Creating Borders

I've been working a lot with Fireworks 8 and Dreamweaver 8,
and I've started my own website and whatnot, but there's just one
thing that's got me scratching my head.
How do I create a border in Fireworks, and get it into
Dreamweaver, so it's a fully functional, flexible border?

Sorry, yes. You want to have cellspacing="0" and
cellpadding="0" unlike the first example I gave. Cellspacing is the
distance between the cells and cellpadding is the distance from the
cell wall to the content in the cell. To match up images, they'll
both need to be zero. You may later need to add something to offset
your content in the middle cell, but we can get to that later.

Yes, but it requires CSS*. For the corners, if the height of
all the images on each row is the same, put the images in the cells
themselves, and not as backgrounds. Also, for the inner and outer
columns, set the width of the table cells to match the width of the
images.

Well, the browser tries to be as efficient as it
can with space. You have two options. You can set a a width on the
middle cell of the top row and your text will automatically wrap
inside the table, although the height of the table will then adjust
to fit the text. Alternatively you can specify line breaks where
you want them: [br /] (again, change square brackets to angled). In
this case, the size of the table will adjust if the user's font
size differs from yours.

* The CSS solution to putting a background image in a table
is to define a class for that cell using these properties:
background-image: set the background image
background-repeat: to set the type of tiling (all directions,
x-only, y-only, or none)
background-position: to position the image
If you only have this one page, you could put the CSS in the
head section of the page

For height and width, use the dimensions of your image.
Define styles for your other corners.
Then, in your table, for the upper left-hand cell, use

and similarly for the other corners.
I think I have that right, anyway.

    You're not missing anything.  You're correct in your finding that adding/modifying location data in the new Photos application has been removed. 
    With that said, in a proactive manor you can submit feedback (do it at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html since there is no section for Photos yet) and request that location modification be added.  The more people who do it, the more likely it is to be added.

  • GridBagLayout - Question about Creating Borders for Cells

    Hello Everyone,
    I am implementing a table-like design using a Grid Bag Layout and I do not wish to use a J Table. Since a grid bag layout utilizes cells (rows and columns) to create its' design, I was wondering if any of you knew of a way to create borders for the cells inside of a Grid Bag Layout.
    The reason I ask is because, lets say for instance cell (1, 0) may occupy a single J Label. I can easily create a border for this particular cell or label, by calling label.setBorder(). However, what if a single cell occupied two JLabels and they were sort of strangely aligned. I wouldn't be able to call setBorder on the labels anymore because that will just create two separate sets of borders. What I want to do is create a border for that particular cell.
    The final result that I want it to look like is almost identical to a J Table where all the rows and columns have separating lines between all the cells. Something similar to this...

Then add the border to the panel.

  • Creating borders when Cropping

    I am trying to have borders on all fours sides of a video clip, but when I try crop the image, for example on the left and right sides, the borders are gone. Is there anyway to accomplish creating borders on cropped images?

    if i wanted to have a layer of video playing and it to have a border around it I might do it one of several ways.
    crop you image as much as you like, create a coloured rectangle bigger than the video layer. Put this below the video layer in the same group so the edges stick out and it looks like a border.
    or maybe use the Simple border filter on the video layer ( or does the cropping cut this off?) in which case you could try using a rectangle mask on the video layer rather than croppng it.

  • Does Acrobat IX provide the ability to create borders around graphics?

    I am writing a book and want to create a 5 pixel border around some letters that have been scanned in order to define their size.
    I know that Microsoft Word 2007 has that ability. Does Acrobat IX???

    No. Acrobat is not an image or a text editor and should not be used for such editing tasks. And I doubt you can do it in Word, either, since the text in question is a part of an image if it was scanned.

  • StageVideo and rectangle creates borders

    I am implementing StageVideo to my videoplayer and have run into the following little problem;
    When i draw the rectangle for the stagevideo, it appears to sometimes add white top, right or left side borders
    I add the element like this:

    and call resize after the RENDER event
    I have not added any visual elements to the application whatsoever, it's a simple application that initiates netconnection, netstream, plays and attaches stagevideo.
    notice the white border on the left hand side of this screenshot from video playback. If I change the rectangle parameters to 0,0,this.width,this.height and resize the browser window (hence changing this.width and this.height respectively), the borders will change position and size -
    This is a visual element I could really do without, anyone know whats causing them to appear?

