CREATE MV ON PREBUILT TABLE uses up all UNDO; why?

Hi,
We have a DW application with star schemas and a few MVs. Our MVs are on top of prebuilt tables as we "manually" manage the aggregations. Creation of most of the MV definitions over the prebuilt tables is OK: they take just a few hundred milliseconds as expected when only the data dictionary is updated. But there is one MV which takes a lot of time (hours) to create and eventually it fails when it used up all UNDO (no matter how much we extend UNDO). This does not make sense at all.
The facts and my observations:
- 10gR2 EE with Partitioning
- The problematic prebuilt table is range partitioned (by calendar week), no indexes. The problem-free prebuilt tables are also range partitioned (same logic) and have a bitmap index on the partition key column (DATE datatype).
- Base table is range partitioned (by calendar week) with indexes and an MV log that is used by a single Oracle-managed MV. MV log is assumed to be OK.
- Adding a bitmap index on the partition key column of the problematic table did not fix the issue.
- In schemas with the same application installed but with a small amount of data, the creation of this MV takes longer than the expected few hundred milliseconds, but it is under 10 minutes (mostly under 3 minutes). After the successful creation only the expected objects (table (partitions) and MV) can be seen in user_objects.
- MV creation worked for a while until amount of data in prebuilt table reached a certain size.
- The MV definition is correct: same object name and same column structure as prebuilt table, MV is then used in queries producing correct results.
- When the CREATE MV ON PREBUILT TABLE is being executed, all available UNDO is allocated until there is no more space in tablespace.
- TEMP does not seem to be used
- No new object or segment can be seen.
- Execution of CREATE MV is done in parallel (32 PXs); all I could observe is that there was a "+db file sequential read+" from the data tablespace and 32 "+PX Deq Credit: send blkd+" operations
- Execution plan is not available
- Nothing related is in v$session_longops
Using UNDO would suggest some DML operation, most likely INSERTs but there is no need for those. All data is ready/available, all we need is the MV definition on the top of the prebuilt table.
So, why does CREATE MV ON PREBUILT TABLE needs UNDO ? What does it do and why?
Thank you for your help,
Szilard
PS: I am not sure if this category is the best place for this thread, but the categories in BI/DW were too specific.

• Trying to create table using Union All Clause with multiple Select stmts

The purpose of the query is to get the Substring from the value for eg.
if the value is *2 ASA* then it should come as ASA
where as if the value is *1.5 TST* the it sholud come as TST like wise for others too.
I am trying to execute the below written SQL stmt but getting error as:
*"ORA-00998 must name this expression with the column alias 00998.00000 - Must name this expression with the column alias"*
CREATE TABLE TEST_CARE AS
SELECT row_id, old_care_lvl,SUBSTR(old_care_lvl,3), len FROM test_care_lvl
WHERE LENGTH(old_care_lvl) =5
UNION ALL
SELECT row_id, old_care_lvl,SUBSTR(old_care_lvl,3), len FROM test_care_lvl
WHERE LENGTH(old_care_lvl) =7
UNION ALL
SELECT row_id, old_care_lvl,SUBSTR(old_care_lvl,3), len FROM test_care_lvl
WHERE LENGTH(old_care_lvl) =14
UNION ALL
SELECT row_id, old_care_lvl,SUBSTR(old_care_lvl,3),LEN FROM test_care_lvl
WHERE LENGTH(old_care_lvl) =7 AND old_care_lvl ='Regular'
I want to create the table using the above given multiple select using the Union ALL clause but when trying to create run the query getting error as "ORA-00998 must name this expression with the column alias 00998.00000 - Must name this expression with the column alias"
Please guide me how to approach to resolve this problem.
Thanks in advance.

When you create a table using a SELECT statement the column names are derived from the SELECT list.
Your problem is that one of your columns is an expression that does not work as a column name SUBSTR(old_care_lvl,3)What you need to do is alias this expression and the CREATE will pick up the alias as the column name, like this:
CREATE TABLE TEST_CARE AS
SELECT row_id, old_care_lvl,SUBSTR(old_care_lvl,3) column3, len FROM test_care_lvl
WHERE LENGTH(old_care_lvl) =5
UNION ALL
SELECT row_id, old_care_lvl,SUBSTR(old_care_lvl,3), len FROM test_care_lvl
WHERE LENGTH(old_care_lvl) =7
UNION ALL
SELECT row_id, old_care_lvl,SUBSTR(old_care_lvl,3), len FROM test_care_lvl
WHERE LENGTH(old_care_lvl) =14
UNION ALL
SELECT row_id, old_care_lvl,SUBSTR(old_care_lvl,3),LEN FROM test_care_lvl
WHERE LENGTH(old_care_lvl) =7 AND old_care_lvl ='Regular'
);You may not like the name "column3" so use something appropriate.

