Creating a simple database search

Hi
I'm being dragged kicking and screaming into site development
by the needs of an important customer, and I'm trying to create a
very simple search of a database.
I'm using DW CS4 with PHP & MySQL on a Mac (Leopard)
using MAMP.
I've set up two pages for the task.
1) a HTML page with a form using the 'GET' method
2) a PHP page with the Recordset to filter 'postcode' 'begins
with' using the 'URL Parameter' and 'postcode', and sort by
'company' 'Ascending'
Running a test in the Recordset works great.
When testing in a browser however (Firefox and Safari), the
post code appears in the URL string when arriving at the results
page, but no results show.
When I don't apply a filter in the Recordset, all records
display in the results page perfectly.
I'm going even more grey (gray?) so any help and advice would
be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

I've sorted it.

  • How do I create a simple database search

    Either I'm being very stupid or all the manuals and books I'm
    reading really are skirting round the obvious question of how do I
    build a search page (using Dreamweaver 8) that searches a database
    using only valid values previously fetched from the database. Can
    anyone advise?
    Example:
    Say I've got a table called members which holds a list of
    members of a gym. Say I want to offer my users a way of filtering
    down the list of members by (say) home town and hair colour.
    What I want to do is offer my users two lists which are
    generated using Datasets: One listing all the unique hometowns of
    my members and one listing unique hair colours. I want my users to
    enter search criteia but only valid ones - so they must select from
    the list of valid values I provide them with. I'll then filter my
    main resulkts based on what they select.
    But how do I do this? Not using URL variables obviously. And
    not using Form variables as you can't list database items in a form
    variable (can you?). I've got "DW 8: The Missing Manual" which I
    was hoping would give me the answers I'm looking for but instead
    seems to get very excited about the power of Dreamweaver 8 then
    skirts round the fact that you can't use current database values to
    do a database search!!! (unless I'm missing something that is)
    While I'm at it - I'd idealy want to achieve all this on a
    single page but I'm willing to concede on that if technology
    predicts otherwise.
    ASP.NET (VB)
    Dreamweaver 8.0.2
    Any guidance would be very welcome. (I'm new to all this by
    the way)

    > But how do I do this? Not using URL variables obviously.
    Querystrings could be used if you wanted to. That'd be nice
    so people could
    bookmark the page.
    > ASP.NET (VB)
    Might be time to consider NOT using DW, as it no longer
    supports ASP.net
    But, in pseudo code:
    onPageLoad:
    - get list of hometowns
    - populate hometown dropdown
    - get list of hair colors
    - populate hair color dropdown
    onPostBack:
    - check to see if there is a hometown selected
    - check to see if there is a hair color selected
    - if either of the above, modify the WHERE clause in your
    SQL query to
    reflect those values.
    If you wanted to add querystrings, modify the logic as such:
    onPageLoad:
    - get list of hometowns
    - populate hometowndropdown
    - get list of hair colors
    - populate hair color dropdown
    - check for querystrings
    - if they exist, grab them, modify the WHERE clause in your
    SQL query to
    reflect those values and show the results.
    onPostBack:
    - check to see if there is a hometown selected
    - check to see if there is a hair color selected
    - do a response.redirect to this page adding the appropriate
    querystrings
    if either of the above had values.

  • Help with Designing a Simple Database

    I am currently working on a designing problem I would appreciate if someone could review my solution.
    The Problem:
    I need to create a simple database that contains the following entries
    First Name //mandatory
    Last Name //mandatory
    Date of Birth //mandatory
    Hobbies //there could be anywhere from 0 to infinite amount of hobbies
    Type of actions that I need to perform on the database
    Add, delete, and modify and entry
    Below are a two design solutions I came up with
    For both solutions I am going to create two text files. One of the text files called profiles.txt will contain the following fields on each line
    Id, First Name, Last Name, Date of Birth
    //the Id field in this text file will be the primary key so you will not see the Id duplicated
    The other text file called hobbies.txt will contain the following fields on each line
    Id, hobby
    //the Id field can be duplicated in this text file so a person can be linked to zero or several hobbies
    Now what differs between my solutions is how I am going to read this data into my program
    Solution 1) When you start the program it will read the profiles.txt into a linked list. After that is finished the program will then load the hobbies into several linked list that the profiles linked list will point to. So basically each person will have a linked list of hobbies associated with him or her.
    Problem I see with this solution is that if there were 200 million people contained in the profiles.txt would my program crash since the computer would not have enough memory to load all of those names?
    Solution 2) Instead of loading the data at the start of the program the data will stay in the text files. So when someone does a search it will open the text file and search for the entry.
    Problem with this solution is it would be hard to delete and modify names (would I have to rewrite the text file every time I do a change?). Would a good fix to this problem be creating a separate text file to keep track of any changes or deletions I do and once in a while do a database maintenance?
    So a review of my questions is
    1)     Would my program crash if I had 200 million entries if I use my solution 1?
    2)     Is my solution 2 possible without being incredibly slow or complicated?
    3)     Is there another way of doing this I have not thought of?

