Creating an Oracle connection in Net WCF using ODAC causes Exception

Why am I getting a 'System.TypeInitializationException' when I create an Oracle connection in my .Net WCF web service?
=========================================================================
I'm currently working on implementing a WCF service which talks to an Oracle 10g database on the backend. When I attempt to connect to the database from within my service, I get the following exception: System.TypeInitializationException.
•I'm running on a windows 7 (64 bit machine).
•I'm using VS 2010.
•I'm using Oracle 10g on the backend.
I'm the Oracle.DataAccess.dll (ODP.Net) from the following installed instance
c:\oracle\product\10.2.0\.....\ODP.NET\bin\1.x\Oracle.DataAccess.dll
•I've included this DLL in the references for my WCF service.
•I've included this service as a project within my VS WPF solution.
•The service starts up automatically when I start my WPF application in VS 2010.
At runtime I see the following output in my debug output window:
'WcfSvcHost.exe' (Managed (v4.0.30319)): Loaded 'C:\Windows\assembly\GAC\Oracle.DataAccess\1.102.2.20__89b483f429c47342\Oracle.DataAccess.dll' A first chance exception of type 'System.TypeInitializationException' occurred in Oracle.DataAccess.dll
Sure enough, I look at the exception details in the debugger and I see the following information (this occurs when I attempt to create a new ORACLE connection):
"The type initializer for 'Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleConnection' threw an exception." InnerException {"The provider is not compatible with the version of Oracle client"} System.Exception {Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleException}
A Little Background:
I'm basically migrating my data layer to a WCF service. The same service layer previously existed in a WinForm application. Everything works fine in my WinForm application. I include the same reference to the Oracle.DataAccess.dll and all my reads/writes with the database work fine.
Is there something obviously different between the WCF and WinForm access/use of the DLL? Is there some limitation I'm unaware of? Is there an issue running this through VS2010 in the debugger?
I have absolutely no idea what is going on here. Any hints/direction would be greatly appreciated.

It's certainly possible to install .NET 1.x on the machine while still using VS 2010, but MS does not support and most likely never tested this combination. Running .NET Framework 1.x on Windows 7 also is not supported. I didn't know you had successfully used this combination previously. Nonetheless, it's good to be on a supported combination that has been certified by MS and Oracle if you run into a problem.
I had another reason to ask you to upgrade to ODP.NET 11.2 As it will be the last version installed, ODP.NET's unmanaged DLLs will appear in your PATH first. The error you see is typical when ODP.NET from one version tries to use DLLs from another Oracle instance installed on your machine.
If that doesn't work, set the DllPath setting in your web.config file to the BIN directory of your newly installed Oracle Client. Here's an example of that:

  • Connection String example required using ODAC 10.2

    Hi All,
    Apologies if this has already been covered...
    I have a .net app running on W2K3 SP2 x86. It uses an Oracle 10G (10.2.0.4) database backend running on Redhat Linux x86_64.
    I have two oracle client homes on the app server; one for full admin (10.2.0.4), the other for ODAC 10.2.0.2. The default home is the ODAC client.
    Normally, I would use the following conn string in my web.config;
    Data Source=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS =(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=MYHOST.MYDOMAIN.LOCAL)(PORT = 1521)))(CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME=MTDB)));User ID=MY_USER;Password=MYPASSWORD;
    This works just fine. But now, I have a requirement to use Kerberos authentication.
    I have configured Kerberos for the database, client and Active Directory successfully and have verified all the parameters and that I can connect to the database using the Windows credential successfully - well, at least from the Full Admin home. I have mirrored config changes the ODAC home (obviously updating any absolute file path references).
    However, now I need to update the above connection string in web.config to use Kerberos. This is where I am struggling... Can anyone provide me with an example? I have not made any changes to web.config yet.
    Many thanks, Richard.

    Ok - I didn't need to raise a ticket with Oracle. Trial and error resolved this.
    1. If you are using IIS, then you need to ensure that the identity account for the App Pool is set to the same credential used to authenticate against the database (in much the same way as one would for authenticating against a sql database). Remember to add the credential to the IIS_WPG group on the app server.
    2. For the Website properties / Directory Security tab; depending on your requirements, enable/disable anonymous access tick-box and the Integrated Windows Security tick-box. I am not using Single Sign-ON for the application yet, so I enabled the anonymous access tick-box and set the credential to match the database credential.
    3. If you are using a FULL ADMIN Oracle client home, then use this connection string "Data Source=MyDatabaseName; Integrated Security=SSPI;"
    If you are using ODAC, then use this connection string "Data Source=MyDatabaseName; User Id=/;"

  • Security Error when creating new db connection

    I have a SQLJ class that creates an explicit connection to the database using the following line of code:
    DefaultContext ctx1 = Oracle.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@machine_name:1526:sid", userName, password);
    This code works fine when run from the command line, but when the class is loaded into the database and run from inside the database, I get the following error message on the above line:
    java.security.AccessControlException: the Permission (java.net.SocketPermission machine_name resolve) has not been grant
    ed by dbms_java.grant_permission to SchemaProtectionDomain(userid|PolicyTableProxy(userid))
    I am unable to find any information on this error or on the dbms_java.grant_permission package. Any ideas would appreciated.
    Richard.

