will state that it is optimizing the selected photos for the iPhone, just like we would see for the iPod.

    Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash
Im desperate to sort my issue and I think this could help but I'm not sure if these steps are the same for a Mac. I dont want to break anything and I want my content back.
Im trying to fix an issue where after a crash I am now getting this:
"The file iTunes Library.itl does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has created a new library and renamed this file to "iTunes Library (Damaged)"

Ok great, I pressed ahead and tried to do it and found all the right bits but for some reason iTunes Library.itl wouldn't let me rename it and I also couldn't do the finding a new library thing by holding down iTunes as I still just got the same warning that the library isn't valid and its been renamed and replaced.
    Any pointers?

  • Corrupt iTunes installation - file MSVCR80.dll needs to be reinstalled.

Where do I find the file MSVCR80.dd to reintall - apparently caused by corrupt iTunes?? Thanks.

Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

  • Corrupt iTunes library .itl file - help turingtest2

turingtest2 - I've read majority of your suggestions for people who have had corrupt itunes libraries and I was wondering if you could help before I spend 2-4 hours trying to fix my library.  Here is my issue:
I started iTunes today and found that only music in "the cloud" is showing up in my music library.  I googled this issue and came across your suggestions.
My last backup .itl file is from December 30th so I don't really want to use this.  I have made a ton of changes to my library since then.
The .iTunes Music Library.xml is fairly recent, however it is not as up-to-date as the library on my iPhone is.  There are numerous playlists and changes I've made since then as well.
Is there a way I can export the format of my itunes library from my device?  I'm not sure if the .itl or .xml is stored on the actual device, I assume it's probably not and just used for iTunes and then iTunes formats your device based on the converted .itl file.
I have all my music on my computer so that's not an issue, I just would like to have all the playlists I've created and changes I've made to my library.  My ideal situation would be to grab this file from my device, re-create my library, then sync it up with this library, which will take some time but I'll still have the exact same setup.
Otherwise, I'll have to use the older iTunes Music Library.xml and try to re-create all my playlists and add/remove the changes I've made to the library.
    Help is appreciated, thanks.

What are you seeing, a blank itunes library?
Add the music from your folders back into itunes, then.
Either drag & drop from a Windows Explorer screen into itunes - drop the top-level music folder onto the word LIBRARY near the top left.
Or do it through the itunes menu > File > Add Folder to Library

Can anyone give me advice on how to deal with a corrupted itunes movie rental? I tried to download a movie and have been continuously trying to download it through the "check for available downloads" option, but it will not download.

I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not downloading properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the entry, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.
(Not entirely sure what happens after you click that link, but fingers crossed it should be relatively straightforward.)

  • Sync iOS Apps to iTunes - Questions on how exactly this works...

I'm going to put my questions up top, but my understanding of the current system is below, and may be relevant to the questions, if you'd like to read through it.
How can I back up / restore a SINGLE app, including its data (e.g. a game save file), to either iTunes or the cloud... or anything else for that matter. Does syncing an app to iTunes serve this purpose?
What IS the purpose of syncing an iOS app to iTunes? Does this sync include the data stored on my iOS device? For example, if I have a game in which I've made progress, is this progress stored on both my iPhone and my Mac once I've synced the app to iTunes?
If data IS synced along with the app, how is this data managed? Say I have two iPhones, both with the same game but different progress in each. If I sync iPhone A with iTunes, then sync iPhone B, will iPhone A's data overwrite iPhone B's? Or are there two versions of this app floating around on my mac?
If data is NOT synced along with the app, why on earth would I want a bunch of huge storage-hogging iOS apps that are identical to what I could download from the App Store taking up GIGABYTES of space on my MacBook's SSD?
And finally, should the answer to question 4 be "there is no reason to store 42GB worth of useless apps on your 256GB SSD alongside your already gigantic iOS device backup files," how would I go about removing these apps stored in iTunes without iTunes trying to delete them from my iOS device every time I want to sync some TV shows or podcasts?
    My Understanding So Far:
Of the many things Apple has addressed and improved upon over the years, backing up iOS app data has strangely not been one of them. As I understand it, the only way to back up an app, including its data (e.g. the save data for a game), is to do a FULL backup of the ENTIRE device. The only way to restore an app, including the data that you backed up, is to restore the ENTIRE device, all other apps included, to a previous state.
The driving force behind these questions is that I'd like the option to delete an app from my iPhone when I'm finished with it - but I'd also like the option to re-download it in the future and pick up where I left off. In a perfect world, all these apps would automatically sync through iCloud or GameCenter, or at least have that option to "upload to iCloud" or "restore from iCloud." Even with these apps, I'm not entirely sure where the backed up files exist - somewhere on my iCloud drive separate from my iPhone backup, photos, contacts, etc? Is there a way to see a list of apps that are storing things in my iCloud drive, and even manage this data?
So if I wanted to back up an app's data that does NOT automatically back up to iCloud, it seems my only option would be to install one of the many 3rd party Mac <-> iOS data transfer apps, and copy the contents of the "Documents" folder to a designated directory on my Mac. Then I could delete the app off my iPhone. Say in the future I re-download the app - I'd use the same data transfer app to copy the backed-up data to the re-downloaded app's Documents folder, and we're back in business. The only downside is that if it's been a while and the app has undergone updates, this backed-up data might be corrupt or no longer relevant. Plus, it's kind of a hassle.
When I discovered iTunes was syncing my apps to my Mac, I thought it might be serving as a way to back up my apps, data included, to my computer. Okay, it seemed like a little overkill to sync the whole app along with the data, but when I discovered that you could UPDATE the apps within iTunes, I thought apple had solved the problem of storing backed-up data for out-of-date versions of an app - simply update the app in iTunes, it does what's necessary to your backed-up data, and when you want to put the app back on your iPhone, voila! Your old data's there, AND you've got the most recent version! But apparently this is not at all how iTunes app syncing works.
As I NOW understand it, when iTunes "syncs" an app to your Mac, it includes only the app's core data - the same as if you'd just downloaded it from the App Store, and it does so for EVERYTHING you've purchased, ever, whether or not it's on any of your iOS devices. I can see how this could be convenient if you live on a farm and want to restore an old app to your iPhone without an internet connection, but I don't think it's worth, unexaggerated, a FIFTH of my hard drive. Worse, I can't figure out how to get rid of them.
    TL;DR
So, if you're still with me, what is the purpose of iTunes App Sync, and if it's as useless as I think it is, how do I get rid of it for good?