    I think having one option will do. Now the problem with this text file thing is that, we'll hve to read every information into memory if we are running a test driver for the program and then work on the information in memory.
    After the program closes, whatever changes we made to this data in memory shd be written to file so we need to find a way of writing the data from memory to overwrite the file. I hope you kinda get what i'm talking abt.
    the database will consist of information like this
    String firstName
    String lastName
    String DOB
    ArrayList / Vector Hobbies
    Now, we kinda want to declare a class with with all these information as data fields ok.
    so let's say
    public class Try{
    String firstName
    String lastName
    String DOB
    ArrayList / Vector Hobbies
    and then create an instance of this class in the driver
    which will be an ArrayList of this class or something so each index of this class ArrayList will hve it's unique data information from the file we read in but again, this is kinda working in memory right.
    After doing all we have to do, we want to write back to file all the changes we made to the data in memory. That's where we are kinda stuck right now.
    A member of the group was suggesting we call whatever functions to work on the txt file which will mean we'll hve to re-write each time we call a function to operate on it and all that stuff. This is a slow process.
    will be glad if anybody out there will have a better way to implement this. Thanks a lot.

  • After creating a searchable database I am unable to search documents based off of the bates number.

    I just finished creating a searchable database in Adobe Acrobat Pro and it finds documents based off of search terms fine. It does not however locate documents based off of the Bates number that I am using as a search term. Why won't it let me do this?

  • Create simple database form in APEX

    I'm trying to create a simple form off of a database table or query.
    After going through the wizard, the form does not bring back any data.
    I see it created a process Before Header: Fetch Row from table_name, but that doesnt' seem to be happening.
    Is there something that has to be set to activate the form to actually query?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    In the form page's "Fetch Row..." and "Process Row..." processes, you can specify two key fields (one "primary" and one "secondary"). As long as the fields you are referencing are a unique combination, this should work ok. Though, ideally, you should create a primary key on all tables.
    In both processes, make sure you complete the "...Secondary Key...." settings with the appropriate page item names and table column names. Your form page should also have two "hidden and protected" page items - one for each of the keys - the link from your report should populate both of these.

  • Creating a simple search page

    Hi all,
    I am trying to create a simple search page using Jdeveloper 9.03 OA Framework that will allow the user to search for records in a view based on a few key columns.
    Are there any resources available which show a step by step process for doing a simple search? I followed the User Guide as far as being able to create the EOs, VOs and the query page region but I dont know how to get the results of the VO in the query page.
    There has got to be an easy way of getting such a apparently simple task done. I get the impression J Developer is unnecessarily complicated... Why couldnt there have been Wizards for common development tasks? It just seems unnecessarily confusing.
    I'd appreciate any help on this, no matter how insignificant. Im at an impasse here.
    Thanks,
    Rylan

    Thanks for the reply! That is precisely what I need to do.
    I did that, and it worked, but with one major problem... For some reason, it only works on the seeded tables in the AK schema. Those work without any problem. I tried making my own test tables also in the AK schema but when I try to search non AK seeded tables. it errors out. Funny thing is it errors out only when there are records found. If there are no records found the page displays correctly.
    Ive tried everything I can think of.
    I made a two column table with primary keys, unique indexes, not null conditions, everyting that seemed special about the seeded AK tables to see if I could prevent the error from coming... no luck.
    I suspect it is a bug... Has any one ever got this error before?
    The error message is :

  • Step by step instructions to create a Simple PCUI Application

    I am very new to PCUI and have been trying to get a simple application up and running for the last few days. There always seems to be some problem or the other. At times it gives a dump, at times it gives me a screen without the search request or search result area and when i get all of these done, my application just does not invoke the Query method.
    I would appreciate it if you could give me Step by Step instructions to create a simple PCUI application to search for some data from an existing database table and display it.
    Thanks in advance!!!