    Perhaps under Geometry Options you have fixed size or one of the other options besides unconstrained ticked with a preset size entered?
    You probably want it set to Unconstrained.

  • How to create borders for photos in custom books?

    I have used a photo as a background for a page. Hence, I want the photos I placed on top of it to have a simple, thin, white border. Is there a way to do this? I am using the stock white photo layout and customizing it because I am going to print through Blurb. Any tips are appreciated.

    Underneath the Size & Position settings, there's another settings box called "Photo Border." Set the width, and then click the colour box to change it to white.

  • Can't get cell borders to work

    I'm new Mac user...and I'm having a terrible time working with some spreadsheets that I created in Excel and saved as .numbers docs.
    My current problem is: I can't get cell borders to work. I had an existing Excel spreadsheet and when I saved it as a num.doc, I lost my column headers. I selected table columns for 3 columns. When I did this I lost the existing cell borders. Now when I try to put them back, they appear while I am in the selected rows, so it looks like it worked, but then when I click another cell, the borders all disappear.
    Can anyone help me out?
    Right now I really miss my PC

    Microsoft Office is available for Macs. That might be one solution to your problem and might make this switch from PC to Mac a little easier for you.
    Conversions from one format to another are often not perfect. Numbers and Excel are sufficiently different that you might spend considerable time redesigning an imported Excel spreadsheet to make it look and print as you would like it to in Numbers. With regards to borders, it is possible you are not following the proper steps to create borders. There is definitely a learning curve going from Excel to Numbers. Have you downloaded and read the Numbers Users Manual that is available in the Help menu?

  • InDesign Borders

    I'm facing a major frustration, and I'm wondering if there's already a solution, or if this needs to be a new feature to be implemented in future InDesign versions.
    Adobe Illustrator has a wonderful palette for brushes which can be used as borders for text, etc. However, InDesign seems to be at a standstill in its border palette development since.. well, since the beginning of InDesign. With the exception of some minor corner style developments, designers still seem to be constrained to creating flat, simple multi-lined "Quark" style borders. (e.g.: Thick-Thick, Thick-Thin, etc.) with a propriatory file type: *.inst.
    It's impossible to find designers trading *.inst files online, versus the Illustrator Brush file types, *.ai files which can be found in abundance both for free or charge. My theory behind this is that, at some point in the last 10 years, a developer must have intended to expand the border creation abilities in InDesign, but never received any attention and concentrated on other more important features. Well, I'm here to appeal to the developers! It's time! Time, I say!
    Now, why would I want the Illustrator Brush/Stroke functionality in InDesign?
    Well, it seems like a no-brainer to me; it's a matter of workflow. When I'm designing anything more complicated than a logo or digital illustration, such as a flyer, a book, or any other multi-page piece with text and illustrations, I use InDesign for its pre-press abilities, bleed setups, typography styles, linking, etc. Thus, it just makes sense that if I make a border around a page, I should have a nice, wide variety of borders to choose from, or create ones on the fly from Illustrator *.ai files just like in Illustrator.
    This apparent lack of cross-compatibility means in order to achieve anything more than a flat line or easter-egg smiley faces, I'm limited to creating a pre-shaped border Illustrator and placing it into the page. Resizing becomes a disaster as they end up having to be treated as illustrations rather than borders. "Edit original", "Edit original", "Edit original".
    During my scouring of the net for a solution, I've found many other designers out there with the same question., some dating all the way back to CS2 days.
    Incidentally, while we're at it, heck, I'd love to see the same abilities in Photoshop. I mean why not? It's got vector tools in there as well. There really needs to be more universal palettes in the entire Adobe Creative Suite series. It just makes sense. The unification theory of palettes! Mwahahaha! *clasps his hands* Yes, I ask for too much.. but.. well, it's a good idea, ain't it?
    But seriously. It would be of massive use in InDesign; I'm surprised that it doesn't yet exist ten years into InDesign history. Is there a solution at this point? Or is this more of a feature request?

    I know I'm a trifle late as this question is shown as answered. Anyway, a couple of points. I used to use an app called Graphic Type Designer (GTD for short).

    It could create borders,corner peices, lines and corner effects using specially designed fonts. It would save these designs in WMF (Windows MetaFile) or plain text formats. I used it a lot with PageMaker and for a short while, InDesign as InDesign barely improves on the border selection that came with PM. I had to stop using it as it does not wotk with 64 bit Windows as although it is a 32 bit app, it retains a 16bit installer.
    Anothe alternative I have found today by searching for, and finding some great Illustrator brushes is this site:

    There seems to be a hell of a lot of brushes, borders and patterns for Illustrator on this site alone. As bob says, it is probably best (unles they add a ton more borders and effects in InDesign) to use Illustrator's borders and brush libraries to create custom borders. Hope this helps...

