Could not chdir to home directory /private/var/root: Permission denied

Hello,
Something happened yesterday on my terminal. I was using it without issue via remote login (SSH), then an hour later when i logged in it saw this:
I thought it was weird since I wasn't loggin in as root, just my regular user.
I then went over to the computer in question and opened a terminal, and saw this:
It's requiring a password as soon as I open the terminal...
I am using Server.app on the machine, could this be the cause? I've never seen this sort of error before. It seems to think my user account is root?

The usual trigger for these sorts of Terminal.app environment oddities is something weird in the local login scripts.
See here and here for some related details on login scripts, if you're not familiar with that part of bash.
Some add-on tools can modify these bash scripts and sometimes without the user realizing it.  (Errors related to PATH are one of the more common symptoms here, but all sorts of weirdness is possible.)
Usual suggestion is to see if a different login works (different user), and also to rename (mv) the usual login files away from their standard names to disable them, and closing and restarting Terminal.app.
In general and FWIW, you should not be logging in as root.  At all.  That's something that Apple has been discouraging for a while now.
Server.app should not be modifying the login scripts.

  • Accidentally deleted /private/var/root

    Hello All!
I have accidentally deleted the directory /private/var/root/. Is there anything important in there?
The system has recreated the directory. However, there is no .forward and no .CFUserTextEncoding file anymore. Also, there were some .GlobalPreferences.plist files that didn't reappear. I also had to reconfigure the multiple desktops in my account, which is a bit weird as this setting should not be stored in the root directory but in my user directory?
    Thanks for some inputs.

Restore its content from your backup. Otherwise, you will need to reinstall OS X.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • User home directory at /var/imap is unavailable

We're running a single 10.5.7 server and recently migrated our mail to a new location from the default /var/imap and var/spool/imap. Since that time, I've been seeing the following log entries pop up when a user attempts to log in to the mail server. An example:
    Feb 5 10:19:37 ServerName imapd: [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] username
[6608]: CFPreferences: user home directory at /var/imap is unavailable. User domains will be volatile.
We migrated the mail using a process nearly identical to the one found at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6600016&#6600016
I have checked the settings and paths in:
    cyrus.conf
    imapd.conf
    (postfix) main.cf
    (postfix) master.cf
All of the paths point to the correct new paths, which are:
    /Volumes/Resources/Mail/imap
    /Volumes/Resources/Mail/spool/imap
All users are able to access their accounts and use the mail server. What we're seeing is periodic periods of high latency (messages taking minutes to send) and occasionally odd problems with users' Sent folders (a sent message appearing twice with the same timestamp, even though the outgoing mail filter indicates it was only sent once). I'm making the assumption that these intermittent problems are related to the user home pointing to the wrong path.
I've looked through the forums and googled the phrase, but haven't found anything that would point me toward finding the setting in the mail services that remains incorrect.
We also intermittently receive the following mail-related message in the mailaccess.log:
Feb 5 10:36:07 Rivendell master[865]: can't open com file: /var/imap/.smd.imap.com (No such file or directory)
This appears to be a similar problem, but again, the location of the setting I need to change eludes me.
Thanks for any help or pointers.

Here's the solution that finally fixed this problem and removed latency problems that seem to have been associated with it.
    (1) Stopped mail services with terminal.
    (2) Opened the Server Admin application.
    (3) Under Mail/Settings/Advanced/Database I changed the path to the original location, /var/imap and /var/spool/imap.
    (4) Clicked "Save."
    (5) In the same spot, changed the paths back to the new location.
    (6) Clicked "Save."
    (7) Restarted the mail server.
I have no idea what hidden setting that's not in the conf files that this changed, but it removed the error messages and the latency.

  • Could not connect to " home shared iTunes library name "

I'm having an issue with iTunes/ Apple TV. Actually it has been ongoing. I have a particular iTunes library shared on a private subnet (together with the Apple TVs) from a Mac Mini. I can connect and play content any time with iTunes on another computer 100% reliably. But around 60% of the time when I try to connect to it from any of my four Apple TV (2's) an error comes up saying "Could not connect to "<home shared iTunes library name>" ", "Make sure the computer is on the same network as your Apple TV. the iTunes version is up to date and iTunes is running". The answer to those questions (as always with such messages is obviously 'yes':
Yes of course we are on the same network. If I wasn't, the library wouldn't have even shown up in the first place before selecting it
Yes iTunes as always is the latest version thanks to Mac Software Update
    Again 'dah'. See response #1
If I restart the offending iTunes library the error is resolved (although sometimes it does require reboot of the Apple TV) but could reappear as early as within the next 24 hours. This issue has been occuring for a very long time however appears to be increasing in frequency. It occured as well on the Apple TV (v1).
Anyone with clues on what's going on here?
    Thanks
    Greg