  • A very simple database system with JSON

    If we need to store some data in a database, but without the need of advanced SQL features, can we use this scheme (written here in Javascript / node.js) :
    // the DB will be in RAM !
    var myDb = {};
    // read DB from disk if file exists
    try { myDb = JSON.parse(fs.readFileSync(DBFILENAME)); } catch(e) { }
    // serialize to disk every minute or when process terminates
    function serialize() { fs.writeFile('./myDb.json', JSON.stringify(myDb)); }
    setInterval(serialize, 60 * 1000);
    process.on('SIGTERM', serialize); process.on('SIGINT', serialize);
    myDb['record1'] = 'foo';
    myDb['record2'] = 'bar';
    See
    the longer version here as a gist (8 lines of code).
    1) Does this DB practice have a name? Is it really so bad? Is it possible to use such a
    10-lines-of-code DB system, even in production of websites that have a < 1 GB database ?
    2) Scalability: until which size would this system work without performance problems?
    i.e. would it work until 2GB of data on a a normal Linux server with 4GB RAM? Or would there be real performance problems?
    Note: a minute seems enough to write a 2GB data to disk... Of course I admit it is 100% non-optimized, we could add
    diff feature between n-1th and nth writing to disk...
    3) Search: can I use ready-to-use tools to do some search in such a "simple" database? Lucene, ElasticSearch, Sphinx, etc. something else?

    Nothing is wrong with this for development. If it has a name, I suppose it would be a mock database. It is not uncommon to create a mock database that can emulate very basic functionality. You have the added advantage that you start from a scratch
    database each and everytime, thus you know that your program would work also for a potential empty nosql database for the same reason.
    However this is not a reasonable permanent solution by any means.
    Most programmers, due to the small overhead, will simply go ahead and make it work with a nosql database. It may take slightly longer, you are also programming directly to work in production and not being forced to adapt your program and test it beforehand.
    Scalability is a non-issue because you're always working in development. If you crash your own computer, it is not that big of a deal. The limit of such a database would be only that of your RAM (or the RAM of the computer running the server), however I
    think you'd find that you'll find that the program gets very slow before you even reach the point when your program will crash.
    Perhaps you could adapt some searching mechanism for the mock database, but if you're going to go through the trouble, just go ahead and use a proper nosql database. If you literally lose more than 1 hour working on this mock database, then you've wasted
    time.

  • Creating a simple network services directory using JNDI/LDAP

    I want to create a simple directory of all the local network services.
    For example:
    o=NetworkServices
      ou=Databases
        cn=FooDB
          attributes >> ipAddress, networkAddress, typeService, typeHost, description
        cn=BarDB
       ou=Authentications
        cn=FooAuth
        cn=BarAuth
       ou=Communities
        cn=FooComm
        cn=BarCommIs there a simple schema (DIT) that can service this need?
    I looked a nis.schema, http://usermap.cvut.cz/ldap/nis.schema, and it appears to be overkill for my needs, plus I do not understand all the attributes it defines.
    Thanks

    hi guys,
    I don't know maybe the way i structure the question is wrong.
    The link to the form is going to be on the intranet, the moment anybody is able to logon to his system with his nt userid , he clicks on the form and this form displays his details. i have a database that contain all the staff details but how do i get his nt userid that i'll use to search the database.
    A dot net programmer has been able to get the userid and if by monday i can't get the userid i'll have to go and learn dot net or leave the company.
    Greatest javites, any hint will be appreciated.
    Best Regards

  • Simple database app.

    I know there have been loads of questions about simple database apps, but I wanted to ask if anyone could recommend something specific:
    Every month I receive an Excel spreadsheet of data (a membership list) for my organisation. It is basically a list of members' contact details and a few other bits of data. Up until now I have been using FileMaker 8.5 but the problems with Leopard are the last straw; it seems a vastly overpriced solution for what I actually need.
    All I need is to be able to create reports of members, search the database and ocassionally print some address labels for mailouts. Obviously FileMaker is capable of doing this, but it's too expensive and I use only the basic features. It seems crazy for a small office like mine to have to pay over the odds for this; I know FileMaker is capable of much more and hence the cost, but I was looking for an alternative.
    Is there anything that would be suited to my needs?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Harry !
    if your data simply contacts and a few bit more, what about AddressBook.app ? I know, that it is not much confortable to import/export but for Contacts is good (&Inclusive).
    I don't know when the OpenOffice developers will make a bigger update for Leo, perhaps the current version will work too. Try it: http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/index.html (135MB)
    Ciao

