Creating methods in an applet

I am confused on how to create methods in an applet. I know how to create them in an application. However, if an applet, do you create the methods in the Class Header, after the init() method, or the paint (Graphics g) method.
I am trying to create a method called StudentName where the Student name and class.
I originally had the method in the class body but I received error messages -- mainly because I hadn't started the paint method yet.
thanks for your help.
Here is a sample of the code I am using:
import javax.swing.*;
import java.awt.Graphics;
public class ClassAverageApplet extends JApplet
      String first,second, third, fourth,fifth, name, className;
      double a,b,c,d,e,f, sum;
    public void init()
      ClassAverageApplet student = new ClassAverageApplet();
      name = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Student's name please");
      className = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Class");
      first = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Please enter first Grade");
      a = Double.parseDouble(first);
      second = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("please enter second Grade");
      b = Double.parseDouble(second);
      third = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("please enter Third Grade");
      c = Double.parseDouble(third);
      fourth = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("please enter Fourth Grade");
      d = Double.parseDouble(fourth);
      fifth= JOptionPane.showInputDialog("please enter Fifth Grade");
      e = Double.parseDouble(fifth);
      f = (a + b + c + d + e)/5;
      sum = a + b + c + d + e;
   public void paint(Graphics g)
      public void StudentName()
         g.drawString("Student:    " + name,25,25);
         g.drawLine(25,25,70,25);
         g.drawString("Class:      " + className,25,40);
         g.drawLine(25,40,60,40);
       g.drawRect(15,10,300,150);
   if(f  > 89)
     student.StudentName();
//I am replacing these next four statements with the StudentName method
   // g.drawString("Student:    " + name,25,25);
   // g.drawLine(25,25,70,25);
   // g.drawString("Class:      " + className,25,40);
   // g.drawLine(25,40,60,40);
    g.drawString("Your final grade is an A ",25,50);
    g.drawString("The sum of your grades out of 500 points is " + sum ,25,60);
    g.drawString("The grade average is " + f,25,70);
    g.drawString("Here are your grades for the class",70,90);
    g.drawLine(70,90,255,90);
    g.drawString("First Grade:    " + a,25,110);
    g.drawLine(25,110,90,110);
    g.drawString("Second Grade:   " + b ,25,120);
    g.drawLine(25,120,90,120);
    g.drawString("Third Grade:    " + c,25,130);
    g.drawLine(25,130,90,130);
    g.drawString("Fourth Grade:   " + d ,25,140);
    g.drawLine(25,140,90,140);
    g.drawString("Fifth Grade:    " + e,25,150);
    g.drawLine(25,150,90,150);
    }

i don't think you know what you're talking about. there's no difference between the way you write an applet or application. one has an init() method one has main(String[] args) method. one extends applet, but i won't tell you which.
i'm sure you need to define half of your methods inside the paint() method and the other half inside the init() method. it does matter what goes where as long as it's half and half. the important thing is to make sure you have an even number of methods, otherwise your applet will behave oddly.

  • Help with creating an animated java applet...

    Hello, everyone! I'm working on a homework assignment for my Intro to Java class, and I'm having a problem I've never run into before. My assignment is to create a animated Java applet which displays an image of an alien spaceship which travels in diagonal lines across the applet area. My main problem is that when I try to compile my code, I get three "cannot find symbol" errors about my variable "alien." I can't figure out why declaring it as a class variable hasn't solved my problem. The errors pop up for the repaint() method, as well as the pane.add and the paintIcon. Here's my code:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.Timer;
    class DrawAlien extends JPanel
    public class Alien extends JApplet implements ActionListener
      ImageIcon alien;
      public void init()
        Container pane = getContentPane();
        alien = new ImageIcon(getClass().getResource("alien.gif"));
        pane.setBackground(Color.black);
        pane.add(alien);
        Timer timer = new Timer(30, this);
        timer.start();
      public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
        alien.repaint();
    }I've only posted the section which I think is relevant to my problem, but I can post the rest if anyone thinks it's necessary.
    I'm aware that the code isn't ready yet in several other ways, but I don't think I can move on until I figure out what's up with the "alien" variable. I don't need anyone to write code for me or anything like that, I just lack perspective here. A couple hints in the right direction would be invaluable. Thanks!

