Cost of Java Card, Reader, Tools etc

Hello All..
I could see old data about cost of Java Card, Reader, tools etc discussed way back in feb 2006..
Does any one have recent cost data who can share here.
Like to know approximate cost that i should incur to buy Java Card, Reader, associated tools,IDE etc.
it would be nice to discuss about vendor details and cost of the product they offer.
thanks

The major factor in determining cost is quantity. The more u want, the cheaper they cost. For developer cards, manufacturers already have them "on the shelf" so there's no manufacturing cost involved. But as you move to real-world deployment, then you start getting a different cost model. Then issues of applets, card management systems, infrastructure start to affect the cost of a card. I've had a business model that made the total price of one 32k java card cost $100 due to those factors.
As far as readers go, it's different. Assuming you want desktop readers, you need to deal with issues of lost readers, PCMCIA or USB. Most deployments I've dealt with went with USB so they are portable to multiple hardware.
Assuming you mean development tools, JCOP is the king so far. For deployment tools, well that's expensive mainly because the players use a closed proprietary solution. Also, if you are doing PKI deployments, then you'll need a CA and then HSMs come into play and that just recks havoc on costing !!!!!
Happy Deployment !!!!!

  • Java Card Development Tool and Cards.

    Hello all,
    I'm thinking to purchase some Java Card Development Tools and Java Cards.
    Could you guys recommend any?
    Now I'm checking the Schlumberger's Cyberflex Access SDK. If I buy this, which card do I have to choose? 'Cyberflex Access Developer Card'?
    Howabout Gemplus? Oberthur? or G&D? and anything else?
    I look forward to hearing from you guys,
    Thank you.

  • Why do we need IDE or tools for java card programming?

    Hi,
    I am a newbie to java card, using java card kit tools themself, we can test and burn the code into card right?
    then why do we need IDE for java card, please correct me , if i am wrong,
    Thanks in advance,
    Sri.

    Dear Sri,
    We have compiler, linker etc for every language starting of from C or C++ or Java. JDK has all the tools necessary to develop and run a Java program. Similarly Java Card Development Kit has all the tools for developing and deploying a Java Card applet. But what an IDE does is too integrate all these tools and make it easier for the JavaCard programmer to develop his applets. Just like Eclipse is used for Java applet development.And not everytime the code is burned to the card. Its only during masking code is burned to the card, i.e if u can call it burning. Masking makes an applet permanent on the card.

  • Default applets on brand new java card and spec support

    Hi,
    I have got brand new java card reader and real java card.
    I want to just access it using Java and see if I can access stuff on the java card before i go ahead with next things.
    I was thinking of just doing select on some applet which is present on brand new java card by default.
    1. Does anyone know if any default applet is present on java card?
    2. If yes, AID of that?
    3. Is there any APDU by which I can find out which java card spec that card supports?
    Btw, I am using Java Card 2.2.2 and the card i have should also have same support.
    Edited by: unic.man on Jul 12, 2008 2:11 AM

    >
    1. I know that any smart-card has a universally unique id which can be retrieved pro grammatically. Can you please tell me the APDU/API to retrieve it on Host app side? If not, card side at least?
    I don't know much about unique IDs but basically you've got the ATR which is given to you every time the card is powered on. The ATR identifies a particular family of cards. If you want to identify each card you need to have a look at the GET DATA command (in Global Platform) and especially the CPLC (Card Production Life Cycle). Apparently you can get a unique ID by combining the IC batch identifier and the IC serial number.
    2. I'm also struggling with deploying the app. It is not detecting the default installer applet via apdutool. I found some articles and netbeans plug-in talking about keys to download applet on card. Do you know standard keys/derivated keys to start secured channel?I don't think you can use the JCDK to install an applet on a real card. If you have a JCOP card I advise you to get the JCOP tools. And yes you will need the keys to establish a secure channel but I don't know what the default keys are on a JCOP card.

  • J2me = Java Card App ?

    hi ,
    Can anyone tell me if the j2me application is considered a Java Card Application ?
    Sorry i'm confused abt this 2 things.
    Thanks for advice.
    From Steve

    Dear,
    so if i done an application for java handphone using
    j2me midlet.
    this application is Java Card Application ?
    pls correct me if i'm wrong .
    Thanks
    From Steve.No.
    J2ME is the general term for all the Java running on the embedded devices.
    There are generally 3 types under j2me.
    1. J2ME for the embedded PC.
    2. J2ME for the mobile phone.
    3. J2ME for the Java Card.
    These three are different in the configurations and profiles.
    So your MIDlet application cannot run on Java Card.

  • How to read card reader (bar code reader) in simple java program ?

    hai all
    how to manipulate (read/write) card readers (or bar code reader ) in
    a java program ?
    should i import any particular package library ?
    pls give me any sample code or tutorials or tools, etc (whatever you have) .
    i am new to this card reader category

    Nearly all card readers and barcode readers I've ever seen simply stick their input right onto stdin, so you can capture it just as if it had been typed in on a keyboard

  • Java Card Gurus.. help needed!!! Could be a hidden bug with JavaCard Tools!

