"Create Archive of" file destination

Very strange… on my computer, when I control-click a folder and choose "Create Archive of…", the resulting .zip file ends up in the same folder as the original. I've just been helping my girlfriend archive some old files, and on her computer, the .zip files are sent to the Desktop. Very confusing, and not the intended behavior. I've looked around in any preferences I could find, and even dug into some of the .plist files within applications, and could find no way to change this. Any ideas?

I don't know if this is what you are observing, but the default location where the archive is created seems to be the same folder where the original is located. However, if the person creating the archive doesn't have sufficient privileges to modify that folder, the archive ends up on their "Desktop". In this context, I suspect that it is the intended behaviour...

  • Standby creating archives log files issue!

    Hello Everyone,
    Working on oracle 10g R2/Windows, I have created a dataguard with one standby database, but there is a strange issue that happen, and I'll need someone to shed the light to me.
    By default archived log created from the primary database should be the  sent to the stanndby database, but I found that the standby database has plus one archived log file.
    From the primary database:
    SQL> archive log list;
    Database log mode Archive Mode
    Automatic archival Enabled
    Archive destination C:\local_destination1_orcl
    Oldest online log sequence 1021
    Next log sequence to archive 1023
    Current log sequence 1023
    contents of C:\local_destination1_orcl
    1_1022_623851185.ARC
    from the standby database:
    SQL> archive log list
    Database log mode Archive Mode
    Automatic archival Enabled
    Archive destination C:\local_destination1_orcl
    Oldest online log sequence 1022
    Next log sequence to archive 0
    Current log sequence 1023
    contents of C:\local_destination1_orcl
    1_1022_623851185.ARC
    1_1023_623851185.ARC ---> this is the extra archive file created in the standby database, should someone let me know how to avoid this?
    Thanks for your help

  • Can't create archive from file menu

    Hello,
    I can't create 'archive' (tar.gz) from file menu in Color (Save Archive As...).
    I don't have authorization problem on my folder project; i can create myself a tar.gz archive in the folder Archive of my Color's project.
    The system.log file said:
    Jul 16 09:45:51 fcp1 [0x0-0x1e01e].com.apple.color[215]: tar: Cowardly refusing to create an empty archive
    Jul 16 09:45:51 fcp1 [0x0-0x1e01e].com.apple.color[215]: Try `tar --help' or `tar --usage' for more information.

    some other users report difficulties, crashes, freeze-ups and very long save times associated with the Operating System and Finder. There is apparently some background file compression utility that may be interfering with your save routine. There are a couple of threads related to this issue on this forum, so a bit of searching may yield a solution.
    I haven't encountered it in nearly four years of day-to-day with three separate systems in either Tiger or Leopard. Suffice to say that if you have any third-party whiz-bang utilities running, COLOR is very vulnerable to OS corruption as it is a stripped-out race car that doesn't expect or tolerate much else when it comes to sharing the computer.

  • Removing archived log files

    Hello all,
    Using Oracle 10g R2 ( 10.2.4.0) under UNIX Sun Solaris 10 , I have two rman backup types
    1-L0 backup
    2-L1 Backup ( Incremental cummulative)
    Facts:
    -Due to space pressure on archived log destination I'm trying to get less archived files possible under the archived log fs thus at any given time the archived log files destination contains archived log files aged no more than 22hours.
    * The backup runs each day at 4PM and there is custom script that remove and compressed archived log files ( out of backup jobs windows) from midnight until 3:45PM
    * From the above removal schedule task L0 or L1 backup will always have 24 hours worth of archived log files available during the backup.
    -The Backup files Windows retention period is 22 hours meaning that each backup type L0 or L1 removes previous backup files aged more than 22hours.
    -Tracking file is enabled
    Target:
    Knowing that our backup retention windows is 22hours.
    Our next goal is to get less than 2 hours from 24 hours of archived log files available when L0 or L1 backup.
    Would this affect L1 backup? and how?
    Thank in advance for your response
    Alex

