Creating clouds in a large document

I need to create a slightly cloudy background for a tradeshow graphic. On a small scale, the Filter > Render > Clouds trick works fine. But when I do this on a huge scale... it's not so cute (see attached). Is there a way to create "clouds" on a large scale?

My instructions started with "Working in 16-bit mode...". That meant you should be in 16-bit mode before rendering clouds and enlarging. Converting to 16-bit afterwards will be pointless (but doesn't explain your image becoming "almost a black and white image").
16-bit mode allows much finer gradation of values. When enlarging the clouds image, the interpolated pixel values will have smaller steps in value than is available in 8-bit mode. The smaller steps result in less evident banding and pixelization in the enlargement.
Here's a screenshot contrasting two 1000% enlargements of Clouds, viewed at 100% zoom. The image on the left is the enlargement performed in 16-bit mode. On the right is the enlargement performed in 8-bit mode. The enlarged pixels are far more obvious in the 8-bit version.

  • Creating and organizing one large document from many small "forms"

I'm organizing a symposium and attendees submit abstracts.
I have set up a "form" using Word to distribute to people to fill out and named all the fields, example: "Title," "Firstauthor," "Body." Etc.
They are going to email me completed forms.
I was hoping that it'd be easy to make a drag/drop Script so that I can just drag and drop these files to create big document that would organize the abstracts & attendees into a program.
Word has the "catalog" creation option in the merge-manager. But it uses some sort of tab delimiting scheme for acquiring its data when it's going to be in the form of various fields and the field-names.
At my disposal, I also have File Maker Pro, but doesn't really seem to be able to do what I want to. I don't want to manually enter information (hundreds of attendees).
Could I make a script that would:
tell FileMaker to open a database and create a new entry
tell word to get from a field "FirstName" and copy to clipboard
tell filemaker to paste from clipboard to cell "firstname" of the new entry
....etc. with the other the fields .... and so on? to create the database in file maker. and then in Word, the merge-manager has a user-friendly interface to merge data from a FileMaker database and use the create a catolog feature. Is this too convoluted?
Any suggestions on the best route? any ideas? I don't think what I'm trying to do is all that unusual.
I've never written an applescript, but I have used them and I read about the language. I am generally a quick learner .... I just need to be pointed into the best plan of attack or know what the capabilities are.

    Hi Ettor,
Firstly, if the document is password protected, then I don't know if it could be done. Tatro's documents probably aren't. The first step is to unprotect the fill-in form document with ui scripting:
tell application "Microsoft Word" to activate
    tell application "System Events"
    tell process "Microsoft Word"
    tell menu bar 1
    tell menu "Tools"
    delay 1
    click menu item "Unprotect Document"
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
The document needs to be unprotected for macros to work. from there you can run a saved macro that sets the Save Preference, Save data only for forms. I named my recorded macro "ChangeFormPref". The macro could probably save the file also, but I wanted a simple macro. To run the macro, I found this on the Internet somewhere:
    do Visual Basic "Application.Run \"ChangeFormPref\""
At this point, when you save the document, it's saved as text with AppleScript. Here's the entire script with no error checking:
set dp to (path to desktop as string)
set fs to (dp & "new.txt")
tell application "Microsoft Word" to activate
    tell application "System Events"
    tell process "Microsoft Word"
    tell menu bar 1
    tell menu "Tools"
    delay 1
    click menu item "Unprotect Document"
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    tell application "Microsoft Word"
    activate
    do Visual Basic "Application.Run \"ChangeFormPref\""
    delay 1
    save front document in fs
    end tell
The delays may not be necessary, except for the one that waits for Word to activate. Here, I just placed the new.txt file on the desktop for testing.
Next, AppleScript could easily concatenate the files creating data for a database. I would probably use the new.txt file as a temporary file, read that file, concatenate to a main file, clear the temp file, rewrite to it with Word, etc.. It might be faster though to create all the files first with some naming convention.
I wasn't sure if Tatro was coming back, but am glad someone may use it.
Note that Tatro is using Word X.
Edited: I should give a warning that if you unprotect document and protect it again you lose the data. reprotecting seems to clear the form.

