Creating an additional iPhoto account

Hi Everyone.
I am running iPhoto 11 version 9.4.3. I currently have 16,195 pictures in 'one' iPhoto account. I back everything up to Time Machine and 2 external hard drives. I've also burned everything onto DVDs. I'm a bit worried about the amount of photos in the account based on past experiences with iPhoto. I need advice on what to do.
1) Should I create another iPhoto account?
2) Should I remove all the photos currently in iPhoto because they are backed up on to my EHD?
I've experienced a major crash with iPhoto a year ago so I'm a bit leary. I appreciate the advice and help.

As Larry says, 16k is a small library these days. There is nothing other than inconvenience to be gained from a second library.

Why? What would you hope to achieve?
Also you need to understand how Time Machine works. It keeps a rolling back up of your data. Changes in your data are reflected in the back up. So additions are added to the back up.
And deletions are removed from the back up.
So, if you delete this material from your Mac then it will be also deleted from Time Machine, eventually. When exactly depends on when Time Machine requires the extra disk space.

I have a 5 yr. old iPhone 3GS, I can't back it up to my laptop, it's not working, but wondered if i can back it up to her laptop, if I create a new user account name, w/out losing her info?

The computer I used to back my iPhone on when I first got it no longer works, so I was wondering about being able to back my iPhone up to my daughters laptop, but she also has an iPhone 3GS, that's already backed up to her laptop. I know you couldnt back up two iPhones up to one computer, (at least that's what I was told, years ago), but I was recently told by an "Apple" rep that I could "probably" back my iPhone up to her computer without losing anyone's info, if I created a "Secondary User Name Account" on her computer. I'm not comfortble doing this unless I'm reassured more than being told that it's "probably" safe.
Does anyone know what options I have, and if this idea would result in one or both of us losing our info, if we tried to store two iPhones "back up info" on one laptop?
My phone's barely working at all, but I can still access my info, (for now, at least). I really need to do something now.
Could anyone who knows how this works please give me some info?

First, you don't have a 5+ year old 3GS. The 3GS has only been around for under 4 years. In fact, 5 years ago there were NO iPhones; the original iPhone (2 generations before the 3GS) came out on June 29, 2007 - not quite 5 years ago. The 3GS was released June 19, 2009.

I have an active existing iTunes store account and use the same Apple ID for signing into my iTunes Connect Account that distributes Apps.
I have created some books using the iBook author and in order to distribute content on the iBookstore I have been told electronically that I need a new Apple ID and password that is different to iTunes store account which I have already activated and completed contracts, tax information and bank information valid until 2013?
I want to create a Paid Books Account using the same email address, tax information and bank information. This has been most frustrating, as I cannot get passed the sign in section and there is no contact person I can speak to. I was of the understanding the iTunes connect account and the Developer programs which I paid good money for is all what I needed to be paid for selling iBooks on the iBookstore???
I only have one email address and wish to also use it for the Paid Books Account. I have books ready to be exported and published.

Hi Lrwill,
If the apps that are on your son's iPad were purchased under his Dad's Apple ID, then signing your Apple ID onto the iPad will not help you with updating those apps.
Also, if the iPad was sync'd with his Dad's iTunes library, then hooking it up to your computer/iTunes library, will require you to reset the iPad, and everything that was loaded under the other Library and Apple ID will be wiped out.
Can you provide a little more info about what was set up under which Apple ID and what iTunes library the iPad was sync'd with?

How can I send photos from my iPhoto account to another account?

Hi,
I recently got me a new MacBook and thus dumped my old one at my parents.
They also have an iPad 3 and I configured their MacBook on Mountain Lion to work with their iPad.
I have a bunch of pictures in my iPhoto library that I want to make available to them. Ideally I would send them an entire album and it would magically appear on their iPad.
In lieu of that it would be nice if that album would just appear in their iPhoto account. Is there an easy way to do it?

If you've used iWeb at all you could get yourself a website and create iWeb album or photo pages with the option to download the photos. These two demo pages are examples of those iWeb pages. The secons has the download option activated (just click on one of the thumbnails): Using an iWeb Album Page as an Alternative to MobileMe Galleries and Using an iWeb Photo Page as an Alternate to a MobileMe Gallery.

You could also restrict access to those webpages thru the hosting service with passwords and usernames if so desired. The webpage could be access by any computer or mobile device.