    I believe you get something like a 30-day full-functioning "trial" from the licensed install discs before you're locked out, if you don't activate over the Internet. It used to be a more manual process, but with CS4, it's done during install as long as you do have a live Internet connection. Again, from the information, it's hard to tell what's actually happening (ie. what's the message box that appears say?), but you could try plugging into the Internet and then going to Help > Activate from any of the suite apps.

  • Maps connecting to net

    hi i was wondering if anyone knows how to stop your phone from connecting to net when using maps on N95

    You can change the online settings from within Maps itself. I use Maps 2.0, if you still have 1.2 the menu structure is slightly different, but something like:
    Options>Tools>Settings>Internet then change the option 'Go online at startup' to 'Always ask' or 'no'.
    I use the always ask settings so I don't have to mess about with settings if I'm updating licences or anything like that, but I never use the online option when navigating.
    Also, you can switch off the A-GPS function from the phone menu:
    Menu>Tools>Settings>General>Positioning>positioning methods, then untick Assisted GPS.

  • Oracle: slow performance with SELECT using ojdbc14 and connection pooling

    Hello,
    i'm working hard the last days to solve a performance problem with our customer using a oracle 10g database. For testing I used our oracle 9.2.0.1.0 database which shows the same symptoms. All doing solved nothing: the performance while using this oracle is much slower than other databases. This result I cannot trust and so I need some advice. What is missing to improve the performance on the java side?
    The webapplication I use runs fast on MySQL 4.x and SQLServer 2000, but on the above mentioned Oracle it was always 4 times slower. The webapplication uses a lot of simple SELECT-Statements without complicated joins and so on (because it should run on many different databases). Doing some days of creating tests within this webapplication, I was not able to find any entrance point for a change. All databases server I'm using, having only the default configurations after a common installation.
    To reduce the complexity I wrote a simple java application with connection pooling using only the latest libraries from apache-commons(dbcp, pool), and the latest ojdbc14 for oracle 9.2.
    First the results than the code: MySQL needed less than 1000 millisecond, SQLServer around 1000 milliseconds and Oracle over 2000 milliseconds. I stopped pooling and the results are for Oracle even worse: over 18000 milliseconds (mysql:2500, sqlserver:4100).
    I changed the classes for Oracle and used the class oracle.jdbc.pool.OracleConnectionCacheImpl from the ojdbc14-library. No difference (around 100 milliseconds more or less).
    The only Select-Statement works on this table, which has one index on HICTGID.
    It contains 259 entrances.:
    CREATE TABLE HIERARCHYCATEGORY (
      HICTGID                 NUMBER (19)   NOT NULL,
      HICTGLEVEL              NUMBER (10)   NOT NULL,
      HICTGEXTID              NUMBER (19)   NOT NULL,
      HICTGEXTPARENTID        NUMBER (19)   NOT NULL,
      HICTGNAME               VARCHAR2(255) NOT NULL
    );The application simply loops through this table using
    SELECT Hictgid, Hictgname FROM HIERARCHYCATEGORY WHERE HICTGID = ?, but I always open a connection before this query and closes this connection afterwards. So I use the pooling as much as possible. That's all SQL I'm using.
        protected static DataSource setupDataSource(String sDriver, String sUrl, String sUser, String sPwd) throws SQLException {
            BasicDataSource ds = new BasicDataSource();
            ds.setDriverClassName(sDriver);
            ds.setUsername(sUser);
            ds.setPassword(sPwd);
            ds.setUrl(sUrl);
            // The maximum number of active connections:
            ds.setMaxActive(3);
            // The maximum number of active connections that can remain idle in the pool,
            // without extra ones being released, or zero for no limit:
            ds.setMaxIdle(3);
            // The maximum number of milliseconds that the pool will wait (when there are no available connections)
            // for a connection to be returned before throwing an exception, or -1 to wait indefinitely:
            ds.setMaxWait(3000);
            return ds;
        }I can switch by using external properties between three databases (oracle, mysql and sqlserver) and if I want I can switch pooling off. And all actions I'm interested are logged by Log4J.

    databaseConnection=jdbc:mysql://localhost/testdb
    jdbcDriver=com.mysql.jdbc.Driver
    dbUsername=testusr
    dbPassword=testpwdThanks for your reading and maybe for your help.

