Creating A Motion Comic

Hey,
I'm currently creating a Motion Comic for my Major and looking for some tips or tutorials.
I am separating my layers in Photoshop and importing to AE, but find it hard to make the background look "flawless" with the cloning tools. I have some elements that will move across the background and reveal the cloned parts, so I wonder how the professionals do it. Looking at Motion Comics, they all look so seamlessly integrated.
Since it is my first time creating a motion comic, I will go for something simplistic.
I wish to use camera moves, zoom in/out, slight movement of foreground elements/characters across scene as well as perhaps adding a short hand drawn dance sequence. There will be 2 songs and some SFX added lastly.
However, I think it may be too difficult to do the dance animation in the short amount of time I have, so considering drawing key frames of the dance and freeze them while I zoom in or something.
Any help would be greatly appreciated:)
Thanks.

Thanks for your reply!
Yes that's what I've been doing so far. I figured later that it would probably have been easier to create the layers digitally.
I am a fan of traditional means though, so wanted to give myself a challenge.
I tried the clone tools, healing brush and content aware fill with varying results. Perhaps I just have to switch between them all?
Here's a few examples. It's my first attempt at a comic so not superb..
1)Test Page Layout- The idea will be to move from frame to frame as you would in a comic book, but with camera movement etc.
2) In this panel I wish to move the glass and hand upwards as if the character's lifting it.
3) Here I want to add a Camera pan to left with a 2.5d effect on the character and perhaps slight
movement of background characters.
My story focuses on two characters mostly and is a romantic story with emphasis on motion, gestures, dance and how it can communicate a message.
Thanks for having a look!

  • How to go about creating a Motion Comic?

What would i need to learn specifically from Photoshop and After Effects? I am a newbie in both Photoshop and After Effects and I am looking into learning the basics of both of them..but once I learn the basics is their anything advanced i need to know to achieve good quality camera movements/effects? I read a comment about parallaxing in AE and the clone tool in Photoshop etc. Also can Google sketchup be used to create environments to go into AE? Thank you to any comments.

If you are completely new to Photoshop and After Effects and you want to create something like the video you pointed us to in your second post and you already possess the illustrating skills (ability to draw one of those scenes with a pencil) then I would guess that you need about 4 to 6 months of training on a part time basis or a full month of 10 hour days. There are dozens of techniques in each frame from color correction to puppet pin and hand drawn animation.
I would suggest a Lynda.com subscription and then pick the tutorials that look like they cover some of the techniques you will need to use. Don't expect to be successful if you do not start with the basic workflow and explanation of the UI. There is no single plug-in or effect that will do what you want to do with the click of a mouse.
I would also go to a book store and look at and buy any books you can find on the techniques of animation and illustration. Reproducing your sample video is not a weekend project that can be covered in a couple of simple tutorials.

  • How do I create 2 motion tweens for one line of text?  the text needs to "fly-in-right", I can do that,

how do I create 2 motion tweens for one line of text?  the text needs to "fly-in-right", I can do that, then it needs to "fly-out-bottom" again, I can do that, but not on the same line of text...any ideas...

    my question
1- there is any way to assign the Fetch process to specific region so the process take all item in these region only.
2- how can create manual process to fetch row into specific items in page ( i tray these code
    SELECT col1, col2, col3 ....
    INTO :P1_ITEM1, :P1_ITEM, :P1_ITEM...
    FROM table
WHERE id = :P_id ) but no data retrieve .
I do not think that it is possible to have more than one Automated Row Fetch process in a given page. See the thread:
ORA-01403: no data found : Unable to fetch row multiple automated row fetch
On your second question, the manual process should work provided:
P_ID has a value when the process executes. You can do it this way:
    i. Make this process as a on-load After/Before header process
ii. Make sure that P_ID page item has value when the process executes (set it from another page or before the pl/sql process executes)

  • Not Being Allowed To Watch My Motion Comic Purchases

I Purchased a new imac (because my laptop died) and since then I haven't been able to watch ANY of my motion comic purchases. Some have even been lost. I also would like to use my itunes library on my non admin user profile. I need all the help I can get regarding this problem.
If it means anything, my Itunes library is on an external drive

My understanding is that VGA generally does not support HDCP (and it's not an Apple issue as such). If your TV has a DVI input, try that. Or if it has an HDMI input, try that using a DVI to HDMI cable.

  • Why can't I create a motion tween

I've been following the tutorials given after downloading the program. However, on step " Fine-tune the Characters Movement", it tells me to create a motion tween. But the option to create one isn't there. Any advice would be welcomed.

