Create MS Word documents from data in an Apex Form/Report

My requirement is to create editable RTF form letters from data managed by an Apex application. I do not have BI publisher available and am looking at using the XSL-FO route. Effectively I want the user to select the desired data in the Apex application, hit a button and be presented with a word document containing the data, which they can then customise.
I know how to set Apex up to create PDFs based on reports using embedded XSL-FO but PDFs are not editable extra steps by the user. Also the user could export data to CSV and mailmerge with a word template but thats extra work for the user too.
In the past I've used PLSQL/XML/XSL-FO with .NET to do what I want here by generating an XML file with PLSQL and using .NET to associate the XML file to XSLT/XSL-FO template files creating output as varied as .doc, .ps and .html files.
Any ideas on acheving the same flexibility with Apex would be greatly appreciated. As my googling and forum hunting has not turned up much.
Thanks

Hi FunkyMonkey,
Do you know Docufy | Simplify with docufy ? It's an APEX application that lets you create/generate/edit word templates. Else JasperReports Library | Free software downloads at SourceForge.net lets you generate a multitude of report formats (RTF/pdf/docx/xlsx/xml/etc.) you can use iReports to easily create xml templates for the reports, It's a lot simpler then xsl-fo.

  • Create/Edit Word documents from Form 6 in the web

    How can I create/edit Microsoft Word documents from a form running under IAS.
    In client/server I can do it using OLE2.

    On the Web the OLE2 option would still work if your Forms server is on a windows machine with word on it. The files will be created on the server and you can get them to the client with the web.show_document built-in.
    If you want to create them on the client machine directly you need a Java bean that will activate the COM interface.

  • Create/edit word document from in Forms 6

    I want to create and or edit word documents stored in the operating system whose name (and path) is stored in the database. I have a form with a field of the doc name, how can I call word with the file name?
    I've never used OLE before so be specific.
    Thanks

    I've never used OLE before so be specific.So you know what to use. Look at Forms Help. There is no better place for this. You will get examples there.
    But Remember If you are using Forms on WEB this will give problems as OLE is not supported on WEB.

  • In acrobat 9 why can it never create a word document from a pdf correctly?

    So I have acrobat 9 and because I have lots of issues with editing PDFs in it I occasionally need to convert the pdf into a word to help with the editing.  However it never even comes remotely close to converting it correctly. I mean it is not even close.  and the PDF are very simple, no graphs no pics just text. Very frustrating/.

    GIGO.
    If the PDF's "under the hood" build is good then good stuff is exported.
    If the PDF's "under the hood" build is garbage then garbage is exported.
    Using a PDF creation process that actually has full compliance with the ISO Standard for PDF (ISO 32000-1) is a prerequisite for "Good stuff In".
    Some (but not most) PDF producers do this. Adobe's "do it".
    As well if such a PDF is a well-formed Tagged PDF then export is pleasingly good.
    The design function of "Tagged" PDF is two-fold.
    (1) Support Accessible PDF
    (2) Support export of PDF page content.
    Such export can be achieved by Acrobat 8 Pro, Acrobat 3D, Acrobat 9 Pro, Acrobat 9 Pro Extended, Acrobat X Pro and Acrobat XI Pro.
    Have done it / do it with these.
    Not meaning to be unpleasant here but the problem is with the PDF you have and not Acrobat.

  • Create printouts from data submitted in a form.

    Long story short:
    I'm looking to set up a system that automatically creates a document from data submitted in a form. So imagine I type "Jason" in the name field, "Orangutans" in the favorite animal field, and when I click print I'm presented with an A4/Letter document that says "my name is Jason and I love Orangutans" and the background is covered in cute orange apes. Where do I start?
    Long story long:
    I work at a computer store and due to my experience with Adobe products* I've been tasked with creating all the signage in the store. I've been doing all the signs for a year now and now we have a bunch of different signs that need printing every day. The most in-depth and time-consuming ones for me are signs for Trade-In computers. Unlike new computers, the specs are always different based on the particular model we buyback from the client. There are all kinds of fields that are different in each case.
    As it stands, I have an illustrator file with all the information in the right place, and when a computer comes in I take all the specs, fill in the right boxes and unhide the image layer so I get an image of the corresponding model on my document. This takes considerable time, and means the process is specific to me, i.e if I'm not in the store, the computers don't get put up for sale beacuse we can't add a spec/price sheet.
    What I want to do is automate the process so that anyone in the store can make these signs. All they will have to do is fill in a form (online or locally) that asks for model, year, RAM, HDD, etc**. Then when they click submit it returns a completed sign that they can print and put up next to the computer.
    I'm not entirely sure how to accomplish this. I've looked at Adobe's free online FormCreater***, and I like the simple data output that it creates. However, I'm uncertain as to my next steps. I imagine I'll need it to send the results to a computer with blank templates for the Trade-In computers. It would then need to populate the applicable fields and automate all the work I usually do.
    Where should I start? I'm willing to learn anything to get this working.
    Thanks,
    Jason
    *Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, inDesign
    **Total of ~18 text and 4 image fields need to be changed per sign.