    A few comments.
    There is of course another difference between your test cases then just the database. There is also the driver. And I suspect that in at least the case with the jtds driver it is helping you along where you are doing something silly and the Oracle driver is not.
    Before I explain the next part I would say the speed differences between MS-SQL and MySQL look about right I think you are aiming here for MS-SQL level performance not MySQL. (For a bunch of reasons MySQL is inherently faster but there are MANY drawbacks as well which have been well discussed on previous threads)
    Here is where I believe your problem lies
    while (lNextBottom <= lNextCeiling) {
                     con = getConnection();
                     innerSelStmt = con.prepareStatement("SELECT Hictgid, Hictgname FROM HIERARCHYCATEGORY WHERE HICTGID = ?");
                     innerSelStmt.setLong(1, lNextBottom);
                     rsInner = innerSelStmt.executeQuery();
                     if ((rsInner != null) && (rsInner.next())) {
                         sb.append(rsInner.getLong(1) + ", " + rsInner.getString(2) + "\r");
                          if (log.isDebugEnabled()) {
                               log.debug("Inner Statement: " + rsInner.getLong(1) + "\r");
                     rsInner.close();
                     con.close();
                     lNextBottom++;
                 }There at least four things that are wrong with above.
    1) Why are you preparing the statement INSIDE the loop. Let us for a moment say that the loop will spin 100 times. That means that you are preparing the same statement 100 times. This is bad. It is also very relevant because for example the Jtds driver is going to be caching the prepared statements you make so that actually while you try and prepare it 100 times it only actually does it once... but in Oracle I don't know what it is doing for sure but if it is preparing on each pass well than that bit of it is going take 100 times longer then it should.
    2) You are opening and closing the connection on each pass through the loop... also a terrible idea. You need to fix this first so that you can repeatedly use the same prepared statement.
    3) Why are you looping in the first place? More on this later.
    4) Where do you close the PreparedStatement? It doesn't look like you do.
    Okay so for starters your loop should look a lot more like this...
    code]
    con = getConnection();
    innerSelStmt = con.prepareStatement("SELECT Hictgid, Hictgname FROM HIERARCHYCATEGORY WHERE HICTGID = ?");
    while (lNextBottom <= lNextCeiling) {
    innerSelStmt.setLong(1, lNextBottom);
    rsInner = innerSelStmt.executeQuery();
    if ((rsInner != null) && (rsInner.next())) {
    sb.append(rsInner.getLong(1) + ", " + rsInner.getString(2) + "\r");
    rsInner.close();
    lNextBottom++;
    innerSelStmt.close();
    con.close();
    I think the code above (and you can put your debug stuff back if you want) which uses ONE connection and ONE prepared Statement will improve your performance dramatically.
    The other question though I would as is why in the hell you are doing 100 or whatever number of queries anyway. This can be done all in ONE query which again will improve performance.
    Your query and such should look like this I think.
    String sql = "SELECT Hictgid, Hictgname FROM HIERARCHYCATEGORY WHERE HICTGID >=? AND HICTGID<=?";
    PreparedStatement ps = conn.prepareStatement(sql);
    ps.setLong(1,lNextBottom );
    ps.setLong(2,lNextCeiling);
    ResultSet rs = ps.executeQuery();
    while(rs.next()){
      // your appending to string buffer code goes here
    }and I can't understand why you're not doing that in the first place.

  • Issue while creating connection pool in weblogic using SERVICE NAME

    Found two issues while creating connection pool in weblogic using SERVICE NAME
    1. While running apps from jdeveloper using xxx-jdbc.xml
    weblogic.common.ResourceException: Could not create pool connection. The DBMS driver exception was: Io exception: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection

    Problem
    database url is generated based on SID
    eg: jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:SID
    Solution
    (generate seperate url for SERVICE NAME)
    jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521/SERVICENAME
    ------------------------

    It is so clear: host not found error for network connection and the other SID servcie name not found means your oracle instance name is not up. check with srvctl status for given servcie name or node, else check CRS_Stat -t if you are using RAC.

