Create folders from CSV

I have a CSV file that contains 8 columns.
Each column starts with a Business unit name, there are a couple or rows below each columns with Employee Names.
I need to create in a folder a new folder for each Business Unit, and within each Business Unit folder, i need to create subfolders for each employee name.

Take a look at this script:
https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/472300a7-9706-44df-a2a1-a85c4e6ebd13
You can run the next script 8 times for each business and change the variable:
            $Business - the Business unit name on each column
and only one time_
            $Path        -  path to create the folders
           $FileCSV   - import Business and Employees data from this file
Pay attention to CmdLet Import-Csv and its Delimiter if is ',' or ';'
$Business="B1"
$Path = "D:\TEMP\"+$Business
$FileCSV='d:\temp\teste2.csv'
md $Path
Set-Location $Path
$LinesCSV = Import-Csv $FileCSV -Delimiter ','
ForEach ($Line in $LinesCSV) {
    New-item $Line.$Business  -type directory

  • Automator: Create new folders from .csv file and put images inside.

    I have a challenging Automator task to achieve. I need to
    1) create a set of folders labeled with the contents in column A of a csv file. (example: column A1 JoeBrown A2 SuzyBrown A3 JimBrown etc..) resulting in
    3 folders titled JoeBrown, SuzyBrown, and JimBrown
    2) take the image represented by an image number in column B of the same csv file and move that file into the folder that was created (example: A1 JoeBrown gets a folder created by the name JoBrown and column B IMG_1234.jpg is physically moved from within the same folder as the .csv file into the folder created by column A.
    Both the csv and img files would be in the same folder. I have the script to create a set of folders from a csv list just can't complete the moving of files based on the contents of column B.
    SUMMARY: I have a folder containing several images img_0001, img_0002, img_0003 etc. and a csv file that contains columnA a series of names and column B a series of jpg image numbers. I need to have a script that will create folders labeled whatever name is in column A (see the script below. it works great!) then move the images from column B to the folders generated from column A.
    The csv script is:
    tell application "Finder"
      set mgFolder to container of mgCSVfile as string
      repeat with x from 1 to count paragraphs of mgList
        set text item delimiters of AppleScript to ","
        set mgThisList to text items of paragraph x of mgList as list
        set text item delimiters of AppleScript to ""
        set mgTopFolder to item 1 of mgThisList
        if (exists folder mgTopFolder of folder mgFolder) is false then
          make new folder at mgFolder with properties {name:mgTopFolder}
        end if
        set mgNewFolder to (folder mgTopFolder of folder mgFolder) as alias
        repeat with i from 2 to count mgThisList
          if item i of mgThisList is not "" then
            set mgSubFolder to item i of mgThisList
            if (exists folder mgSubFolder of folder mgNewFolder) is false then
              make new folder at mgNewFolder with properties {name:mgSubFolder}
            end if
          end if
        end repeat
      end repeat
    end tell
    Thanks for any help that may come my way.

    This should work
    (assumes a true "," seperated file with only two items per line, i.e.: Test,Test.jpg):
    The Run Shell Script Action is:
    cd "${1%/*}"
    while read line
    do
         FolderName=${line%,*}
         ImageName=${line#*,}
         mkdir "$FolderName"
         mv "$ImageName" "$FolderName"
    done < "$1"

  • Bulk Create Users from CSV: Error: "Put": "There is no such object on the server."?

    Hi,
    I'm using the below PowerShell script, by @hicannl which I found on the MS site, for bulk creating users from a CSV file.
    I've had to edit it a bit, adding some additional user fields, and removing others, and changing the sAMAccount name from first initial + lastname, to firstname.lastname. However now when I run it, I get an error saying:
    "[ERROR]     Oops, something went wrong: The following exception occurred while retrieving member "Put": "There is no such object on the server."
    The account is created in the default OU, with the correct firstname.lastname format, but then it seems to error at setting the "Set an ExtensionAttribute" section. However I can't see why!
    Any help would be appreciated!

