Create overlay graphic for other running programs

Ok, I have a small idea for creating an "overlay" graphic panel that i wish to hook ontop
of another running program on the computer.
For example, lets say we have internet explorer, and i wish to create a small java application
that will "paint" ontop of internet explorer. Perhaps drawing a transparent image right in
middle of internet explorer.
Anyone have any suggestions on how this could be accomplished?

This is a VI which calls the undocumented MessageBoxTimeout function.
It is similar to the MessageBox function (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms645505%28v=vs.85%29.aspx), but it does include the ability to have the message go away after a certain amount of time (setting timeout to 0 leaves the dialog open indefinitely).
If you set Message Box Modality to MB_SYSTEMMODAL, it will display in front of all applications.

  • Checking for a running program?

I have a program I'm working on that will have background threads, and instead of starting up a new instance when the main method is invoked, I'd like to bring the GUI up (just gui.show();) if the background threads arent running.
How do I go about checking for the running program?

Use the locking concept.   You can either create your own, or a popular one to use is ESINDX, passing parameters: relid 'ZZ', SRTFD program name, and SRTF2 = 0.
    The logic is:
Attempt to get lock (FM ENQUEUE_ESINDX, perhaps).
If lock got -> run program
If lock not got -> quit.
You have to put this logic at the start of your program.

  • Creating Icons/Graphics for High DPI Displays, naming and sizing

I'm having to create and deliver graphics and icons for a native desktop windows applications that must support Windows 8.1 and variety of screen resolutions which ranges from standard resolution monitors to new 4k high density displays.
Typically for iOS you would deliver an icon using the following size and naming convention to support both standard and Retina 2x devices.
    Standard Resolution
    Icon-72.png (actual size 72x72 pixels)
    Retina Display
[email protected] (actual size 144x144 pixels)
For Android on a 4k device, you might do the following:
[email protected] (actual size 288x288 pixels)
My question is would you also follow this same naming and sizing convention for native Windows 8.1 desktop apps? I'm assuming you would, but I'm getting some pushback.
This is slightly new territory in Windows desktop, but I'm hoping there may be a few who have experience and offer there suggestions.
    Thank you and best regards,

  • Reg: Creating sub menu for a concurrent program under menu on the Menu bar

    Hi all,
I would like to know, how we can create a sub menu for a conc. program under a sub menu on the Menu Bar ?
    Thanks In Advance.
    Regards,
    Neeti

It is a 2 step process. First, enable a new menu entry, which when called will fire a user-named trigger, where the call to the concurrent programs form is the executed. How to do it depends on the release. Previous to 11.5.10, this has to be done trough custom.pll, and 11i10 an r12 with forms personalization. Documentation and examples exists for both cases, have a look on metalink.

  • Challenging question: Status report for long running program...

    Hi All,
With all the control stuff around like cl_dd_document I was wondering if there is a way to give a user a report which shows the progress of a very long running program?
i.e. If I have a 20 step process and each step takes 1 minute, the following is what I would like to occur:
Output a status line in a report format, run step, repeat until all steps are finished.
This is similar to the status bar, but with a history of what is happening.  Obviously scrolling needs to be considered also.  Ideally it would behave like sapinst would but in a reporting format.
Obviously this has to bypass the PBO/PAI approach, hence why I believe UI Controls must be the answer.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Regards,
    Matt

Without using a control, you could try the old report refresh trick using set user-command and an action triggered after an RFC in a new task ... see basic demo below:

  • Can I create digital signatures for other people?

I am trying to determine if there are rules/software limitations that prohibit me from creating a digital signature for other people on my PC. As an example, I support a Vice President-can I create his digital signature and store it to use on his behalf? I would also have my own signature created and stored.  Thanks.

    Consider the following:
if you use your local CA server to issue digital signature certificates, there is no cost, because you are eligible to issue so many certificates as you need. However, documents signed by these certificates will be considered trusted only within your AD
forest and other machines that explicitly trust your local CA. Any external client will not trust your signatures.
If you want to make your signature trusted outside your network (say, in worldwide), you need to pruchase a certificate from trusted commercial CA (VeriSign, GoDaddy, GlobalSign, StartCom, etc) according to respective vendor price list. In that case you
don't need to have your local CA server, because it is not used. All certificate management is performed by the external CA. A most common scenario is to purchase signing certificate for particular departament principals (head managers) or few certificates
for a whole company (all documents are revised by a responsible person or persons who holds signing certificate and sign them after review).
so, it is not clear from your post what exactly you need.

  • Changing audio output device for currently running program

I'm not sure where to put this question, but all my searching hasn't seemed to find an answer...
If I have a program running, iTunes, VLC, a game, whatever, and want to change audio output from say Line Out to Headphones, I have to restart the program for the change to take effect. Is this by design/normal or am I missing something somewhere?

this is actually a quiet significant issue. There is no way in Flash to select the audio output device.
Today  people have regular speakers and a separate headset. They all use the  speakers for music and the headset for voice. Skype i.e. has the option  to choose audio output device and its really handy, because
you dont  have to bother to set the default device to the headset everytime you  want to use it.
If you set the default device to the headset all other apps will send their audio  output to the headset - which is not what you want either.
So people  really want to leave the default device set to the speakers and not to  the headset.
    Nokia did this for Java
JRT 2.1 / Nokia UI API updated to version 1.4:
AudioOutputControl extension for controlling which audio output device, for example the device loudspeaker or earpiece, is used to play back audio
    This really is an issue.

  • Runtime exception for other than programming error.