    AlexI'm not sure what you are talking about with Backup files Windows retention period ... 22 hours".
    I don't know what you mean by "Our next goal is to get less than 2 hours from 24 hours of archived log files available when L0 or L1 backup."
    If you are not taking your database backups with rman you are on shaky ground. The principles are simple. To recover your database from a failure, you will need to start with an L0 backup. The rman RESTORE command will then restore individual blocks from any applicable and available L1 backups. You would follow that with a RECOVER command, that would attempt to apply all necessary redo from available archivelogs. If the necessary archivelogs have been deleted, rman will attempt to restore them from a backup. You can use rman to backup AND DELETE archivelog files to keep the archivelog destination cleaned out.
    I take an L0 backup once a week, an L1 the other 6 days, and archivelogs twice a day. The only time I've had a problem with the archivelog dest filling up is when some buggy code that has a loop goes into production and starts flooding redo.
    Exactly how are you taking your database backups? If you are not using rman, then you are already on shaky ground.

  • Reasons for multiplexing archive log files

    hi
    I would like to try multiplexing the archive log files, but I need to explain it to my boss who is the unofficial DBA. I want to tell her that it is necessary. Are there are really convincing, compelling reasons that one would set up more than 1 archive log file destination?
    Cheers.
    DA

    Archives are the thing that protect your data. If you have only one source for them, let's just keep our fingers crossed that nothing ever goes wrong with that source at the same time as something going wrong with the database, for then you will have lost data irrecoverably. So how much data loss is acceptable?
    On the other hand, if your original archive destination uses mirrored disks and if it is backed up regularly to tape, and if daily checks that that backup has taken place successfully are made... there's an at least reasonable case to be made not to bother multiplexing the archives: you already have redundancy in depth and the additional archiving destination could well slow down the whole archiving subsystem... and that can translate into problems for LGWR and hence foreground waits suffered by users.
    Nevertheless, it is true that assuming you back up your archives nightly, there is always going to be a days'-worth of archives which haven't been backed up yet. Should anything nasty happen to those, you will not be in a completely recoverable position ...and I have seen both parts of a mirrored drive die at about the same time, so that's no guarantee!
    If you or your colleague don't mind losing a day's work or if you are betting people and don't mind taking a punt on hardware not failing, then not multiplexing archives is a fair judgement call to make. But if you cannot afford any data loss at all and you want to make sure that it's as guaranteed as you can get that you won't, then multiplexing archives is pretty essential.

  • Adding a file to an already created Archive throws error

    Hello Experts,
    In one of the WLST python scripts, we had a piece of code which was adding a file to an already created archive. Below is the code snippet:
    import zipfile
    try:
    conn='1.properties'
    fileName='/home/pbnagara/temp/Zip1.par'
    myZip = zipfile.ZipFile(fileName, mode='a')
    myZip.write(conn)
    myZip.close()
    except Exception:
    print 'Exception occurred while writing to Zip file: ' + fileName
    --> it makes use of the standard python module [zipfile] to add a file to the archive.
    This code has started failing [for some strange unknown reason] when we upgraded.
    The same script works fine in a standalone mode[using the system's default python packages] but fails only when run within WLST.
    Does WLST package a different set of zipfile libraries? Can anyone point out what might be going wrong here?

    I did get a reply from someone on the jfreechart forum, but need to ask more questions. This was his reply:
    Hi Allyson,
    You are trying to add a (subclass of) JFrame to a JPanel...that won't work, of course, and Java tells you so.
    You need to create a ChartPanel to display your chart. This is a subclass of JComponent, which you can happily add to a JPanel (or any other container).
    Regards,
    Dave Gilbert
    Here is the code for the method:
    private void LineChartFrame() {
    double[][] data = new double[][] {
    { 1.0, 4.0, 3.0, 5.0, 5.0, 7.0, 7.0, 8.0 },
    { 5.0, 7.0, 6.0, 8.0, 4.0, 4.0, 2.0, 1.0 },
    { 4.0, 3.0, 2.0, 3.0, 6.0, 3.0, 4.0, 3.0 }
    DefaultCategoryDataset dataset = new DefaultCategoryDataset(data);
    // set the series names...
    String[] seriesNames = new String[] { "First", "Second", "Third" };
    dataset.setSeriesNames(seriesNames);
    // set the category names...
    String[] categories = new String[] { "Type 1", "Type 2", "Type 3", "Type 4", "Type 5", "Type 6", "Type 7", "Type 8" };
    dataset.setCategories(categories);
    // create the chart...
    chart = ChartFactory.createLineChart(
    "Line Chart Demo 1", // chart title
    "Category", // domain axis label
    "Value", // range axis label
    dataset, // data
    true, // include legend
    true, // tooltips
    false); // urls
    chartPanel = new ChartPanel(chart);
    chartPanel.setPreferredSize(new java.awt.Dimension(500, 270));
    setContentPane(chartPanel);
    }And I tried this to add it to my panel:
    jPanel1.add(chartPanel, null);But I get this error:
    java.lang.NullPointerException
    ChartPanel is defined globally in this file.
    jPanel1 is my main panel that I want to add the chart to.
    I am putting my last duke dollar on this in the hopes that someone can help. Thanks.

