Creating (POST) an entity via a navigation property?

Hi All,
Let's say we have a model that has an Employees entityset, and for a given employee, you can navigate to a CurrentCarParkingSpot entity (it's an example not reality).
e.g. Employees('00123456')/CurrentCarParkingSpot would pull up the current CarParkingSpot against the Employee.
Now if the employee didn't have a CarParkingSpot, and I want to create a new CarParkingSpot for this employee, you would think I could POST a standard CarParkingSpot payload to Employees('00123456')/CurrentCarParkingSpot and it should create a new CarParkingSpot against employee (assuming I get the employee key in the GW code). However, when I try this, the framework doesn't even call my code, and it's almost like Gateway does not support creation via a navigation property. PUT works, just not POST.
Note - If I post the same payload directly to /CarParkingSpots, it works fine.
e.g. The payload looks like:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<entry xml:base="http://server.local/sap/opu/odata/sap/ZEXAMPLE/" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" xmlns:m="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/08/dataservices/metadata" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/08/dataservices">
  <id>http://server.local/sap/opu/odata/sap/ZEXAMPLE/CarParkingSpot</id>
  <title type="text">CarParkingSpot</title>
  <category term="ZEXAMPLE.CarParkingSpot" scheme="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/08/dataservices/scheme"/>
  <content type="application/xml">
   <m:properties>
   </m:properties>
  </content>
</entry>
So the key question: Is creation (POST) via Navigation Properties supported in GW, and if it is, do you need to alter the payload at all (note - I've tried changing the id and text above to align with navigation property)?
FYI - I've been testing via Gateway Client, and getting successful creation by using "Use as request" from an existing specific Employees('another id')/CurrentCarParkingSpot and removing all id's in the POST payload.
Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt,
This is a limitation of GW, not OData. If you peruse some non-SAP OData resources you will find mention of posting to navigations.
The OData 4.0 spec states:
To create an entity in a collection, the client sends a POST request to that collection's URL. The POST body MUST contain a single valid entity representation.
An entity may also be created as the result of an Upsert operation.
If the target URL for the collection is a navigation link, the new entity is automatically linked to the entity containing the navigation link.
The GW framework requires you to POST to a canonical URI, i.e. unnavigated direct address.
In my view navigated POST should be supported by GW otherwise it imposes unrealistic design issues, e.g. you now have to include the key of a parent into a child entity to satisfy your requirement.
There are other reasons why it's desirable to POST to the navigation endpoint.
1 - As the navigation points get longer, the need to add more key properties to the endpoint arises:
e.g. for myservice/entityset1(1)/entityset2(2)/siblings(3)/classifications, the classifications entity needs three properties that probably aren't anything like the canonical URI.
This will, at code level mean there are going to be divergences in the access methods that don't need to be present.
2 - The canonical URI may not be addressable. In the above example, classifications is not likely to be something that has any context outside of a navigated path,so a canonical URI for posting one cannot be established.
I don't know why SAP haven't allowed this as the runtime components certainly have the potential to expose the navigation context if the POST request was allowed in.
In the interim, it might be possible design a model that would allow pseudo-navigation posting by using a batched request, so I may have a look into this.

Ron.

  • Error while testing via WS Navigator.

    Hi,
    My scenario is SOAP>PI>FTP.
    I was trying to post the data via WS Navigator tool.
    I have generated wsdl URL as per the forum comments. http://host:port /XISOAPAdapter/MessageServlet?channel=:s:c
    Also I can see when we do display WSDL in ID object, it will also generate a wsdl url with http://host:port /<alphanumeric number>. When we use the system generated wsdl url, the WS Navigator can recognize the sender interface and request for input parameter and post the data and the message processed successfully. But this url cannot be used for positing the data via any other SOAP UI.
    I would like to know, why WS navigator cannot recognize the wsdl URL which is generated in the soap address HTTP port tab of the WSDL file.
    Any pointers regarding this will be very much helpful
    Thanks
    Ray.

    PI generating WSDL  is not able to test in XMLSPY. But I tested the same wsdl works in SOAPSONAR. Manually generating WSDL works in all the tools.  I think the bug might be in some tools to interpret WSDL properly at this time.

    Regards,
    Raghul

    I know this is an old thread, but when doing it either way you guys described, I get:
    "The foreign key component 'FixedDepositDetail' is not a valid navigation property on type 'PersonDetails'.
    Verify that it has not been explicitly excluded from the model and that it is a valid primitive property."
    I had my own one-to-many relationship, but for the sake of not involving new items, it mirrors this setup from above:
    public class PersonDetails
    { [Key]
    public int PersonId { get; set; }
    public String PersonName { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<FixedDepositDetails> FixedDepositDetail { get; set; }
    } public class FixedDepositDetails
    [Key]
    public int Id { get; set; } public int? Person_Id { get; set; } [ForeignKey("Person_Id")]
    public PersonDetails PersonDetails { get; set; } public FixedDepositDetails FixedDepositDetail { get; set; }
    Any ideas on how this setup should work, or is this what you guys have?

    Hi All,
    Just wondering if it is possible to create a new schedule via the Metadata Navigator Web interface? What security rights do you need? Is this even possible? I have logged in as SUPERVISOR and It still looks like I can't do it.

    You can't. To create a new schedule, use the Operator or Designer tool.

  • Error Extending the OAEntityImpl class when creating a BC4J  Entity Object

    I have created an EO based on an Oracle Apps table and extended the OAEntityDefImpl, OAEntityCache and OAEntityImpl classes as specified in the OA Framework Developers Guide when creating EO's via the BC4J wizard.
    When I build my Business Components package I recive an error stating that the Impl class should be declared abstract.

