Creating a file in servlet?

Hello,
I want to read the content of a website and store them
in a file on my local disk, but I can't do it with servlet.
In my servlet doGet method I have:
protected void doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse resp)
     try
     URL xml_file = new URL("http://localhost:8080/xml/search.xml");
     InputStream in = xml_file.openStream();
     InputStreamReader read = new InputStreamReader(in);
     FileOutputStream output_file = new FileOutputStream(new File("xml.xml"));
     int c;
     while ((c=read.read())!=-1)
          servletOutStr.println(c);
          output_file.write(c);
Doesn't      :FileOutputStream output_file = new FileOutputStream(new
File("xml.xml"));" should create an empty file "xml.xml" in the same
folder? Or it only works only in the main method?
Thank you in advance for your reply.

The servlet is running on a web server, so it creates the file there. But when you say "in the same folder", the truth is that it creates the file in the servlet container's current directory, not in the same folder as something you were thinking of. I don't understand why you would use a servlet to do this task when an ordinary Java application would work.

  • How to create file form servlet in our virtual directory

    hi....
    I want to create a file form my servlet in my virtual directory..
    my directory name ia vps
    it cconatin vps -> WEB-INF -> classes-> servTest
    servTest is servlet....
    and i want to create file from servTest in vps directory..
    actually i am trying to create file but it by default saved in windows/system32 directory.

    You need to give the absolute path to create the file, if you just give the filename, the file will be created in the working directory which is system32 for Windows.
    You could either hardcode it, or you can use ServletContext.getRealPath("/") ( http://java.sun.com/j2ee/sdk_1.3/techdocs/api/javax/servlet/ServletContext.html#getRealPath(java.lang.String) ) This will return the path on the server's filesystem where your application folder ( under webapps for Tomcat) is located.
    NOTE: If you application is in the form of a .war file, this may not work! The server may return a null.
    "/" specifies the root i.e., your application's highest level directory. If your application is webapps/vps then getRealPath("/") will return something like C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Tomcat 4.1\webapps\vps

  • Creating files from servlets or jsp

    The issue that I have is this
    I've been working with eclipse, netbeans, tomcat, glassfish, servlets and jsps.
    I have a little servlet/jsp web application that create few files from the servlet. Those files I need to make them visible to the browser because they are the end result of the servlets/jsp work.
    When I run the server from netbeans/eclipse they deploy the war file into tomcat/glassfish server and run the app.
    So far there is no problem here, just that.. the files created with the app are created into the project folder.
    If I manually run the server, those files are created in the folder from I started the server, so what I did is get into the deployed/unpacked war and from there start the server.
    Only that way I could make those files visibles to download.
    Is there a better way to do this? (of course, it must be, but I don't know how).
    What I want is, deploy the web-app and make the app create those files at the same folder of the web-app to allow those file could be downloaded, no matter from where or how the server is started.
    In the near future I need to install few web-apps like this at the same server, so I can't still starting the server from the web-app folder (as I did it until now).
    I read about the request.getContextPath(); but it return no the real address just the context address (something like "/my_app"), so when I use that address to create a file, what I get is something lik "/my_app/myFile.txt".
    I hope you can give some advices of how to solve my issue.
    Thanks in advance

    Right now I know the absolute path to the tomcat/glassfish where the web-app is deployed, so I can use that address, but in the future that web-app could be deployed in another server and I can't know what address does it have.
    I wonder if there exists a way to know the current absolute address of the web-app, or a way to create, "%this-web-app-absolute-addres%/someDir/myNewFile.txt"No, you're solving the wrong problem. Don't store files you create in the context of the web application, or even in the context of the application server. Store them somewhere else entirely. Then the person who configures the web application just has to set up the name of the directory where they are stored as a variable for your application.

    I am not able to figure out the error, can anyone throw some light on this issue.

    You are trying to invoke the class from the command prompt. My guess is that MultiContentSender contains a package, which means that you'll need to add your WEB-INF\classes directory to the classpath before it will work. Classes stored in this directory are expected to be invoked through tomcat, which builds it's own classpath.

  • Creating a file in different directory.....

    i have program that uses File class from Java IO package for creating a text file. I have written this program in c:\test\proj and i am running the program in that location. So obviously text file is created in the same directory...
    But the information from this text file is required for my servlet that runs on web server tomcat 4.1..so i have to manually copy this file and place this on the required directory...i have written program to create the same file on in C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Tomcat 4.1\webapps\examples this directory but this is not happening..I reckon this is because of the spaces in the directory names....
    my problem is i am running program on c:\text\proj directory and i want text file to be created in C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Tomcat 4.1\webapps\examples...
    the statement i am using to create a file is...
    File f = new File("C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Tomcat 4.1/webapps/examples/ping.txt");
    do i have to modify the statment????
    please provide me with a solution...
    thanx

    You must be getting an IOException of some description when you open the output stream to the File.
    Or else you're looking for your file in the wrong place ...

