Creating database on multi cpu machines

Hello:
I want to issue the create database statements on a machine that has multiple cpu.
Would like to to know what are the parameters if any need to specify in the ora file and anything specific needs to be done in the create database statement and if there are other considerations.
Thanks,

You can utilize there parameters if you have multiple cpu servers.
parallel_max_servers integer 5
parallel_min_percent integer 0
parallel_min_servers integer 0
parallel_server boolean FALSE
parallel_server_instances integer 1
parallel_threads_per_cpu integer 2

  • Interrupt in a multi-cpu machine

    Hi,
I want to know how the interrput is dealed in a multiprocessor environment. Anyone can tell me or point me to the doc. to check?
Will interrupt be sent to different CPU equally or they are given to one default CPU?
    Thanks!
    Yong

I've seen, however that most operating systems like processor affinity and
won't go out of their way to spread threads across CPUs due to CPU cache
synchronization expense. Running two WLS instances on a dual processor
machine will give you more throughput.

  • Performance problem - mutexes with multi-cpu machine

    Hi!
My company is developing multi-threaded server program for
multi-cpu machine which communicates with Oracle database on separate
machine. We use Solaris 7, Workshop 5 CC and pthreads API.
We tested our program on 4 CPU E4500 with 2 CPU E420 Oracle server.
We upgraded E4500 from 4 to 8 CPU and to our surprise instead of
performance improvement we got performance degradation ( 8 CPU runs
    about 5% slower than 4 CPU ).
After a long investigation we found out that under stress load most of the
time our performs lwpmutex related operation.
With truss -c statistics was 160 secs in mutex operations and
about 2 secs was read/write in oracle client side library.
Here is output of truss for example:

    We have a several question:
    1. We always get the same mutex address : 0x7F2F3F60 even with different
binaries. It looks that all threads wait on one and magic
    mutex. Why?
    2. We read in article on unixinsider.com that on Solaris when mutex is
unlocked all the threads waiting on this mutex are waked up. It also looks so

Is there any other solution? Should in improve performance?
    3. We heard that Solaris 8 has better pthreads implementation using a
one-level threading model, where threads are one-to-one with
lwp, rather than the two-level model that is used in the
standard libthread implementation, where user-level threads are
multiplexed over possibly fewer lwps. Are mutexes in this library
behave in "Solaris 7" way or do it put thread to sleep when it unlocks
the mutex? Is it possible to use this library on Solaris 7?
    4. Is there plug - in solution like mtmalloc or hoard for new/delete that change

  • Cannot create database on my local machine

    Hi.
    Thanks in advance.
I currently have SQL 2008 Server R2 installed on my machine and its' working as expected.  With this via Mgmt Studio, I was unable to create a database on my local machine.  I kept getting permissions errors.  No matter what I did I could
    not do anything locally.
To alleviate this I installed SQL Server 2012 Express Mgmt. Studio on my local machine, for the sole purpose of being able to create a local database for testing and learning purposes.  During the install I was not prompted to configure the admin account
or any other similar task so I could not set the sa password.  After the install was complete, when I launched 2012 express mgmt studio and selected my local machine as my server name (using Win authentication) and pressed the Connect button, I got:
"Login failure for user [domain\user].  (Microsoft SQL Server, Error:  18456].  This is the same error I was getting with my 2008 R2 install, under the same circumstances.
Also, the sample databases did not get installed and I'm not sure why.
When I ran the install (.exe), I ran it as Administrator.
I am an Admin on my machine.
I'm only trying to create a local database for testing and learning purposes, but I am unable to find a way to do this.  Can someone let me know what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks.
    Logan

Is that means you are not able to login to SSMS at all?
You tried connecting ssms with this name right .\SQLExpress
If are not able to login to SSMS with any account then reset SA password using below link:

  • Multi CPU Solaris.

    Hi,
Is there a recommended number of Weblogic instances when running on a
Multi-CPU machine with more than 8, in this particular case - 28.
The server behaves really bad if I only run one instance there is too
much time spent in the treads waiting to obtain a lock for accessing a
    SyncronizedMap (in
    webblogic.kernel.ResettableThreadLocal.currentStorage()) and the CPUs
    are underutilized.
After a few experiments we found out that 1 instance per 4-6 CPUs is OK,
but I was wondering whether you could recommend something. Also since
there's limit of 2GB per JVM if we wanted to utilize more then there is
    no choice.
    Thanks,

Yes that what my problem is.
    Thanks a lot.

    Dimitri,
Is this supported or is it really a hack?
Because I could still run multiple JVMs and when we want to utilize more memory we
are forced to do that anyway as the limit is just below 2GB/JVM and if you have even
16GB that already automatically means 7-8 JVMs which usually does the trick.