  • Create Archive, how to change the behavior of the default file naming?

    From an earlier post on archiving via the contextual menu in the Mac OS X Finder:
    "If you archive a single item, the archived file has the name of the original item with a ".zip" extension. If you archive multiple items at once, the archived file is called Archive.zip."
    Is there a way to change the behavior of this?
    I ask because I want to archive a single file, say "photo.psd" and when I do I get an archive called "photo.psd.zip" - is there a way to create an archive from the contextual menu and have the original file extension be appended? - in this case I would want "photo.zip" to be the end result.
    Also, is there a way to change the behavior of archiving multiple files? To, say, create a differently named file afterwards instead of the default "Archive.zip" - perhaps something a little more descriptive but standard, like "YourFilesCompressed.zip" - something that would stay the same across each archive creation.
    Thanks, I've been manually renaming after all create-archive's. And I do realize other applications could probably do this, but I'm thinking there must be a way to do this in the finder, no? A terminal command? Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Try looking at the documentation for the ditto and zip Terminal commands.

  • Error while reading raw file created in previous task using raw file destination

    I am reading a flat file and creating an raw file using raw file destination.  path of the raw file is in a variable.  now I am reading the raw file using the rawfile source component. I am able to execute if the .raw file is available.  But
    when we deploy into the production the .raw will be created runtime, so the package is getting failed while evualting the variable which hold the path of the variable.  since the .raw is not available i am not able to proceed further. it's in ssis 2008
    r2
    Error at Load Data [Raw File Source [401]]: File "c:\test123.raw" cannot be opened for reading. Error may occur when there are no privileges or the file is not found. Exact cause is reported in previous error message.

    Error at Load Data : There were errors during task validation.

    I am also using a raw file destination using a variable.
    I have set DelayValidation = true on both the DataFlow task and even the Sequence Container.
    I get the same error when I run the entire ssis package, however
    when I run the individual container or individual task it runs without an error.
    Also, something interesting is the error is not the same path as the variable name.
    Warning: The system cannot find the file specified.
    Error: File "C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Local\Temp\GUIDNumber\\RawFileName" cannot be opened for reading. Error may occur when there are no privileges or the file is not found. Exact cause is reported in previous error message.
    The variable is "C:\Temp\ProjectName\RawFileName"
    I have other RawFile sources in this same project, but only this one file is giving me grief.
    Any other suggestions?  Is this a bug?
    Have you set an expression for connection string property of raw file? Is it based on variable/expression or configuration? If yes, check the value of variable/ expression or configuraton item at runtime by putting a breakpoint in the pre execute event of task
    and make sure path value its getting is correct. It may be that path is getting a different value at runtime due to expression/configuration set for it.

  • How to script File Menu "Create Archive of..."

    I have been trying to script the File Menu's "Create Archive" command but i can't figure out how to add the quote characters around the items name when only one item is selected for archiving. I have tried the escape character but applescript errors on it. I can get it to work if I use menu item number, but that varies by system.
    here is what I have so far.
    try
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    select item "PicaX4:BackUp:"
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
    tell process "Finder"
    -- create archive
    click menu item "Create Archive of \"BackUp\" " of menu 1 of menu bar item "File" of menu bar 1
    end tell
    end tell
    on error errMsg
    end try
    on a related topic, how do I wait for the completion of the archive process so I can then do something with the zip file?
    any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    thank you, greg

    Since 'Create archive' basically creates a .zip file, it would be far easier to use a shell script to do this:
    do shell script "/usr/bin/zip -r /Volumes/PicaX4/BackUp.zip /Volumes/PicaX4/BackUp"
    If you still want to take the UI approach you should note that the menu item uses 'smart' quotes “and” and not the regular quotes.

