Creating a Java game for Windows

Does anyone know a website or tutorial that provides information to Java developers, regarding the production of games? I would like to create my own chess game in Java for use on a Windows platform.

Put a combination of the following key words in your favorite search engine, you should find something :

double buffering

The main idea in most simple games is to check the state of your game and then to draw that state. You do this once every 25th of a second (the runnable interface lets you do so). This is done over and over again until the end of the game.
If you simply rewrite the paint(Graphics) method of your drawing without implementing double buffering, then you'll get a "flickering" game. How tos on double buffering with Java are all over the net.

Hey, I'm creating a java game, and I did research, and found that this question has been asked many, many times. But my question unfortunately did not match up with any of these posts :( So here goes...
Im creating a java game, which will run as....kind of a mix between a 2d game, and 3d game (no i am not insane). I dont want the original zelda look, and i dont want the first person shooter look, I want my character to be viewed from an angle, like tibia - if anyone has ever played that. And I also want to leave open the door to changing the view within the game. I figured I can just get my graphics friends to draw things in 3-d, (draw a house [draw the 4 sides and the roof]), and then somehow skew these images to accomodate for a different view.
I am more than willing to code some kind of graphics engine if what I need is not available, I have looked at a couple and found no such luck.
So what is the most efficient way to create this game? By just sortof getting all the graphics to be from a certain percpective, and then somehow modifying them with java.....
or by using some kind of graphics engine that allows me to change views? If so any recomendations?

you don't need to do any skewing. Here's what I'd do. I'd store all the tile information in a matrix (Object[][]) with a custom tile class that has the information it needs to retrieve its appropriate image, and certain game related data like slow down factor when a person walks over a certain type of tile, and whether it can be collided with. I'd draw them based on however you decide to angle your tiles. But the important part is you go in this order:
[0, 0], [0, 1], [1, 0], [0, 2], [1, 1], [2, 0], etc., etc....
The idea is if you're turning the floor 45 degrees clockwise, to give the correct illusion of depth, you'll want to draw the furthest back tile first, and the furthest tile forward last. Whether you start on the left or right depends on what angle you decide to work with. At a 45 degree angle, it obviously doesn't matter whether you start on the left or right. But if you guess wrong with your rendering, it will show because tiles that are closer to the "camera" will be overlapped by tiles further from the "camera".

}horizontalSpacing and verticalSpacing will be determined by the angle of your tiles. Set those to match however you make your art.
Drawing moving sprites will be a bit trickier because you'll have to decide which set of axes to follow... meaning, do you follow the axes of the screen, or the axes of your "rotated world." Give that some thought and once you understand what's happening with the perspective here you'll be able to see which is easiest.
So there's your engine ;)
Now, as for the art itself, make them in png format, so that you can have the base of your images be diamond shape, but of course tiles for players and walls and stuff will extend above that diamond. Just don't let them get below the base of their diamond otherwise the tile that gets drawn below them will cut them off. And you don't want a character's feet cut off by the "floor" as he runs ;)
For your final question, don't let java skew the sprite. The only possible way to make it decent is if when you pick an angle, a 3D render takes your 3D world and it's 3D models and re-renders them at that angle; skewing is simply not capable of creating that illusion. The closest you could get is to simply squish the hight of your art to give the illusion that the camera is moving up, but since you can't expose things higher, like the top of your character's head (since the data doesn't exist in the "lower" version), it will be obviously funny looking.

VpnService provided by Android SDK ?

Creating a recovery disk for windows 8

need to create a recovery disk for windows 8, on HP Pavilion g6-2238dx Notebook PC...getting error message because I unintentionally deleted part of the program... now it won't boot up... I get to a message that says...Windows restarted Unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows install cannot proceed, click ok . When I do that the program restarts... it repeats the process over and over... Any Suggestions?

Try tapping away at the F11 key immediately after powering on the laptop to get into HP Recovery Manager which can be used to do a System Recovery back to Factory settings.

Somehow when purchasing a Java Developer for Windows CD it always gives a web page with an error. Is there a way to avoid this error, or is there a phone number I can call to make that purchase?

Basically you have a 99.9 percent Window's install so any Windows software issues are Microsoft problems.
The only thing I can think of is the Microsoft servers were down briefly for maintenance or problems or maybe had a heavy load. If you were using the Auto update try going to the web site directly as they should be on another server.
You might also try the Microsoft Window XP forums and see what you can find. Maybe search for: "Security Update stalls"?
From what I've read just turning virus protection off doesn't work sometimes, you may have to UN-install it to get it to work.
"Permissions" pertains to MAC SOFTWARE only. 3rd party software or Windows files are NOT affected at all by running permissions. Besides, it will only work on a HD with a Mac operating system anyway. You can't even select the Window partition in permissions to try it anyway.

