Creating a montage

hello all-
i've been recording a podcast in garageband, and now that our season is over, i'm trying to create a 4-minute (or so) montage of very short clips from 20 podcasts, with music behind them.
basically, i've been grabbing the clips from the orginal podcast files (which are saved as garageband songs), copying them into a separate track, joining all the clips, copy and pasting the joined region into the montage file, deconstructing the joined region in the montage file, and arranging the clips.
this is a pretty unwieldy process and i'm hoping someone here (who knows way more about garageband than i do) can suggest a better process.
i guess i'm mostly hampered by the fact that you can only have one file open at a time. it would be much easier to just copy and paste between files. i understand there's nothing i can do about that.
thank you in advance for any suggestions.

i'm not sure i quite follow your workflow, but i can tell you how i'd do it:
i'd open each podcast from which i wanted a clip/clips and export it/them, uncompressed:

This FAQ entry also offers a Minute GarageBand video tutorial
(Let the page FULLY load. The link to your answer is at the top of your screen)
then i'd drag and drop them into a new project and arrange them as needed

  • 3D photo merge/montage app?

    Hi,
I was recently on holiday and while in a beautiful old building saw a man taking photos on his iPad 2, the app he was using then merged them/created a montage which replicated the inside of this building in 3D, it looked incredible and gave a real sense of the experience and I would really like to find out what the app was!!! I should have asked him then and there but I doubt we would have spoken the same language, and I was a coward! Though this didn't stop me from standing behind him for two minutes whilst he did it...
Much fruitless google searching has occured but I still haven't found the right one.
If anyone has any ideas that would be fantastic!
    Thanks very much, Miriam

Thank you for the advice. I am rendering fields or at least I believe I am. As I posted, AE is completely new to me and there seems to be a lot of ways to output the project. I have tried using templates from the render and output modules as well just exporting a movie using quick time with various codecs. All produce a shutter effect to some degree when panning horizontally. AVI files seem to render horribly from AE.
Crazy thing is that zoom in and out movements as well as some horizontal with zoom movement look beautiful. Only a horizontal pan is affected. It looks better when the camera is back further showing a wider view of the photo. Ultimately this is what I did along with some subtle curves as Mylenium suggested and the result was not perfect but acceptable.
The client loves the end result and I guess thats all that matters. Now that I have opened "Pandoras Box" and have done my first project in AE I will be devoting more time to becoming more proficient. I have owned various versions of AE from as far back as 4.0 but never got past opening the program. With so many other day to day tasks to tend to the learning curve always seemed to great. I now see it is worth the time and effort and am excited to learn more. Thanks again!

  • Create and Save a Photo Colllage from Light Table

    Hi Everyone,
I want to create a montage of several photos that I can save as one .JPG or similar, then take and have printed as a large photo collage.
I have had limited success using Apertures Light Table feature, however cannot find a way to save the entire light table as a single image for printing.
Can anyone offer any advise on this, or perhaps suggest a different application that will do the job?
    Best Regards
    Darryn

If a PDF format works for you, then you can simply choose the light table, select FILE->PRINT LIGHT TABLE and in the window that pops up you can select SAVE AS PDF.
Then you can print that file...

  • More Themes!!! Please! I need to make photo montages

I love the themes out on iMovie 6!
I was wondering if it is possible to create photo montages of 50 photos by adding the same theme with different photos over and over again? and even better where can I get more of these as I find them to be very cool, stylish and creative.
Please, all comments and third party links are welcome.
    Thank you.

There arn't any- Apple have only just added support for these theme's. You can always use 3d backgrounds and make your own title sequences- goto www.3dbackgrounds.com. They give away one free animation per month- I have been collecting freebees for 2-3 years!

  • Photo Montage - Blending Multiple Photos

I want to create a montage of 6-8 photos where each has their edges or select areas individually adjusted for transparency. In Photoshop, one creates a mask for each photo and, using the left or right mouse button, adjusts the opacity of the image up or down with each mouse stroke by using a feathered brush tool on the mask layer.
How is this accomplished, if at all, in PE6?

    Clifford,
To elaborate on Charles' method, here's an example.
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1N6ADLkHyMdlLjRmHJ1001s2u4W
I created an image consisting of 2 flowers on separate layers.
Set the Foreground/Background colors to default back/white.
    For the top flower:
    1. Added a Levels adjustment layer (no adjustment, just click OK) below the Picture 1 layer and grouped the 2 layers.
    2. Activated the Levels layer and with the Elliptical Marquee drew out an oval filling a portion of the flower.
    3. Inverted the selection (Select>Inverse) and feathered the selection 40 px.
    4. Filled the selection with black.
For the bottom flower I used a different technique:
    1. Deleted the previous selection.
    2. Added and grouped a Levels layer and filled with black (same as was done for the top flower).
    3. Activated the Brush tool with a large soft brush size (300 px).
    4. Painted with white to reveal the flower.
The portion of the flowers revealed is defined by the mask in the Levels layers. To reveal more portions of the picture paint the mask with white. To remove portions of the picture paint with black. Use a large soft brush to preserve the feathering. You can type "x" to toggle between black & white.

