Creating a new document from a sublayer?

Question

I wonder if this is possible in Illustrator CS4? I want to copy a sublayer from a current document and paste it to a new layer, and save it as SVG. Does anyone knows how to 'tell' Illustrator to "select" a sublayer?

Hi, here's how to do it with VBA.
// select an element in the desired sublayer before runing the procedure
Sub newDocFromSubLayer()
    Dim Iapp As New Illustrator.Application
    Dim Idoc As Illustrator.Document
    Dim mySubLayer As Illustrator.Layer
    Set Idoc = Iapp.ActiveDocument
    Set mySubLayer = Idoc.Selection(0).Layer
    For Each element In mySubLayer.PageItems
        element.Selected = True
    Next
    Iapp.Copy
    Set Idoc = Iapp.Documents.Add
    Idoc.Paste
    Set mySubLayer = Nothing
    Set Idoc = Nothing
    Set Iapp = Nothing
End Sub
