Couldn't understand "Collections" with the Java Tutorial of sun..

I've been reading the tutorials since a long time to learn without having to ask too many questions ;)
Although, I couldn't understand the way "collections" are useful, and how they can be used!
If anyone can throw in an example, and explain it! It'll be very helpful to me!
Thanks!

The richard baldwin tutorials are very good, especially his series on Collections.

  • Solution Manager systems RAM requirements - problems with the Java Engine

    Hello,
    I am about to install SAP Solution Manager 7 on a WIndows 2003 Server x64 but I need to know what the RAM requirements are? I have been having problems with the Java Engine starting and it seems to time out, I have heard that this is a very RAM hungry process and it might be why?
    Many thanks for your help in advance,
    Omar

    Hello Omar,
    To size SAP Solution Manager 7.0 EHP1 we recommend to use the SAP Solution Manager Quicksizer Tool at:
    http://service.sap.com/sizing-solman
    Here you find information on how to use the tool, how to collect input data for E2E Scenario Sizing, on SAP E2E RCA Sizing, Introscope Tuning, Wily Enterprise Manager Cluster Setup for E2E RCA Scenario and BI Aggregation Strategy in E2E Scenario.
    Please find more information about installing Solution Manager in:
    http://service.sap.com/instguides -> SAP Solution Manager
    I hope this information helps.
    Thanks,
    Mark

  • I'm stuck! Following the Java Tutorial

    I'm confused :=Q
    I am following the Java tutorial and am trying to do the ClickMe applet. The html file was saved as text in notepad. I downloaded the ClickMe and Spot source files. They compiled without errors along with the html file. I double checked my DIR and saw that I had the class files. When I went to run the applet, the little window appeared without any spot and said something about Clickme class in the heading border and then in the box it said applet not initialized. So, I went through the forum and looked for anything similar and I saw that someone said to compile like:C:\jdk1.3.1_01 javac ClickMe.java Spot.java
    So, I tried that, and I still have class files, but now I don't have the applet box showing anymore and I don't get any errors. I was successful when I did the Hello World applet, so I know it's not a class path problem or text prob. I was using typing appletviewer ClickMe.html
    I'm getting so hungup on trying to get the applets to work I am losing track of how and why they are supposed to work. It is so discouraging especially when there doesn't seem to be anyone in particular to ask.
    Does anyone have anything encouraging to offer?
    I am using JDK 1.3 on WinXP (Java has been totally enabled without using the plug in) It has worked successfully.
    Thanks in advance once again for your help.
    Karen

    I'm learning with the tutorial also ;)
    Makes about 3 months I'm doing so, and from my experience, it is much more fun to create Programs than Applets.. I always work with Swing and it is a pain to use it inside Applets (but Swing is really great to create GUIs..) Learning how to build Jar and how to use Swing helps you building up Jar files that run like EXEs ;) That gives good results!

  • Question about scope in the enum example in the Java Tutorial

    Hi,
    On page http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/javaOO/enum.html of the Java tutorial the enumeration MONDAY is not prefixed with the enum name when it is used in the function tellItLikeItIs.
    public class EnumTest {
         Day day;
         public EnumTest(Day day) {
              this.day = day;
         public void tellItLikeItIs() {
              switch (day) {
                   case MONDAY: System.out.println("Mondays are bad.");
                                  break;
                   case FRIDAY: System.out.println("Fridays are better.");
                                  break;How does the compiler know that MONDAY is the same as Day.MONDAY? Is it because of
    switch(day)Then later in the main MONDAY must be prefixed with Day. I removed Day. and it did not compile. Why is Day. necessary in main but not in tellItLikeItIs?
    public static void main(String[] args) {
              EnumTest firstDay = new EnumTest(Day.MONDAY);
              firstDay.tellItLikeItIs();Thank you.

    swtich is a special case.
    The label for each 'case' of a switch
    will infer based on the type of switch value
    switch(d) {
    case MONDAY:
    case TUESDAY:
    will automatically refer to the MONDAY and TUESDAY
    corresponding to d's type.

  • Has anyone else had problems with the latest system updates to Mac OS X v10.6.8 with the java virus patch?

    After installing the latest updates to Snow Leopard the system hangs up and will not open properly.  This is the update to Java, etc after the virus was discovered.  I have done the updates on four different systems with the same result.