    I'm willing to learn anything to get this working.
    Excellent! Right attitude.
    Where should I start?
    With my favorite "graphics program": FileMaker Pro. (Yep. My favorite graphics-project tool is a relational database program.)
    You see, you've discovered something that graphics people are discovering with increasing frequency all the time: Your project is not a graphics problem. It's a data problem.
    Note how little of your problem has to do with graphics. Emphasis mine:
    ...we have a bunch of different signs that need printing every day.
    the specs are always different based on the particular model
    automate the process so that anyone in the store can make these signs
    All they will have to do is fill in a form (online or locally)
    an image of the corresponding model
    See if this scenario sounds appealing:
    You have on your computer a single file, named TradeIns. You or one of your authorized users doubleClick it. It opens to a nicely organized form that is completely self-explanatory; requires absolutely no training to use.
    It's completely idiot proof. The user doesn't have to know anything about any graphics program. He can't break anything.
    Consistency is maintained because everything that can be automated is. Dependency intelligence is built in. Popup menus limit data entries to legitimate choices (ex: Models). Subsequent data entry choices are automatically filtered based on data already entered (ex: RAM configurations limited to those possible for Model). User prompts and hints (highlighting, event-driven messages, tooltips, data validation, etc.) make sure that all required information is entered.
    When the data entry is done, the user clicks a button labeled Print Preview: A3 Poster. The display automatically changes to a pre-defined A3 formatted layout with all the data graphically styled (Headline, descriptive blurb, bullet list of features, price, etc., etc.), the company logo and contact info in place, and a graphic of the appropriate model appears in the background. The user clicks a button labeled Print Poster. Next to it, by the way, is a button labeled Email Poster To...
    If you want, you can enable up to five people concurrently to access and interact with the solution in their web browsers from anywhere. So the data entry can be performed by staff members who logon (according to access priviledges you define and control down to the individual field level if need be) in the office, from home, or even on their iPhone. Multiple users can enter/edit data at the same time.
    It's 2:00 Tuesday when Customer leaves with his new machine. You clean up his trade-in a little; put it on the display shelf. Pull out your iPhone and take a photo of it. Tap the specs in. The data, including the photo, are simultaneously entered into the database. You lock the door and go home at 5:00, confident that a formatted sales flier of "Just Arrived" trade-ins will be automatically emailed to your mail list before you get home.
    You, having admin priviledges, can add to, alter, elaborate upon the functionality (ex; add an automatic price calculator) anytime you need, with no downtime on the system.
    How difficult, time-consuming is this?
    Once the requirement details are nailed down, and the raw beginning data for populating values lists is provided, an intermediate level FileMaker developer could build the above-described solution and have it up and running, ready for data entry, in less than a day, easy.
    Cost? $500 for one copy of FileMaker Pro Advanced. That's it. (And...*achem*...it's not rented; it's a normal perpetual license.) And with it you can build an unlimited number of other data-driven solutions for your business. You can even bind them as fully-functional standalone applications which you can distribute without royalties.
    Based on what you've described so far, the solution's starting data schema would be very simple:
    Create a new database with three related tables:
    Models
    Trade Ins
    Specs
    The fields for each table would be something like this:
    Models
    Model ID (primary key; text; unique)
    Model Name (text)
    Brand (text)
    Image (container)
    Trade Ins
    Trade In ID (primary key; text; computer's serial number)
    Model ID (foreign key; text; value list)
    Specs
    Spec ID (auto-enter serial number)
    Model ID (foreign key)
    Trade In ID (foreign key)
    Spec Name (value list)
    Description (text)
    You'd have two Layouts (screens): Data Entry and A3 Poster. You could build as many additional Layouts to display whatever combinations of the data you want for as many purposes as you may encounter. Export to PDFs or Excel spreadsheets any time. Build automated reports with live graphs, use conditional formatting, automate with scripts, etc., etc.
    Marvelous program. Every business should have it.