  • Page numbers display as 5 of 1 and 2 of 2121 in a PDF that was created from a Word 2003 document

We merge several Word 2003 documents into 1 larger document that we then convert to PDF.  The page numbers in the Word document display properly - 1 of 21, 2 of 21, 3 of 21, etc.  We then convert that merged document to PDF by right-clicking the filename and choosing "Convert to Adobe PDF".  For those of us with Adobe Acrobat Standard 8.1.3, the page numbers in the converted PDF file display as 1 of 1, 2 of 1, ... 21 of 1.  Those with Acrobat Professional 8.1.3, they display as 1 of 21, 2 of 2121, 3 of 212121, etc., each page adding another total number of pages to the total.  There is no change in the result if using v8.0.0 or 8.1.4  Does anyone have any ideas???

Unless you have a specific reason to upgrade to OFFICE 2007, I would not recommend it. I hate it -- have it on two computers. I have had problems creating PDFs reliably from WORD 2007 and PPT 2007, at least with graphics. The conversion seems to want to split graphics up into several parts rather than leave it as one. It does not happen with WORD 2003 and so assume this is some sort of issue with OFFICE 2007. You can get the graphics fine if you use the MS plugin for PDF creation, but then you have to deal with the MS version of a PDF. If you want to try it on one computer in your office, I would do that before you make the change. However, if what you have meets the need, then why change unless there are specific items that you are looking for and don't have.
OK, that is my opinion. I am sure there are counter arguments. If I had the preference on my newer machines, I would have OFFICE 2003. Bill

What kind of software do you use for the conversion to pdf? Adobe Reader can't create pdf files.

  • Can't print large documents.

For years, we've been printing large documents to our plotter without issue.  Suddenly last week, nothing large will print.
I've seen a few different error messages, and have tried different computers, and different versions of Illustrator, but nothing large will print.
When trying to print, I currently get the following:
I've also seen an error suggesting not enough memory is available, which is bogus.  And I think another error that was more vague, something to the effect of "can't print"
I've setup a clean install of illustrator on a clean windows install, same issue.
I setup an alternate print server with our rip software, same software we've been using for years.  Same error on the alternate server.
Nothing changed, and it's effecting everything here, and new installs.  I don't know what happened, but this is getting critical, we need the ability to print.

    EFI eXpress v. 4.1
This all worked fine until a week ago, so I don't think there should be a hardware software compatibility issue.  The software and hardware were all working fine, and then we got blindsided by this stubborn error that came out of nowhere, won't go away, and has no error or log that gives us any useful information.
It isn't a font issue.  I've created a basic test document that just consists of the word test.  Using this same font, I've had success printing documents that are 37"x79", 39"x75".  But, when I print 39"x79", it fails.  i've not zeroed in on the size that seems to be the cutoff, but I knew that a 37x75 worked, and 40x80 didn't, and 39x79 didn't either.  So, playing around with the numbers I found the above that did work.
Also, using the general epson driver that you can get on epson's site, any print job can be sent without issue.  It's just that anything beyond 90 inches gets cut off.
I suppose this suggests the problem lies with EFI.  But, a clean install of EFI didn't resolve the issue.  What it comes down to for me is, the error is generated from Adobe.  So, at the least, I'd like an explanation from Adobe as to what the error is, since their software is generating it, and giving me no reason why it failed.  Plus, there's no way I can justify to management the cost of bringing in a 3rd party support for the EFI software, unless I have a better reason why the EFI software worked last week, but not this week, so I really need better data out of Adobe as to why it fails.
I currently have a paid case open with Adobe, but they seem to be having difficulty as well, so far it's been a lot of time on hold, and a little bit of "try this, try that, try this", which is getting nowhere.  I need something more methodical to happen, and some actual following of data, or checking of logs, to get some detailed information, hopefully the case will get escalated to someone with a bit more in depth knowledge on these things.
I will keep posting the details here as they emerge, because there's nothing I hate more than a forum thread with a problem I'm experiencing, that doesn't end with an answer.  I think forums should do a better job of either posting a resolution, or purging the cases that don't resolve, to get rid of the useless junk that clogs the internet and wastes people's time searching for answers.

You can create larger documents e.g. Documents To Go (http://itunes.apple.com/ie/app/documents-to-go-office-suite/id317117961?mt=8) allows you to create/read/update word and excel documents, as well as supporting other document types. There is also a 'premium' version of the app : http://itunes.apple.com/ie/app/documents-to-go-premium-office/id317107309?mt=8 .