• Creating reports for user tables using XL reporter

Hi all
i wish to create a report based on user tables using the XL reporter.
question is: is it possible? and if so how can it be done?
appreciate the help
Yoav

Hi Yoav,
XL Reporter cannot pull data from UDTs. However, you can use an Excel template when creating your XL Reporter report and then embed VBA code in the template to pull the UDT data in to the report after the XL Reporter has finished generating the report. It all depends on how you need to combine the UDT data with other SBO data. If you are interested in a report based entirely on UDT data then it would be simpler just to write the report using VBA in Excel (or Crystal).
Kind Regards,

• Populating Empty Fields for Existing Internal Table Using For All Entries

I have an internal table called itab_extract that populates without any issues in SELECT A and SELECT B below. Trying to avoid looping, I am using select DB table 'for all entries' in itab_extract. I want the empty fields in itab_extract to populate from the values in the database. However, about 200,000 entries are being appended to the table, and, the values that existed for the already populated fields in itab_extract are gone, and the new fields are populated.
I've played with the syntax and cannot seem to get it to work. My next option is a time consuming loop.
How should the for all entries syntax look to accomplish filling the empty fields in the itab? Thank-You
*read ekko
select ebeln lifnr aedat bsart from ekko *SELECT A*

select ebeln lifnr aedat BSART from ekko *SELECT B*
appending CORRESPONDING FIELDS OF TABLE me->itab_extract

from ekpo
FOR ALL ENTRIES IN itab_extract
where ebeln = itab_extract-ebeln.

Hi Tom,
This SQL statement will be time consuming, Do not use a loop.
There are two options.
1. Select EKKO and EKPO details based on standard SAP view. (You can type EKKO in se11 view to find the correct view).
also use one range table populate r_aedat and s_date2 in the same. So you where condition will have r_newrange and
s_bsart. Also do not use into corresponding fields, it is not a good idea. It will increase your performance. Maintain the proper
sequence (Based on database structure of EKKO and EKPO)
2. If you are keen to use for all entries, then first select ekko then after your sy-subrc check get the data from EKPO.
Should be like this.
select ebeln bsart aedat lifnr from ekko into table gt_ekko where aedat in r_newrange and bsart in s_bsart.
if sy-subrc eq 0.
sort gt_ekko by ebeln ascending.
select ebeln ebelp werks matnr into table gt_ekpo for all entries in gt_ekko where ebeln eq gt_ekko-ebeln.
endif.
Hope it helps,

• How to find a cloumn or table used in all the reports

Hi ,
Suppose I have like 15 to 20 reports and i want search a particular column or table where it has been used in all the reports.Is there any easy way ?
Thanks,

Well "used in reports" can mean different things. Column used for display or columns used for filtering for example.
For a filter column you could literally search for
MyTable."Sales Rep"Whereas for a display column you'd need to search for
MyTable.&quot ;Sales Rep&quot ; (without the blank space after quot
That's simply due to how stuff gets stored in the webcat:
<saw:column formula="MyTable."Sales Rep"" columnID="c3">PS: How can you correctly escape the string &quot so it doesn't become " in here?

• Tables used in all my reports

I've got about 120 reports that are using Tables. views, or stored procedures(SQL Server).
I need to make a list of all tables that these reports are using. Is there an easier way to get this info then opening each report up in design view and listing them down?

Hi Mike,
Opening the reports then going into Show SQL Query and copying the From clause from the query and pasting into your documentation would work. Again you do have to open each report.
If you're bold, you could create a small app in VB that will open the report for you and retrieve the tables, then you could do with them whatever you want.
Good luck,

• Creating FK's in tables that are all ready created

Good afternoon,
I have 4 tables set up, and need to create foreign keys in three on them relating back to my EMPLOYEE table. The FK will be based on the employee number column in the EMPLOYEE table.
Once these tables are created and populated, how do I link a PK to a FK, and how do I create a FK in a table that is already created.
Many Thanks,
-Robert

Hello Robert,
you can do that with APEX as well:
1. Login to your workspace
2. Go into "SQL Workshop"
3. Start the "Object Browser"
4. Select "Tables" (if not selected already)
5. Pick your desired table (e.g. CONSULTING) from the table list
6. Click on "Contraints" in the detail view
7. Click on "Create"
8. Enter your desired Contraint Name (e.g. CONSULTING_FK)
9. Chose your desired Contraint Type (e.g. Foreign Key)
10. Chose your option for action on delete for that key (see lakes post above)
11. Chose the column that contains the foreign key (e.g. Cnslt_Emp)
12. Chose the table to be referenced (e.g. EMPLOYEE)
13. Chose the column to be reference (e.g. Emp_Num)
14. Continue
15. Check if all settings are correct, see the SQL statement if you want, and click Finish.
To learn more about what you can do with the Object Browser and the other components in the SQL Workshop, you might want to study the [url http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17556_01/doc/user.40/e15520/toc.htm]APEX SQL Workshop Guide. It contains step-by-step guides for almost all functionality you'll need in every day life.