Creating more than one account for a single user

I was wondering, if I creat more than one account for me (the only person that uses my powerbook) is that going overboard? I mean, lets say I am logged into the standard account and I want to learn more about the bash shell and using terminal which I am new to, if I **** something up will the whole system be toast or will only things in that account be messed up? Like could I then just log into my admin account and delete the other messed up one? Or no? My theory was that this was a way of keeping my comp safe from myself, being that I am new to macs and moreso that I am new to the unix side of things and want to start learning the command line without worrying about screwing up my whole system. I would just use the standard account for everyday use (like what I do now) or experiment with terminal, and when I need to download something or change some settings that requires me to be logged in as admin then I would log in and download what I need then log out and use it in the standard account...am I just wasting my time? Is what I am doing any "safer" than just having one admin account and thats it?

First, I don't subscribe to the "one should not use an admin account" philosophy. For someone who is the owner and main user of any given machine, I see the use of anything but an admin account a bit anal, totally unecessary, and needlessly complicating.
On the other hand, I don't see the need for more than one admin account on any given machine. Yes, I see exceptions to this, and many people favor having a second admin account as a "backup," but I have never had more than one admin account on any of my machines, and have never encountered a situation where one would have helped.
In short, I like the idea of having a "main" admin account that is used most of the time, and then having "secondary" accounts (all non-admin) for any additional users that might log in.
Now, any limitations that apply to you as a GUI user of an account, admin or not, will apply to you at the command line as well. In other words, you can't get yourself into any more trouble at the command line than you can within the GUI. In fact, you might even be better protected at the command line than you are in the GUI. I say this because any action that would ordinarily "elevate" you above the standard capabilities of a non-admin user require the use of "sudo." Avoid the use of sudo, and you can avoid any problems.
That doesn't mean that you wouldn't be able to do something stupid that might wreck an account that contains "all of your stuff," and on which you depend. It is not likely that you would damage your System, but it is entirely conceivable that you might, for example, accidently delete or overwrite your entire HOME folder. Oops!
If you simply don't trust yourself with the command line, a second account might be a good place to experiment. Maybe create it as a non-admin account at first, with the option to change it to an admin account at a later time, when you want to learn how to use "sudo" to do more powerful things. By then, you will understand what not to do. Eventually, you will have the confidence to use the command line in your own account, which will have been an admin account all this while.

First off I'd just like to apologize if that is not the correct place to be posting this, but after looking around I don't see a perfect fit for this topic anywhere, so I figured here should be okay. Also I want to apologize if this turns out to be a rather lengthy post, I just want to ensure that I supply all info...
Okay, so about a month ago I recognized that my current user account is slowly but surely taking longer and longer to "boot up" after I put in my password and tell it to log in. What usually happens is that I click log in, the background image and taskbar almost immediately pop up but nothing else (finder icons, dock, and the multiple icons in the taskbar which include the airport signal, user name, bluetooth status, battery strength, volume, and my iChat and Adium status) the only things to immediately "activate" in the taskbar are the clock and spotlight.
As of late when I log in something especially strange is happening in that after the 5 or so minutes it takes the dock, rest of taskbar, and finder icons to appear my PB will play the default Apple sound of me emptying trash, rather there is anything actually in the trash or not. It dosen't delete the objects in the trash (if any, as I usually keep it empty), just simply plays the sound. I'm not sure if it playing this sound ties in any with the lagging log in times, I just wanted to mention it as the log in times have slowed down considerably since this sound started.
Bottom line given that there is no way that I know of fixing this problem, I am planning to simply create a new user account. Actually I have already created the new account (by the way, it logs in literally instantaneously, and does not make the strange trash being emptied sound) but was looking for info on how to get all of my files from one account to the other. Unfortunately for me everytime that I install a program and the dialog box pops up asking if you want to install it on all user accounts or just the current one I always click "just the current one" (please don't ask why, as there is seriously no reasoning to this at all...), so is there a way to transfer my current programs from one user account to the other without reinstalling??? It's actually not that many programs I'm talking about here (Shapeshifter, Xounds, XFactor, AIM, Adium, Cocktail, Toast, Popcorn, iPod Rip, and Office), I just figured that if I can simply transfer rather than reinstalling them, it would be a lot easier.
However my 2 primary concerns are my iTunes and iPhoto libraries (3330 songs and 4182 pcitures respectively), considering that I've spent literally hours making countless playlist in iTunes, and countless folders, slideshows, and books in iPhoto, if I was to lose all this it would truly be a mess.
I know I'm probably making a big deal out of this and it's an extremely easy and basic process, please just pardon this still pretty new Mac user and help me out:) Also if anybody else has experienced the log in slow down or strange trash being emptied sound I would be glad to hear your experiences.