    Thanks Adam,
Actually it is true that most of our requests run on non-weblogic threads.
We have a thread pool that runs in the WLS JVM and it is created by a startup
class and afterwards is activated by sending JMS messages to a monitoring
thread that dispatches the requests. The clients connect to a Session EJB and
that session EJB launches the requests and afterwards the clients get their
    results via JMS.
We easily support multiple JVMs on one physical server but if it wasn't the
performance hit from accessing that collection we'd prefer to have as few JVMs
as possible as this would also drive down the context switches and the total
number of threads in the system.
    All the Best,
    Deyan

    Deyan,
Can you tell us a bit more about your application. That map in
ResettableThreadLocal shouldn't be hit except for non-WL threads. It is
unusual that this would be a source of contention.
That said, I know of many people who have been successful running multiple
server instances on a single big machine. I think that it is a great
solution if your application is amenable to it.
    Cheers!

there just have ONLY ONE CORE %sys 100
the top command show average of all cpu core sys% usage
when the one core sys% is 100%
the system are very slow .
e.g: when I create a database instance used for a long time . over 2 hours
but generally it will be done at most 1 hours or shorteris any type of OS virtualization involved in this environment?

  • Repeating Job Can Hang In "Started" Status On Multi-Cpu Windows Machine

    Dear All,
I am struck with a know Bug 3092358 "Repeating Job Can Hang In "Started" Status On Multi-Cpu Windows Machine". The Work around is mentioned in Note:307448.1 in metalinks.
In the above doc for the Fix-3 Another option that worked is to try:
Upgraded to EM 9.2.0.6 and applied the Apr05 CPU.
I searched in metalinks to get patch to upgrade EM from 9.2.0.1 to 9.2.0.6. But not able to find can some tell me where can i get this patch.
    OS: windows 2003 server
    DB:9.2.0.1
    OWB :9.2
Pls,do let me know if there any other work arounds,
    Thanks for your help.
    Rgds,
    Satya.

While I dunno the specifics of NT threads, one way to spread 1 thread across multiple processors is by simply round robining the thread between the processors over time. i.e. Thread A spends 0.5seconds executing on cpu 1, for the next 0.5 s the thread is moved over to cpu2 and executed there, then it is moved back to cpu1 and so on...
I think the Convex SPP used this model, the motivation perhaps being to spread load evenly among all cpus. Made sense in a multi-user multi-cpu system with a real fast bus.
    cheers
    -Ragu
You know you've been spending too much time on the computer when your friend misdates a check, and you suggest adding a "++" to fix it.

  • Getting ORA-32700 while creating database

I am getting following error when creating the database :
ORA-32700 error occurred in DIAG Group Service
The error description is as follows :
Cause: An unexpected error occurred while performing a DIAG Group Service operation.
Action: Verify that the DIAG process is still active. Also, check the Oracle DIAG trace files for errors.
The setup is as follows :
    Database : Oracle 9i Rel 2.
    OS : IBM AIX 4.3.3
We are trying to create the database from sqlplus/dbca. It seems that in the database creation process it is throwing the error while it is trying to create the control files.
    listener.ora :
    LSNR_TSEDMDB2 =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = prcsmbk1)(PORT = 1522))
    TNSNAMES.ORA
    LISTENER_TSEDMDB2 =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = prcsmbk1)(PORT = 1522))
We have IBM HACMP Cluster setup on 3 machines. This machine (prcsmbk1) on which I am getting the error while creating the database is part of that HACMP cluster. While installing the Oracle database software also it gave me a list of the 3 machines which are in HACMP cluster. We are not planning to setup RAC, but still it seems like while creating the database control files Oracle is trying to perform some group service operation.

Thanks a lot for all your responses. We found the issue. The issue was that when we installed 9i we selected Enterprise option which installed RAC also. And after that when we were trying to create database Oracle was thinking that we are trying to create database in RAC env. and most likely it was trying to create/sync the control files on all the machines in the cluster.
The sequence of events were as below :
    1. We have 8i installed on this machine
    2. We installed 9i (9.2.0.1.0) using the same ORACLE_BASE but different ORACLE_HOME. We didn't select "Custom Install". We selected "Enterprise install" option
    3. We installed new installer (2.2.0.18.0 ) and then 9i patch (9.2.0.4.0)
    4. While creating the database (manually & through DBCA) we were getting ORA-32700
    5. We tried to uninstall (using OUI 2.2.0.18.0) 9i (including the patch) completely but it never succeeded. We noticed that when we started uninstall it did show progress for about 20 minutes and after that it didn't show any progress. It was not taking any CPU cycles and It was not writing to the log file either. Basically we were never able to cleanly uninstall 9i. We tried almost 2 to 3 times.
    6. Then we installed 9i using a new ORACLE_BASE and this time we selected "Custom Install" and we did not install RAC. This is successful
    7. Then we installed new installer (2.2.0.18.0 ) and we tried to install the 9i patch (9.2.0.4.0) using this new installer but it never succeeded. Then we tried to install the 9i patch (9.2.0.4.0) using the old installer version (2.2.0.11.0) and it was also successful.
    8. Then we tried to create database using DBCA and it was successful and then we dropped the database which was created using DBCA and then we created it manually through SQLPLUS and this was fine too.
So basically what we learned from this exercise is that if we are installing 9i on a machine which is part of a cluster and if we don't plan to setup RAC then we shouldn't install RAC and we should do a custom install. I wish there was a option in create database stmt to tell Oracle that though we are creating database on a machine which is part of a cluster environment but we don't intend to setup RAC.
And other thing which is still a mystery is that why does the uninstall never completes successfully. One question on this : We were using the installer version 2.2.0.18.0 to uninstall the 9i software. Do we need to use the older version (2.2.0.11.0) of the OUI?

