Crystal Reports Replacement?

Im in the market to find what other companies are replacing
Crystal Reports with. Im interested in some sort of PDF solution -
but I want to know what other companies are using instead of
Crysytal.
Either a WYSIWYG editor for building reports and binding them
to datasources - or
programaticly generate the report - like a html page and
producing PDF or something as an output.
My development environment:
Windows xp - VB.NET - SQL 2000

I'm having issue when I try to load a report from the file system, using RAS SDK.
I'm trying this in Windows Application VS 2008 C#.NET, Windows 7 Enterprise Edition 64- bit envioronment.
string mySampleReportPath = "rassdk://C:
Program Files (x86)
Business Objects
Crystal Reports 11.5
Samples
en
Reports
General Business
World Sales Report.rpt";
object path = (object)mySampleReportPath;
ReportClientDocumentClass bRptClientDoc = new ReportClientDocumentClass();
bRptClientDoc.ReportAppServer = "localhost";
bRptClientDoc.Open(ref path, 1);
I get an exception at the above line
Failed to connect to server \"hd254\".\nError returned from Windows Sockets API : 0.
Source - clientdoc.dl
Please let me know what could be the issue ?
Thanks.

  • Crystal Reports XII and Dynamic Images

    From an ASP.NET 2.0 web page I am executing a Crystal Reports that creates a photo album(actually a student directory) of from several dozen images to about 700.  The images are pkulled from a file system directory.
    The problem I am having is that frequently, not all the images render and I get my default "No Photo" original image I used whe n designing the report.  This is not consistent and there appears to be no pattern to the behaviour.
    example:
    This morning I ran the entire directory exported to pDF of 700 photos and it worked fine.  Turn around, and run for maybe 150 records and it worked fine.  Ran again for 300 images and the first few pages had photos and then there were several pages with missing images.
    This is not a PDF export issue, because it is the same for the ReportViewer control, except tha tthere it will resolve itslef if I page forward and then back to the page again.
    I have adjusted the Crystal ImageCleaner settings, but have not achieved success with anything like acceptable results.
    These are my current settings:
              <add key="CrystalImageCleaner-AutoStart" value="true"/>
              <add key="CrystalImageCleaner-Sleep" value="1800000"/>
              <add key="CrystalImageCleaner-Age" value="0"/>
    The only thing I am really doing with the photo path is replacing part of the beginning of the path with the web server file system directory path in the Crystal Report:
    replace({MedStudentDirectoryList;1.PhotoPath}, {@SidPhotoDirectory}, {@OsacPhotoDirectory});
    This is not a logic issue, because a specific photo may appear in one execution of the report and then not appear in another execution.
    This appears to be a serious bug in Crystal Reports when running from the web.
    It also is driving up the CPU to about 50%.  I understand why this would be resource intensive, but 50% seems high.

    What version of Crystal Reports are you using?
    Have you applied any CR Service Packs?

  • Display User Selection Results on Cover Sheet of the Crystal Report

    How do you display the result of a multi-level dynamic parameter that the user has selected on the cover sheet of the crystal report.
    Or Display the Start & Ending selection results from a dynamic parameter on the cover sheet of the crystal report.

    Replace the code with:
    stringvar selection;
    stringVar array arr1;
    numberVar i;
    redim preserve arr1[count({?ProductID})];
    for i := 1 to count({?ProductID}) step 1 do
    arr1<i> := {?ProductID};
    selection:= 'ProductID is : ' & chr(39) & join(arr1,",") & chr(39);
    This should hopefully fix the error, but I don't think it will solve your problem as it might keep assigning the same product id to each element of the array.
    Have you tried just join({?parameter},', ') as suggested by RG?