Bottom line given that there is no way that I know of fixing this problem, I am planning to simply create a new user account.
You can do that (but I wouldn't) this KB article outlines how:

Basically you will copy the folders within your old home to replace the folders in the new home. Here is a list of specific folders if you decide to do that but a better solution would be to sort your existing user.
Here where your important data is stored ("~" stands for "Home"):
Your Data in Documents
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Application Support/iCal(copy the whole folder)
Also in ~ / Library/ Application Support (copy whatever else you need)
~ /Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist * This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.
~ / Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
~ / Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
~ / Library/iMovie (copy the whole folder)
~/ Pictures/iPhoto Library
If you want cookies:
~/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
~/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
so is there a way to transfer my current programs from one user account to the other without reinstalling???
As for applications, they should all be in your Application folder(there is only one) and available to ALL users, unless you have put "limitations" or "parental controls" on the account.
Now to the best course of action:
To find the issue affecting your existing user account, follow these steps:
Log back into your normal user account:
1. Navigate to ~(yourhome/library/fonts - drag this folder to the desktop.
      Restart and test your applications.
      If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( Likely suspects are Time RO & Helvetica Fractions, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
      Navigate to ~(yourhome/library/preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
      Restart and test your applications.
      If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs" .
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)
3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
   Navigate to yourhome/library.
   Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
   Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
   Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
Click on "apply to all"
   If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same      procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are      having trouble with.
Note:
The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.
If the isssue persists navigate to ~/library/caches and drag this folder to the trash, then log out and back or restart. There is no need to replace this folder.

Any suggestions on creating a new user account please? (thinpad x61 tablet, Vista Business edition)

I would appreciate any suggestions on creating/editing the user account on my second-hand thinkpad X61 tablet (running Vista Business) edition. I bought the laptop from ebay in Germany/Austria. When I switched it on, there were no options to create or edit a username. I have completed all the updates (Lenavo and Windows). I tried the following to add a new administrative account:
1, Control Panel then selecting User Accounts. A screen appears for a second and then disappears.
2. I have also tried typing in sysdm.cpl in the command prompt,
None of the above worked, as the screen does not appear at all. I have also tried allowing the automatic updates on, that does not work either. I was wondering if this is managed by the Think Vantage system. Not sure if this is relevant, the Vista Business language was set in German and I added a language pack via Vistalizator to turn it into English.
Any help with this issue would be appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Have you tried running the Local Users and Groups Manager (filename: LUSRMGR.MSC) to create a new user? If so, were you able to create additional accounts through it?

Can I create a corporate iCloud account?

I am in charge of managing the deployment of the Apple devices to our internal associates. I would like to be able to monitor the iPad and iPhone in the event it is lost or stolen. I would like to be able to create additional sub account under the main account that way the associates have the ability to sync their contents/contacts to the iCould without merging into one account.

If you can't access the App Store from the Apple menu, Dock, or Applications folder installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo will reinstall the App Store for you.
It's ok to do this even you are already running v10.6.8.

FYI: Some third party software can cause issues with the App Store > Mac App Store: Sign in sheet does not appear, or does not accept typed text

Adding additional itunes account iphone

At work I have several individuals with company iphones and I need to create a default itunes account (which has been done), and add it to their phones so I can log into find my iphone with the default account. The primary account in the phone will be theirs. How do I add an additional account into the phone?

The setting that Find my iPhone uses is the iCloud settings in the Settings app.

No it can't. This should work - Try using another browser to set up a new account. After you do that (if it works), go back to your favorite browser & enter your new account information.

In step 9 (after choosing Finish) 2 popups come up:
1) Secure Storage
A new master password has been created. Password recovery can be enabled by providing additional information. Would you like to do so now?
I klicked: No
2) Server Error
Cannot create application 'hello1' in account 'p1940087376trial'
Reason:
Authentication failed. Check:
1. if the accound name and the host are correct
2. the provided user has rights to perform the operation in the specified account
3. the provided password is correct
This is the screen "Run On Server":
I think my account name and the password should be correct.
What about the host and the user rights? Anything else that I should do?