    Hi,
Right-Click on the object to invoke context menu, and you will find "create motion tween" option. If the object in context is not a symbol it will pop up a dialog to confirm if you want the object to be converted to symbol, press Ok as motion tweens are applicable for symbol and text objects only. You will see , as the motion tween is created play head in the timeline jumps to 24th frame there by adding the tween. In the destination frame ,make changes to the object like translate ,rotate etc and press enter to see the preview of the tween.
    Thanks,

  • Hello  Every time I create a motion menu the play buttons have a fuzzy outl

    Hello
Every time I create a motion menu the play buttons have a fuzzy outline. I really don't like this and would love to know how to avoid it as it looks really bad and not crisp.
    Here's how i do it:
    1) I create the motion menu in AEX and add in the button here. I have the button coming in about 5 seconds after the start to give a delayed effect and this will therefore be the loop point I set in DVDSP.
    2) I then export out a Photoshop layers file from AEX and then bring this file into Photoshop to make the overlay. I'm not sure if I'm doing this step correctly as I then go Image/adjustments/levels and make the play button black
    3) I then make the menu an .m2v and bring this and the overlay .jpg file into DVDSP.
    4) When I select the play button the edges go fuzzy. This particular PLAY button was the text PLAY in white, with a black outline. Maybe this black outline had something to do with it?? I've also had heart shaped buttons for example and this does the same thing.
    Hope you can help.
    Many thanks, Margie

One thing that could help is not using a .jpg which is compressed. A .tif may work better (to some degree).
Not sure if you are using text highlights or something else when you mention you make the button black. Larger text (20pt plus, Sans Serif) can often help. Part of it also may be the selection process of what you are changing. Sounds like you are sending out the highlights as a seperate layer by itself. If so you do not not to switch it to Black, depending on the color you can map it out in DVD SP.
Another thing is that if the highlight is in the motion menu (unhighlighted) the highlighing may be slightly off of the underlying item making it a bit fuzzier. Could also be colors.
On pt 4, not sure if you mean select as "I pressed the button for the action" or as just moving to the button. If the former, then there can be a slight shift as the DVD itself moves to different place. Feathering the black edges may also help....

  • What programs/functions do I need to master in order to create stop motion animation?

    Hi,
Im just starting a new job, and will be creating a handful of films for my new employer.
I want to create something interesting, and have been leaning towards stop motion animation.
What initially inspired me was this music video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfcHq0hhFWg
To me, it looks like a bunch of stop motion ( ex; the paper balls and hand colored individual frames of the guy playing guitar), paired with some digital animation (walruses). Please correct me if I am wrong about this.
So - to focus my question:
    1) What program does one use to play all the individual pictures taken to create the stop motion animation? In other words, once I have shot all the individual pictures of the objects I want to animate, and am ready to organize them and set a playback speed, what program would I use? Do most people just throw all the pictures into final cut and do it that way?? Or is there a better program?
    and
    2) How do you cut portions of pictures / drawings / frames out to allow for a deep layering effect? I figure most people take each frame and manipulate it individually using photoshop (cutting portions of an image out so something else can be seen through the void). But is there a better way??
For example, lets say I have two crecent shaped pieces of black paper, and I want them to move towards each other from the left and right sides of the screen, and eventually completely obscure whatever is going on in the background behind the paper images. First I would take a series of pictures, moving the pieces of paper in small increments, until they closed the gap and overlapped each other. From that point, I would lay down whatever video I wanted playing in the background into the timeline. Next, I would import the series of photos with the pieces of paper moving towards each other - then comes the problem. The portion of the pictures used for the animation that is NOT PAPER would be obscuring my background video. So at this point, is it easier to shoot the animation against a white background and just chroma key the white out? Or do most people cut the non paper part out using photoshop? or is there a better way?

Congratulations on the job. Not many of them out there.

Easy to search the app store, as mentioned, or just google stop motion for macintosh. Mastering the application is easy. Learning how to animate is where you need to start.

In the odlen days, we used multiplane stages. Each set of drawings was placed on a glass stage, one under the other. INcredibly fun, absurdly difficult to keep clean and properly lit. Now all of that stuff is done with alpha channels and compositing software like Motion or Afer Effects.

Umm, yes. You're only guessing. And, honestly (Did you want honesty?), your heart may be in this but you don't have much a clue. Techniques and effects (and the experience to guide the decisions to do them in camera, on the shooting stage, or in software) are not where you start animation. You start by learning how cameras work, how shutter speed and f-stop relate to ISO speed, how to shoot on-2s (or if you should), how to do eases and stretches and squishes, how to develop characterization in inanimate objects so you can invoke emotive responses from the audience, how to shoot to hooks in the soundtrack, how to plan, how to storyboard, how to budget time, how to establish and maintain quality shooting conditions, how to do animatic or rough tests, how to learn from the tests, how to have fun, how to make money, how to get it done.
This is kind of like saying you've just inherited a hundred acres and are thinking about getting into farming. You plant some seeds and do some stuff and then pick it and sell it. How hard can it be?

  • How do I create this "Motion Reel" in AE?