  • 9.0.1 create database using dbca fails

Solaris 8, 64-bit SPARC, 528mb RAM, 2 SCSI 9gig. Development box with no other users/processes running except Sendmail.
Installed Oracle 9.0.1 on machine from CDs with no problems, Attempting to create database using Database Configuration Assistant.
Creating 'general purpose' database using dbca with generally default parameters. Progress bar gets to 50% done, "creating & starting instance" is checked in progress window.
CPU utilization goes to 100% and nothing happens for hours. Eventually have to cancel dbca. No control files or init.ora created, (pfile directory is empty) there are a bunch of oracle processes left running which have to be killed.
I've tried this several times, moved stuff to different drives and/or filesystems, no luck. Have 5 gig available on /u01 where the database should install, and 8 gig available on /u02 where the .dbf's go.
If I had any hair left, I'd pull it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

I am getting this same problem: The DBCA gets to the point where it is installing the database and starting the instance (it says 51% of the way through), and then it just sits there doing nothing. I noticed when I installed Oracle (9.2.0) when it got to the point of the configuration assistants, there was mention of a listener not being able to start and the installer assuming it was already started (the listener that is). When the DBCA started right after, it stalled out at 51%.
I aleady had the Sun JDK installed, but am assuming this is not the issue since the install got that far. Can someone please advise a course of action so that I can trouble shoot this? I am very very new to this side of Oracle. Any assistance is greatly appreciated and will be passed along to others in turn.
    Thanks,
    BillR

  • Installation stuck at Create database schema Phase 13 of 27

    Hi
I am installing the Netweaver 7.01 SP3 and have already removed it completely after getting stuck at the same installation step. Do not know what is going wrong. A small extract of the log is shown below. Any advice on how to proceed will be helpful. I know when einstalling it has to be removed completely which I did using uninstallation and then clean up tool. But again it is stooping at the same step. I had let it run more almost two days but of no use. My system configuration is good enough with 2GB RAM etc.

Guess you are talking about sapinst.log file. Below are the last few lines after which it did not proceed
Do see the last step create DB schema....... The previos log was from sapinst_dev.log
Oliver I have a doubt could it be becuase of the host name.
The host name of my machine is "skumar278-1" with DNS domain name for SAP system "asiapac.globalcsc.net"
Could this be the reason for the problem i am facing i.e installation getting stuck at phase 13 Create DB schema.... Other than this I cannot see anything else which can go wrong.. Do have the DHCP server available..
The page file as per the ram settings i.e for 2 GB should be 3072 so I have set it to the same. Though
    the prerequisite page shows
"For the selected services at least 7138 MB swap space are recommended. Current value: 2851 MB. (Updated 2005-06-24)"
    Can this be the reason???
Also I just looked at the services file.. there are about about 4-5 different files with the name services .3 services.4 ...  services.5 etc als there is no entry for port 3900 3600 & 8000.. .. do not know what to do... Please suggest..

  • Failed to create Database Link in OWB 9.2 for remote SQL Server

    Hi,
I have to create Database link for connecting to SQL server in a different machine.I am using OWB 9.2 and XP.
Dataserver is the machine name which is running SQL Server
I included follwing lines in TNSNAMES.ORA file
    hsodbc.world =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = dataserver)(PORT = 1433)
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID=hsodbc.world)
    (HS =OK)
I included follwing lines in Listener.ORA file
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = dataserver)(PORT = 1433)
    (SID_DESC=
    (SID_NAME=hsodbc.world)
    (ORACLE_HOME=C:\ora92)
    (PROGRAM=hsodbc)
I included follwing lines in inithsodbc.ORA file
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = testdsn
    HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = 0
While creating new database link I gave the follwing values
    DB Link Name : Mylink
SQL * Net Connect String: hsodbc
    User Name: sa
    password:<my password>
Then clicked "Create and Test" button to get the follwing error message
    Testing...
    Failed.
ORA-12154 TNS:could not resolve service name
*Cause: The service name specified is not defined correctly in the TNSNAMES.ORA file
*Action: Make the following checks and correct the error:
    - Verify that a TNSNAMES.ORA file exists on your repository server
in the proper place and is accessible. See the operating
system specific manual for details on the required name and location.
    - Check to see that the service name exists in one of the
TNSNAMES.ORA files and add it if necessary.
    - Make sure there are no syntax errors in the file.
Particularly look for unmatched parentheses or stray characters.
Any error in a TNSNAMES.ORA file makes it unusable. See
Chapter 4 in the SQL*Net V2 Administrator's Guide. If possible,
regenerate the configuration files using the Oracle Network Manager.
Is there anything wrong in my configuration. Please help me in getting out of this problem.
    Thanks in advance
    Andy

    Hi Mark,

    Hi Shyam,
I really dont understand what you have asked?
If your question is can we start more than one database at the same time then the answer to that is yes but provided to have enough resources on your server to support running of two or more different databases on the same machine.