    Hello,
    I've run into a small problem, if u could help me out, Id be really grateful.
    The problem lies in the WAY the tools are used(apdutool, jcwde etc). The project envisages the running of the tools from a RELATIVE point of view and not absolute. That is, (simplistically speaking),
    The Host side is handled thus:
    I AM NOTrunning jcwde as : jcwde -p 9025 jcwde.app
    The mode is : c:\javacarddk\bin\jcwde.bat -p 9025 c:\temp\raj\jcwde.app
    The Card side is handled thus :
    The CAP file generation is : c:\javacarddk\bin\converter.bat -config c:\temp\raj\walletfile.opt
    The SCR file generation is : c:\javacarddk\bin\scriptgen.bat -o wallet.scr com/sun/..../javacard/wallet.cap
    However. the SERVER responds positively with the "T=0 listening on port 9025" message,
    but as soon as the CLIENT is started, ie
    c:\javacarddk\bin\apdutool c:\temp\raj\wallet.scr,
    The following exception is thrown :(SERVER)
    java.net.SocketException: Connection reset by peer: JVM_recv in socket input str
    eam read
    jcwde terminating on receipt of SimulationException. See previous messages for
    cause.
    and on the CLIENT :
    com.sun.javacard.apdutool.ReaderWriterError: Card powered down. (0x15)
    Please help, as the source codes of the JavaCard API are not available, so I am unable to determine if this
    RELATIVE path access is the root of the problem.
    Any help is appreceiated!!!!
    Thanks
    --Raj

    cref is not the same as JCWDE.
    JCWDE uses class files to emulate Java Card environment. It doesn't support package installation.
    If you want to test a package using JCWDE you should a) add path to your class files to classpath that is used by JCWDE and b) specify in JCWDE configuration file AIDs for your applets.
    JCWDE receives APDU commands and transfer them to your classes, everything is executed in usual java VM. You can even put debug output (System.out.println(...)) into your sources.
    cref if a 'c reference implementation' of Java Card VM. It executes Java Card bytecodes and emulates real device. It supports package installation (scriptgen/apdutool) and works with converted packages.
    If you want to test a package using cref you should compile sources, convert class files into cap file, create a script for package installation and use apdutool to install and 'run' package in cref.

  • Java Card Tools

    Hi All,
    Im new to this Forum and even to java cards. I would like to know the proper tools to use for java card development and guidelines. Is there anybody around who could help me in this regard.
    Thanks in Advance
    Ganesh

    Hello,
    Tools ?? hmm...
    What?
    Three basic things about a java card application development is
    1. Write a code (you need java card libraries - find them)
    2. Compile it (to generate .class files - simple as compiling a normal java code)
    3. Convert it (to generate .cap/ .jar / .ijc / .ldr etc etc... - depending on what format you require.) - this a the one you can load on your java card.
    How?
    There are no generic tools available to do it all.. but of-course there is one. Try to get SIM Alliance Loader. It can compile-convert-load(all three steps).
    Hope this help. Revert if you need more info on this.

  • Java aplication not able to detect card reader sometimes

    Hi
    We have a Java application (jre1.6.0_05.) which runs as window service under "Local System". It tries to detect card reader after every one minute. Normally it is working fine. However on some machines (which can be Windows XP, 2003 Server etc) some times it is not able to detect Card Reader, while other applications (which are not Java based) are able to detect. Sometimes service restart helps in solving the issue, but it reoccurs again after few hours/days.
    Below is the exception we get:
    javax.smartcardio.CardException: list() failed
    at sun.security.smartcardio.PCSCTerminals.list(PCSCTerminals.java:109)
    at javax.smartcardio.CardTerminals.list(CardTerminals.java:55)
    Below is the code we are using to get list of terminals:
    TerminalFactory factory = TerminalFactory.getDefault();
    try {
    terminals = factory.terminals().list();
    } catch (CardException e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    }Any idea what might be causing this random problem?

    Hi,
    According to the source for OpenJDK 6 (b19) the only way to get the exception you posted was with a PCSCException being thrown with the root exception wrapped in the new exception.
    // from PCSCTerminals.list(State state)
    try {
        // do some stuff to get the reader list
    } catch (PCSCException e) {
        throw new CardException("list() failed", e);
    }If this was not the case in the version you have, you will definitely see the root cause with the new JDK.
    Cheers,
    Shane

  • Ant tools: converter java card -  class file  not belonging to the package!

    Hi
    I have another problem with converter. Could you help me please again if you have the time?
    I have created a directory when I save the class files generated by javac. After That , I use convert in this way:
    <convert
    JCA="true"
    EXP="true"
    CAP="true"
    packagename="testUn/classes/testUn"
    packageaid="0x01:0x01:0x01:0x01:0x01:0x01:0x01:0x01:0x02:0x00"
    majorminorversion="1.0"
    verbose = "true">
    <AppletNameAID
    appletname="testUn.classes.testUn.PorteAppUn"
    aid="0x01:0x01:0x01:0x01:0x01:0x01:0x01:0x01:0x02:0x00:0x00"/>
    <classpath refid="classpath"/>
    </convert>
    Here is the answer of the computer:

    I do not understand why this unique applet class file does not belong to its own package. Is someone an idea?