You can upgrade to Snow Leopard and skip over Leopard, and only upgrade to Lion later if wanted/needed. snow Leopard specs/requirements below.

  • Two iTUnes questions...

I have two questions that experienced users may be able to answer:
    - Most of my albums show in itunes with all the songs that belong to it. However, some Albums show one album cover for each single song on the album. How can I unify all songs that belong to one album into one album cover on itunes (I did already check if the underlying album information differs from song to song, but it seems to appear identical)?
    - How can I ad album art work to all songs of one album simultaneously and not have to drag and drop for each single song of an album while playing the song?
Anyones help and hints are highly appreciated!

    1) http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1468
Select all the tracks at once and make sure Artist and Album are correct. Then head over to the options tab, and check and uncheck "Part of a Compilation"=Yes/No.
    2) Click on the words *Now Playing* above the artwork. It will change to *Selected Item*. You can select all the tracks at once (without them playing), and drag the artwork into it.
edit- Call me superstitious, but I think you have a chance of corrupting your tracks by writing tags to them while they're playing.

  • Corrupt itunes library.xml

The last time I opened iTunes, it told me my library file was corrupt and began importing my library XML file. iTunes doesn't keep a very good job of syncing the XML file with the library because only about 1/10th of the import was accurate. I lost all of my play counts and dates - added, modified, and last played. So, as it is, my library is almost informationally worthless. My question is, since I have the damaged library file, is there anyway to extract what wasn't corrupt from it, or to repair it by importing the music from my itunes music folder which contains all of my current music
Are there any common programs to do this? Any tips or tricks?
    bmo

You might want to check versiontracker.com for iTunes utilities. There may be one that will salvage iTunes files. I don't have any personal experience with iTunes salvaging utilities, so I have nothing else to recommend. I do know that versiontracker.com is usually a pretty good place to check for useful utilities, if you don't find a specific answer by searching this discussion forum.
When you have your library repaired (hopefully a repair can be done) make regular backups of all your iTunes files you don't want to lose. The iTMS suggests this after each purchase I've made and I think it's a good practice to get in the habit of doing once a week, or once a month if you don't make too many changes to your library.

  • Corrupted iTunes folder within iPod_Control--What to Do?

i posted this same question in another part of the website, but i think i might have better luck here
I'm the owner of and ipod mini. About 2 months ago my ipod ran into a series of problems which lead to a persistent folder appearing with an exclamation point. The people at the apple service hotline told me this represented a software error but that they could not fix it since it was no longer under the one year warranty. So after about a week of trying all sorts of things to fix it including restoring it with the menu+select function and then restoring it using iPod Updater, I gave up. and i saw it this past few days on my nightstand and decided to give it another shot. now i'll skip a little bit and get right to the point. i fixed it slightly, i got it to get past the error sign. but today i tried opening it up in iTunes and my computer (running on Windows XP) gave me an error message saying that the iTunes folder within ipod_control was corrupted/unreadable. now for my question: is it possible to fix/replace this corrupted file so my ipod can function and communicate with iTunes, or should i just give up and go back to CDs?

Try uninstalling iTunes, restart your computer, then reinstall the latest version of iTunes:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Also, try restoring the iPod software using the latest update:
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
Both of these actions should theoretically replace whatever file is corrupted.