I agree that the first debug point should be the network. Though like Greg, I use a Mac Mini to serve up movies to a couple of Apple TVs. From the 'problem' Apple TV, I could see other iTunes movie libraries on other Mac(s), and those would work/play fine. It's only when I try to connect to the iTunes Library of the Mac Mini that I have this issue. It's almost like it's asleep, and doesn't respond. Though I can mount the library folder, and play movies from other Macs w/o a problem while the Apple TV still has the problem.
As Greg mentions, closing and re-opening iTunes on the Mini solves the issue (though only temporarily).
The only difference that I have (non-consistency) is that my Mac Mini is an older model, and cannot be upgraded to run Lion (10.7.x) like my other Macs. The Mini is running 10.6.8, and iTunes 10.6.1 (32-bit). My Macs are running 10.7.3 and the 64-bit version of iTunes 10.6.1.
Is it possible it could be a 10.6 vs. a 10.7 issue? Greg, which version of OS X are your Macs running?

    Hi,
we had some issues recently with this, and the trace also mentions proxy issues. Could you please try direct connection in that preferences  (in other words do not use proxy settings in NWDS) ?
Is it possible that there is some kind of web-filter application installed that is blocking the request?
I'd suggest to google for this error:
407 (Proxy Authentication Required ( Forefront TMG requires authorization to fulfill the request. Access to the Web Proxy filter is denied.  ))
Perhaps the problem is not even sap related.
Is Microsoft Forefront TMG (Threat Management Gateway after some googleing) perhaps configured in the way that it is not allowing this request ? Perhaps the IT guys of your company could look into this.

  • When I try to save, I keep getting the message "The document could not be saved. You don't have permission" - even though I am the Administrator and the Get Info displays "Administrator and (me)".

When I try to save, I keep getting the message "The document could not be saved. You don't have permission" - even though I am the Administrator and the Get Info displays "Administrator" and my_name(me)". Also, when I do a disk permission repair, it always repairs the same applications and files. Last night, I did a disk permission repair twice and both times it took a long time and did the exact same repair both times.

Disk Utility won't repair your home folder.  Sounds like your home folder permissions are messed up tho.  Try repairing them this way by using Lion Recovery.
    1. Restart Lion, and before you hear the chime, hold down the Command and R keys.
    2. You’ll be at the Repair Utilities screen. Click the Utilities item in the Menu Bar, then click Terminal.
    3. In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
    4. The password reset utility window launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the dropdown below it, select the user account where you’re having issues.
    5. At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the Reset button there.
The reset process takes just a couple of minutes. When it’s done, exit the programs you’ve opened and restart your Mac.
    Good luck

  • IBooks crashes on startup - Could not obtain real path to the container root

    Hello,
I was able to open up iBooks when I first installed Mavericks, but now it will not launch. I get the menu bar items and then it throws an alert "Couldn’t communicate with a helper application. Try your operation again. If that fails, quit and relaunch the application and try again."
I also pulled the logs from the console

... and goes on and on until click ok on the alert.
All updates installed. The only thing in '~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService'  is Container.plist
    Any ideas?

    Start "Terminal" and type:
    mkdir ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data"
It will add a missing folder that is needed.
    iBooks should now launch.
I've had a lot of similar errors after restoring from Time Machine. I've also had to do the same things for quick look, "com.apple.quicklook.ui.helper" and "com.apple.lateragent", and iPhoto "com.apple.iPhoto".
After creating the Data subfolders they'd all miraculously launch!

  • The document could not be saved.  You don't have permission.

I have 4 users on my iMac & have placed 2 files in the folder located at MACHD>Users>Me>Public>Shared the permissions of this folder are set to Read & Write for myself and 1 other user & the Shared Folder box is checked under general.  The problem is that every time one of us accesses the file we get an error stating that 'The document “xxfile name” could not be saved. You don’t have permission.' & 'To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and choose File > Get Info.'
I have fought this error for several days now and on occasion get things working but it seems as soon as the user logs out and another back in we have the same problem again.  Can anyone advise on what needs to be done so that this file can be accessed by 2 different users on the same system?
    Thank you,

Interesting thought, I'm not sure I understand though....... If I make a disk image & store the files inside then don't I have to transfer the image back and forth between users?  Or do I put that image in the shared folder I'm using and mount/unmount it from there?  I can't say as I've used a disk image before but I did some quick reading and it seems like a useful tool that is under utilized.
Thank you for any additional input.

  • The File could not be found or you don't have permission to access it.

I teach Acrobat in a junior college. For an assignment students are to share an Acrobat portfolio file via Acrobat.com. So far two students have attempted to do that, I have clicked the link in the email message generated by Acrobat.com, and in each instance the error message in this discussion heading appeared.