How to Create Roaming Profile(s) For Windows Workgroups

This Tutorial Shows how to create roaming profile(s) for Windows Workgroups.
Here are the steps in order to do this:
On the host PC:
1. Goto 'Folder Options'>'View' and un-tick 'Use Simple File Sharing'.
2. Goto Network Connections and right click on the 'Local Area Connection' (Ethernet recommended)
3. Goto Properties>General, and tick 'File and Printer Sharing'.
Click Apply + Ok.
4. Goto Control Panel>User Accounts, add a new user.
5. Logon to this user, and open the profile folder properties.
5b. Share this folder.
6. Make the Share permissions so that 'everyone' has: Full Control, Read, Change.
Click Apply + Ok.
7. Click on 'Caching' and disable Caching for this Share.
Click Ok.
8. Now goto the 'Security' tab and give 'Administrator' and 'SYSTEM' 'Full Control'.
Click Apply + Ok.
On the remote PC(s):
1. Make the same User as on the Host.
1b.Logon to the account and log back out again. Delete the profile folder from 'Documents and Settings'.
3. Give 'SYSTEM': 'Read','Read and Execute','List Folder Contents' to the 'Administrators' Profile
4. Type 'lusrmgr.msc' into run, goto: 'Users', double click on the new user and goto the 'Profile' tab.
4b. In the 'Profile Path' box, type \\hostPCname\ProfileName.
Click Apply + Ok
*Note* Replace the \\path\ accordingly to what names are on your Host PC.
5. Goto regedit>HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion. Double click
on 'ProfileList'.
Find which key is for the new user. (Example S-1-5-21-58435627-18431725-18026167-1003)
6. Right click that key and goto: 'Permissions' and give 'SYSTEM' 'read'.
*Note* Once you logon to the roaming profile from the remote PC for the first time you can undo this step.
7. goto GPEdit>Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/User Profiles:
Enable these settings:
'Do not check for user ownership of roaming profile folders'
'Delete cached copies of roaming profiles'
'Log users off when roaming profile fails'
"Add the Administrators security group to roaming profiles'
'Prevent roaming profile changes from propagating to the server'
7b. Make 'Timeout for dialog boxes' '1' (seconds)
8. goto: Computer Configuration/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Options:
Make 'Number of previous logons to cache (if server is unavailable) '0'
Now you're ready to login to the Profile on the remote PC.
*Note* Sometimes, when windows loads it takes a minute for the profile folder to become shared again.

I agree. In my opinion Sun has done a horrible job documenting all this madness for the average developer just starting out with this stuff. There is the CLDC, J2ME, Personal Java, J2ME-WTK, MIDP, MIDP-FCS ... maddness. Anyway after sorting through it all for a few days, I think the answer to your question you will need to use Personal Java for WinCE and the Sharp Zaurus, and MIDP for PalmOS for the palm. Jeode seems to be the most common and best Personal Java implementation and it is basically the JDK1.2.2 (or is it 1.1.8) that is designed to run on WinCE and Embeddix (such as Lineo on the Zaurus). You program it just like you would a 1.1.8 application and then you can test it by running pjava.exe which is included in the personal java 3.1 download from Sun. There is also a program called JavaCheck that will ensure that your app will run properly in PersonalJava. As for the Palm, MIDP for PalmOS is a 574K program that installs on your palm device. You then use the J2ME-WTK (wireless toolkit) to build a JAR/JAD file and you use the MIDP API to write the code.

I am an eclipse user that is looking at studio creator 2 and was wondering if I could create a java app for my palm zire 71. I have read alot about no floating point support in midp... is that true for java on the palm? If so, how does one calculate with floats and doubles to do sqrt functions etc?

I looked at netbeans and it does not support floating points in midlets. Not good for palm app if no floating point ability. J2ME supports floating point but in netbeans... is uses midlets and there are no floating points. Now what does one do? Not that dreaded C++

Java SDK for windows 3.1

I have an old 486 in my room. The computer that has the SDK is out where my parents can see me when I'm doing my late night programming. I want to be able to put the java SDK on my Packard Bell 486 running windows 98. I searched and searched and searched some more off of google for a Java SDK for windows 3.1. The only thing i can find is IBM's program which they no longer service or even give you links to download their past versions. I am wondering if any of you guys know of any java SDK that will work on my 486 with windows 3.1.

Developing Java Applications for Windows CE

I hope this sub forum is right. So I must develop a Java Application for Windows CE. I read something about J2ME, but I think this is only for Mobilephone and Windows CE supports AWT. So I tried just some simple forms with J2ME.
Can anybody tell me how I develop java Applications for Windows CE? Can I use Eclipse or must I use another IDE?
Realy I developed Swing 5-6 Month but I have no idea how I develop Java Applications for Windows CE.

The MIDP for Palm OS 1.0 requires Palm OS v3.5 or higher to run. According to your error message, the emulator is not running v3.5 or higher. Try to get hold of a ROM image with a later version. I've run it with v4.0 of the OS and it works.

Well I'm not to sure by what you mean "Which games run on Mac". There are not many that run on Mac that are that great although there are a few. Mostly for any great games you would need to run Boot Camp. Keep in mind though that you still need a version of Windows, so if you don't have one laying around somewhere you still have to buy that. As with a lot of software, it depends on the version of Word, and what features the author used.
Technically, Office 2010 for Windows and 2011 for Mac are supposed to be feature compatible. As are Office 2007 for Windows, and 2008 for Mac.
However, if a person using Office 2010 / 2011 used a feature that only exists in that version and sends the file to someone using Office 2007 / 2008, they would very likely have trouble opening the file, or having it display as intended.

Java class for windows, unix?

If I create Java class using JDK for windows, can the class be used in Unix environment, like HP-UNIX, SunSolaris?

and another issue with files and ms windows vs. *nix is taht, while some versions of windows forgive you if you leave files open after you have stoped dealing with them, unix like systems woun't forgive such things and you will run out of file pointers and... well. that's bad...
