Create Firewire install of Tiger...

Hey there,
I want to create an installation of Tiger on a firewire hard drive. I've already cloned the disc image to a partition on my hard drive, but when ever it reaches the "blue screen" it shuts down. I am guessing that it figured out that it's not a CD/DVD and kicks me off. I was wondering if anyone has a tip for me. Thanks!
  Mac OS X (10.4.3)

To avoid scratching disks, keep them inside jewelcases, and handle them by the edges and the finger inside the inner ring with dry clean hands. Don't lay the disk on any rough and/or unclean surface.
You can't use a copy of Tiger on more than one computer at a time (except for a backup), unless you buy a family license. I suggest reading your license agreement.
If you need an emergency boot disk with utilities to test other drives from, there are several cloning software like Superduper, Silverkeeper, Disk Utility, Dantz/EMC Retrospect and Carbon Copy Cloner. You can find them on http://www.versiontracker.com/ Only Firewire drives are known to be able to boot Mac OS X. That means the newest iPods which rely on USB can't be used.
Be sure to use a version which has been tested with the operating system you are cloning.

  • Install failure: Tiger & Panther & Jaguar

I have 400 MHz Power Book with 384 MB of memory & a 10GB drive. (CPU Type: PowerPC 750(42.2)) It was running under OSX 10.3.9 successfully when it started to slow up terribly. So I decided to clean it out and try to upgrade to Tiger. Backed-up the hard drive and did an erase-&-install of Tiger. I'd get an "Installation was unsuccessful. Please re-install message." And again. And again. So I tried to erase-&-install Panther. Same message. Tried one or twice again, this time not erasing, but accepting the default "Upgrade" option. Finally it worked, it seemed. Tried to update to 10.3.9. Disk image failed to open, so I opened it on my desktop machine and network-transferred the update install file to the laptop to install. That seemed to work, but some apps refused to open; iTunes, Mail, . . . Tried to install Jaguar; same failure message. Kept trying till it seemed to succeed. Update to 10.2.8 failed. . . . Tried various other things, including DiskWarrior, TechTool, AppleJack, PowerBook hardware test disk. No problems found.
I've currently got it running under 10.3. (There are a bunch of files and folders with (Mac OS 9) as part of their names. These, plus an AppleJack dmg and a ComboUpdate 10.3.9 --all under the root directory-- seem to be left over from an earlier install, even through at least one erase-&-install.)
Oh, yes. The battery has been dead for a long time. If that matters.
    Any good ideas, anyone?

If you do an Erase and Install then there cannot be anything "leftover" from a previous installation.
Is this a Pismo or later model or a Lombard? Lombard's cannot run Tiger. Tiger requires a computer with built-in Firewire and USB ports.
I suggest you may want to do an extended hard drive format:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with the OS X installation.
A dead battery should not be a problem as long as you have the AC adapter connected for power. However, none of the settings normally preserved in PRAM will be saved whenever AC power is removed or the computer is shut down. This could lead to odd behavior because the date and time, display information, selected boot volume, etc. are stored in PRAM.

  • Clean install of Tiger on new HD. Clone? or what....

is the best thing to do. I have just bought a spiffing new Hitachi 7200 HD for my PB and am torn between creating a clone using Drive Genius and copying it back or should I just copy my Home folder to the clean instalation of Tiger. Of course I would need to reinstall all my progs.
If some can point me in the right direction I would be gratefull.
I have also bought a HD enclosure USB 2 for the old 5400 original drive.

I hope you are aware that you cannot boot the computer with a USB drive. If you planned to clone to the USB drive, then boot from it, you will not be able to do so. USB drives cannot boot OS X. You will need a Firewire drive instead. Best swap that USB case for a Firewire case.
If I were you I would clone your existing system to an external Firewire drive. I would then boot from the Firewire drive and upgrade to Tiger. If all works well and you have no problems arise, then you can decide whether to install Tiger cleanly on the internal hard drive or to clone back from the external drive.
If you choose the above then before creating the initial clone you must do the following:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.0.6 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Do not clone unless your hard drive is verified as OK.
Next prep the new external hard drive as follows:
    1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Last, perform the clone using Disk Utility:
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder unless it's already open.
    2. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
    5. Select the backup volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Test the clone by opening Startup Disk and setting the external drive as the startup disk. Click on Restart.