  • Upload / Open a Word Document from BDS with WebDynpro

    Hello,
    we use the BDS (Business Document Server) to storage our word files. Now we use WebDynpro with the UI OfficeControl.
    Could any one tell me, how to open/upload my documents from BDS with the OfficeControl.
    The UI FileUpload does not work, because it is not allowed to use specify URLs. link:[http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/b3/be7941601b1d09e10000000a155106/frameset.htm]
    For example that is the URL from the BDS: "SAPR3://SAPR3CMS/get/100/BDS_5FDB2_5FR/7B3AAF5B22AAD21197ED0060B0672A3C/Forminterface.doc"
    I use the class "CL_BDS_DOCUMENT_SET" with the method "get_with_url". result is above.
    Each example with the OfficeControl from SAP (Package SIOS) use the Mime Repository:
    mime_repository = cl_mime_repository_api=>get_api( ).
      CALL METHOD mime_repository->get
        EXPORTING
          i_url     = url
        IMPORTING
          e_content = content.
      wd_context->set_attribute( name = 'DATAS' value = content ).
    Have any one an idea, how BDS and WebDynpro works together

    What about getting the binary of the word document from BDS and download this?
    Yes, it exist a method calls "get_with_table". This return the binary path from my url above.
    Here is my source code:
    public attributes
    DATA oi_document TYPE REF TO if_ios_wordprocessing.
    DATA oi_factory TYPE REF TO if_ios_factory.
    METHOD wddomodifyview .
    DATA ol_node TYPE REF TO if_wd_context_node.
    DATA ol_office TYPE REF TO cl_wd_office_control.
    DATA vl_document TYPE xstring.
    short from
      vl_document = myBDS->get_with_table( ).
    Settings for UI OFFICE_CONTROL
      ol_node = wd_context->get_child_node( 'OFFICE' ).
      ol_node->set_attribute( name = 'DATASET' value = vl_document ).
    get the office control
      wd_this->oi_office ?= view->get_element( 'OFFICE_CONTROL' ).
    get the IOS Factory
          wd_this->oi_factory ?= ol_office->_method_handler.
    get proxy document
          wd_this->oi_factory->get_wordprocessing_proxy(
          IMPORTING proxy = wd_this->oi_document  ).
    CALL METHOD wd_this->oi_document->if_ios_document~opendocument( ).
    ENDMETHOD.
    When I compile everything is ok. But when I run my application, it nothing happen. No word file is opening or no error message. I create a ALC trace (SAPNOTE 949770).
    Each time when I try to open my word file comes a popup-window from the alc-trace:

  • Write to word document from oracle plsql

    Hi,
    Please provide methods to create and write to a word document from ORACLE PLSQL.We tried using UTL FILE package but it writes as ascii text.

    Divs wrote:
    The server m/c operating system is unix.so we need to invoke the procedure from Unix Os.In that case - not possible. For Windows COM (Component Object Model) to work, Oracle database need to be able to call and load the COM dynamic link libraries.
    Not to say that it is not possible. Have never used DCOM (the Distributed COM interface), and not exactly sure what it requires. Assuming that DCOM is not usable from a Linux perspective, you can still provide a manual interface. You create a NT tcp/ip service that exposes the COM interface calls that you need - in a secure fashion (even better - you can provide a higher level abstraction layer for the COM interface that does the specific job you need to be done).
    From Oracle you can then use PL/SQL's UTL_TCP package to open a connection to it and via this service craft a Word document on that Windows server.
    Are there web services for MS Office? I know Google is pushing that aspect hard (and embroiled in lawsuits with the US government and Microsoft about tender awards in this aspect). Now if Microsoft has "+office-on-the-web+", then one can create a Word document via a web browser. This means that there is an underlying web service - and that this can be called and used. The Evolution (Open Source Mail Reader) project for example uses the MS Exchange web service interface to provide a seamless interface to Exchange mail accounts (have used this everyday for a number of years now).
    The real question I would however ask is why Word specifically? Why not a more common format like PDF? You can even consider generating XML instead. Both Microsoft and Open Office and others are supporting XML formatted word processing documents (as oppose to older proprietary and binary formats).
    And why not use a Report Writer? I'm a big fan of doing as much as possible in Oracle (using PL/SQL most of the time). But certain things, like generating Word-style documents would be better done (and more flexible too) using a Report Writer.