  • Why is running Elements 8 slower on Windows 7 than XP?

I am afraid this is query is a bit long, but I have tried to provide all the
    info I can ....
    THE PROBLEM
My old PC died, so I bought a new PC to improve my video processing speed, and also move off Windows XP.
    - I installed the same copy of Adobe Premiere Elements 8 on both PCs.
    - I applied no updates (on either machine) as the original versions works fine (on XP - why fix something that isn't broken)
    - I changed the preferences to stop background rendering (due to data volumes -
    same on old PC).
    - I then copied the project file (.prel) from the old PC to the new.
Having set up the new PC, I carried out a benchmark test in Premiere Elements 8.0 converting the same 4-hour long HD file from M2TS to MPG on both PCs.
It was 4 times slower on the new PC !!!!
I then tried out another video conversion program (to demux MPG files so that they can be edited in Premiere) and that was 30% faster on the new PC.
In the Premier test the original file was on a 6GB/s 3TB disk drive with the output file on a 6GB/s 2TB drive (which also has the Windows system and Adobe cache files).
    -  Both processes ran identically without errors.  In fact the output files were almost identical (one was 12 685 358 KB, the other 12 658 402 KB). I ran MediaInfo on both output files and it summarised them as identical in terms of codecs, size, etc, etc.
    - On the old PC, CPU utilisation is usually around 90%, on the new one it is closer to 50%.
    - Disk and memory utilisation are not limiting factors.
Can anyone help me finding out why the new PC is so much slower than the old?

    Windows 7 Pro
    BACKGROUND
I have a very specific use of Premiere (for research purposes):
    - I have 2 HD video Sony XDR160E camcorders monitoring bird nests 13 hours per day.
    - Each camera generates 160 GB data per day on its internal HD.
    - File sizes range from 20 GB (smallest) to 160 GB.
    - I download the files from the camera to disk using the cameras download facility.
It is then that I use Premiere.
    - I open a project that has the exact specs of the camera's output.
    - I open the M2TS file in Premiere, drag it onto the sceneline.
    - I do not view the file but immediately share it using a preset that matches the requirements of my MVIX PVR.
This bit is not relevant to the problem per se, but provides background info:
    - I then copy the file onto the PVR decoder.
    - I view the file through an MVIX PVR which allows viewing at 32x speed with minimal data loss.
    - I will then identify activity periods (which may be only 5 minutes per day).
    - I use the camera's editor to extract the relevant clips keeping all the camera metadata intact.
    - After that I may use Premiere again to create illustrative montages.
    CONCLUSION
Does anyone have a clue as to why I am having this problem? (it is not an error per se)
    - The obvious differences are the operating system, the graphics card and the disk allocation unit size
    - It may well NOT be a Premiere issue, it may be Windows 7 Pro that is causing the problem.
    - I assume that the graphics card is irrelevant as I never actually view the video in Premiere (in this scenario)
    - Could it be that Adobe cannot handle the 64k disk allocation size?
    - Is there some special setting in Windows 7 that I need to enable that wasn't required in Windows XP?
    - Is there some special setting in Adobe that I need to enable when running in a 64-bit environment?
Or is there something else I am missing?
Any help would be really appreciated - it could take weeks to try out all the various combinations to identify the problem.
    Giles

    Steve
Thanx for your insights.  I do not have the disks partitioned (except the system disk, I always like to keep the system files separated from the 'user' files to make backups simpler).
I suspect you are right that upgrading to 11 would speed things up, but I still suspect there is something more fundamentally wrong in my Windows 7 set-up - my guess is that upgrading to 11 might double the speed of processing - but that would still leave it 50% slower than on the old machine.
My first step will be to run all the patches on 8 - but not for a few days. We are expecting 3 or 4 days of thunderstorms (normal for this time of year in South Africa) and my UPS hasn't the battery life to keep going during an upgrade cycle.

  • Help with Stills and Motion

I just came over to Mac and took advantage of the promotion on FCE. I am a still photographer and have found that putting my pictures into a video is much more impressive than handing someone a pile of photos. What I need seems to be relatively simple, but I'm about to tear my hair out: Using only still photos, I would like to cross fade into each one while each one has some movement (within the frame). In other words, gentle pans and zooms with slow crossfades. I have several working, but I just can't seem to repeat the procedure and I'm spending way too much time trying to get each to work properly. I've tried putting on the same video track and on two tracks and can't get it down to a routine. I would really appreciate someone giving me a tip on finding the trick to getting this down. Yes, I've read the manual and dug into the forum. Appreciate any help.
    Thanks
    mp

I recently finished a project with nearly 200 still photos in FCE HD. While iPhoto and iMovie can create photo montages, iPhotos applies the same transition and duration to each photo. iMovie allows you to vary the transitions and duration of each photo, and switch up the music.
What i've done before was lay down my music on a seperate track. Then, add the photos into the timeline, changing on the beats or whatever. Let the flow of the music determine the duration of each photo.
You'll have more control in FCE HD, but iMovie will do the trick. Either way, send the finished project to iDVD for burning.
    Best of luck!
    Nathan.