  • Creating A File Resource Using Tomcat JNDI

    Hi guys,
    My problem is that I am creating a web service and I cannot get to a properties file without creating an absolute reference to that file. If I was creating a servlet I would simple use getServletContext() method to get a relative reference to it. However since it is an axis web service i have to deploy my applications in the WEB-INF/services directory, and because it does not interact with the axis servlet I cannot use getServletContext(). So i thought I could create a JNDI file resource reference in the tomcatHome/conf/context.xml file, similar to how I created a JNDI connection pool. The resouce definition looks like this;
    <Resource name="resource/dialogueEngineConfig" auth="Container"
                      type="java.io.File"
                      url="file:/Applications/apache-tomcat-5.5.1/webapps/axis2/META-INF/DialogueEngine.properties">
    </Resource>now I tried to access the resource in my code like this;
    // Obtain our environment naming
    Context envCtx = (Context) new InitialContext().lookup("java:comp/env");
    // Look up our file
    File  f = (File) envCtx.lookup("resource/dialogueEngineConfig");However I get a NamingException; 'Cannot create resource instance'
    I don't understand why I cant create a file resource in JNDI, it seems like a simple enough thing to do. Am I doing something wrong or missing something? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello xalien,
    I have the same problem. I need to access external xml config file via JNDI from my servlet, running on Tomcat 5.0.28. Have you manage to define an URL resource? If so, please provide an example how to do it. Many thanx.

  • How to create a file in memory and then store it in database

    Hi Guys,
    I'm wondering how could i create a file such a plain text or css styleshhet in runtime and then store this file in the database. I need to save them in the database cause the application doe not have write permission to filesystem.
    Is that possible ? Can a file be created only in memory and saved in database instead of filesystem?
    I'd appreciate your help on this.
    Thanks a lot.

    jack.black wrote:
    What i really need is to save information as a stylesheet into db. These information is input in a form and sent to a servlet. You have a servlet and in there you are creating data, lets say the data is representable as a string.
    You have a database layer (however it is implemented) which takes data (string) and stores it as a blob presumably.
    That is two distinct and completely separate processes.
    The second has nothing to do with the first because the second doesn't care how the data is created. And you should write the code for the second and test it completely independent from the first (just as all of the database layer should be handled.)
    As for the first you can use StringWriter, perhaps wrapping it in PrintWriter if you wish. Do whatever you want to put data in there. Be sure to close it, extract the string and then use it.
    The only limitation to processing like this is that if the data gets too large (individually or due to number of threads) it could adversely impact the application.

    Here is the sample script, U can use this script to build war file:
    Change the following before running the script:
    WebAppDir path to the Tomcat webapps directory
    AppsName value to ur Project Name ie Ajax to diff name.
    basedir - Give webapps dir of ur src files.
    <project default="build" basedir=".">
    <target name="build">
    <tstamp/>
         <property name="WebAppsDir" value="c:\Tomcat\webapps"/>
    <property name="AppsName" value="Ajax"/>
         <delete dir="${WebAppsDir}\${AppsName}"/>
    <delete file="${WebAppsDir}\${AppsName}.war"/>

  • Is it possible in KM to change "create new file" dialog?

    Is it possible in KM to change "create new file" dialog (Folder -> New -> Text File...) on consecution of my own screens(I mean user inputs information, presses next button, then again inputs information and so on)? And if its possible, could you please tell me how to do this. I'm new to KM as well as to SAP EP...

    Hi Aliaksei,
    the PDF referred to mainly explains how to configure commands (within layout sets etc), but as far as I understand your question, you want to develop your own screenflows / command. First, I definitely would disadvise a beginner in the EP/KM area to start with such a task...
    Anyhow, there is a one-step-screenflow-command tutorial on SDN: https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/library/kmc/implementing flexible ui one-step-screenflow.article
    For more steps, you could start decompiling a command class of a command which is more or less similar to your needs (and the underlying classes) to get further insight.
    If you really should get that far and have implemented your own command, you just can switch the implementation class if you want to change the logic for an existing command under System Admin - System Config - KM - CM - UI - Commands - UI Commands - <command in question> Java Class setting.
    Hope it helps

  • How to call any .tmpl file from servlet by sending some parameters ?

    Hi,
    I am new to Java Servlet and HTML template language ( anyfile.tmpl).
    I have created simple login authentication with user registration for new user.
    If user already exists, after successful login, he should be navigated to INBOX page (that inbox page is some inbox.tmpl file) from SERVLET itself using following BOLD statements given in code below. But its not working.. :-( Please do the needful.
    Thank you.
    if (session == null) {
         try {
              userName = request.getParameter("login");
              pwd = request.getParameter("password");

              try {
    //Database connection, data fetching, query execution etc.
    // code will go here
                   while (rs.next()) {
                   if (userName.equals(rs.getString("username")) & pwd.equals(rs.getString("pwd"))) {
                        String u_name = userName;

                        session = request.getSession();
                        session.setAttribute("user", userName);
                        String inbox = context.getInitParameter(INBOX);
                        Template inboxTmpl = new Template(inbox);

    *                    inboxTmpl.setParam("ph_no", ph_no);*
    *                    inboxTmpl.setParam("address", address);*
    *                    out.println(inboxTmpl.output());*
                        System.out.println("Login successful..");
                        break;
                   rs.close();
         pstmt.close();
    con.close();
    (P.S - I am forced to use HTML.TEMPLATE(i.e. .tmpl file) instead of JSP)}

    Where does Template come from?
    But its not working.The other day I called the car repair shop. I told them my car did not work and I wanted them to fix it. They asked what was wrong, whether it did not start, whether suspicious sounds were heard, whether the car did not want to brake any longer, whether it gave a smoke from the exhaustion, whether the wind shield was broken, whether the oil was leaking etc. But I insisted just telling them "it doesn't work".

    Session in Java web application is started by the web server itself.
    In a servlet you can get the session by