  • Automator: Create folder from suffix of filename and put file names with same suffix into folder

    I've been using a script to use automator to create a folder from the filename and put that file into it the folder just created.
    I have a bunch of files that have similar names to them, but I don't want every file to be put into its own folder, instead I want all files with the same suffix (001) to go into the same folder.  I would also like the folder name to just be named the same as the suffix (001) instead of the full file name.
    For example all of these files names that end with the same integer (001) should be dumped into the same folder named "001":

    This script almost does what I need except for the fact that it screws up on files with periods in them
    for example
    1.2.3.4.txt
    will create the directorys 1, 2, 3, and 4 instead of 1.2.3.4

  • Automator: Create folder from filename

    I am trying to use Automator to query a file in a foldr, then create a folder based off of the filename, then move the file into the newly created folder. I am not as savvy as I thought that I was when it comes to Automator. Even thinking that Automator might not be the correct tool for the job. Each file has a different name or this would be a lot easier. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    You can use a Run AppleScript action to do the work, and feed items to it by using a service workflow, an Ask for Finder Items action, etc - for example:
    1) Service receives selected files or folders in Finder
    2) Get Folder Contents
    3) Run AppleScript
    on run {input, parameters} -- create folders from file names and move
      set output to {} -- this will be a list of the moved files
      repeat with anItem in the input -- step through each item in the input
        set {theContainer, theName, theExtension} to (getTheNames from anItem)
        try
          set destination to (makeNewFolder for theName at theContainer)
          tell application "Finder"
            move anItem to destination
            set the end of the output to the result as alias -- success
          end tell
        on error errorMessage -- duplicate name, permissions, etc
          log errorMessage
          # handle errors if desired - just skip for now
        end try
      end repeat
      return the output -- pass on the results to following actions
    end run
    to getTheNames from someItem -- get a container, name, and extension from a file item
      tell application "System Events" to tell disk item (someItem as text)
        set theContainer to the path of the container
        set {theName, theExtension} to {name, name extension}
      end tell
      if theExtension is not "" then
        set theName to text 1 thru -((count theExtension) + 2) of theName -- just the name part
        set theExtension to "." & theExtension
      end if
      return {theContainer, theName, theExtension}
    end getTheNames
    to makeNewFolder for theChild at theParent -- make a new child folder at the parent location if it doesn't already exist
      set theParent to theParent as text
      if theParent begins with "/" then set theParent to theParent as POSIX file as text
      try
        return (theParent & theChild) as alias
      on error errorMessage -- no folder
        log errorMessage
        tell application "Finder" to make new folder at theParent with properties {name:theChild}
        return the result as alias
      end try
    end makeNewFolder
    4) other actions as desired

  • AppleScript for renaming new folders from filenames??

    I want to put a bunch of files in their own individual folders with the foldername matching the file inside without the file extension.
    So say I select 30 files > create folder for each file > move these files into their own folder > name the folder the filename w/o extension
    I want to be able to do this with a single file or a batch. I've been messing around in Automator but haven't achieved what I want to do fully. I'd greatly appreciate anyone's help with this Thanks!!

    You can use Automator to create a Service, and place a script in a Run AppleScript action, for example:
    Service receives selected files or folders in Finder
    Run AppleScript:
    on run {input, parameters} -- create folders from file names and move
      set output to {} -- this will be a list of the moved files
      repeat with anItem in the input -- step through each item in the input
        set {theContainer, theName, theExtension} to (getTheNames from anItem)
        try
          set destination to (makeNewFolder for theName at theContainer)
          tell application "Finder"
            move anItem to destination
            set the end of the output to the result as alias -- success
          end tell
        on error errorMessage -- duplicate name, permissions, etc
          log errorMessage
          # handle errors if desired - just skip for now
        end try
      end repeat
      return the output -- pass on the results to following actions
    end run
    to getTheNames from someItem -- get a container, name, and extension from a file item
      tell application "System Events" to tell disk item (someItem as text)
        set theContainer to the path of the container
        set {theName, theExtension} to {name, name extension}
      end tell
      if theExtension is not "" then
        set theName to text 1 thru -((count theExtension) + 2) of theName -- just the name part
        set theExtension to "." & theExtension
      end if
      return {theContainer, theName, theExtension}
    end getTheNames
    to makeNewFolder for theChild at theParent -- make a new child folder at the parent location if it doesn't already exist
      set theParent to theParent as text
      if theParent begins with "/" then set theParent to theParent as POSIX file as text
      try
        return (theParent & theChild) as alias
      on error errorMessage -- no folder
        tell application "Finder" to make new folder at theParent with properties {name:theChild}
        return the result as alias
      end try
    end makeNewFolder

  • Howto make created folders/ files from one teacher, read only for other teachers?