    You can?t add ImageIcon into pane, you can do like below.
    alien = new ImageIcon(getClass().getResource("alien.gif"));
        pane.setBackground(Color.black);
        JLabel label = new JLabel(alien);
        pane.add(label);

  • Problem with using isAuthenticate method in my applet

    Hi everyone
    I want to be sure that everytime that I select my applet the secure channel has been opened. I found isAuthenticate method from SecurityService Interface and I think that I can use this method in my applet's select method for this purpose. But when I declare an object as this type like this:
    SecurityService Objsecurity;
    to use its isAuthenticate method , I'm able to build my code and make the cap file successfully but I recieve error 6F F6 while loading my applet, And I can't find the meaning of this error in GP.
    I'll appreciate it if anyone could tell me how can I use this method in my applet .
    And the other question is is there any other way to find out the authentication have been done or not?
    Best Regards
    Shili

    Hi Pedja,
    Thanks for the prompt reply.
    I have been following the link you mentioned to create ADF security and successfully implementedthe first part where if i directly give any internal page url it redirects me back to login page.
    Instead of using weblogic-sql authenticator, i wanted to manually authenticate the user in loginbean.java where i check the username passowrd against the db.
    I had also implemented the method to access username,password mentioned in the following thread
    Re: ADF security on my jspx  page as login page
    Insted of using authentication.login, i am calling the db method to do the validation.
    The thing is after my db validation it does redirect me to the success page(menu.jspx). but when i click links on menu.jspx it redirects me back to login page.
    so i understand that user is not yet set in the session.
    I am stuck at the point how do i code the login.jspx, currently my login.jspx does not have any j_security_check and i think this is what is creating the problem.
    while searching for adding jsecurity in jspx i landed on the blog of 2006 and started using that.
    Can you please point me to some link which explains how to code login.jspx , i have been trying hard for couple of days.
    Thanks again

  • Creating multiple Threads in applets

    Hi, I need some help creating multiple threads in applets. If you look at the simple code example below youll see that it uses one thread that calls the findTarg() method that gives its sleep() a value and makes the oval find its new target.
    What I want to know is how do I create a new thread in this applet? So for example I could call a findTarg2() method from within a new thread that sets its sleep() to a faster or slower value and starts at the same time as findTarg().
    Hope that makes sense.
    <applet code="thread.class" height=400 width=400>
    </applet>
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class thread extends java.applet.Applet implements Runnable {
    int x = 200;
    int y = 200;
    int xTarg;
    int yTarg;
    int sleeper;
    boolean go;
    Thread first;
    public void start(){
    if(first == null); {
    first = new Thread(this);
    first.start();
    public void run(){
    while (first != null) {
    findTarg();
    try {
    Thread.sleep(sleeper);
    } catch (InterruptedException e) { }
    public void findTarg(){
    if(go == true){
    sleeper = 10;
    if(x < xTarg)x++;
    if(x > xTarg)x--;
    if(y < yTarg)y++;
    if(y > yTarg)y--;
    repaint();
    if((x == xTarg)&&(y == yTarg))go = false;
    public boolean mouseDown(Event evt, int x, int y) {
    xTarg= x;
    yTarg= y;
    go = true;
    return true;
    public void paint(Graphics g) {
    g.setColor(Color.black);
    g.fillOval(x,y,20,20);
    }

    I've found another example and this time it extends JApplet. I'm sorry I can't help you more, but I'm new as well.

  • Multiple create methods of entity beans in single transcation

    Hi,
    I have some entity beans with CMR. I am managing these entity beans with a Stateful session bean whose transaction type is Container Managed for all its methods.
    In one particular method of this Session bean I am calling two entity bean's create method. i.e I am creating two entity beans through home.create() methods. There are two home.create() methods one after another inside a try catch block.
    I want that the entire operation be under just one transcation so i have also given the transaction attribute as Required for all methods of Session bean and Entity Beans.
    However if i pass invalid parameters to second create method so that it generates exception then still the first create statement is successful and database is updated.
    what i want is that the first create also should be roll backed.
    How can i acheive this through Container Managed Transaction Session Bean?

    o In CMT transactions are automatically rolled back only when RuntimeExceptions
    are thrown. What kind of exception is thrown in your case?