  • Is it possible to programmatically replace a Sub Report in a crystal report

    We create crystal reports via the crystal report designer (not in any IDE) , and attach the reports directly to the database via stored procedures. Each report contains a page header and a page footer with patient demographic data. We distribute these reports to our customers and they may edit the templates and alter the page header and page footers specific to their needs.
    We are looking at using sub reports to build a "model" page header and page footer that would be inserted into each template at design time. What we would like to do is allow the customers to create their own sup reports to contain their custom page header / page footer and then programmatically replace the " model" sub reports with the custom sub reports. Please note that these sub reports would not contain any data access and would not be linked to the main report, rather the main report would assign the data that is displayed in the page header/page footer data to shared variables,  and the sub reports would use the shared variables as their data source to display the data.
    Is it possible to programmatically replace 1 sub report with another ? If so are there any code snippets to review -

    Yes it is. Submit your post to which ever SDK you are using into the Developer forums. But search the posts first and look in our samples. This is relatively easy to do.
    Thank you

  • Is there any "Search and Replace" option in Crystal Reports?

    Is there any option to search and replace in Crystal Reports. Since i am using a name in many of the formulas in crystal reports. I need to replace with the desired name on the go.
    Could anyone help me on this....

    Search & Replace across formulas is not available in CR XI but is available in CR 2008.  Here is an excerpt from the CR 2008 Users Guide:
    Searching for formula text
    You can use the Find dialog box to carry out a number of different activities:
    u2022 Search for text or characters in the Field, Function, or Operator trees.
    u2022 Search for text or characters that you want to mark or replace in the
    formula, Custom Function, or SQL Expression that you have open.
    u2022 Search for text or characters across all SQL Expressions in a report.
    u2022 Search for text or characters across all formulas and Custom Functions
    in a report.
    When you search for text across all formulas, the results appear in a pane
    at the bottom of the Formula Workshop. (You can dock the results pane in
    other locations). When you click an item in the results pane, Crystal Reports
    opens the appropriate formula and highlights the matching text.
    Tip: You can open the Formula Workshop to search across all formulas
    from the Field Explorer and from the body of a report. To do this, select a
    formula field, right-click it, and choose the "Find in Formulas" option.

  • Crystal Report using BW Query that contains replacement path (control query

    I have a Crystal report built on a BW query.  The BW query contains a replacement path on a characteristic (as a control query).  The control query has additional variables that the main query is not using.  The crystal report is not recognizing any of the variables that the control query includes.  How do I get the crystal report to recognize the control query variables?

  • WPF Crystal report throws an exception when user tries to replace a file which is open during export of report.

    I am using the latest version of crystal report CRforVS_13_0_10 with Visual Studio 2013.
    I am working a WPF application and using the WPF crystalreportviewer control.
    The steps to reproduce the exception is ,
    1) Create a report.
    2) Export report with sample.xls  as file name
    3) Now open the sample.xls file in Excel
    4) Again export the report with sample.xls  as file name
    5) There is dialog which asks "Do you want to replace existing file sample.xls"
    6)Click "Yes"
    7) Now the exception will be thrown.
    This is System.IO.IOException which is thrown by crystal report  when user tries to save the file which is already opened by user. Also there is no event provided to handle Export_click for WPF CrystalReportViewer where I can handle this.

    I can replicate the issue. Not sure how we can hook into the System.IO process to capture the exception. I have not played with that part yet...
    I created my own export button and wrapped it in a try/catch and this is what I get:
    Which is what you would expect rather than a Null Exception error:
    We'll have to do more testing to see how or if System IO errors can caught outside of CR.