  • Help Installing OSX Tiger on iMac G4, seems HD Volume Structure corrupted

I need help Installing OSX Tiger on an iMac G4 800MHz 17" Flat Screen LCD, 80 GB Hard Drive, 256MB RAM, DVD-R/CD-RW Super Drive, model# M8812LL/A. I have a Tiger install DVD and i put it in the drive and everything is fine....I go through the steps and when it gets to "Preparing the Disk" - "Verifying destination volume"....it just sits and nothing happens. It will go on for 20+ minutes or so and then the installer will quit saying there was errors during the update. Anyone got any idea what is happening? I'm running OSX 10.3 Panther currently. I just tried running Disk Utility using the install DVD.....it attempted three times and couldn't repair --- I then went out and purhased DiskWarrior --- I boot from that disk, it begins to run; then as it is repairing the volume it freezes and stays frozen for hours. I've rebooted and tried it numerous times with no luck. Is the HD no good? Should I just do a complete reinstall of Tiger and erase everything? I'd rather not, but I backed everthing up in case I need to. Also, when I ran TechTool Deluxe from the booted CD, it said the Volume Structure was corrupted. My Tiger disc is a retail full install disc that I purchased.
    Thanks for your help!!!

Use Disk Utility to Restore to a FW drive.
Use one of your FW drives, and create a 24GB partition - later you can reuse this for your emergency boot drive). Restore the DVD to FW volume. Boot from there to install with - very fast.
Low level format is what you probably want/need and the only way to do that is ERASE with the option to ZERO-ALL (after you backup any files you don't now have on disk or DVD.... and where are the backups?).
When you install it will also verify the DVD install disk itself.
Have you tried using FSCK from the command line? Or do you no longer have a valid system on the boot drive? Nothing to lose it seems at this point from trying. Just hold down COMMAND + S on startup. At the prompt, follow direction to type:
    /sbin/fsck -fy

  • Networking problem after a zone is created and installed

    Hi all,
I've got a networking problem after a zone was created and installed on a Solaris 10 box. The box was configured with two NICs, one (e1000g0) with a public IP address, the other one (e1000g1) with a private IP address and connected to a local switch. All worked fine so far.
Then I created a local zone with shared networking (e1000g1). The zone has a private IP address which is in the same subnet as e1000g1 on the global zone. After some time, I noticed that I could not access (ssh, ping) the global zone. Then after some time, the global zone became available. The problem happened quite frequently.
Also I observed that: 1) When the global zone was unavailable from outside, it was available (ssh, ping) from another box within the same subnet (e1000g0); 2) If I shutdown e1000g1, the problem was gone.
Any idea what caused this problem?
    Many thanks,
    Xiaobo

    It was a route problem.

  • How to create an Installed base from the sales order

    Dear Friends,
could any one let me know the process of creating an Installed base with the below process.
Once a sales order is created in SD, an istalled base need to be created in CRM system with reference to sales order.
There are around 50 final products and approximately 2000(BOM)components for each product exists. but the client wants to maintain only few components
like 100 to 200 components in Installed base.
In CRM system, can we maintain Installed base Template with that 100 or 200 components. If yes, how do we assign the Individual objects(Serial numbers) to each component.
    Regards,
    Ven

    Hi Ajay
    there can be two possibilities
Option 1. Create Install base in CRM while creating Sales order in ECC using RFC CRM_IBASE_CREATE. Make some reference  of sales order in the Ibase. later when you move equipments to CRM then you can attach these equipments to Ibase (Already created in Thru RFC)in Badi CRM_EQUI_LOAD(This BAdi is called while moving equipments from ECC to CRM).
Option 2. Don't create Ibase at the creation of Sales order. but while creating Equipment just add some indiacator in the equipment to know which sale sorder this equipments belongs.
and once these equipments moves to CRM. Using the BADI CRM_EQUI_LOAD you can club all the equipments(of same sales order) under one ibase.

  • How do I do a Clean install of Tiger and Classic?