    When I modify this class to declare it abstract and then try to test (via the AM test function) the VO that I created based on this EO - I receive an oracle.jbo.RowCreateException: JBO-25017.
    Do you think that this has anything to do with modifying the Impl class to make it abstract? I can create another VO against the same table by creating a SQL statement against it and not basing it off of the EO and this VO will run correctly via the AM tester.

  • RE: Consuming and Creating a CMP Entity Bean

    Hi There,
    I have been trying to find an answer for 1 day. I don't know ehre to look next.
    I am creating a CMP entity bean. I have created all the set and get mehtods as abstract functions. I have added a ejbCreate and a matching ejbPostCreate. The class code looks like this.
    public abstract class COrderBean implements EntityBean {
         protected EntityContext entctx;
         //abstract declarations of property accessors
         public abstract int getId();
         public abstract void setId(int intid);
         public abstract String getCustomerID();
         public abstract void setCustomerID(String strcustomerid);
         public abstract Date getDate();
         public abstract void setDate(Date datorder);
         public abstract String getNotes();
         public abstract void setNotes(String strnotes);
         public void ejbActivate() {}
         public void ejbPassivate() {}
         public void ejbRemove() {}
         public void ejbLoad() {}
         public void ejbStore() {}
         public void setEntityContext(EntityContext context)
              entctx = context;
         public void unsetEntityContext()
              entctx = null;
         public COrderPK ejbCreate()
              return null;
         public COrderPK ejbCreate(int new_id, String new_customerid, Date new_order_date, String new_notes) throws CreateException
              setId(new_id);
              setCustomerID(new_customerid);
              setDate(new_order_date);
              setNotes(new_notes);
              return new COrderPK(getId());
         public void ejbPostCreate(int id, String customerid, Date order_date, String notes) {}
    My client code works with both BMP entity beans and session beans. It is shown below. I am working with Sun's Application Server 8.0 and I created the database schema with the capture-schema.exe command.
    Properties prps = new Properties();
              props.put("javax.rmi.CORBA.UtilClass","com.sun.corba.ee.impl.javax.rmi.CORBA.Util");
              props.put("org.omg.CORBA.ORBClass","com.sun.corba.ee.impl.orb.ORBImpl");
              props.put("org.omg.CORBA.ORBSingletonClass","com.sun.corba.ee.impl.orb.ORBSingleton");
              Context context = new InitialContext(props);
              Object obj = context.lookup("corbaname:iiop:localhost:3700#COrderBean");
              //Object obj = context.lookup("entitybean.OrderItem");
                   IOrderHome home = (IOrderHome)PortableRemoteObject.narrow(obj,Class.forName("ctaejb.entitybean.order.IOrderHome"));
                   //use create
                   IOrderRemote remote = home.findByPrimaryKey(new COrderPK(1));
                   System.out.println(remote.getDate().toString());
    I am getting the follwing error. Can someone please help. Thanks in advance.

    hi all, i am new to OAF i have created a login page and trying to validate to a custom table which had two columns username and password, i am calling function from controller class which is in AM and from AM in turn i am calling function in VOimpl.java file where i am executing my query with whereClause, i am passing two parametere username and password to this function.
    if ((uname != null) && (!("".equals(uname.trim()))))
    whereClause.append(" UNAME = :");
    whereClause.append(bindCount++);
    parameters.addElement(uname);
    clauseCount++;
    if ((pass!= null) && (!("".equals(pass.trim()))))
    if (clauseCount > 0)
    whereClause.append(" AND ");
    whereClause.append(" PASSWORD = :");
    whereClause.append(bindCount++);
    parameters.addElement(pass);
    clauseCount++;
    setWhereClause(whereClause.toString());
    if (bindCount > 0)
    Object[] params = new Object[bindCount];
    // the copyInto() is 1.1.8 compliant which is required by ARU
    parameters.copyInto(params);
    setWhereClauseParams(params);
    //System.out.println(getQuery());
    executeQuery();
    //System.out.println(getRowCount())
    when i call this from login page i am getting
    Error - oracle.jbo.RowCreateException: JBO-25017: Error while creating a new entity row for LoginPageEO.
    Can any one help me out.

    If your requirement is not to update any DB Table then don't use an EO. I would suggest the following for your requirement of validating the username and password.
    - Create a VO that has the following query. Do not select any EO during the VO creation.
              SELECT 'x'
              FROM  <CUSTOM TABLE>
              WHERE <USERNAME COL> = :1
                  AND  <PASSWORD COL> = :2
            - Have the initQuery(..) Method in your VOImpl, that takes the username and password. Binds them to the VO and executes the query.
    - Have a method in your AM to take the username and password as parameters. Make a call to the above VO::initQuery(..)
    - In your controller's processFormRequest(..) call this AM Method upon the submit button action.
    This should work smoothly.
    The following is just for triaging the error that you have. The above steps, should help you achieve your requirement by itself, the below steps would not be required.
    Coming back to your issue. Any custom table should have the standard WHO Columns.
    - Modify the custom table to have these who columns.
    - In the EO Wizard, synchronize the EO to reflect the DB Structure.
    - Make sure the EO Attributes are marked updatable.
    Cause of your issue: Through you are not creating EO rows programatically, whenever a VO is based on an EO, upon execution of the VO query, EO's are automatically created, based on the number of rows returned by the VO Query. So internally its failing to created the EO Rows. On of the common reason would be that it creates the EO row, but cannot set the attributes from the VO, because the EO Attribute is readonly.
    Hope this clarifies.