  • New user created in oracle 11g (release 2) is not connecting (ORA-01017)

    Hi All,
    Kindly help me out regarding this.
    I have created a new user using "ORACLE Enterprise Manager 11g" and used the same credentials in SQL developer for a new connection and it throw "ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied" message.
    Kindly note that have followed the following steps in creating user:
    On the Users page, click Create.
    In the Name field, enter NICK.
    In the Profile list, accept the value DEFAULT.
    This setting assigns the default password policy to user Nick.
    In the Enter Password and Confirm Password fields, enter a password that is secure.
    Create a password that is secure. See Oracle Database Security Guide for more information.
    Do not select Expire password now. If the account status is set to expired, then the user or the database administrator must change the password before the user can log in to the database.
    (Optional) Next to the Default Tablespace field, click the flashlight icon, select the USERS tablespace, and then click Select.
    All schema objects that Nick creates will then be created in the USERS tablespace unless he specifies otherwise. If you leave the Default Tablespace field blank, Nick is assigned the default tablespace for the database, which is USERS in a newly installed database. For more information about the USERS tablespace, see "About Tablespaces".
    (Optional) Next to the Temporary Tablespace field, click the flashlight icon, select the TEMP tablespace, and then click Select.
    For the Status option, accept the default selection of Unlocked.
    You can later lock the user account to prevent users from logging in with it. To temporarily deny access to a user account, locking the user account is preferable to deleting it, because deleting it also deletes all schema objects owned by the user.
    Grant roles, system privileges, and object privileges to the user, as described in "Example: Granting Privileges and Roles to a User Account".
    Note: Do not click OK in Step 13 of "Example: Granting Privileges and Roles to a User Account". Instead, skip that step and continue with Step 12 in this procedure.
    Assign a 10 MB quota on the USERS tablespace, as described in "Example: Assigning a Tablespace Quota to a User Account".
    If you did not click OK while assigning the tablespace quota (previous step), click OK now to create the user.Kindly note that I have log in as SYSTEM user and created this new user.
    Could any one help me regarding this ?

    After connecting with sqlplus, as user SYSTEM and when tried the below, I could see that the new user created by me does not exist..
    select '--' || username || '--'
    from dba_users
    order by username;
    But when tried with GUI "ORACLE Enterprise Manager 11g" I can very well see the new user created by me..
    How is this possible mate??
    Is the user not properly created through GUI (than from where it is showing the new user)
    Some more information i want to share;
    i have used schema "HR"
    And have used table space "USERS"
    And tep tablespace "TEMP"

  • How to Create an Oracle BAM Server Connection?

    I m following the steps at the end of this post to create the connection but at the end I m getting this message from JDev:
    {Unable to write to
    /C:/JDeveloper/mywork/Application1/.adf/META-INF/connections.xml
    because it is a read-only. Either make it writable or allow it to be made writable through source control.}
    it creates the directory C:/JDeveloper/mywork/Application1/.adf/META-INF/ with only a adf-config.xml file but NOT the connections.xml any one knows what is wrong?
    Bellow is the stpes I m following. Its exactly what is written at the Oracle Fusion Middleware Developer´s guide for Oracle SOA Suite 11g Release 1(11.1.1) E10224-01
    To create an Oracle BAM connection:
    1. Select New from the File main menu in Oracle JDeveloper.
    The New Gallery dialog opens.
    2. Choose Connections from the General category.
    3. Select BAM Connection in the Items list, and click OK.
    The BAM Connection wizard opens.
    4. Provide a name for the connection. Leave the Create Connection In selection as
    Application Resources.
    5. Click Next.
    6. Enter the following connection information about the Oracle BAM instance.
    7. Click Next.
    8. Test the connection by clicking Test Connection. If the connection was successful,
    the following message appears:
    Passed.
    9. Click Finish.
    Note: You can create connections to Oracle BAM in the Oracle
    JDeveloper Resource Palette as well as the Application Resources
    panel of a specific application. It is recommended that you create these
    connections in the Application Resources pane rather than the
    Resource Palette.
    Field Description
    BAM Web Host Enter the name of the host on which the BAM report server and
    Web server are installed. In most cases, the BAM Web host and
    Oracle BAM Server host are the same.
    BAM Server Host Enter the name of the host on which the Oracle BAM Server is
    installed.
    User Name Enter the Oracle BAM Server user name (typically bamadmin).
    Password Enter the password of the user name.
    HTTP Port Enter the port number or accept the default value of 8888. This is
    the HTTP port for the BAM Web host.
    RMI Port Enter the port number or accept the default value of 9085. The
    RMI port is for the BAM report cache, which is part of the Oracle
    BAM Server.
    Use HTTPS Select this check box if you want to use secure HTTP (HTTPS) to
    connect to the Oracle BAM Server during design time.
    Otherwise, HTTP is used.