  • Can't print large document in landscape orientation

I have a large document (16x32") that I am trying to print on a single legal sized page.
I have landscape mode selected in Page Setup, yet when I select Print and tell it to print to a single Legal page (under Paper Handling I select Scale To Fit Paper Size and then select US Legal), it ends up printing in portrait orientation--even though the preview in the Print dialog box has it in landscape.
I have printed this document before (a month or two ago) and it worked fine.  There have been I think 2 updates in the intervening weeks, has one of the updates changed something about printing?
Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Details: Pages 5.1, OS X Mavericks 10.9.1, MacBook Pro (late 2008)

    OK, guys, try this:
    Open Pages.
Creat a new file.  --I picked the template "Blank" (which starts in portrait mode, mind you) in the "Basic" group.
    Go to File->Page Setup.
    Select Paper Size->Manage Custom Sizes.
Click the "+" and create a new custom paper size.  Title it "Really Big Paper" or whatever.
Make the paper size 34 wide by 56 high.  (Again, portrait orientation).  Click “OK”.
Make the paper landscape orientation and click “OK”.
Put something in the file—like a big light gray box (make its Opacity <50% so you don’t waste ink) that fills up the whole page.
    Select File->Print
Click the popup menu that says “Layout” and select “Paper Handling”
Click the box for “Scale to fit paper size” and select “US Legal” as the Destination Paper Size.
    Click the “Print” button.
What do you get?  I get a gray box horizontally across the middle third of a portrait oriented page.  What I want is a page almost entirely filled with gray, which is what would happen if it really printed in landscape mode.
You can fool around with the custom paper size and start with it shorter on width or shorter on height, but if you want to print a document that is large and is wider than it is tall, when you print it on a single page, it will always print **across the middle of a portrait oriented page** and not in landscape mode.
I can repeat this on both my HP and Canon printers.  Same result.  So it isn’t the print driver, unless you think HP and Canon have the same bug in their print drivers (fairly unlikely, I would guess).  You can print to PDF and you get the same result, too.
Again: printing worked fine for me a few weeks (and one or two Pages updates) ago!

  • Query performance - A single large document VS multiple small documents

    Hi all,
What are the performance trade offs when using a single large document VS multiple small documents ?
I want to store xml snippets with similar structure in a container. Is there any benefit while querying, if I use a single large document to store all these snippets against adding each snippet as a different document. Would it degrade the performance when adding an xml snippet each time by modifying an existing document?
How could we decide whether to use a single large document VS multiple small documents?
    Thanks,
    Anoop

    Hello Anoop,
In case you wanted to get a comparison between the storage types for containers, wholedoc and node, let us know.
What are the performance trade offs when using a
single large document VS multiple small documents ?Depends on what is more important to you, performance when creating the container, and inserting the document(s) or performance when retrieving data.
For querying the best option is to go with smaller documents, as node indexes would help in improving query performance.
For inserting initial data, you can construct your large document composed of smaller xml snippets and insert the document as a whole.
If you further want to modify this document changing its structure implies performance penalties; more indicated is to store the xml snippets as documents.
Overall, I see no point in using a large document that will hold all of your xml snippets, so I strongly recommend going with multiple smaller documents.

  • How to convert a large document into a InDesign Book w/Chapters?

    Hello!
I just started a position with a company that has a number of catalogs full of the widgets they sell. Previously the catalog work was outsourced to a company that uses Quark, and the first thing I did when I started was to convert them to InDesign using a 3rd party plugin.
The one I'm working on now is 400+ pages, including a TOC and 2 indexes (words / item nos.), and is currently 4 VERY large files that take 5-10 minutes each to open.
What I'd like to do is split the entire catalog along logical lines into a bunch of 10-50 page documents, then stitch them all back together as Chapters in a Book file. The plan is to have the smaller documents be usable either as stand-alone brochures or as pieces of the big catalog. Once I can get it all organized the way I want, I'll be redoing the TOC and indexes as well.
So, to boil it down to a few questions:
    1. How do I split a large document into smaller pieces?
    2. I have a basic understanding of creating a Book file, but are there any pitfalls I should watch out for when stitching the bits back together?
    3. Is it possible to have page numbering automated so that if I open a chapter on its own the pages will be, say, 1-20; but if I open it in the context of the book file the pages will be, say, 84-104?
    4. Are the page numbering, TOC, and indexing tools flexible enough to where if I modify a section such that it adds or removes pages in that section, the entire book file will restructure to accommodate?
A thousand thanks in advance to all who read this, and to any who respond!