    When you attempt to startup the cloned database on the new server you will find that it needs recovery -- because it was taken in hot backup mode.
    That is why you need to copy the archivelogs that are generated from the first archivelog after the first "alter tablespace begin backup" to the first archivelog after the last "alter tablespace end backup".
    I see that you are also including a CREATE CONTROLFILE script.
    You would run that at the cloned environment.
    Then you would issue the RECOVER DATABASE USING BACKUP CONTROLFILE UNTIL CANCEL command to make the clone consistent.
    You can, of course, use the same method to copy these archivelogs as you use to copy database files -- tar, cpio, tape, etc.

  • Why isn't Create Archive working for dv file?

    I have a 9GB dv file that I like to archive. I highlight the file and "create archive". A .zip file is created immediately, but when I check the file, it is zero byte length. I tried with another file which is a small .pdf file, a valid zip file was created for me. Looks like I did the right thing, but the software didn't. I used Apple help, it suggests checking permission. I have read write permission on the file and its containing folder.
    Any suggestion? Can a .dv file file achived in the first place?

    It turns out not the file size. I later found out that the archive does not start until like 5 minutes after the empty zip file is created. It estimates that the 9GB will take 22 hours to compress. I guess the 5 minutes delayed response is also due the slow CPU of my old G5 iMac.
    Thanks anyway.

  • Corrupt (?) zipped files from "Create Archive"

    I am repeatedly having trouble with files I zip using "create archive." Whether it's fonts or images, the recipients are not able to use the files I send (they seem to uncompress, but aren't readable). This is happening often enough that I wonder if there is a problem with the software. I didn't find this question asked when I did a search.
    thanks!

    Hi, casperr. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. Are the recipients using Windows? If so, you may want to purchase a copy of StuffIt Deluxe, which can create archives that are both Windows-friendly and self-extracting.
    2. Have you tried opening the archives you have created with Create Archive to see if the contents of the archive you've created are AOK before sending them? That will help you determine if the problem is on your Mac, with the transmission, or a problem on the other user's computer.
    3. You might want to enquire as to how the recipients are unzipping the archives you have sent that they are finding problematic.
    Good luck!

  • "recover database until cancel" asks for archive log file that do not exist

    Hello,
    Oracle Release : Oracle 10.2.0.2.0
    Last week we performed, a restore and then an Oracle recovery using the recover database until cancel command. (we didn't use backup control files) .It worked fine and we able to restart the SAP instances. However, I still have questions about Oracle behaviour using this command.
    First we restored, an online backup.
    We tried to restart the database, but got ORA-01113,ORA-01110 errors :
    sr3usr.data1 needed media recovery.
    Then we performed the recovery :
    According Oracel documentation, "recover database until cancel recovery" proceeds by prompting you with the suggested filenames of archived redo log files.
    The probleme is it  prompts for archive log file that do not exist.
    As you can see below, it asked for SMAarch1_10420_610186861.dbf that has never been created. Therefore, I cancelled manually the recovery, and restarted the database. We never got the message "media recovery complete"

    Frod.

    Hi,
    Let me answer your query.
    =======================
    Your question: While performing the recovery, is it possible to locate which online redolog is needed, and then to apply the changes in these logs
    1.   When you have current controlfile and need complete data (no data loss),
          then do not go for until cancel recovery.
    2.   Oracle will apply all the redologs (including current redolog) while recovery
         process is    on.
    3.  During the recovery you need to have all the redologs which are listed in the    view    V$RECOVERY_LOG and all the unarchived and current redolog. By querying  V$RECOVERY_LOG  you    can find out about the redologs required.
    4. If the required sequence is not there in the archive destination, and if recovery process    asks for that sequence you can query V$LOG to see whether requested sequence is part of the    online redologs. If yes you can mention the path of the online redolog to complete the recovery.
    Hope this information helps.