When I view my Burned DVD on my tv my Music Video title is cut-off and my subtitles are cut off. How do I get it so they are shown on my tv. Also the clips are in widescreen mode. Can I format them to be in full screen mode?
    Thanks

    Guys--
It's not a magic button that pushes everthing where it needs to be....
Read Bear's post again--As long as you put everything inside the "safe area guideline box", it shouldn't be cut off when shown on most TVs. Anything outside the box is subject to T.V. overscan.
In addition, when you're creating photo montages, titles and graphics within your projects, etc., make sure you take this into account. Many of heads, bodies, graphics, titles have been cut off because people don't account for TV overscan.
    Hope this helps.

  • AVCHD in Premiere Pro CS 5 - exporting file type questions

Firstly, this is my first post on here, so apologies if I'm breaking any kind of etiquette. Also, I'm not a very technical person and would appreciate any comments or advice to be in layman's terms!
So, I film and edit weddings as part of a small company. I've recently had my camera and editing system upgraded to a Sony NXcam and Premiere Pro CS5 and I'm having a little trouble getting used to the new file types and settings (previously used miniDV tapes in SD with a Canon XL2 in an older version of Premiere).
My pc handles the AVCHD footage fine but the way that I edit means that I'll want to export a sequence of edited clips as one long clip, and then re-import it. For example, I'm editing the wedding ceremony from footage from two cameras - I'm going to edit the full version of the ceremony and then I'm also going to edit it down into a version that is a highlights montage in slo-motion to music. The way I do this is once I'm happy with the full version of the ceremony I'll export it and then re-import it so it's one long clip I can play with rather than two sets of footage chopped up on a sequence. So I can alter the speed of this new long clip, and then chop it up and stick in some dissolves to put together the montage. Then I use this montage in the middle of my final film, between the preparations and the reception. The full, edited version of the ceremony is used as an extra on the DVD.
Previously this was fairly straight forward. I was always working with footage in 16:9 and could export it as an avi file, then re-import that avi file with no problems - presto; the exact same-looking footage as I was previously working with.
Now I'm editing with avchd mts footage (1920x1080 - 25p - square pixels?). Naturally, if I export it as a 16:9 avi and re-import it, the aspect ratio and frame size is all wrong for the project sequence.
I just want to know what the best file format and settings are to use to export footage that will match up.  There is no option that I can see to export edited footage as mts files. There is a long list of file types, most of which I don't recognise or know anything about and have never needed to use in the past.
Sorry if this is a silly question, I've tried searching for "working with AVCHD in premiere pro cs5" in google and not been able to find anything that can help me on there, so I thought I'd try a forum like this.
    Cheers
    Adam

I think we may have a slight miscommunication.  This is the way that I interpreted your original post.
Lets say you shot the Smith/Jones wedding this past weekend.  You start a new project and have a Service Sequence and a Reception Sequence.  You finish editing both the service and reception and just a standard full length video.  Now you want to create a montage with clips from both the service and reception.  In this montage you will have different effects like Black and white, Slo Mo, blurs, etc.  So what you do is export the service and reception and then import those two files (or one long one) and then cut that apart and add your music and effects to make your montage.  Is that correct?
The way that I do it works the exact same way except that you skip the export part.
When I edit a wedding I generally have 4 sequences when I am finished.  I have a Pre Wedding montage, service, reception, and ending highlights.  The Pre Wedding montage is just made up of shots from before the service (bride and bridesmaids getting ready, shots of the venu, groom and groomsmen and so on).  Then I have a full edit of the service and a full edit of the reception.  After I am finished with those 3 sequences I start working on the ending highlight collage.  I make a new sequence for the collage then I go to my bin and drag the "Service Sequence" up into the preview monitor (I know in my previous post I said double click.  That does not work, because that just opens it up as a sequence.  Sorry about that).  In the preview monitor I scrub through the footage until I find a section that I want in the montage.  Then I set in and out points around that clip and drop it into my Montage timline, and what ever effects to it that I want, then move on to the next clip and do the same thing.  To me it seems that we have the same process except that you have to wait for the export (which is always going to give you a quality loss, how much of a loss depends on format and settings).
Please let me know if I have misread your process.
    Phil