  • Looking for the best web-based replacement tool for Crystal report

    Hello everyone,
    A few days ago, I installed JDeveloper and went through the tutorials posted on oracle.com and have not known all the feature yet.
    In our office we provide end-users with crystal reports against our oracle database, and this fulfills their needs fairly enough but, recently, we received a request from some of remote users to use those crystal reports. So I just wanted to know whether ADF can replace a crystal report if I try to migrate them? A crystal report has rich functions. For example, I use DistinctCount(Param1, Param2) to display the number of distinct param 1s in each param 2.
    Any kind of suggestion would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Crystal Reports 9 and SQL Server 2005 default parameter values

    We're using Crystal Reports 9 and upgraded from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005.
    I'm noticing a very weird problem which I wonder if anyone else has experienced (and hopefully found a resolution for). It appears that in using Crystal with SQL Server 2005 stored procedures, if we have default parameter values in the stored procedures, the default parameter values get completely ignored if you pass in a NULL value from Crystal!
    For example, if you have a stored procedure that begins like this:
    ALTER          Procedure [dbo].[StoredProcedure]
    @Param1 VarChar(200) = '',
    @Param2 VarChar(200) = ''
    AS ...
    both @Param1 and @Param2 have a default value of an empty string, and therefore should become empty strings if nothing (NULL values) gets passed in for them.
    But, like I said, what I'm finding is that with Crystal calling the stored procedure with NULL @Param1 and @Param2 values, they never become empty strings, but rather remain as NULLs.
    This was never a problem with SQL 2000.
    Very perplexing. Anyone else every experience this?
    Thank you.

    Please ignore my earlier post -- answered my own question.
    NULL parameter values do not get replaced by default values in SQL -- that is normal behavior in both SQL 2000 and SQL 2005. Just goes to show, that no many how many years programming experience you have, you can still get tripped up sometimes : (

  • JRC bug: apostrophe in string parameter passed to Crystal Report with Command datasource to SQL Server

    Post Author: nl11087
    CA Forum: JAVA
    A single quote/apostrophe in string parameter passed to a Crystal Report with Command datasource connecting to a SQL Server database, using sqljdbc driver does not escape the special character correctly. When doing a preview in the Crystal Reports IDE it allows you to escape the input parameter as expected and work correctly, but through the JRC component it fails. For string parameters without special sql server characters I experience no problems at all. When replacing the Command with a direct table there is also no problem.
    Reproduction:
    1. create a database db1, create a table table1 with a String type column col1.
    2. Create new report Report1.rpt, create a connection to above, Add Command using 'SELECT col1, col2, col3 FROM table1 WHERE col1 = '{?Par1}' . Add a parameter field Par1 : String
    3. In your java stand alone application using JRC add the parameter Par1 with a value "Jon Doe's Value" containing a single apostrophe. Export to PDF. (I also tried MSWord and this failed too, similar behavior). Additionally, in another test try to replaceAll("'","''") to escape it, preventing the code to break, but now it does not retrieve the expected row anymore and you end up with an empty report.

  • Crystal Reports XI R2 SP 6 - Issue with setting Data Source Location

    Hello,
      After some initial difficulty instally CR XI R2 with SP 6 on a windows XP machine (see thread Error on installation of CR XI R2 SP6), the Crystal Reports environment seemed fine, however, when I tried resetting the datasource location on an ODBC datasource between a development and production server, I get the message 'Some Tables could not be replaced as no match was found....'   The tables in the two databases are identical so that isn't the issue.
    Here is some additional information
    The issue seems related only to DSN's that point to a progress database.  I am able to reset datasource locations for DSN's that use the SQL server driver and also for those that use the XML CR ODBC XML Driver 5.0.  I am not able to reset the datasource locations on the DSN's that use a Progress Open Edge 10.1 DB  driver.
    I can create a new report using the DSN for the Progress Driver and add tables, but the table names are coming up as an alias - i.e. if I add a table called PM_Plant, the table added to the report is PM_Plant1.
    I also found I can go into existing reports, rename the tables in the database expert to be an alias (appending 1 to the end of the table name), then I am able to repoint them using the datasource location screen.
    So it looks like there is a potential work around to the situation, but I didn't run across any information that we should need to do that.
    Any recommendations how to fix the issue?
    Thanks,

