CR memory cleanup following export to PDF

The current implementation of the Crystal Reports Java API and viewer/exporter have some severe memory/connection/object leaking issues.  We've narrowed down the source of the problem to Crystal Report specific code.  There does not appear to be a way to make the ReportClientDocument release all of its resources explicitly (DB Connections, Graphics objects, etc).  The "close()" method does not appear to do anything.  We have tried to access many different embedded objects via their getter methods and call their respective "dispose()" or "close()" methods, to no avail.
We are testing against a DB2 database from Java code.  We create a ReportClientDocument via opening an RPT file, export the report to a local PDF file, close the ReportClientDocument.  The objects that are created when we create the ReportClientDocument do not get released, garbage collected or otherwise cleaned up.  We need a way to make the ReportClientDocument immediately release these resources.
This issue is an absolute show stopper for us.  We need to resolve this ASAP.  Let me know if you need any additional info.

I opened a support ticket with SAP and they eventually found that it wasn't an issue with how my application was coded or the server was set up.
The problem lies in the JVM running on the server.
This was their reply:
Issue Description: - u201COutOfMemoryu201D exception is received when trying to export a report which possibly occurs because the ReportClientDocument object holds some resources and the close() method (used to release the resources held by ReportClientDocument object) does not seem to work as per your observations.
- The OutOfMemory error occurred because the JVM is unable to garbage collect the ReportClientDocument objects from the memory made eligible for garbage collection using the close() method.
- It was confirmed during the testing period that the close() method is releasing the ReportClientDocument objects from the memory making it eligible for garbage collection, however the Garbage collector is unable to do so.
- It was also discovered that there is a JVM bug registered on the SUN site which said that u201Cthere is a trouble with VM (Java Virtual Machine) exiting that appeared to be due to running out of memoryu201D. http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4697804
- Hence the issue is because of JVM Heap Size and the workaround for this is to increase its size. However it again depends upon the scenario. That is the users/ concurrent users accessing the reports.
- JRC depends upon JVM as it is pure java based; there is only a workaround to increase the JVM heap size.

  • LR4:Book Huge memory allocation - also after finished export to PDF

    I played with the new book feature, around 100 raw pictures using various templates. I like it a lot! Like to have somemore flexibility within the templates though.
    Then I exported to pdf which required lots of CPU & memory. This can be ok I think even though stalling the computer is a bit aggresive?
    I have never had this behaviour before. Slower yes, but this was worse.
    Once export was ready the mac book pro, 4GB was still stalled. The 1.8GB that LR4 had used was still allocated!
    I then closed LR4 and that took several minutes (backing up by default) instead of 30s.
    When closed - all is normal and when starting/stopping LR4 it was all ok again.
    Clearly a bug.

    It's the same on a PC. My book was 200 pages. RAM usage was 2.7gig (out of 8).
    These were RAW images. The resulting pdf was 30megabytes.
    I went back and used 1028pixel wide medium quality jpegs to test. The resulting pdf was still 29,500megs. Odd - you'd think it would be much smaller.
    Also, no way to see two pages wide on tablets (iPad and Blackberry)- if you have a blank left page with a photo on the right. The Adobe Reader will render pdf on a tablet thusly - picture,blank white screen(left page), picture as you view in sequence. Multi photo pages render perfectly as designed.
    There is a lot of work left to do on this book module - but it has possibilities. Foirget blurb, I like the of doing e-books in pdf.
    Just a few bumps left to sort out guys.

  • How can I auto export a PDF File using the "Smallest File Size" preset and set the Exported File Name based on information from an Imported PDF?