Saving x-number of copies as new names, then chop off the unwanted parts is pretty efficient.
    2. I have a basic understanding of creating a Book file, but are there any pitfalls I should watch out for when stitching the bits back together?
Nothing specific, other than learning the ins and outs of working with book files. For example, if you change a style in one file, you'd want to use the Synchronize feature to propagate the change to the other files, but you'd also need to remember if any change in one file shouldn't be propagated to others, and deselect it in the Synchronize dialog box.
It's a good idea to open all and save all book files before doing any book-wide operation; even better to save the whole directory for safety. Working on open  files gives you some undo powers that working with closed files doesn't.
    3. Is it possible to have page numbering automated so that if I open a chapter on its own the pages will be, say, 1-20; but if I open it in the context of the book file the pages will be, say, 84-104?
The individual files need to be checked and perhaps updated or have their numbering restarted when they're removed from the book file's control. It depends on how you've set up the numbering.
    4. Are the page numbering, TOC, and indexing tools flexible enough to where if I modify a section such that it adds or removes pages in that section, the entire book file will restructure to accommodate?

Both TOC and Index have check boxes to include all files in the current book. You need to update the TOC, and generate the index again with Replace Existing Index checked, after making changes.

  • Loading large documents

I need a way to load large documents without major performance issues.
At present, the best I can find in Swing itself is the PlainDocument class, which has issues once it crosses the size of about 1MB. As it gets closer and closer to 10MB, it gets slower and slower, and even higher just gets unacceptable.
I started off writing a custom implementation of Document, but the need to implement the listener methods bogged me down and I can't progress any further without further help.
I find it hard to believe that nobody would have written a Swing editor that can handle over 10MB of text, but I can't find anything with Google, so...
Has someone out there already tackled this problem?

I think you should create a document which reads the text from the
file whenever the data is requested by getText-method in the document.
You could also use some caching of the previous read text in order to reach a good performance.
For instance you could reserve a buffer (byte-array) of about 500 kb,
which I would split up in 500 arrays of 1000 chars, since 1000 chars should be enough to fill at
least a screen and somewhat above.
I would propose to keep a map for holding these arrays, and coupling them to the
offset in the file from which they are read.
By alligning the offsets from which you read in the file with the size of such an array,
you will never read overlapping parts in your buffer.
You will also need some mechanism for remembering which array is least frequently used or least
recently used and may be replaced by the newly read data once the buffer is full.
You will also need some mechanism for adding or changing data from the file,
since you cannot change the data on the fly in the file. You should use some caching of this
data (perhaps in some other file) and mix this cached data with the cached buffer when the
    getText-method is called.
While saving the new file this data should be mixed with the original file and written to a new file which
will then replace the old file. Afterwards all buffers should be cleaned (especially the change-buffers).
You could adapt some auto-saving mechanism for doing this save after a specified time,
or when the change-buffers are growing to large.
Finally you could also opt to split the read-buffer in a buffer using strong-references to the arrays and
an additional buffer which uses soft- or weak-references to the arrays.
The strong-references will make the first buffer a solid reliable buffer of fixed size (minimum),
while the soft- or weak-references will make the second buffer a more soft buffer which can lose
data when the memory-requirements of the application are high.
This way you get a maximum size buffer when memory-requirements for the application do not claim the
soft-references of the buffer and you will always keep a minimum buffer for the application.
Data will always flow from the solid to the soft buffer and never backwards.

  • Problems with larger documents.

Here's my problem: I am a composer, I need to print my scores (document size is 9x12) but it seems that adobe only supports 8.5x11. What I'm looking to do is to save my 9x12 document as a pdf, and have it actually show up in adobe reader as a 9x12 document so that it can be accurately printed at its intended size. Every time I try to do just that, the document either rescales to accomodate to adobe, or parts of the document get cut off. That's not what I want, I want a 9x12 document. If in the unfortunate case that what I'm trying to do is impossible, please notify me of an alternate universal document reader that will do what I want.

I set up the score for my music in my notation software (finale 2011.) I must then convert the score from finale into a PDF, as there are additional items that I need to add to the score that can't be added from finale. So I export the document from finale as a 9x12 file. I use one of those PDF creators that acts as a printer since Finale 2011 for windows doesn't have direct pdf conversion capabilities. Once the PDF is created, I open it only to see that my large document has been subject to the 8.5x11 parameters of Adobe Acrobat, and much of it has been cropped out. I don't want to rescale, because again, it is a 9x12 document and that is all it will ever be. Is there a better alternative to this process that might yeild the desired outcome?