    Hi Don,
    The reports were created with CR XI R1 on my PC  initially and the progress drivers have not changed since.   The reports were deployed to a server and I pulled them back to my PC to test out any changes after the CR XI R2 SP 6 upgrade.  (so there is really only one machine involved, the one that had the upgrade).
    I did look at the settings for verifying and tried playing around with those and also with verifying the database but that didn't make any difference.
    I wasn't quite sure which registry keys to look at or what the values should be so wasn't able to pursue that option.
    All the tables in the progress database use underscores as part of the table name (i.e. PM_Plant, PM_Company), do you think the upgrade to SP6 means that the underscore is now a reserved character and that is why the tables are getting aliased?  If so, do you know how to change the alias settings or the list of characters that are reserved?
    Just an FYI, I had to downgrade back to CR XI R1 at this point to get work done.   If time allows, I'll retry the upgrade in about 5-7 weeks.  I discussed the issue with a system admininstrator and we willl try removing the progress drivers and DSN's prior to trying an upgrade again to see if that makes a difference.  I'll also make sure to keep track of all Report Options and Options and also registry keys to see what changes.
    Thanks

  • Access DB (& .ldb file) does not close after crystal reports

    Access DB (& .ldb file) does not close after crystal reports
    Hi! We have a VB application using Crystal Reports 6 that has worked successfully on hundreds of systems for over 10 years. Now, on one network, the application and access database does not close. It seems to hang on the &#91;.Close&#93; command.
    When we open the application an peruse the screens without opening up a report (using crystal reports), the application and access db closes fine. But as soon as we run a report and then close the report and try to close the application, the access db does not close. Many of the screens open the db and grab data from the access db, but it's only after running crystal reports that we have this problem. (Please see more information below.)
    Setup: Application and data (access 97 db) reside on a server in the same folder, but application shortcut is kicked off on client PC. Kicking off the shortcut on the client PC means that the image/process runs on the client PC (not on the server). In this problem case, the application shortcut is on a Windows XP Pro Version 2002 SP2 PC with the app & data on a Windows 2003 server. Users are local Admins on their PCs with "Full Control"over the directory and files on the server where the data (access 97 db) resides. This type of setup is typical and has worked without any problems for clients.
    The application is written in Visual Basic, using Crystal Reports 6 (using DAO). We close the recordset, set it to zero and then it hangs on closing the db (.Close command).
    A few key pieces of information:
    - The application closes fine if the app & data (access 97 db) are on a local PC. This includes closing fine if the application is run directly on the Windows 2003 server where the data is stored.
    - It worked on this client's network until sometime in the last few weeks.
    - One thing that changed is that the company is using VMWare on its servers. Not sure if they started using VMWare at the same time as it started failing. This may be unrelated. Possibly other things changed, but can't get any more information ... yet.
    - It works fine running the application from a Windows Vista PC with a user who is a domain admin.
    - The access db and application hang for about 10-20 minutes and then eventually closes. It appears that somehow
    Crystal Reports is keeping the db open, but I'm not sure why.The application doesn't quit and the database doesn't close even if I try to end the task with the Task Manager.
    - The Crystl32.ocx version being used is 8.0.0.4 (if that matters).
    - I copied 6 month old program files and database files to a test folder on the Windows 2003 server. It fails using these files that worked fine 6 months ago.
    Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated! If you know of another good place to post this, please let me know.
    Thanks!
    - Mark

    Crystal doesn't support tables in HTML interpretation.
    You can probably work your way around this by doing Replace() calls on the relevant tags.