    Michelle,
I don't sign in. The moment Acrobat.com opens, it displays the error
message, "The File could not be found or you don't have permission to
access it." So, I'm guessing that the automatic sign-in email address is
different than the one used when sending me a shared file notice.
People use Acrobat.com to share files with individuals, most of whom
don't have Acrobat.com IDs. Those non-members gain access smoothly.
There shouldn't be a bouncer at the door to refuse entry to those who
have Acrobat.com IDs but who happen to have multiple email addresses.
You need to simply allow entry to all persons receiving invitations to
download files whether or not they have an Acrobat.com ID.

  • For four days I have been unable to open a lot of documents. When I try I get a message "The document "name" could not be opened. You don't have permission. This has happened to an important letter which I corrected four times. My Mac has altered the name

This problem began when I typed in an address http www etc., making one mistake in the address. I corrected it and then tried to copy the address because it was long (I wanted to be able to acces it another time), and that's when the trouble starrted. I just copt documents to get a new one because it's quicker, but it is unorthodox, I know. Since then whenever I copy a document i cannot open it, and it often puts a gobledegook ending to the document name. I've started emailing texts to myself so as to keep them, but I MUST be able to use documents normally. I hava a MacBook Pro, using OS Mountain Lion 10.8.5. I don't like it. It's fairly new, and has messed up my system of documents : the size is alll wrong and the tabulations are worse than ever. I use text edit because I wanted to use Macdictate because I am handicapped (arthritis and firbomyalgia) but I have never been able to get it to work. Since I changed OS I cannot use Text edit properly any more. Please help me. I think it must be a bug that came through when I was putting this address in four days ago. I went to the site once I'd corrected the address and it was perfectly normal. I shall ring them today and ask them if this has happened to anyone else. I live in France. Thank you for your advice. Because I am handicapped and I do not dirve, it is very difficult to get to a Mac store. I deleted Mac cloud documents because I don't want to use it and I thought it might solve the problem, but it didn"t.

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

    Hi All,
I am using secure store applicatin id(set credentials using my windows account) to get the data from sql server using entity framework and WCF.
When trying to run webservice I am getting below error
System.IO.FileLoadException: Could not load file or assembly 'EntityFramework, Version=5.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' or one of its dependencies. Access is denied.

But this is not correct. I can't give access to myself to bin folder or temp .
is there anyway to get rid of this error.

  • S-nail error no such directory /usr/bin/sendmail / permission denied

I am trying to get email notifications setup with smartmontools but the test email does not reach my address. s-nail is an optional dependency of smartmontools and is installed. From my understanding it should work out of the box without any configuration but it doesn't.
I attempted to send an email manually for troubleshooting purposes with this command:
sudo echo "This is the mail body" | mailx -s "This is the subject" -r sendersemail [email protected]
The mailx command produced an odd error:
/usr/bin/sendmail: No such file or directory
If I create /usr/bin/sendmail directory (and chmod it to 777) I get this error:
    /usr/bin/sendmail: Permission denied
    "/home/dom/dead.letter" 10/251
    ... message not sent.
I am lost. Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

There is no config, it's all at defaults with only s-nail package installed. Or did you mean other non-snail config? Did you use the command as per my original post exactly and was it  an external email? Did you have s-nail installed/configured before now?
I also now tried adding a .rcmail config from snail wiki linked before.
    # All the examples require v15-compat!
    set v15-compat
    # ArchLinux-specific locations of certificates.
    # Since these are subject to the ArchLinux update mechanism,
    # use only those, don't try to load OpenSSL builtin ones.
    # And use the TLS specific set: see "man 8 update-ca-trust"
    #set ssl-ca-dir=/etc/ssl/certs
    set ssl-ca-file=/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt
    set ssl-no-default-ca
    # Require secure transport via protocol version TLS v1.2, exclusively.
    # (Change this only [best on a per-account base, as below]
    # when the remote server doesn't support this protocol!)
    set ssl-method=tls1.2
    # Request strict transport security checks
    set ssl-verify=strict
    # Essential setting: choose allowed character sets
    # (Have a look at the "CHARACTER SETS" manual section)
    set sendcharsets=utf-8,iso-8859-1
    # When sending messages, wait until the Mail-Transfer-Agent finishs.
    # Only like this you'll be able to see errors reported through the exit
    # status of the MTA (including the builtin SMTP one)!
    set sendwait
    # To save a copy of sent messages somewhere (this will end up in your home directory)
    set record=sentmail.mbox
    # This may be interesting to gain some speedup when sending mail
    set mimetypes-load-control
    # This is optional, but you should get the big picture
    # by reading the manual before you leave that off
    set from="Your Name <youremail@domain>"
Still the same error. No surprise since this config doesn't add any new info that is not present in the mailx command.
