Creating a Non-RAC ASM 10gR2 instance in Solaris 10 (x86)

DB Version:10gR2
OS: Solaris 5.10 for x86 (Installation DVD released on June 2006)
I have decided to remove the windows installation in my old laptop.I am going to install only Solaris 10 (x86) in this to create an ASM instance.
My laptop has a single IDE Harddrive. Is it possible to create ASM slices on this ?

Bjoern, Rajesh,
Thank your both very much.
Bjoern,
I have downloaded the latest solaris 10 for x86 (sol-10-u8-ga-x86-dvd.iso) from sun/oracle website . Need to write this to a DVD and test the installation.

  • Creating Standby for RAC ASM database using RMAN

    We are having a Primary Site of 3-Node RAC ASM and we takes daily RMAN backup with the following script
    run
    allocate channel c1 device type disk format 'g:\rmanbackup\%U';
    backup database;
    backup archivelog from time 'trunc(sysdate-1)' until time 'sysdate';
    We have configured 3-Node RAC Cluster in Standby site. We have copied the rman backup folder to one of the Nodes in the Standby site.
    Request your help to restore the RMAN backup. The backup size is around 200GB. We do not know how to use DUPLICATE DUPICATE option in RMAN as if it is restoring from the Primary Location, then transferring 200GB over the network will not be possible.
    We need a solution to restore it directly from the Backup folder available in the DR Server. We are not using catalog.
    OS : Windows IA 64-bit
    RDBMS : Oracle 10.2.0.4
    Storage : ASM
    DB Nodes at Primary Site, Node1, Node2, Node3
    DB instances at primary site : ORCL1, ORCL2, ORCL3
    DB Nodes at Standby Site, Node101, Node102, Node103
    DB instances at Standby site : ORCL1, ORCL2, ORCL3
    DB Name : ORCL on both the sites.

    When you create the standby, you can use catalogued backups, stored somewhere local to your standby servers.
    For that, they need to be copied to the standby server, or taken from production there, and after restoring the standby controlfile on the standby server, use rman to catalogue the backups to be used. Then, you can use DUPLICATE... and it will be reading your local backup files.
    The directory g:\rmanbackup of your rman script is local to standby servers ?
    The docs for this have a lot of details: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/rcmbackp.htm

  • Cannot see EMC PowerPath devices from ASM instance on Solaris 10 x86

    Hello,
    I'm trying to use EMC PowerPath devices as ASM disks, but cannot see any usable disk
    from the ASM instance.
    My configuration:
    Hardware: Sun X4600M2
    Solaris 10 8/07 x86_64
    EMC PowerPath 5.0.2_b030
    Oracle 10.2.0.1.0
    The PP devices are /dev/rdsk/emcpower* which are softlinks to the correpsonding /devices/pseudo/emcp*.
    Since I know that these devices must have suitable permissions, I've set ownership and
    permission of e.g. /devices/pseudo/emcp@1:a,raw to oracle:dba and 660. The ASM instance's
    init.ora file has *.asm_diskstring='/dev/rdsk/emcpower*', so I assume it will scan all
    /dev/rdsk/emcpower* softlinks and fetch the ones with sufficient permissions. But nonetheless
    a 'select count(*) from v$asm_disk' gives me 0, i.e. nothing.
    I've just read some recommendations of using slice 6 of the disk with partition type 'usr', but
    this seems to me quite superficial. I would like to use simply slice (=partition) 0 starting from
    cylinder 1.
    I would be very glad for any solution.
    Best regards
    Udo

    Problem solved.
    After some tests with plain files instead of devices via undocumented parameter
    asmallow_only_raw_disks=false in order to check ASM functionality,
    I've finally created new node devices only for oracle (and set_asm_allow... back to true).
    original EMC PowerPath pseudo devices (e.g.):
    -bash-3.00$ ls -l /devices/pseudo/emcp@13:a,raw
    crw------- 1 root sys 215, 832 Dec 10 15:29 /devices/pseudo/emcp@13:a,raw
    corresponding new character device with proper ownership and permissions:
    -bash-3.00$ ls -l /u01/app/ora-dev/raw/emcp13a
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 215, 832 Dec 10 14:56 /u01/app/ora-dev/raw/emcp13a
    With *.asm_diskstring='/u01/app/ora-dev/raw/emcp*' in ASM-instance's init.ora,
    I was able to see the devices via select * from v$asm_disk and could create the
    ASM diskgroups.