• Creating XML from Relational Tables using java

I would like to create an XML document by querying relational tables in java
try {
connection = getConnection();
final String qryStr = "select XMLElement( foo, 'bar' ) from dual";
final OracleXMLQuery qry = new OracleXMLQuery(connection, qryStr);
final String xmlString = qry.getXMLString();
I would expect this to give the following result that I get from running the statement in SQL Developer
select XMLElement( foo, 'bar' ) from dual
<FOO>bar</FOO>
Instead I get
<?xml version = '1.0'?>
<ERROR>oracle.xml.sql.OracleXMLSQLException: Character ')' is not allowed in an XML tag name.</ERROR>
Is this the correct way to go about this?

Is this the correct way to go about this?
Not really.
OracleXMLQuery class is the Java-side implementation of DBMS_XMLQUERY APIs.
It's mostly designed to generate a canonical XML document out of a SQL query.
Assuming a query like "SELECT col1, col2 FROM my_table", the resulting XML should appear like this :
<ROWSET>
<ROW>
<COL1>123</COL1>
<COL2>ABC</COL2>
</ROW>
<ROW>
<COL1>456</COL1>
<COL2>XYZ</COL2>
</ROW>
</ROWSET>
So in your test, since the resulting column is not aliased (XMLElement), you're actually trying to generate something like this :
<ROWSET>
<ROW>
<XMLELEMENT(FOO,'BAR')>
<FOO>bar</FOO>
</XMLELEMENT(FOO,'BAR')>
</ROW>
<ROWSET>
which of course is invalid, hence the error message.
If you want to generate only <FOO>bar</FOO> as output, just use a regular PreparedStatement with your query and access the document in the ResultSet with the proper getter.

• Finding tables used in all the procedure.

Hi,
We have around 2000 procedures in our oracle 9i database.
I want to know which procedures are calling few of the tables eg: emp or dept.
Is there any way I can findout or Is there any tool.
Regards
MMU

Make a list of all the packages and procedures and then make a sql file with the following procedure to check their definitions
dbms_metadata.get_ddl
Spool the output in one file and grep for hints. Keep teh track of which packages you want to modify and then modify them.
Hope this Helps

• Query on Materialized View created on Prebuilt Table

Hi,
I am trying to explain the scenario below on Materialized View which I want to setup for our database.
I have created a materialized view on prebuilt table on target side on primary key. Now for purging history data from target side which are more than 5 years old I have executed the following steps:
1. Dropped the materialized view which was created previously on prebuilt table in target side.
2. Deleted the data from that target table which are more than 5 years old.
3. Now created the materialized view again on the prebuilt table.
Now, the problem which I am facing is that - if any changes happens in the source side during the above 3 steps on the target side those changed records were not captured even after successfully building materialized view again in the target side (i.e. after completing step-3 of above the intermediate changed records were not captured).
Can you please let me know exactly what I am doing wrong here and how can I achieve my intended result.
Regards,
Koushik

See matelink for doc id *252246.1*. The document id says: A materialized view was defined on a Table A. This table had a referential constraint defined against another table, Table B. This constraint was defined as 'ON DELETE CASCADE'. An 'ON DELETE CASCADE' constraint is not allowed on views but as the constraint was created on the table underlying the materialized view, Table A, it could be created although it would behave as a constraint on the view. The constraint existed for performance reasons, which is permitted, and was disabled when created but a general script had been run to enable all constraints. When a delete was performed on Table B the error above was reported although there was no view created on Table B.

• Unable to create Entity objects for tables in TimesTen database using ADF

Hi,
I am not able to create Entity and View objects for tables in TimesTen database using ADF. I have installed TimesTen client on my machine.
I have created a database connection by using connection type as "Generic JDBC" and giving driver class and JDBC URL. I am attaching screen shot of the same.
I am right clicking on Model project and selecting New option after that I am selecting ADF Business components and in it I am selecting Business components from tables and there I am querying for tables.I am getting list of tables and when I am trying to create a Entity object from the table after clicking finish Jdev is closing by itself giving an error.
Can anyone please help me how to create Entity objects for tables using TimesTen as database.I might be missing some jars or the way I am creating connection might be wrong or any plugins required to connect to TimesTen.

What is the actual error being given by Jdev? Are you sure that the JDBC connection is using the TimesTen JDBC driver JAR and not some other JDBC driver or the Generic JDBC/ODBC bridge?
Is ADF even supported with TimesTen?
Chris