This may be a bit old school now but I was wondering how this video was created. I am quite sure it was done in AE but I could be wrong. First off, let me say that I have zero experience in Adobe after effects. however I am quite familiar with  Photoshop and a little of Premier so the interface is not totally foreign. I found a video on how to import layers from Photoshop and also how to put a camera on the timeline. However I was not able to get the camera to zoom through the layers and pan around like they do in this video. Any guidance would be much appreciated.
See this video as an example of what I would like to reproduce.  Dave Hill Motion Reel 2012 on Vimeo
    Many thanks,
    Houston

Rick, thank you for the light explanation but as I mentioned in the post, I know nothing about AE. So when you say stack them in 3-D space are you talking about the 3-D column in the composition panel?
I am definitely using a psd source file. Is this not the RIGHT KIND OF IMAGE?  One exactly like the video. I am wanting to show the layers in Photoshop in a 3-D fashion just like the video. I found this video but when I do what it says I am not really seeing the effects he is seeing. My layers begin to overlap each other as the camera moves left to right. That is not what I want. in the video example, he was somehow able to spread apart his layers without the images scaling. When I try to move one ov my layers away from the other in 3D space, it begins to scale. I realize you may want this in 3D, but not this pseudo 3D effect or am I completely wrong.
    Many thanks,

  • How to create a motion tween?? :S

    Hii
I know it is very easy. Right click>create motion tween>drag to where I would like the text/object to move
    BUT
Sometimes it doesn't seem to work when i drag the text. It will work the first time and for the second text on the frame it won't work. I don't why .....any help???
Can someone tell me the requirements of a motion tween when it comes to text on a single layer  in the same frame.
    Thanks

You can only tween one object in a layer, so if you are trying to tween more than one it will break the tween.  Keep your different textfields on different layers.

  • Upgrade to Final Cut 10.0.7 destroyed my generators created in Motion that include drop zones. Anyone experienced the same problem ?

In Motion 5 I created generators that included a drop zone. The objective it to bring them into Final Cut and insert into the drop zone a clip of the same duration.
In FCX 10.0.6 I used to bring a clip to the time line and re size it to the exact duration of my generator. Then I bring the generator to the time line and selected the generator, click in the drop zone of the published parameters menu and select this clip I wanted to insert. The result was the generator using my clip and the clip playing during all the duration of the generator with the generator effect.
Now, with 10.0.7 I can’t make that work. When I click in the clip I would like to import into the drop zone, the result is that there’s just a frozen image of the clip (in the same place I clicked with the mouse)
Is this a known problem of 10.0.7. It used to work well in 10.0.6
    Thanks for your help !

I can't see that the update would have any effect on custom generators as they are housed separately from FCP X.
Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.
There is absolutely no danger in trashing preferences and you can do it as often as you like.
The preferences are kept separately from FCP X and if there aren't any when FCP X opens it automatically creates new ones  .  .  .  instantly.

  • Creating a motion tween with less frames on the timeline

    Hi,
By default when I create a new motion tween, it automatically comprises all frames on the layer.  I want only a 72-frame tween, not a 350-frame tween.
    Any idea?
    Ronald

I did know about suggestion #1 (I just thought it was too much work, especially
since I had to move the 72-frame tween back to the end, on frame 350).
As for suggestion #2, I learned that I could split a tween.  Interesting!
    Thanks!

  • Creating travelling motion effect on a picture

    Hi,
For a school assignment I have designed a map in Adobe Illustrator. I would like to create a movie with a 'camera travelling effect' on the map, similar to the one you can see on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPM1OYKb1Qs
Can someone help me pointing to the right software package to choose and how to do this ?
    Thanks in advance.

the map-animation in your linked demo is 3D .. so, your 'painting' is just the beginning.. you need some 3D-software, which allows creation of such dimensional pictures + socalled texture-mapping (imagine, you sculpt with plaster and project your painting on it) ..
the free, but really hard to learn solution is blender.org ... software package, which allows to create 'landscapes' with grey-maps and which allows texture-mapping..
for sure, there're tons of commercial solutions, very soon going beyond the 1k$ barrier.. I used for many years CARRARA BASIC (<100$), I'm not sure, wether it's on sale for actual hard/software.. tools as Motion, After Effects, Maya or Cinema 4D are probably way above budget ..

  • Creating slow motion footage

I'm going to need to create some slow motion footage and it seems like I can do this with FCP under the Speed option. If so, just curious why people buy camera specifically to do super slow motion. Are there quality issues when doing it in FCP?
    Thanks.

When you take 30fps...and slow it down to 50%, half speed...what you get is 1 frame repeated...it shows up twice.  So the action is not all that smooth.  Go to 33% and that 1 frame is repeated 3 times.
Now...take a camera that shoots 60fps, slow that down to 30fps, you get frame for frame...1 frame not repeated, so that 1 second shot at 60fps is now 2 seconds, and smooth.  Slow that down to 24fps...that's even slower.  Shoot 120fps...that's even slower and smoother.
So, if you want slow motion, you need to shoot more fps.

  • How can I create responsive motion path animation

I have an animate file that contains many amimations and one motion path animation.  All animation elements of the animate file are responsive with the exception of the motion path animation which is not for some reason.  Why does the motion path animation not repsonsive even though it is L, T, W, H coordinates are set as percentages?
    Thanks

    Hi, evetsrelfel-
There's no way to make motion paths responsive at the moment - we limit them to pixel-based animations.
    Thanks,