  • Trying to Imitate the html POST  method with an applet

    I am trying to imitate the POST method with an applet, so that I can eventually send sound from a microphone to a PHP script which will store it in a file on a server. I am starting out by trying to post a simple line of text by making the PHP script think that it is receiving the text within a POST-ed file. The reason I am doing things this way is in part because I am, for the time being, limited to a shared server without any support for servlets or any other server side java.
    The code I am trying is based in part on an old thread found elsewhere in this forum, concerning sending data to a PHP file by imitating the POST method:
    link:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=530399&messageID=2603608
    someone named "harmmeijer" provided most of the answers on that thread. If that person is still around hope they take a look at this,also I have some questions to clarify what they said on the other thread..
    My first attempt at code is below. The applet is in a signed jar file and is trying to pass a text line to the PHP script in the same directory and on the same server that the applet came from. It is doing this by sending header information that is supposed to be identical to what an html form would send if it was uploading a .txt file with the line of text within it. The applet displays one button. When you press it, it sucessfully starts up the postsim method (defined at the end), which is supposed to send the info to the PHP script at the server.
    I have two questions:
    1) I know that the PHP script is starting up, because it prints out a few messages depending on what happens. However, the script does not recognize any file coming down the line, so it does not save anyting on the server, and prints out a message saying the no file was uploaded.
    Any idea what might be going wrong? I'm not getting any error messages from the applet. I've tried a few different variations of the 'header' information contained in the line:
    osToServer.writeBytes("--****4353\r\nContent-Disposition: form-data; name=\"testfile\"; filename=\"C:testfile.txt\"\r\nContent-Type: text/plain\r\n");
    The commented out line below it shows one variation (which was given in the thread mentioned above).
    2) You'll notice that I've commented out the two lines having to do with the input line:
    //InputStream isFromServer;
    and
    //isFromServer = uc.getInputStream();
    The reason is that the program crahes whenever I put the latter line in - to the extent that Opera closes down the JVM and then crashes when I tried to exit it.. I must be doing something horribly wrong there! I first tried using isFromServer = new DataInputStream(uc.getInputStream());
    becuase it was consistent with the output stream, but that caused the same problem.
    Here's the code:
    public class AudioUptest1 extends Applet{
    //There are a few spurious things defined in this section, having to do with the fact the microphone data is evenuatly going to be sent. haven't yet insterted code to get input from a microphone.
    AudioFormat audioFormat;
    TargetDataLine targetDataLine;
    SourceDataLine sourceDataLine;
    DataOutputStream osToServer;
    //InputStream isFromServer;
    URLConnection uc;
    final JButton captureBtn = new JButton("Capture");
    final JPanel btnPanel = new JPanel();
    public void init(){
    System.out.println("Started the applet");
    try
    URL url = new URL( "http://www.mywebsite.com/handleapplet.php" );
    uc = url.openConnection();
    //Post multipart data
    uc.setDoOutput(true);
    uc.setDoInput(true);
    uc.setUseCaches(false);
    //set request headers
    uc.setRequestProperty("Connection", "Keep-Alive");
    uc.setRequestProperty("HTTP_REFERER", "http://applet.getcodebase");
    uc.setRequestProperty("Content-Type","multipart/form-data; boundary=****4353");
    osToServer = new DataOutputStream(uc.getOutputStream());
    //isFromServer = uc.getInputStream();
    catch(IOException e)
    System.out.println ("Error etc. etc.");
    return;
    //Start of GUI stuff
    captureBtn.setEnabled(true);
    //Register listeners
    captureBtn.addActionListener(
    new ActionListener(){
    public void actionPerformed(
    ActionEvent e){
    captureBtn.setEnabled(false);
    //Postsim method will send simulated POST to PHP script on server.
    postsim();
    }//end actionPerformed
    }//end ActionListener
    );//end addActionListener()
    add(captureBtn);
    add(btnPanel);

    //These buffers might be made larger.

    Hi All,
    I was trying to write a signed applet that helps the
    user of the applet to browse the local hard disk and
    select a file from the same. The JFileChooser class
    from Swing is what I used in my applet. The problem
    is with the policy file. I am not able to trace the
    exact way to write a policy file which gives a total
    access to read,write,delete,execute on all the drives
    of the local hard disk.
    I am successful in signing the applets and performing
    operations : read,write,delete & execute on a single
    file but failing to grant permission for the entire
    file.
    Any help would be highly appreciated.Which policy file are you using? there might be more than one policy file.
    also, u have to specify the alias of the signed certificate in the policy file to grant the necessary priviledges to the signed applet.

  • How to override the create method invoked by a create form?

    Hello everyone, I'm using ADF Faces and have the next question:
    How can I override the create method which is invoked by a create form to preset an attribute in the new row (the preset value is not fixed, I have to send it to the method as a parameter as it is obtained using an EL expression)?
    In the ADF guide I read how to override a declarative method (Section 17.5.1 How to override a declarative method), but this explains how to do it with a method that is called by a button. I don't know how to do the same with a method which is called automatically when the page is loaded.
    I also tried overriding the view object's createRow() method to receive a parameter with the preset values but it didn't work, I believe that was because the declarative create method is not the same as the view object's createRow. This caused the form to display another row from the viewobject and not the newly created one (I also set the new row into STATUS_INITIALIZED after setting the attribute).
    Well, I hope my problem is clear enough for somebody to help me.
    Thank you!