    Hello there,
    as an admin @ school I was wondering how to make created folders/ files from one teacher, read only for other teachers?
     - In a 2008domain, created a group "teachers"
     - created a folder "teacher data" where all teachers have read/write permissions
    ideal,a teacher who make's a folder in "teacher data" should be the only oen who is able to add file's to that folder and dele that folder or files. Other teachers may be able to read the content of the folder.
    Is this possible to set up and how?
    many thanks.
    Nico.

    Hi Nico,
    You could set the permissions below to resolve the issue:
    For the root folder "teacher data": give the full control permission to CREATOR OWNER – "Subfolders and files only" and give the read/write permissions to the group "teachers"– "This folder only".
    Best Regards,
    Mandy

  • Just days ago, I downloaded and created folders for two batches of photos and now they are missing. They were not deleted by anyone, and even if they were, they were not found in my trash can. What happened? They were erased from my camera, so I am upset.

    Just days ago, I downloaded and created folders for 2 batches of photos I downloaded from my camera to iphotos but now both are missing.  They were not deleted and even if they were, were not found in my trashcan. I have looked through every folder and they are not there. Is there a bug that can get into iPhoto to do this? Is there a program Apple offers to retrieve lost photos? Thank you.

    How do you know they were not deleted? Is it possible that they were moved to the trash and the trash has been emptied, if not by you, perhaps by someone else?
    In the best case, you mean they were not deleted from your camera.  If so, it will be simple to merely download again from your camera after you have corrected any problem with your Mac or workflow.
    If you have a way to be certain that your two folders were not deleted from your Mac,  follow the directions provided by your Mac's Disk Utility to repair your Disk (not Disk Permissions.)  On more than one occasion, disk repair has restored the visibility of missing folders I knew I had not deleted.  If you have trouble with the process, post back which specific Mac OS version ( > About This Mac) you are using so we can offer specific help.
    It is also possible that the missing folders might be saved somewhere you do not expect them to be.
    It is also possible that they may merely be invisible and, thus, not showing in your Finder windows even after performing a Disk Repair.
    Here are some more ideas you can consider:
    Restart Mac and then look where you expect the folders to be.  They may be visible there now.
    If not, try a Spotlight search for the folder name(s) you used.  Spotlight may give you a list of places to look.  If you don't remember the folder name(s), try a search for the file type your camera uses for saved images.  My cameras save "jpg" files, but yours may save other image file types.
    You can also open a finder window and use the window's search oval to search.  The method allows you to use the search "+" button to add invisible items via the "File Visibility"  choice.
    debbie5891 wrote:... I have looked through every folder and they are not there....
    If you are using any version of Mac OS X, I doubt this statement can be true.
    If you select your disk volume name (not the Media item) in the sidebar of your Mac's Disk Utility, you will see that the number of Folders and files on your disk is very large.  For example,I keep my startup disk small and write most of my files to other disks.  Even so, my startup disk contains more than 195,000 folders.
    If you mean you used some software to search each folder, please post back the name of the app you are using.
    debbie5891 wrote: ... Is there a bug that can get into iPhoto to do this? ...
    I have not had the problem you describe, nor have I heard of such an iPhoto Bug.
    I have used every version of iPhoto I have seen including the current new version: iPhoto '11 version 9.5 (902.7).  You can find the version you are using by executing the iPhoto > About iPhoto menu command and post it back here.
    debbie5891 wrote:... Is there a program Apple offers to retrieve lost photos? ...
    I am not aware of any Apple apps that work specifically on photo files.  If you know the pathname to the lost files, and if you are comfortable with Unix commands, you might be able to use your Mac's Terminal utility to retrieve at least some of your images.  However, it will be MUCH simpler to merely download another copy from your camera.
    You can search the Mac App Store for "unerase" to find several apps that can unerase files, including deleted photo files, in certain circumstances even after the trash has been emptied.  To determine whether one or more of them may meet your needs, see their product info and reviews for specifics about each one.

    You're most welcome.
    If you need to post back for more information, please provide specifics on your Mac OS, iPhoto version, which of the suggestions offered here you have tried, and any details not already provided about the problem status.