    Greetings all,
    I am trying to create a script to automate a PDF export process for my company for inDesign. I’m fairly new to inDesign itself and have no previous experience with javascript, although I did take C++ in high school and have found it helpful in putting this code together.
    We have an inDesign template file and then use the Multi-page PDF importer script to import PDF files. We then have to export two version of each file that we import, then delete the imported file and all of the pages to reset the template. This has to be done for nearly 1000 pdf files each month and is quite tedious. I’m working on automating the process as much as possible. I’ve managed to piece together code that will cleanup the file much quicker and am now trying to automate the PDF exports themselves.
    The files are sent to us as “TRUGLY#####_Client” and need to be exported as “POP#####_Client_Date-Range_North/South.pdf”
    For example, TRUGLY12345_Client needs to be exported as POP12345_Client_Mar01-Mar31_North and POP12345_Client_Mar01-Mar31_South.
    There are two templates built into the template file for the north and south file that are toggled easily via layer visibility switches. I need to get a code that can ideally read the #s from the imported Trugly file as well as the Client and input those into variables to use when exporting. The date range is found in the same place in the top right of each pdf file. I am not sure if this can be read somehow or if it will have to be input manually. I can put North or South into the file name based on which template layer is visible.
    I am not sure how to go about doing this. I did find the following code for exporting to PDF with preset but it requires me to select a preset and then type the full file name. How can I set it to automatically use the “Smallest File Size” preset without prompting me to choose and then automatically input some or preferably all of the file name automatically? (If the entire filename is possible then I don’t even want a prompt to appear so it will be fully automated!)
    PDF Export Code (Originally from here: Simple PDF Export with Preset selection | IndiSnip [InDesign® Snippets]):
    var myPresets = app.pdfExportPresets.everyItem().name;
    myPresets.unshift("- Select Preset -");
    var myWin = new Window('dialog', 'PDF Export Presets');
    myWin.orientation = 'row';
    with(myWin){
        myWin.sText = add('statictext', undefined, 'Select PDF Export preset:');
        myWin.myPDFExport = add('dropdownlist',undefined,undefined,{items:myPresets});
        myWin.myPDFExport.selection = 0;
        myWin.btnOK = add('button', undefined, 'OK');
    myWin.center();
    var myWindow = myWin.show();
    if(myWindow == true && myWin.myPDFExport.selection.index != 0){
        var myPreset = app.pdfExportPresets.item(String(myWin.myPDFExport.selection));
        myFile = File(File.saveDialog("Save file with preset: " + myPreset.name,"PDF files: *.pdf"));
        if(myFile != null){
            app.activeDocument.exportFile(ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE, myFile, false, myPreset);
        }else{
            alert("No File selected");
    }else{
        alert("No PDF Preset selected");
    So far my code does the following:
    1) Runs the Multi-Page PDF Import Script
    2) Runs PDF Export Script Above
    3) Toggles the Template
    4) Runs #2 Again
    5) Deletes the imported PDF and all pages and toggles template again.
    It’s close and much better than the original process which was almost 100% manual but I’d like to remove the Preset prompt from the PDF script and have it automatically select the “Smallest File Size” preset. and then if there’s a way to have it auto-fill in the file name so no user input is required at all other than selecting each file to import. (If there’s a way to setup a batch action for the multi-import script that would be even better!)
    Thanks in advance and if there’s anything else I can provide that would help please let me know! Even a nudge in the right direction will be a big help!

    If you hold down the option key, it will typically show the location. Or you can often hit option-return on the file and it will reveal the file in the Finder, instead of opening it.
    Final option is to open it, and just option-click the filename in the toolbar of Preview and it should show you the location.
    It's probably an attachment to an email you've received. If you have Mail set to cache emails and their attachments it'll be stashed in a subdirectory of ~/Library/Mail. Which is fine.

  • Indesign Exporting to PDF... Some Images Disappear

    I have searched forums and elsewhere with no luck on this issue.  I am exporting to PDF from InDesign CS 5.5 and some images are missing.  Images are linked correctly and the problem also happens when I now export older files which exported perfectly fine before.
    I have tried removing and replacing images with no success.
    Problem was not occuring before Christmas but started the day I returned from vacation on Jan. 3.  No new software has been added.
    For a few weeks I have been getting the following error when closing... have been ignoring it...  The instruction at 0x00978b83 reference memory at 0x0b159f40.  The memory could not be "read"
    Any thoughts appreciated!  Thanks.

    Well it was a long shot. Do you run Suitcase? If so, have you updated it recently? There was a problem with Suitcase and  links a month or so ago, but I don't recall if it was in PDFs. Might have been link modification dates.
    What sort of images are we talking about? Did you make the layouts, or did they come from outside? OPI comments can casue this, and files from Quark users often have them -- they are on by defualt in Q.

  • Is it possible to export to PDF without a Return character at the end of every line?

    I am the author of a book whose first edition has been typeset and extensively amended in InDesign.  I now need to rewrite the first edition to produce a second edition.
    When I copy-and-paste from the PDF with which the publisher has supplied me into MS Word, I get a Return character at the end of every line, which means that text doesn’t automatically wrap and sentences are fragmented so that I get spurious grammar errors.
    I know that not all PDF files have a Return at the end of every line.  Is it possible to restrict Returns to the end of paragraphs when exporting from InDesign to PDF?  If so, what should the publisher be asking the typesetter to do?

    Thanks for your lightning-swift and helpful replies, Mike & Ellis.
    I don't have InDesign myself, so I know hardly anything about how it's used.  I'm just trying to research what an internationally-known publisher should already know how to do, but apparently doesn't!
    Following your suggestion, Mike, I have downloaded the trial version of Acrobat and exported the PDF to a Word file.  This has been moderately successful as there are far fewer spurious Return characters, just a few that I suspect may be hangovers from the typesetter having introduced soft returns in ID.
    As you've suggested Peter and Ellis, I'll suggest that the publisher asks the typesettter to export from ID to RTF and Text to see if that's even better.