In a conversation the question arose whether it could be a case of throwing a runtime exception for anything other than a bug. The tutorial on oracle site says "These Usually Indicate programming bugs" leading to think that can be used in situations in which there is no bug.
Anyone have a practical example of a runtime exception when there is no bug?
    Thanks.

    937643 wrote:
Ok. But. Do you think that in these cases the use of a runtime exception could be considered a bad practice? That's actually a matter of some debate.
On the one hand, Java has defined two major kinds of exceptions since the very beginning (unchecked exceptions, which are RuntimeException, Error, and their descendants; and checked exceptions which are everything else). The intended use of those was that checked exceptions should be for things that can normally go wrong in the execution of a program, even without a bug or without a major internal JVM error, such as a failed attempt to persist something or a network connection dropping--stuff that a programmer might normally be expected to deal with; while unchecked exceptions were created for things that a programmer would not normally handle in his code (except possibly at major architectural boundaries), like buggy code or an internal JVM failure.
With the rule about having to catch or declare checked exceptions, but not unchecked ones, that makes it easy for programmers so say, "Okay, I know exactly what can go wrong here that I might be expected to handle and I can therefore choose what to do with it; there will be no surprises. But I don't have to deal with problems that are outside my normal responsibility, like somebody passing me a null when they shouldn't have." It gives a programmer a nice bit of control, and the ability to know he hasn't missed something, kind of like the type safety provided by a strongly typed language.
    At least that's the theory.
In practice, most checked exceptions either just get bubbled up to the next layer (via a throws clause), or caught wrapped in a fairly generic layer-appropriate exception and rethrown. There's not a whole lot of use made of what checked exceptions provide, and there's a lot of ugly boilerplate code that doesn't do anything useful for the app but is just there to satisfy the compiler.
So, some people think that checked exceptions are useless, or mostly useless, and favor unchecked exceptions in most or all cases. I believe that's part of the philosophy of Spring, but I'm not totally sure.
The idea is that since most of the time you can't do anything about exceptions that might be thrown to you, it's wasteful and pointless to have all that code to catch and rethrow. In this viewpoint, it would be better if, for example, not providing a throws clause at all meant that you could throw any exception. Any given code can still catch specific exceptions that it knows it can handle, but we don't have to write a bunch of code notating something that we're not really doing anything about.
Personally, I used to be totally in the checked exception camp. However, all the pointless boilerplate is wearing me down. I'm still not completely convinced though, and here's why: If I'm calling a method, I'd like to at least be able to see what might go wrong, so that I can decide how to deal with it. If all exceptions were unchecked, and the throws clause were optional, a conscientious developer could still provide it, and list the unchecked exceptions his method might throw to me, and/or he could document them in the javadoc comments. But a lot of developers won't do that, or even if they start to, as their method evolves, without the compiler to enforce it, they won't keep it up to date.
So there are advantages to both approaches. I personally would to know that the information will always be available to me, but for the small percentage of the time where I actually use it (like handle one specific exception one way and some other exception differently), I'm not sure if it's worth the overhead.

  • Creating wrapper procedures for Long running procedures

In SQL server, we can create a wrapper procedure to call long running procedure. Wrapper procedure calls long running procedure and returns to its calling application and give message "your request has been received and being processed. result will sent to your email-id." So user need not wait for complete execution for his request. From long running stored procedure we can send email to user stating all execution result he wants.
Is there any way to implement it in Oracle9i? Or any other technique to call such long running procedures asynchronously through wrapper procedure sothat user need not to wait and also avoid "request time out" error.

This question would be better off posed in the Oracle Data Provider for .NET forum.

  • Is LabVIEW able to create ActiveX Object for other sw to use?

I would like to create some ActiveX object from LabVIEW that VB could use it. How do I do it? I only find info about labVIEW use ActiveX created by other SW. Please let me know if LabVIEW has such ability. Thanks.

You cannot create a new kind of ActiveX object in LabVIEW, but you can use ActiveX to control LabVIEW (or a LabVIEW-built EXE) and run your VIs programmatically from other development environments.
Below is a modified excerpt from an example provided by NI on running a LabVIEW VI from Visual Basic:
    Dim lvapp As Object
    Dim vi As Object
    Dim paramNames(4), paramVals(4)
    Set lvapp = CreateObject("LabVIEW.Application")
    viPath = lvapp.AppDir + "\examples\apps\freqresp.llb\Frequency Response.vi"
    Set vi = lvapp.GetVIReference(viPath)
    vi.FPWinOpen = True
    paramNames(0) = "Amplitude"
    paramNames(1) = "Number of Steps"
    paramNames(2) = "Low Frequency"
    paramNames(
    3) = "High Frequency"
    paramNames(4) = "Response Graph"
    paramVals(0) = cwnAmplitude
    paramVals(1) = cwnNumSteps
    paramVals(2) = cwnLowFreq
    paramVals(3) = cwnHighFreq
' paramVals(4) will contain the value of Response Graph after running the vi.
    Call vi.Call(paramNames, paramVals)

  • FCP pre-created key mapping for other NLE's?

The key mapping feature of FCP is handy because you can set up
a custom keyboard that emulates another NLE editing system that you
might be more familiar with while learning FCP (i.e. Avid).
Does anybody know if anyone has created keyboard mapping
file presets for download or purchase? I'm interested in emulating
Pinnacle key mapping in FCP. I realize I can manually create it but thought
perhaps there was a source you could go to where it was already done
    for you.
    Any input would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I don't think there's any place to buy them.. you might find a user on here who has emulated something like that and could email it to you. I use a keyboard mapping similar to Avid but it really is the best of both keyboards in one IMHO.
it's easy to map so with the time spent searching you could probably make it to your liking.