  • Create a simple proc

    I'm having issues create a simple select proc
    create or replace
    PROCEDURE abc.test_proc
    AS
    begin
    select first_name from emp;
    end test_proc;
    I also want to call this proc ...is this the way to do it
    begin
    test_proc();
    end;

    Hi,
    Sorry, I didn't have more time to answer you earlier.
    If you want to learn PL/SQL, you should get follow book or web site. If you search for "learn pl sql" you'll find some site with lists of bookes, and some with on-line instruction, such as [this one|http://www.developer.com/lang/other/article.php/777761/Day-1-Learning-the-Basics-of-PLSQL.htm]. I just found it: it looks good, but I only glanced at it, so I can't endorse it very much. Ask questions on this site when you get stuck.
    Here's an explanation of my last message:
    PL/SQL isn't really designed for user interaction, so PL/SQL's screen output capabilities are lousy compared to anything except PL/SQL's keyboard input capabailites, which are non-existent.
    There is a package called dbms_output which you can use for learning and debugging purposes. When you call routines in dbms_output (put_line may be the only one you need to call), output is sent to a buffer. The buffer will be displayed when the program you are currently running finishes, but only if you have previously enabled it by saying
    SET SERVEROUTPUT  ON  SIZE 50000
    or something similar. You only have to do this once per session
    Put_line takes one argument, a string. The argument can be a simple string literal, like 'Hello, world!', below:
    create or replace
    PROCEDURE test_proc
    AS
    begin
        dbms_output.put_line ('Hello, world!');
    end test_proc;or it can be a complicated expression involving concatenation of literals, variables, columns, function results, CASE expressions - anything that results in a string.
    After the END statement, you always have to type a slash
    / to compile the code. If you made any errors, you'll get only the vaguest of error messages by default. You have to say:
    SHOW ERRORSimmediately to get meaningful error messages.
    You can execcute the procedure from an anonymous PL/SQL block, like you posted earlier, or from an EXEC command, like this:
    EXEC  test_proc;I always put PL/SQL code in scripts. I use Emacs, but you can use Notepad or any text editpor, to create a file that contains everything above, including
    <ul><li>the SET SERVEROUTPUT ON command (even though you only have to do it once per session, it doesn't hurt to do it over)
    <li>the PL/SQL code
    <li>/
    <li>SHOW ERRORS (if there are no errors, it won't hurt)
    <li> EXEC
    <ul>
    If you saved the file as c:\pl_sql_folder\my_script.sql, then you can run the whole thing by saying:
    @c:\pl_sql_folder\my_scriptHere's a quick example of getting data from a table, using a cursor:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE show_emp
    AS
        -- Variables get defined here
        CURSOR  emp_scr
        IS  SELECT  ename
            ,       sal
            FROM    scott.emp;
    BEGIN
        FOR  emp_rec  IN emp_csr
        LOOP
            dbms_output.put_line (emp_rec.ename || ' = ename');
        END LOOP;
    END show_emp;I'm not at a database right now, so I can't test this.

  • Create Registerform and a search possibility within the registered data

    Hi,
    what I am trying to figure out with Muse is to create a simple register form. And having a search engine within the site to search for several registered persons.
    For example:
    I am planning on building a site where people can register themselves through a form. Somehow all the registered people are saved in a database. And through a keyword all the people with that same keyword are shown in a result box.
    Is something like this possible with muse using several widgets?
    Larry

    Hi Larry,
    Take a look to this thread, discussing a similar scenario

  • Error while creating a simple function, procedure or triger in Oracle8i Lite

    Hi,
    I have Oracle8i Lite release 4.0.
    While creating a simple proceudre/function/trigger on the database, it's throwing the following error:
    create or replace function test return number is
    ERROR at line 1:
    OCA-30021: error preparing/executing SQL statement
    [POL-5228] syntax error
    Here is my sample code.
    create or replace function test return number is
    begin
    return 0;
    end;
    Tried to create the same function in the user SYSTEM too but got the same error message.
    Thanks in advance for the soluton.
    null

    I just started with 8i Lite, but as far as I know 8i Lite does not support PL/SQL code.
    So you have to write your triggers and stored procedures in Java.
    Ciao