    No problems with the Java update here, although I have Java disabled. Might try reapplying the Java standalone while in Safe Boot (Shift at startup chime), if you did it from Software Update.

    Hello guys..does anybody know how to install and use adobe master collection with the new lion?
    I need to use Flash and illustratore, but apparently those programmes are incompatible with the new operative sistem...
    I am a new mac users and I'd like to know if there are other similar programmes I can use with lion!

    well dude I can only let you know that as I work with those programme I don't have to pay for it is my company that pays the programme I whant to use( that's why I was asking if there where other programmes ..that I could use with lion insted that Illustrator and Flash!)..I know Adobe since 2005 and I can say that Adobs products are very good...I think that if it's an Adobe probleme or fault ..they will solve it very soon...but unfortunally I have the impression that after Jobs passed away Appel decided to change politics..and everything started to go very bad! (see FCP X)..
    good luck with apple dude..
    Where is the Apple problem? I have CS4 and CS5 running perfectly fine on my Macbook Pro. Installed 5 after Lion upgrade. Worth every cent. Adobe did have some catching up to do with Lion but with the CS5.5 update all runs fine. But not yours. So it is a problem with the Lion OS? You say you have been with Adobe since 2005. So you would be aware of all the other issues that Adobe had catching up with past Oss in Mac and Windows then. They get it right, but it is up to them. It is not up to Apple, nor Microsoft for that matter, to run around and check that every software developer in the world is running their business properly.
    And what has politics got to do with anything. Some people just have to blame Software for their poor Hardware maintainence of failure of the same.
    <The only think I can really do is to go back on my old windows...give back this orrible lap top and ask for my money back!>
    Great suggestion. You should go with that one, but good luck getting a refund.

  • Can I create a cert with the Java API only?

    I'm building a client/server app that will use SSL and client certs for authenticating the client to the server. I'd like for each user to be able to create a keypair and an associated self-signed cert that they can provide to the server through some other means, to be included in the server's trust store.
    I know how to generate a key pair with an associated self-signed cert via keytool, but I'd prefer to do it directly with the Java APIs. From looking at the Javadocs, I can see how to generate a keypair and how to generate a cert object using an encoded representation of the cert ( e.g. java.security.cert.CertificateFactory.generateCertififcate() ).
    But how can I create this encoded representation of the certificate that I need to provide to generateCertificate()? I could do it with keytool and export the cert to a file, but is there no Java API that can accomplish the same thing?
    I want to avoid having the user use keytool. Perhaps I can execute the appropriate keytool command from the java code, using Runtime.exec(), but again a pure java API approach would be better. Is there a way to do this all with Java? If not, is executing keytool via Runtime.exec() the best approach?

    There is no solution available with the JDK. It's rather deficient wrt certificate management, as java.security.cert.CertificateFactory is a factory that only deals in re-treads. That is, it doesn't really create certs. Rather it converts a DER encoded byte stream into a Java Certificate object.
    I found two ways to create a certificate from scratch. The first one is an all Java implementation of what keytool does. The second is to use Runtime.exec(), which you don't want to do.
    1. Use BouncyCastle, a free open source cryptography library that you can find here: http://www.bouncycastle.org/ There are examples in the documentation that show you how to do just about anything you want to do. I chose not to use it, because my need was satisfied with a lighter approach, and I didn't want to add a dependency unnecessarily. Also Bouncy Castle requires you to use a distinct version with each version of the JDK. So if I wanted my app to work with JDK 1.4 or later, I would have to actually create three different versions, each bundled with the version of BouncyCastle that matches the version of the target JDK.
    2. I created my cert by using Runtime.exec() to invoke the keytool program, which you say you don't want to do. This seemed like a hack to me, so I tried to avoid it; but actually I think it was the better choice for me, and I've been happy with how it works. It may have some backward compatibility issues. I tested it on Windows XP and Mac 10.4.9 with JDK 1.6. Some keytool arguments changed with JDK versions, but I think they maintained backward compatibility. I haven't checked it, and I don't know if I'm using the later or earlier version of the keytool arguments.