  • Display JTree in browser using JSP

    i have a program that converts xml file in to tree structure(using Swing). When i run this using eclipse then it is working. Swing is an extension of applet , right. I want to embed this in an HTML page(JSP). so that i can display the tree structure. Its gives class not foung error.
    It is not posiible to embed it. I think if it extends an Applet then it will display. But i don't know how to convert that. It gives error if i convert.

    I actually had to do this a few months ago. There are ways to perform this kind display using various distributed object (i.e., using MS Word OLE objects to "interpret" the byte for you, etc.). But this soon got extremely difficult to manage (and I actually had to use Perl/CGI for the majority of it).
    The solution I went with was to implement a "cache" directory on the web server. Basically, the JSP/Servlet can simply check the cache and if file not there, create it from the database. Then send a redirect back to the browser to this newly-created file. The browser will then appropriately open the document. I tested this with both Netscape and IE browsers and common MIME types such as text files, MS Office docs, zip files, PDFs, RTFs.
    Not ideal, but unfortunately the best I came up with.

    There's already some applet code in there, although it's commented out. Did you add that?
    Anyway, the general principle for turning an app into an applet, is to replace the main() method with the Applet's (or JApplet's) init(), start(), and stop() methods. Also you won't be able to read data off the file system; use resources instead. (e.g., java.lang.Class.getResource)
    I'm not sure what this has to do with JSP.

  • How to best display/update images in gallery??

    I'm designing a site for my photography but I'm stuck. I'm new to this and trying to learn, so I'll try to explain clearly. Usually I have problems with things that sound like they should be really simple but end up with unbelievably complex answers, so please keep my beginner status in mind with responses (the complexity itself isn't an issue since i'm sure i could learn whatever needs to be done, just that nothing is more frustrating than an answer of pure code and no plain-english explanation of what is going on).
    the overall design is simple enough: thumbnails to the right (in their own iframe so links can navigate several columns of thumbs, though i'm sure there's a better way to do this, too), large images to be displayed nearish to the center, and some other stuff to the left unrelated to this issue. If all the images were oriented the same way (all landscape or all portrait) i'd have no trouble just creating a frame/iframe of the correct size and call it good enough, but i have about half landscape and half portrait. I considered a square iframe, but then i'd have to create a new html file for every single image (to make the image centered and make the background transparent so i don't get white bits). Is there a way I can do this where i could link just the jpgs to something (centered within a frame, div, whatever) with transparency enabled and save myself the pain of creating dozens of individual html files?
    I've researched a few ideas I had: It doesn't appear to be possible to link directly to a large square div. It also doesn't seem possible to format/style an iframe to meet those requirements without the individual html pages. I've wondered if it would be possible to create two overlapping iframes (one for landscape, one for portrait) and have the link specify which one should show, but i've found nothing helpful on this issue (not even enough to know if it's possible in this context). i even considered throwing out dreamweaver completely and doing a flash-based site, but i was told that this was too hard for a beginner and to not even try (always love a vote of confidence). If I am told the same thing here I may consider scrapping the project entirely because i'm fast running out of options (and i just won't create individual html pages for dozens and dozens of images, it's not worth that kind of tediousness). And this should be obvious, but because a friend suggested it someone else might: no, my work cannot be cropped so they're all the same dimensions and i'd prefer to not modify the images in photoshop to create borders that make them all square (on a slow connection it looks really strange if the image and the "background" load together).
    I hope i gave enough info/details.

    Instead of creating x-number of html pages, just have your menu page dynamically write the html page to the main viewing frame.  If you have different layouts you can have javascript code make decisions based on information you pass to the writing functions from the menu selections.  What you'll want to do is learn how to use the document.write() javascript functionality.  You would build a variable that contains the html code for the page and then use the document.write() function to write that code into the frame.
    As a simplified example, you could have a javascript function in the menu page that you pass the image name to and write that as a page to the "main" frame...

    I was getting ready to scrap the Report Builder altogether
    and move to SQL Server Reporting Services over this issue.
    I'm running 7.0.2 also, that version alone fixed many small