    I tried that, but it doesn't work.

    Add this wordbean.jar in $ORACLE_HOME/forms/java directory and also added in the formsweb.cfg file (archive_jini=wordbean.jar)

    Generally when creating a Word file from either a Mac or Win7 pc and opening it on two different machines (either one first) it always prompts that the file is open and will be opened as read only.
    However opening a CSS file does not prompt that it is already open on or from any machine which is causing code edits to be lost.
    What we found from out testing:
    - The file can be saved from one user to the server and WILL NOT PROMPT on other machines until the saving machine has the Dreamweaver program closed completely
    - The file can be closed and  Dreamweaver minimised to the launch bar but it still will not register on other machines that it has been changed.
    - Also, until the  Dreamweaver program is closed on the machines, it will continue to open it's saved version of the file.
    Example Scenario:
    - User 1 opens test.css (which is 2000 lines) and adds some code to the end of the file to bring it up to 2500 lines
    - Meanwhile User 2 opens test.css as well (opens as 2000 lines as User 1’s edits have not yet been saved) and adds in code to bring it to 2300 lines
    - User 1 saves his file and closes it - but  Dreamweaver is still open.
    - User 2 also saves his file and leaves  Dreamweaver  open.
    - The server will report the size and last edit of the file the same as User 2 as he was the last person to save it (and if you open from the Win7 Machine it will show as User 2’s 2300 line version)
    - If User 1 then open's the file again (from either the 'recent' in Dreamweaver OR clicking on the file directly in Finder...which version opens.... The version that User 1 saved! Not the true version on the server, but the version that User 1 edited and saved with 2500 lines in it.
    - Same for User 2, he will open 'his' version with 2300 lines in.
    Other information:
    - Files are opened directly from the server
    - Sometimes the users will save incrementally and re-open
    - Most of the time users will save incrementally and keep the files open
    - The users will never not save incrementally and just save when closing the file once finished
    - The users are usually working on the files all day
    - It is always the bottom lines of code that are lost. It could be a case of the two versions being mixed up and cutting off the newly added lines based on the line count (possibly).
    It is as if Dreamweaver is holding a cache of the version locally and then only properly looking back to the server when it has been completely closed. It is very difficult to see how the server is causing such an impact on these files, there are very few logs which are giving any indication to the root cause of the problems.
    Anyone know if this is a known issue?
    Is there a way that there can be a featured implemented on the server that doesn't allow another user to open a file if it is already open on another machine?
    Thanks

    Your server file handling has nothing, and really nothing to do with Adobe software. If files don't get locked for (over-)writing and/or lose connection to the program opening them, then your server is misconfigured. It's as plain and simple and that. Anything from "known file types"/ file associations not being set correctly, MIME types being botched, crooked user privileges and file permissions, missing Mac server extensions, delayed file writing on the server, generic network timeout issues and what have you. Either way, you have written a longwinded post with no real value since you haven't bothered to provide any proper technical info, most notably about the alleged server. Either way, the only way you can "fix" it is by straightening out your server and network configuration, not some magic switch in Adobe's software.

  • HP Laserjet PRO MFP125nw doesn't print Microsoft Word documents from PC

    Hello.
    I've recently bought a brand new HP Laserjet PRO MFP125nw printer. The functions seemed really nice and the price was acceptable. I've brought it to my home, installed it following the manual, connected it to Wi-Fi etc. It generally works fairly well. PDF files are printed perfectly well, the scaning function works and it's generally a nice piece of technology.
    The only problem is that it just doesn't want to pring Microsoft Word documents from my PC. It prints it perfectly when I try to print .docx from my smartphone using the app, but it doesn't respond when I try doing it from the PC.
    My Office version is 2007 Enterprise. Do you have any idea what I should do?
    Thank you in advance

    Thank you a lot for a quick reply, Cbert. It's fantastic to see HP actually reading their forums and trying to help!
    I'll try plugging it into the wall and directly to the PC with a USB, we'll see if it works out.
    About Word, i've already tried reinstalling Word, even installed a 2003 version to check if it works with that. Well it doesn't. And as i've written before, I tried turning some .docx files to .pdf using a converter, but it still doesn't print them.
    Anyway, i'll try the first two points and keep you updated, thanks!