  • Instnce name in non-RAC environment

    Hi!
    In non-RAC environment V$INSTANCE.INSTANCE_NAME does not actually displays the name of the instance,that was set in INSTANCE_NAME parameter.
    It always displays DB_NAME instead.
    Is it any way to get instance_name that has service user connected to in this environment?

  • Restore RAC database from non-RAC source - EBS R12.1.1

    We have restored (PIT) a RAC database from a non-RAC (but ASM) source and I was wondering if that was a reasonable thing to do.
    The reason I ask is that I seem to remember that in the upgrade to R12.1.1 the upgrade driver had a different list of jobs to do when the target was RAC vs when it was non-RAC... so is it possible the EBS R12.1.1 code is different for RAC (meaning we dont have the right code base in the DB since we restored a non-RAC source to a RAC destination)?
    Disclaimer - I am NOT a DBA .. just trying to identify some potential problems we are troubleshooting.
    Thanks in advance!
    EBS R12.1.1
    OEL 5
    11gR2

    We have a RMAN back up of the non-RAC database that was restored and PIT recovered on the RAC database.Is it a full database backup?
    The "code" base I am referring to is all the db stored objects for R12 EBS .. database compiled code.Restoring the RMAN backup on the target node is not enough. Have you run AutoConfig or postclone? Does your instance know that this is a a single instance and not a RAC one?
    I am nervous that there may be alternate versions of the code to run in RAC vs non-RAC .. for instance I know that some of the ASCP jobs use DBMS PIPES and that can be tricky with RAC and Concurrent Manager.. And when we did the upgrade to R12, pointing it @ RAC generated more and different jobs than when it was not pointed @ RAC .. so SOMETHING was different according to the APPS ADPATCH/ADADMIN utilities.Please explain in details what is the purpose of doing this restore and what exactly you are trying to achieve. What cloning procedure you follow to refresh the target instance?
    Thanks,
    Hussein

  • What advantages/disadv to having a none-rac db datafiles on rac clusterware

    Hello,
    We have a rac 10.2.0.3 with ocfs2 files on linux 4. We want to create a none-rac database on one of the rac nodes. The none-rac 10.2.0.4 is in its own new separate oracle home. Would it be a bad idea to use the existing ocfs2 mountpoints for the none-rac datafile locations? What would be adv/dis-adv to using ocfs2 for none-rac database files? Thank you.

    I will disagree of if a non-RAC database should use CFS or not. Since the file systems in use are clustered I see no reason to use a non-clustered file system and by using a CFS should the server the database is built on fail you can with a few minor edits start the database on the other node. If you used a traditional file system to hold the non-RAC database then its data files would not be accessible to the remaining node.
    Placing the Oracle database on CFS then starting it from another node in the advent of failure is one of the early high availability (quick recovery) methods. This kind of set up was not uncommon in the VMS (DEC) world back in the late 1980's and early 1990's.
    Also what if at a future data you determine you want to convert the database to RAC? It will be easier if the database is already on a CFS.

  • IBM's GPFS for REHL4/5 and a single instance (non RAC) 10gR2 environment

    I've looked high and low for a clear support statement of IBM's GPFS for RHEL4 or RHEL5 in a non RAC 10gR2 implementation. Does anybody have a pointer that would explain Oracle's support or lack there of?
    Thank you,
    Martha C.

    For RHEL O/S level issues, there would be no support. You would need a ULN support license for generic O/S questions and you would need to switch to OEL.
    For non-ULN customers with a database CSI, O/S level support is provided only on issues specifically related to the OCFS2 or ASMLib packages; for generic O/S questions you would need a ULN license.
    Perhaps folk over in the DATABASE forum could clarify Oracle's RDBMS support policy for this environment, but succinctly: no O/S support without a ULN license, subject to directly-related OCFS2/ASMLib issues.