    Microsoft decided to no longer support the 'Simple MAPI' email system in Windows 7. Although countless applications use it to manage emails, including 2ic Pallets, a replacement system has not been provided.
    So Windows 7 users have two options:
    Manually create email messages by copying and pasting information from the '2icEmail.txt' file that is created whenever there is an emailing error, i.e. every time you try emailing with Windows 7.
    Downgrade the '  C:\Windows\System32\Mapi32.dll  ' file to an earlier version, i.e. replace Mapi32.dll with the same file from a Windows Vista or XP computer.
    Downgrading seems to work ok. Mapi32.dll on Windows 7 has version number 1.0.2536.0, which is the same as Mapi32.dll on Windows Vista and XP. However, downgrade AT YOUR OWN RISK and check with your system administrator before making any changes.
    It is strongly recommended to rename the existing Mapi32.dll file rather than delete it so it can be restored if you find other programs do not work after downgrading. To downgrade, follow the steps below:
    Open Windows Explorer, navigate to '  C:\Windows\System32   ' (or '  C:\Windows\SysWOW64  ' for 64 bit operating systems), find Mapi32.dll and rename it to Mapi32.dll.OLD or Mapi32.dll.2ic. If you receive the message "You require permission from TrustedInstaller to make changes to this file." or some other permissions-related error, change the Owner of the file and permissions before trying again, i.e. right-click on Mapi32.dll, select Properties, Security tab, click Advanced, Owner tab, click Edit..., select "Administrators", OK the dialog boxes, again right-click on Mapi32.dll, select Properties, Security tab, click Edit, select "Administrators", allow Full Control and OK the dialog boxes. For more detail, good instructions can be found at http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/w...dinstaller.
    Run the 'Email patch' from the Downloads - Utilities page of this website. This patch installs and registers the files below.
    C:\Windows\System32\Mapi32.dll
    C:\Windows\System32\MSmapi32.ocx
    Note they are only installed when missing or replacing an older version. For 64 bit operating systems these files are updated in the 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64' folder. Alternatively these files can be manually copied from a different computer and registered using Regsvr32.
    The email functionality can be checked using the 'Export/email test spreadsheet', also available on the Downloads - Utilities page. Using this spreadsheet to generate an email on Windows 7 before downgrading should result in an error message. Emailing should work after running the patch.
    RESULT:       I fixed the problem customer PC. TEST and Verification are fonctionnal.

  • After installing SP3 for BO XI R1 - Crystal Reports taking forever to run.

    Hello,
    We are running BO XI R1 SP3.  Ever since installing SP3 a number of our scheduled Crystal Reports are taking forever to run.  The Business Objects server resources are okay, CPU never really gets above 50% so I figure perhaps it's our SQL Server.
    We run SQL 2005 and CPU on that hovers around 30%, we've got 4 2.6GHz CPUs with 16GB of RAM.  Looking in SQL Server activity monitor the reason the reports are taking some time is that the wait types are generally CXPACKET.
    For example a report used to process in a minute however after installing SP3 the report now takes several hours.  Since we've 4 CPU's on our SQL Server activity monitor creates four sessions for the report to try and process it in parallel.  However all of those four sessions have a wait type of CXPACKET.  This I understand is related to parallelism and people have said to reduce that so nothing runs in parallel.
    However I should not have to do that as things used to run just fine, there is no physical reason (i.e. RAM / CPU / HDD) that reports are locked waiting in SQL server.  Has anyone else had this issue or have any suggestions on how to fix please?
    Kind regards,
    Chris Rutherford

    XIR2 has two different redistributable MSI packages.  One is compatable with 1.1 framwork applications and the other is compatable with 2.0 framework applications.
    try downloading the SP3 MSIs from [here|https://smpdl.sap-ag.de/~sapidp/012002523100009656792008E/crxir2sp3_net_si.zip]
    this will have both MSIs
    - CrystalReports11_5_NET.msi          (for 1.1fwk applications)
    - CrystalReports11_5_net_2005.msi   (for 2.0fwk applications)
    rename the CrystalReports11_5_net_2005.msi to CrystalRedist115_x86.msi and replace the existing file in the Bootstrapper folder path
    Uninstall the last install, rebuild and try your Click-Once install again.  This time you should have the 11.5.3700.0 runtime.