    Ok that will be nice, but is not the case I dont want to read the tutorial, the problem is I already start to read and execute the tutorial you told me the problem is this tutorial it doesnt show how to do everything from scratch because you already have inside the zip file everything like xmls etc etc, and I want to get my DO and create the process myself, I dont want to get something that it is already done, this tutorial does not show for example how to create this composite.xml, this file it is already inside the zip file, so this way I just follow half of the process and dont learn how to make the whole process.

  • Excel import on Oracle Linux - How to create an ODBC Connection

    Hi,
    We have Oracle BI EE on Oracle Linux. We need to create an ODBC DNS and import tables to Admin tool.
    How would you create a ODBC connection inside Linux to Microsoft excel file using unixodbc. What drivers we need.
    Please let us know.
    Thanks!
    Nilaksha.

    See this post here: Re: [NQODBC][SQL_STATE: HY000][nQSError: 100[nQSError: 43093][nQSError: 16023]
    You need to find an Excel ODBC driver for Linux. The ones that come with OBIEE won't read Excel as far as I know.
    For info on creating an ODBC connection for OBIEE on Linux check the manual or search this forum. You don't need unixodbc for it.

  • Can't Create the ODBC connection for Oracle 10g

    Hi,
         I am working with Oracle 10g Database Release 2 in windows XP professional. I am trying to create an ODBC connection for oracle but become failure because its generating the following errors:

    could not locate the setup or translator library
    Please help me how can I solve this problem and create the ODBC connection for oracle 10g database.
    Best Regards,

    could not locate the setup or translator libraryThe symptom described is typical of an incorrect system env PATH setting (used by the data source admin tool), compared to that of the Oracle Home (specifically, path $OH/bin). The odbc driver config routine will search directories listed in PATH variable for necessary libraries (Client dll's). If some library fails to load (from e.g. oraoci*.dll or oraclient10.dll) it will probably error out, as in your case.
    Are you creating the odbc dsn on the databse server host or on some other machine? I.e. are you using the db host as a client or not?

  • As a number of Oracle Connections created - Performance Issue

    Hello,
    We are using Oracle 9i as a backend and VB 6.0 as Frontend. For one client one connection will be opened in the Database Server, if 200 clients open the application then 200 connections will be opened in the Database Server, due to that performance issue is raising.
    We are doing: If the frontend application is not in use for 10-minutes then the connection is closed and at the same time front-end application is also terminated or if the Client terminates the application the connection is closed in the Server.
    Eventhought if 200-Clients connect the Server only 4 to 5 Clients send a request to the Server for retriving or for saving the data.
    I want to Open a fixed number of connections in the DataBase Server eg., around 10-connections, and i want to use this 10 connections for 200 clients.
    At First 10 Connections are opened and 10 Clients are using this 10 connections, among 10 Clients 1 released the database connection after finishing the Job and if 11'th Client opens then this released connection as to be used without opening a new connection, in the same way if some of the connections from 9 get free and if any other clients open application then this connections which are free as to be used for opening the application or else for doing any transaction. So, that the number of connection to be create can be redused.
    Please give me the suggestion how to make use the released connection for doing the transaction or else for opening the application.
    Thanking U with Regards,
    Sravan,
    Hyderabad.

    As Satish mentioned, Shared Server can be a good solution, but it would also be worth telling us , how did you quantify this thing that due to the number of connections, you have a performance issue? 200 is not that big number I guess. What's the o/s , exact database version and the system details with database details? Also if you have statspack report, post that too over here.

  • ODBC ORACLE connection issue when trying to create a datastore. SAP Ds 3.2

    I am at a client and I am trying to create an Oracle data store.  I have an Oracle client installed on my laptop and an ORACLE driver.  I can connect and query Oralce tables using Oralce tools on my laptop.
    When I go to SAP DS to create a datastore I get an error message "Cannot find NT Oracle Server DLL <OCI.dll>  Make sure Oracle has been installed and the PATH variable has been set"
    The PATH is set correctly.
    Creating a data store using Database Oracle give the above message.
    If I try using ODBC it cannot find the oracle drive in the system list.
    HELP

    Hello
    Are you using a supported version of Oracle?  I hope it's not Oracle 7!
    This is probably an installation issue, where is Data Services installed?  If its Program Files (x86), try re-installing in C:\SAP or similar.
    Your comment <<If I try using ODBC it cannot find the oracle drive in the system list.>>  makes me wonder if the the Oracle client is not installed properly.