  • Can I use data guard to create a RAC standby database for a non RAC primary

    Hi,
    we need to RAC our production database but the normal methods will mean a long outage. It is possible to create a standby as a single node RAC database and when ready do a graceful failover to the standby database and open it for business. The next step would be to create another RAC node from this on the original server.
    servers are already cluster aware, using ASM etc
    Oracle 10.2

    Yes, you will be able to setup RAC stnadby for a non-RAC Primary. For primary it just needs a available destination for redo shipping it doesn't matter whether it's RAC enabled or not. And ofcourse you are using 10.2 anyway only one node will be running MRP and that is too in standby mount mode.
    However since you have are using You may follow below sequence.
    1. Setup a new standby as RAC enabled.
    2. Perform a switchover.
    3. Shutdown the Old primary (which is standby now).
    4. Install CRS and RDBMS on the old primary and it's new node.
    5. Modify the cluster_database=TRUE and cluster_database_instances=<required number of instances>.
        With above modification mount the standby database in standby mode and start MRP.
    6. Introduce the database and instances to the OCR using SRVCTL add command.
    7. Once you your database is synchronized with Primary do a switchover.
    9. Now you can repeat step 3 to 6 on the other site too.   <- if you need your secondary site to be RAC enabled too
    10. Finally both the sites should be RAC enabled.
    Hope this is helpful!!!

  • How to restore (not duplicate) DB from RAC ASM to non ASM

    Hello everybody,
    i am trying to recover db from RAC+ASM to non ASM no RAC node. I am running Oracle 10g (10.2.0.4) on Win2003 Server. I have functional backup from my prod system.
    Here are my steps:
    *1. On prod server i make backup running this script in RMAN*
    configure channel device type 'SBT_TAPE' parms'SBT_LIBRARY=oracle.disksbt,ENV=(BACKUP_DIR=e:\backup)';
    RUN {
    backup device type SBT_TAPE database tag zal20081129;
    SQL 'alter system archive log current';
    backup device type SBT_TAPE archivelog ALL tag zal20081129;
    *2. I prepared clon instance on another server (The same Oracle version) and start it to nomount mode.*
    *3. I copied the backup from prod server to clon server to exactly the same path. (e:\backup)*
    *4. I connect to RMAN on my new node and I use the DBID parameter and I restore controlfile.*
    rman
    connect target /
    set DBID 3079749916
    startup nomount
    run {
    allocate CHANNEL CTAPE DEVICE TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' PARMS'SBT_LIBRARY=oracle.disksbt,ENV=(BACKUP_DIR=f:\backup)';
    allocate channel CDISK DEVICE TYPE DISK;
    restore controlfile from 'f:\backup\78k91lrn_1_1';
    alter database mount;
    *5.Then I check the backup, crosscheck etc.*

    So obviouslly database wants to open online logs in the path like ASM. Which is wrong. What should I do to tell database to open it according to init.ora parameters
    *.db_create_file_dest='e:\oradata\agost'
    *.db_create_online_log_dest_1='e:\oradata\agost'
    Any suggestions???
    Thanks

    Hi,
    thanks for you quick answer. But I do restore to the local file system, even if the log says:
    restoring datafile 00001 to +DATA/agost/datafile/system.272.668509367
    restoring datafile 00002 to +DATA/agost/datafile/undotbs1.273.668509387 .....
    all the datafiles are correctly restored. I think oracle uses the parameter db_create_file_dest and creates the files there.
    I tried also the script with SET NEW NAME:
    run {
    Set newname for datafile 1 to 'e:\oradata\AGOST\system.272.668509367';

  • Moving RAC/ASM to single-node non-rac SET NEWNAME not working

    Good morning,
    I'm trying to restore a rac/asm database to a non-rac environment to simulate disaster recovery under worst-case circumstances.
    Here is as faras I have been able to get
    1) Restored pfile
    2) modified pfile to remove references to RAC settings (note, did not set db_file_create_dest, db_file_name_convert, etc)
    3) Restored controlfile successfully
    4) Mounted database
    At this time I run the following rman script which covers all temp and datafiles (there's some skipped numbers where datafiles have been removed previously)