My G4 came with Jaguar. OS 9 was part of the complete installation, that you could install or choose not to install. My computer has been having a lot of issues lately and I think that a clean install would be a good idea, especially, since I used an upgrade to install Panther and then installed Tiger on top of Panther. I want to install classic and Tiger. How do I do this properly? Thanks

I plan to back up my personal files and any
    downloaded software I have.
Amazing that. You've told us that numerous times, but
you've failed to provide us with information on
HOW you're going to do this. That is, please
explain WHAT you're using for the backup and
WHERE you're planning on using to store the
    backup.
All Power Macs come with the capability of burning CD's today. Mine can also burn DVD's, so backing up MY files is NOT a problem. I just can't clone my whole drive. Now, I'm not sure how this is pertinent in answering my question about how to properly do a clean install of Tiger and be able to install Classic. My son however, just told me he thinks that all I need to do is to clean-install Tiger. Then, insert the installation CD with classic on it that came with my computer. Find the invisible file, which is a disk image and drag the contents of the disk image to my computer. If anyone can tell me if this is correct, I would appreciate it.

  • Install old iLife from 10.3 disks onto iBook w/ a clean install of Tiger?

My ibook originally came with Panther 10.3. iLife was included on the install disks.
A few months ago, I did a clean install of Tiger. I then tried to reinstall iLife from the Panther 10.3 disks. However, only Garageband and iDVD show up ---iPhoto and iMovie don't show up at all. I've searched for these programs, but they are not installed.
I spoke to an apple rep and he said that I should NEVER install old programs from a Panther disk onto a clean install of Tiger. However, the guy did not seem confident in what he told me. He said my mac should be very unstable and that I shouldn't even be able to use Garageband....but I have had no problems with my mac or using Garageband for the past 4 months.
Is he correct? And if so, should I do a clean install of Panther, and then upgrade to Tiger? I wonder if this will correctly install the whole iLife suite?

please any one help me about this,i am not getting any idea about this..

I doubt you can. Those browser toolbars are done by implementing to an API provided by the browser. That API, I don't believe, is provided via Java. But of course, that would be entirely up to the browser, not Java.

  • IPhone not in iTunes after Re-install of Tiger

I had to dump Leopard because it was causing all kinds of problems on my Mac Pro. I'm starting all over with a new install of Tiger 10.4.10. You cannot believe how angry I am at Apple over this force to backtrack to Tiger.
BTAIM, I'm now re-registering all of my applications and assumed my iPhone would be recognized by iTunes when I plugged it in to the dock. Its not, naturally, so now how do I get it to show up so I can add music, movies, etc.
Again, you cannot believe how angry I am with Apple over the poor quality of Leopard.

Actually I had to reinstall iTunes and the iPhone is now recognized. I've lost everything associated with it - music, videos, contacts, notes, etc., but I didn't have to reactivate it. Account user information is probably held on the AT&T server but my iPhone personal information (pix, contacts) are still on the iPhone but I dare not turn on the syncing of individual tabs until I can get that information off the iPhone and back into iTunes.
Since the reinstall of Tiger I've had no problems with the OS at all. The upgrade to Leopard cost me an awful lot of valuable data - data I was unable to get off the main hard drive and save without the system freezing and having to start over each time. Everything from the Documents, pictures, movies, music folders were erased but the applications and their settings are all there. What aren't there are the registration codes and each time I run a third party applications I'm asked to insert those codes and register before the app can be used. Most I have in email (retained on the server) but many early or older registrations are lost and I'm forced to re-buy.
That's the price you pay for believing in Apple's ridiculous claims that their new OS is ready for prime time. I'll wait until it is 10.5.9 before I give it another try, if I do at all.

  • Create an install CD for SAP GUI Windows Patch Level 4

    Hello,
I would like to create an Install CD for SAP GUI 720 for Windows with Patch Level 4
so that my user just install once.
From the market place, I can download Patch Level 0 distribution.
It is a Zip file that I can extract and use to generate an Install CD.
But it is LVL 0 only,
Then, I can download the Patch 4 executable file.
Unfortunately, the only way I can go to patch 4 is to execute this new program on my installed GUI.
Is there a way to generate, or even better download, an install  CD that would contains the PL4?
so that the user just does one install and does not have to run the patch executable after the install.
If yes, how can I do it?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    > No my idea was to generate a CD with PL 4 now.
You can do that using an installation server, you can create a single .EXE file and burn in to a CD for the user.
    > We test it and stand to it for a long time.
We tried to do that in the last 15 years we're doing SAP, unfortunately there come always situations, where you don't get around installing patches on PCs. This is especially true for BW, where the tools used depend (more or less) to the patchlevel of the backend system.  However,
    > Would someone know where I could get the release date of these compilation CD fro 720 Windows GUI?
The patch dates/weeks are listed in "Note 1053737 - Expected release dates for SAP GUI for Windows & ITS Patches", however, they are estimates.
I would assume that the next compilation will be released with Business Suite 7i2010 (or whatever name it is actually). Those compilation CDs are neverless always at least one patch behind the actual one.

