Please help.
My guess is that you did not run fdisk and partition off the first 1M and ASM overwrote the VTOC rendering the device useless.
fdisk
create new partition
primary partition 1
start 2 end <last cylinder>
Then point your disk string to these partitions (<diskname>p1?)
Once this is done, I ALWAYS test to make sure the oracle AND grid user can read and write to this device from ALL nodes. I use the dd command to do this.
DO NOT DO THIS ON AN ALREADY CONFIGURED AND FUNCTIONING ASM DEVICE. Doing so will erase the device.
make a file in $HOME that contains one line:
cat <<EOF >> $HOME/x.x
this is a test
EOF
node1
dd if=$HOME/x.x of=<disk???p1> bs=20 count=1
node2
dd if=<disk???p1> of=$HOME/y.y bs=20 count=1 ##y.y should be the contents of node1:x.x
node1
dd if=/dev/zero of=<disk???p1> bs=8192 count=1000 ## erase the device for ASM usage.
Fix any read/write issues before proceeding.

We changed /dev/oracleasm/disks to 777 in order to test but we got the same result. Do we need to adjust the permissions to all of the parent directories in the path (/dev/oracleasm/disks)? I've been looking around for anything related to permissions on /dev/oracleasm but the docs don't mention anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. From what I understand, you should not set device permissions of /dev/oracleasm since oracleasm takes care of it according to /etc/init.d/oracleasm configure.
The problem in your case seems to be that ASM refuses to initialize and write metadata to your device. Was the device previously used by ASM? ASM will fail to initialize a device that contains previous ASM metadata. To erase the device you will need to use the dd command, e.g. dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb. Both ASMLib and raw devices require the candidate disks to be partitioned before they can be accessed. To create a partition on /dev/sdb, for instance, type fdisk /dev/sdb and create a standard partition using the defaults. This will create /dev/sdb1 and you can try oracleasm createdisk again.
You may try the above, but anyway, I was not sure how much you can trust your installation. The problem could also be that you installed the oracleasm kernel driver and asmlib software for OEL 5. Oracle Linux 6 includes an oracleasm kernel driver and as far as I remember you must not install another oracleasm kernel driver. Using modprob oracleasm and installing oracleasm support package using yum should do the trick. You may also need to download and install the asmlib package for the Oracle ASM grid install to see the ASM disks. -
Problem with create asm disk group
Hi all
I am about configuring ASM, so I have downloaded the Grid infrastructure 11g (32 bit), I have configured and created parameters and directories.
I runned the installer but get stack at the 3 step where I have to change the discovery path. I have taped as path /dev where I have created 3 partitions sdb1, sdc1 and sdd1.
Is there any thing should I perform on partitions may be or parameters to set before I go through the installation?
Thanks for helpYou can use the below link to install ASMLIB:

There are two different methods to configure ASM on Linux:
ASM with ASMLib I/O: This method creates all Oracle database files on raw block devices managed by ASM using ASMLib calls. RAW devices are not required with this method as ASMLib works with block devices.
ASM with Standard Linux I/O: This method creates all Oracle database files on raw character devices managed by ASM using standard Linux I/O system calls. You will be required to create RAW devices for all disk partitions used by ASM.

Create ASM Disk Groups cannot see Disk Path to select during installation
Hello Guys,
I am setting up 2 node RAC on 11gR2 and Linux.
I have configured all the pre-installation steps that are required to run Grid Setup as per my understanding.
I have configure SAN partitions using multipath.
I can see my SAN volume when i query multipath -l
Then i configured the raw partitions by oracleasm. Configured and then created mount points:
/dev/oracleasm/disks/
CRSVOL1 DATAVOL1 FRAVOL1
Later on I created the disks using oracle asm command:
/usr/sbin/oracleasm createdisk CRSVOL1 /dev/mapper/racdbp1 and so on...
I have run /usr/sbin/oracleasm scandisks
Cleaning any stale ASM disks...
Scanning system for ASM disks...
And when i list disk with command /usr/sbin/oracleasm listdisks
it shows the disk like this on both nodes:
CRSVOL1
DATAVOL1
FRAVOL1
BUT during the installation screen when it comes to create ASM Disk Groups It shows nothing in the add disk frame, I cant select the volumes I can list, like i did above.
Any hint please?
Thanks, ImranThanks but my problem is very specific. I feel that i have performed all the necessary steps to get complete the step i discussed above. As per different commands all is set. But i am unable to see Disks and Disks Paths during the installation screen. This is another output to verify if the installe user have rights on the asm devices:

Please Help to Get ASM Library Files to Create ASM Disks
Folks,
Hello. My Operating System is Oracle Linux 5.6. I need to install ASMLib software to create ASM disks.
We can download ASMLib from OTN whose URL is: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/linux/index-101839.html
I don't have a CSI and cannot download ASMLib from the above URL. Thus, I download ASMLib from this URL:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/asmlib/files/latest/download
The file name from Sourceforge is asmlib-0.9.59.tar.gz. After tar zxf asmlib-0.9.59.tar.gz, I cannot find the 3 files needed for my Oracle Linux 5.6. These 3 files are :
oracleasm-2.6.18-238.el5debug-2.0.5-1.el5.rpm
oracleasm-2.6.18-238.el5-2.0.5-1.el5.rpm
oracleasm-support-2.1.4-1.el5.rpm
Can any folk help to get the above 3 files needed for my Oracle Linux 5.6 ?
Can any folk provide a website to download the right version of ASMLib including the 3 files for Oracle Linux 5.6 ?
Thanks.Folk,
Hello. Thanks for help.
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/linux/downloads/rhel5-084877.html
I download the following 5 files from the link above:
AMD64 / Intel em64t Architecture
Drivers for kernel 2.6.18-238.el5:
oracleasm-support-2.1.7-1.el5.x86_64.rpm
oracleasm-2.6.18-238.el5xen-2.0.5-1.el5.x86_64.rpm
oracleasm-2.6.18-238.el5debug-2.0.5-1.el5.x86_64.rpm
oracleasm-2.6.18-238.el5-debuginfo-2.0.5-1.el5.x86_64.rpm
oracleasm-2.6.18-238.el5-2.0.5-1.el5.x86_64.rpm
My VM's OS is Oracle Linux 5.6 that is assumed to be the same with Red Hat Linux Server 5.
I have installed the 2 files (below) successfully using the command: [root@rac1 \ ]# rpm -Uvh
oracleasm-2.6.18-238.el5-2.0.5-1.el5.x86_64.rpm
oracleasm-support-2.1.7-1.el5.x86_64.rpm
When installed the other 3 files, it cannot install and return the same error message: "2.6.18-238.el5 is needed."
After installed the above 2 files, I run the command: [root@rac1 dev]# oracleasm configure -i
But it returns the meesage:" Command not found." Thus, I cannot initialize oracleasm program.
My questions are:
First, why the command " oracleasm configure -i " is still not found ? How to solve the issue ?
Second, are the other 3 files really needed to be installed ?
Thanks. -
Can not find disks when creating ASM disk group (11.0.2.3 on OEL 6)
Hi
I`m trying to install 11.0.2.3 Grid on OEL6.
Every thing is fine until it prompt to ask where I want to put OCR and VOTING DISK. I choose to put them in ASM. So it prompt another window to ask create ASM DISK GROUP.
In this window there was an area called "add disk". There suppose to be some disks listed in this area to chose. But in my case, nothing here. I can not chose disks to add to ASM DISK GROUP.
Below are descriptions of my installation.
Oracle Grid 11.0.2.3
OEL 6 as the platform.
I use two nodes mounting the same NFS. I created some zero-padded files on the NFS directory as the ASM DISKS. (This disks should be showing the the area above)
I install everything using only one account oracle. The group is oinstall and dba
Edited by: Kramer on Jun 5, 2013 8:52 PMWell as i see your asm_diskstring could be the problem. ASMlib would have been there isnt it , I would want you to stick to default value and then try also I would suggest you to once post the output of the following and lets see whats happening
[root@ora ~]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm scandisks
[root@ora ~]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks

Local Domain Index query fails with ora-01410: invalid rowid
Hello!
I have a task to implement partitioned domain index for range partitioned table.
As I understood from reference http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/appdev.111/b28425/dom_idx.htm
the main difference is to provide support for partitioning operations by
implementing corresponding ODCI interface functions.
For the first I decided to create something simple to not spend time on system partitioned
index storage table. My problem is that domain index works correctly when it's created without
support for partitioning and produces "*ORA-01410: INVALID ROWID*" when it's created
with LOCAL option.
Test query:
SELECT /* +index(from_sample_index) */ * FROM index_in_partitioned_tbl WHERE position_between(card_no) < 50 ORDER BY card_no DESC;
Index creared in this way returns 3 rows:
CREATE INDEX from_sample_index ON index_in_partitioned_tbl (card_no) INDEXTYPE IS position_indextype;
When index has been creared with LOCAL option I got "ORA-01410: INVALID ROWID" :
CREATE INDEX from_sample_index ON index_in_partitioned_tbl (card_no) INDEXTYPE IS position_indextype LOCAL;
I don't post implementation's source code to reduce amount of text in post. It works for global index.
If I copy rowid from index storage table and then put it into something like
SELECT card_no FROM index_in_partitioned_tbl WHERE rowid = 'AAAXHGAAEAAAFERAAh';
then it will be executed successfully without any errors.
I suppose the error could be somehow linked with "alter index" calls that Oracle makes when local domain index is created.
The calls are made with option "AlterIndexRebuild" - possibly they mark index as invalid (though it's shown as valid in SQL Developer)Solved :)
when index is LOCAL calls for ODCIINDEXSTART - ODCIINDEXFETCH - ODCIINDEXCLOSE are executed for each partition of base table.
In my case ODCIINDEXFETCH returns row_id's regardless of partition that are currently scanned for values. So first call returned rowid values for all partitions not only for the first partition and validation failed with "ora-01410: invalid rowid" -

Oem 12.1.0.3 installer fails with ora-01017
Greetings,
I am attempting to upgrade my OEM 12.1.0.1 installation to 12.1.0.3. I am following the instructions in the Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control Upgrade Guide and Oracle Support Note 1568143.1. I have verified that all prerequisites are met and have installed patch 11061801 to the repository. The repository and OMS are on different machines. The 12.1.0.1 installation is able to connect to the repository, it has been running successfully for some time now. On the OMS server I stopped the OMS and the Agent and I invoke the 12.1.0.3 installer. I follow the steps and when it gets to the connection page it fails with ORA-01017. The messages are shown -
1. Verify if the SYS password you entered is valid.
2. Verify if the database initialization parameter REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE is set to either Shared or Exclusive.
3. Verify if a password file with the file name orapw<SID> exists in the <ORACLE_HOME>/dbs directory.
All conditions are met:
-bash-3.2$ echo $ORACLE_SID
oemrepos
SQL> connect sys as sysdba
Enter password:
Connected.
SQL> connect sysman
Enter password:
Connected.
SQL> show parameter remote_login_passwordfile
NAME TYPE VALUE
remote_login_passwordfile string EXCLUSIVE
-bash-3.2$ ls -l $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/orapwoemrepos
-rw-r----- 1 oracle dba 1536 Jan 30 2013 /usr/local/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/dbs/orapwoemrepos
I am able to connect remotely from another machine. sqlplus is not installed on the OMS server.
I am completely stumped and in need of assistance. Searching the web only indicates that I need to insure that the above listed conditions should be met, they are. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate the help.
Thank you.
Bill WagmanOn repository server , can you login as sys user ?
Try to connect through listener and share the result.

All scheduled jobs started suddenly to fail with ORA-01031: insufficient pr
I have a setup of gridcontrol 11g on windows 2008. I've been running successful for weeks until the other day when all my scheduled jobs started to fail with
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges (rman jobs)
ERROR: Invalid username and/or password (sql scripts).
I verified for the accounts being locked, pw correct, expired / grace period, etc.
all good when I try from the command line. running an rman backup from the command line works great, but the same one through the job scheduler fails with ORA-01031.
I've dropped the jobs completely, recreated them again. same thing.
I'm using preferred credentials and dropped and recreated them. same thing.
I don't know where else to look. Only grid control scheduled jobs fail, but all of them do.
I'm using SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS) in my sql.ne (always have).
we use a windows domain server / domain authentication for logging into boxes. I haven't changed any of my passwords.
I am probably looking in the wrong places. Anybody able to help?Hi,
ERROR: Invalid username and/or password (sql scripts). This error message clearly tells that password is incorrect and "insufficient privileges" shows that perhaps you are using SYS user for running the jobs and password for user SYS is incorrect.
If you are specifying passwords in your scripts, i don't think you need to set preferred credentials.
Try following
1) Remove preferred credentials
2) Don't check password of user sys by locally logging in (because if Os authentication is on, even wrong password will allow you loging into the database and you will think that password is correct). Try connecting database using SYS user from a remote machine and check whether it accepts your password and make sure you have same password for your jobs and in sql scripts
3) If still problem, just for test, remove SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS) and try