  • Format changing when IDCS3 file exported to PDF

    I am using Acrobat 8 version 8.1.2, and InDesign version 5.0.2.
    I am noticing a very specific problem when exporting some files to PDF from InDesign.
    We often have a format where we have a numbered list of right-aligned number, followed by some text, a leader line, and then another number at the end of the line. This is set up with a left indent and a first line left indent (rather than using the numbered list options, we are required to do it this way where I work), and then the necessary tabs later in the lines.
    I am finding since we switched to IDCS3, that when I export to PDF, lines containing this format change in the PDF. The text that appears after the number in the front of the line is pushed over on top of the leader line, leaving a huge white space. On rarer occasions, it will move things in lines that have no indents, but contain tabs that aren't being used.
    I have been able to get the files to export correctly by removing the left indent and first-line left indent and using tabs instead (or by removing unused tabs). But we have hundreds of files set up in this manner so going in and changing how they are all set up is problematic to say the least. Many of these are also multi-line and not using the indents means we have to manually tab lines over.
    Is this a known issue? Does anyone know why this might happen and how I can prevent it?
    I tried posting in the Acrobat forums and it was suggested since it's an export issue that I might get more help from the InDesign folks.

    Given that the file is being exported to PDF and not going via a driver route, there really is no reason why changing the default printer should make a difference whatsoever in this particular case. Changing default drivers in Microsoft Office applications, yes, but for this situation, no. And since Acrobat doesn't change formatting, the issue sounds like some problem associated with InDesign. Please report this problem directly to Adobe Tech Support and be prepared to send them sample files. Thanks!

    I have a crystal report file that is stored as image type in table (SQL Server).When i open the report file in my application (Visual Studio (C#) ), it shows the required one.But When i export to pdf  and save it to my local hard drive, and if i open that file, i find that after every lowercase 't' , letter 'i' is appended.I searched through google and found that it migh be a font issue.Even after changing the font, i was not able to resolve the issue.
    Example : 'Project'   becomes  'Projecti'
    Please provide a resolution to this issue

  • Program crashes when I try to export to pdf file using CR for VS2010

    I'm using VS2010, framework 4.0. I can view, print, and export the report to excel. When I click export, select pdf, enter a file name, and click save...I get the following message:
    Value cannot be null.
    Parameter name: window
    I added Ludek's code to limit exports to pdf and excel to my JPTreportView.xaml.vb file:
    Public Class JPTReportView
            Private Sub UserControl_Loaded(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs) Handles MyBase.Loaded
                reportViewer.ViewerCore.ReportSource = Me.DataContext.ReportSource
                reportViewer.ViewerCore.ToggleGroupTree = False
                reportViewer.ViewerCore.ToggleParameterPanel = False
                reportViewer.ViewerCore.ToggleSidePanel = False
                Dim exportFlags = (CrystalDecisions.Shared.ViewerExportFormats.PdfFormat Or CrystalDecisions.Shared.ViewerExportFormats.ExcelFormat)
                reportViewer.ViewerCore.AllowedExportFormats = exportFlags
            End Sub
        End Class

    My parameters are set in the code and are set to "Do not show" in the report. The pdf export did not work before I added the code to limit the export options. The code in JptReportView.xaml:
    <UserControl xmlns:my="clr-namespace:SAPBusinessObjects.WPF.Viewer;assembly=SAPBusinessObjects.WPF.Viewer"
                 x:Class="View.JPTReportView"

  • Report Title and Text Area issue when exported to pdf using Viewer

    Hi there,
    We are using OracleBI Discoverer Version 10.1.2.55.26
    We have reports that displays Report title containing the following
    - Report Title
    - Runt Date and Time
    - Page No
    And text area which displays 'Last Page'
    Following properties are set at the worksheet level using page setup
    Report Title --> 'Print on every Page'
    Text Area --> 'Print on last page'
    The report when exported to PDF using Discoverer plus works fine and displays report title and text area as defeined.
    But when we try to export the same report to pdf from Discoverer viewer, it displays
    - Report title on first page only.
    - text area on all pages
    All our users accesses report using discoverer viewer so we cannot open discoverer plus to them.
    Is there a solution which will enable us to export the report in pdf using discoverer viewer and displays the same output as discoverer plus.
    Please let me know... If you have any questions then please feel free to ask.
    Thanks in advance for your help...