  • Installing OS tiger vs jaguar

I have a bit of an odd question. My iBook G3 dual usb had a massive hard drive failure. I am needing a new hard drive. Once it's installed, is there a reason I can't install OS Tiger on it with a clean retail version? This OS says it requires a DVD to install, as does Panther, and my iBook only has a cd drive in it. If I can't install Tiger, I will need a copy of Jaguar.
If Jaguar is the OS to install, anyone know where I might find one?

    Hi Again PFMbyNight!
I also responded in your Other Thread.
My reply is mostly repetitious of the great advice already posted here, but you may find some additional info in My Post.
    Good Luck!
EDIT: How did you install Tiger, without the Install DVD?

  • Installing 2 Tiger Servers

    Hi,
I'm planning to install two Tiger Servers. Each one will have it's one public and static IP address. Almost all accesses (excepted from admins) will come from Internet. The DNS will be provided by DynDNS and I suppose it sould be possible to balance request between the two servers ?
Now, assuming this is possible I would like both servers to provide same services but I don't really understand how to set up the two servers. I would like to set up a "primary" one and the second would be updated automatically.
    Is this possible ?
    Thanks for any information

    Hi, thanks for your answer,
What services are you planning on running?
Web, Mail, AFP/FTP/SMB will probably replaced by WebDAV not sure by now.
As most users will come from Internet, the DNS will be here for the local servers and administration computers. DNS will also be used with users connecting through VPN (I plan to install the NetGear FVX 538 to manage VPN connexions).
I thought first that it would be doable to have two servers with same services but it appears clearly now that mails and users folders cannot be easily replicated so... I found a PowerMac G4 1 Ghz and I will use it to host mails and users folders (for AFP, SMB FTP or WebDAV). This will allow me to install a RAID card and to provide a more secure storage for data in the futur.
DNS load balancing is crude, but will do the job -
generally alternate requests for name resolution will
return each address. There's no concept of failover,
though - if one of your servers is down then 50% of
your users are going to be disappointed.
OK, that's an interesting remark. I will investigate that with DynDNS to see exactly how they do provide what they call "Round Robin"
I'm also not sure how DynDNS works with multiple IP
addresses reporting to be the same DynDNS client. You
may need to check with them on that issue.
Yes, I will see that with them. Thanks.
As for how to keep the servers in sync, that depends
on what you're running. If you're service static
content (e.g. standard web pages) then you'll need to
implement some kind of file synchronization process
(either automatic or manual) so that changes made to
one machine are automatically copied to the other.
This will typically involve some kind of latency -
for example if you set an automatic 5-minute
replication schedule, then the second machine could
be as much as 4:59 minutes behind the main server.
You will need to determine the trade-off between
shorter intervals vs. extra overhead of checking when
    there are no changes.
From a Apache point of view I would be very surprised if there isn't any way to keep two servers in sync. There is so many things available into Apache .
In anyway, contents should not change so frequently and then it should be enough easy to use a sync application to replicate changes to the second server. I will investigate that later too.
The other option for web traffic would be a database
solution - web content is stored in the database and
each web server pulls data from the database to build
pages on the fly. The advantage is that all web
servers are automatically in synch, the downside is
that you need a database server which becomes your
single point of failure - unless you have two
database servers that replicate between them, and so
    it goes on
Yes, I thought of that too but now that I will have a third computer sharing several disk I will see if it's doable to put all Web pages there too.
If it's not web traffic you're trying to sync you
need to give more information as to what it is since
other protocols have different limits and options
(for example DNS has a built-in master-slave system
to replicate DNS changes to secondary DNS servers.
The DNS was not my first interrogation. The mail server is what really make me think very loud. I will have the G4 in a few days and will start making all my tests to see if it's enough responsive to put the mail db and all mail user s accounts on a shared volume. As my two lines will not be very fast in my beginning it should be fast enough to start with this setup.
If you have any comments they are welcome as I still investigate a lot of things and ways to achieve my plans.
    Thanks again.