  • WCF WSDL shoud match with the JAVA WSDL

    Hi All,
    I have a requirement where I have the JAVA WSDL which was successfully ported to .net 4.5 as server interface. While I try to run the services by implementing the interface the WSDL output from .net doesnt match with the java wsdl.
    Can somebody say whether its possible? or is there any work around for this.
    For example
    Java WSDL
    <message name="submit">
    But .NET WSDL
    <wsdl:message name="ISubmitServiceSoap_submit_OutputMessage">
    thanks,

    It is not possible.
    WCF WSDL and JAVA WSDL has his own rule for the services, so they shoule be hard for match. But we can use the svcutil.exe(https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa347733(v=vs.110).aspx)
    to generate proxy code and config file.

    if you read it it says to open the Flex folder and change the name. I did that and the apps work but I was not asked for the serial number again. I was in in 10.4.11 and just upgraded to 10.5.4 could that have caused this as I was running fine before.

    Object[] arguments = new Object[] {secondWord};Any explanation will be greatly appreciated :)

    There are 2 lines I do not understand (but once I

    Here they are:
    Class[] parameterTypes = new Class[]
    {String.class};

    the first line simply creates an array of objects, the objects are of type Class. It then places the object referenced in the brackets into the array.

  • Problem with the firstcup tutorial

    Hi, I'm a developer that is new to Java. I walked through the "firstcup" tutorial using the netbeans 6.5.1 ide and glassfish 2.1 server.
    I thought I had successfuly completed all the code and xml config files.
    When I got to p14.html, "Building, Packaging, Deploying, and Running the firstcup Enterprise Application", I run into a problem trying to run the tutorial app.
    Posted below is the error I get in the webpage. The server log file error is too long to post because of the character limit of this forum.
    If anybody could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Also if this question should be posted on a different forum please advise,

    If you're new to Java then jumping straight into J2EE probably isn't the way to go... especially if you're totally new to programming, especially web-programming... The serverside EE-technology-stack builds on the core Java langauge and API's (J2SE)... and without at-least a basic understanding of the Java language itself I predict that you're going to really really struggle with the EE tutorials... and that therefore you'll probably give up in disgust.
    They call this page [getting started|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/index.html]... I (for one) think it's aptly named... Nobody gets to skip HelloWorld, or the universe will implode, or something ;-)

  • Problems with the ADF Tutorial for J2EE developers.

    Hi guys.
    I have completed the ADF tutorial for 4GL developers withhout any major hickups. Now I have been doing the ADF tutorial for J2EE developers (locate here http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/adf_tutorial_1013/index.htm).
    I ran into some problems around chapter 6 and after failing understanding the errors I loaded up the applicationscripts from the tutorial. However, I get an error from this script. I have tried to load up both end of chapter 5,6 and 7 and get the same error. So now I am at a total loss. So, I am turning to you. I have copied the entire error message below.
    Unfortunately JDeveloper translates some keywords to Norwegian and I have tried to translate them back into english. Forgive me if its not 100% accurate but i think you will understand the keyword. I've translated these four keywords:

  • JavaScript to Java with the Java Plugin, anyone?

    The java.sun.com web site seems to be teeming with docs on how to access JavaScript from Java, and the Netscape site seems to have plenty of docs on how to access Java methods from JavaScript using the browser's own JRE.
    But can one use JavaScript to access methods of a Java applet running under the Java Plugin? And if so, how?

    all the public methods and fields of an applet are exposed to javascript. In the <applet> tag, set...
    <applet ...otherinfo... mayscript></applet>, or
    <applet ...otherinfo... mayscript="true"></applet>
    I think the latter version is safer to use, as I think IE has issues if you just use the mayscript tag without the "true" value.
    So if that is set, in javascript all you have to do is address the applet, and call any of its public fields/methods. (Actually, I know you can call all public methods and I think you can call all the public fields as well...)
    var applet = self.document.applets[0];So now you can call all the public members, such as...
    applet.start();
    applet.stop();
    applet.myPublicFn1();
    applet.myPublicFn2(arg1, arg2);
    var val = applet.pubField1;etc.
    Note that if you're using Java2 (swing) thru the object/embed tags rather than just using the applet tag, things don't work that smoothly. I tried once and the applet wasn't actually found in the applets collection of the document. I tried finding the 'applet' object but had no such luck...
    Hope that helps.
    Good luck.