    but when opened on other os x machines some text is colored differently than it should be
    Well, if typographic objects are colour managed, the colour appearance is dependent on the source ICC profile that describes the colourants in the typographic objects and the destination ICC profile that describes the colours the display is able to form and the RBC colourant combinations that will form those colours.
    In general, typographic objects should have special treatment, since the expectation is not that typographic objects should be colour managed, but that typographic objects should simple be set to the maximum density of dark. On a display, that is R=0 G=0 B=0 and on a seperations device (a lithographic press) that is C=0 M=0 Y=0 K=100.
    If for some reason typographic objects are colour managed, and if the ICC profiles for the displays are off by half a mile or more in relation to the actual state of the display system, then the colours will not be the same. On the other hand, if those displays are calibrated and characterized, then the colourants will be converted to form the same colours on the displays.

  • Error  while exporting in pdf in crystal report XI

    Post Author: Siddheswar
    CA Forum: General
    hi
    I am getting the following error in crystal report XI while exporting to pdf.
    The Error:
    Method 'ISCREditableRTFExportFormatOptions_reserved5' on type 'CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ReportDefModel.EditableRTFExportFormatOptionsClass' from assembly 'CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ReportDefModel, Version=11.0.3300.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692fbea5521e1304' is overriding a method that has been overridden.
    Please Help.
    Thanking in advance.
    Regards

    The stack trace is caused by whitespace in your CrystalReportViewer.jsp file.  Look up SAP Note 1199025 for the resolution.
    It's not related to the PDF formatting issue.  There's been changes to the formatting with the most recent version - Crystal Reports for Eclipse 2.0 - so if you haven't already, I recommend you upgrade.
    Note that there's differences in font metric calculation when using Adobe PDF format such that there's no way to get exact agreement between output of the CR and PDF.  But the latest version helps greatly.

    Ted Ueda

  • InDesign doesn't let embed the font while exporting to PDF

    I used a font while working on a document in InDesign and later while exporting to PDF I got a warning that the software is unable to include that font.
    Is there a way to go around it? It was a free cyrillic font and it's not possible to buy it. I suppose creating outlines is not the right way to go
    Thanks in advance

    Eugene Tyson wrote:
    … Most free fonts that I know of don't allow embedding - for this reason it's not a good idea to use a free font. …
    I'm no particular fan of so-called “free fonts” — you most often get exactly what you pay for. However, that having been said, in my years of gathering such fonts for debugging and problem solving, in fact very few of them are actually set with the protection bits to prohibit embedding. For TrueType and OpenType fonts, you can readily check outside of InDesign as to whether a font is embeddable in a PDF file. For Windows, right-click on a font file and check the properties; embedding privileges are described in one of the tabs. For MacOS, the FontBook utility can provide the same information for a font.
    The problem is that when you attempt to use a font that is physically protected against embedding, you pretty much need to follow the advice given by Eugene. Personally, I would recommend the use a different font option, checking the font prior to using it for your rights to embed it in PDF.
    Note that font licensing is legal minefield. Many fonts that are posted on-line are not really free. Some are shareware with restrictions in their written licenses that require payment for commercial use (often in ReadMe files which may somehow be “lost” when such fonts are reposted over and over again) or even pirated fonts (i.e., commercial fonts simply illegally posted on-line).
    My personal recommendation is that for any commercial use, you explicitly license your fonts from a known, reliable source to avoid possible legal issues in the future.

  • Error while exporting to PDF - Operation not yet implemented

    Hi,
        We using C# Dot Net 2005 and Crystal Report for Dot Net 2005 and we are trying to export to PDF file.  In one of the reports, we are using a Font "Shree-Kan-0850' from Shree Samhita, a SDK to build application in Indian regional languages. But we are getting an error as follows:-
    "Error in File C:\Document~1....\{....}-.rpt: Operation not yet implemented.". When we tried in various sites and forums found that it was due to some non-standard fonts. We have checked that if we remove Shree-Kan-0850 font from report, it works fine and once included the error comes. So problem might by from this font. Whether Crystal report is not supporting other than Windows standard fonts or the problem with PDF? Because with same font we can export to DOC, XLS etc. Please guide us how to solve this?
    Thanks and regards,
       Rajeev Vandakar, Bangalore.

    Unfortunately, it looks like that font has many issues. Googling 'Univers Condensed Fonts .net' gets a number of interesting posts. E.g.;
    Univers 67 Bold Condensed Font does not show in my Flash Fonts List
    See if you can select the font in the properties window of the VS.NET IDE.
    It would also be interesting to see if the following will work in a new test app:
    Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object,
    ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
         Label1.Font = New Font("Univers 57 Condensed Font – Univers 57 Condensed", 12, FontStyle.Regular)
    End Sub