    Hello,
    I'm not sure you can do it with standard generated Create Form.
    In your view object you'll need to create your own create method with parameters, publish it to client interface and invoke instead of standard generated create action in page definition.

    >>Can I have a pack path in the XmlWriter.Create() method?
    No you can't. Pack URIs are resource identifiers and the XmlWriter.Create method accepts an output file path and this path is relative to the directory of the running executable (.exe), i.e. the method simply creates a file on the disk.
    Whether this file is actually resides in your project folder or not doesn't matter at all as far as the XmlWriter is concerned.

  • Using ADF View object create method in Data Action

    I need to know how to create a new row in an application module method and get the attributes from the ADF input form.
    If i Drag drop the create method in the data action form it is working fine. But how to do this programmatically, I have a need where i need to execute a query on another view object and set the create method.
    Thanks.

    Steven:
    (My application does not need to show all records and provide Edit/ Remove buttons at row level, navgational buttons and Create button for inserting new record. Instead, I would just open a blank record for entry, and commit)
    As per your post, I followed the following steps (action class) to insert blank record:
    DCBindingContainer bindings = actionContext.getBindingContainer();
    DCControlBinding binding = bindings.findCtrlBinding("Id");
    Row row = binding.getRowIterator().createRow();
    row.setNewRowState(row.STATUS_INITIALIZED);
    RowSetIterator rs =(RowSetIterator)
    binding.getRowIterator();
    rs.insertRow(row);
    End Results: It works fine and a new blank record is created. The only problem is <html:errors/> in JSP throws error for the first time. I do not want to elliminate error object from JSP.
    Please help!
    Thanks in advance

    Hi all,
    Can anyone help me out to solve an issue calling a css user created method from a jspx page.
    Note: The css method is not the default css method. It needs to be called using 'styleClass' attribute in any tag.

    I am not an expert in CSS so I don't know what a css method is. However, CSS can be applied to components via EL accessing a managed bean that returns the sytle text

  • Get row id after EJB create method.

    Hi,
    does any one know how to get an id of new created by CMP ejb row? When I create new object it's id is 0, when i call ejb create it creates new row in DB and crates new ID by increasing the old one, but how can I get this new ID after create has finished?
    Now I have to look equals by some fields object in DB after creation, looks ugly.

    So here is my CMP :

    As you can see I'm using xdoclets.
    Suppose I need to create new row of this object :
    Dividend d = new Dividend();
    // fill dividend by values here but do not set it's id it is 0 before creation
    // SQL server will set it automaticly
    Object ref = context.lookup("DividendLocal");
    DividendLocalHome dividendLocal = (DividendLocalHome) ref;
    dividendLocal.create(dividend)
    I create new row of dividend in my DB and want to get an ID of the new created row, I thought that dividend object will get this ID after creation automaticly, but no, his id is 0.
    so here id will be 0 :
    dividendLocal.create(dividend);
    int id = dividend.getId(); // 0
    and if I write this
    dividendLocal.create(dividend).getId();
    I get :

  • Complex data type to application service create method(CRUD)(Urgent)

    Hi Experts,
    I have created an entity service with remote persistency(Web service).i am mapping the entity service CRUD methodes to web service methodes and i am calling these CRUD methodes form the corresponding applicaion service CRUD methodes.With out complex data types both sevices are working  fine.I have tested them in the service browser.
    Later I have created a complex data type in the entity service and mapped it to web service.But when i am creating the application service create(CRUD) method for this entity service the complex data type which i have created in the entity service is not being shown as possible input attributes of the application service create method.Due to this i am not able to pass this complex attribute form the application service create method to the entity service create method.
    Plz tell me how can i resilve this issue.(Urgent)
    Thanks

    Hi Sampath,
    Please check SAP note 1004108. I think the issue you describe is one of the limitations described in this note.

  • Initializing Attributes in create() method

    We're currently using the BC4J framework within the Struts context. I'm trying to initialize non-constant attributes (e.g., current date) in the create(AttributeList) method of an xxxEntityImpl class, but when I try to commit the transaction, it fails.
    I know the problem has to do with the fact that BC4J (within the Struts context, at least) creates an emtpy Entity object when the user selects the "new" link, and uses this entity to populate the entry form, then creates a new entity when the form is posted. (This also causes the wasted sequence value, but we've worked around that issue.) When any attributes are set in the create() method, the first entity is added to the pending transaction because it has changed. However, we only want the second entity (created on form post) in the transaction. Is there any work around for this?
    Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Patrick

    You MUST provide an organizatation name. There is a system entity adapter on the Users data object. You cannot avoid populating this.