    I noticed that it's trying to create the datafile. Shouldn't it be giving me a "Restoring datafiles from backup piece" clause? Also it appears to be trying to recreate the datafiles in their old location. Any thoughts on how to get around this.
    Using the db_file_name_convert does allow me to restore files to the filesystem, but they use names such as "omf_*" and I'm not sure if it's converting the files properly from ASM format.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    I assume your problem is either in your pfile ( but you indicate you have removed all RAC settings), or in your control file.
    I would recommend to remove the control files and create them later as soon as the datafiles have been restored, using the commands:
    STARTUP NOMOUNT
    CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "OMST01" NORESETLOGS FORCE LOGGING NOARCHIVELOG
    -- SET STANDBY TO MAXIMIZE PERFORMANCE
    MAXLOGFILES 100
    MAXLOGMEMBERS 2
    MAXDATAFILES 1024
    MAXINSTANCES 8
    MAXLOGHISTORY 10210
    LOGFILE
    < your logfiles >
    DATAFILE
    < your datafiles >
    CHARACTER SET <your character set>;So the steps are
    Startup nomount with the pfile
    Restore the datafiles using rman
    Shutdown the database
    Use above script to create the control files
    It is possible you need to use the RESETLOGS option instead of the NORESETLOGS

  • Cssd does not start in non-RAC environment Thus we can not bring up ASM

    Non-RAC environment
    ASM version = 11.1.0.7
    HP-UX Itanium 11.23
    After power outage, CSSD does not start on non-RAC environment
    Running as root "/sbin/init.d/init.cssd start" does not start cssd
    Oracle support tried "$ASM_HOME/bin/localconfig delete" and "$ASM_HOME/bin/localconfig add"
    but it did not start CSS
    Oracle support tried "$ASM_HOME/bin/localconfig reset $ASM_HOME"
    It started the CSSD and the "crsctl check css" came back with CSS is healthy
    But around 1 minute later it rebooted the server and when it came up again CSS does not start.
    They checked /etc/inittab and it looked fine.
    Before the reboot we saw this message in the /var/adm/syslog/OLDsyslog.log:
    Cluster Ready Services completed waiting on dependencies
    Again it is a NON-RAC environment. We only need CSSD for ASM. We do not have CRS installed on this server.
    Our test system has been down for a week and we did not get the resolution from Oracle support yet !
    Any pointers are greately appriciated.
    Thanks,
    Dzung

  • How to create a standby redolog from rac to non rac ??

    Hi,
    How to create a standby redolog from rac to non rac DR setup..???
    in rac we can create with specifying thread number for each instances..... but this will be replicating to standby ....so how this will act/create on single DR??
    pls help

    Thanks Shivanandha,
    (maximum number of logfiles for each thread + 1) * maximum number of threads
    Using this equation reduces the likelihood that the primary instance's log writer (LGWR) process will be blocked because a standby redo log file cannot be allocated on the standby database. For example, if the primary database has 2 log files for each thread and 2 threads, then 6 standby redo log file groups are needed on the standby database.In maximum performance mode you can keep same number of redo logs but having one more redo log member for each thread is recommended and mandtory for other protection modes.

    Yes, even your DR is RAC or non-RAC, you must have both threads, because each instance information exist on own thread, So to perform redo transition from both the instances, you must have both standby redo log threads even though if it is non an RAC DR.
    Hope This helps.

  • Steps to Convert R12 Non-Rac to RAC database with ASM

    we have gone through many oracle support documents but were unable to decide which path we should adopt. Any body who has done similar activity; please share only highly level steps. No step by step Instructions are needed. e.g. Install Grid Infrastructure (for single instance or the one which comes with cluster home???????), Move datafiles to ASM etc etc
    Please make sure the steps are for 11gR2 and EBS R12.
    Best Regards,

    we have gone through many oracle support documents but were unable to decide which path we should adopt.
The steps in [ID 823587.1] which is referenced above should be sufficient (from your post, I understand that you have covered the steps in this doc) -- What exactly you have issues with?

  • RAC ASM instance creation

    Can we configure ASM instance on all nodes in RAC at the same time?

    Thanks for your reply.
    Do we have centralized ASM instance for all nodes?
    If yes does it should be created on shared device or something else???Normally database will reside in SHARED STORAGE and ASM & RBDMS instances willbe in stand alone systems..
    ASM diskgorup will be sharable to all the instances... not the instance can be sharable
    Hope you understood.
    Thanks
