CS-Man: Pac-Man (the game, not the package manager!) clone in Java/SWT

Wasn't sure whether this would go here or Off Topic, but w/e.
I'm working on a Pac-Man clone for my AP Computer Science class, me and a friend. We're using Java and the SWT toolkit to write a suckish Pac-Man clone. We've been working on it for 2-3 weeks now, and have a few more weeks to go. Keep in mind, this is AP Comp Sci -- not very advanced, though are project is a bit above and beyond We're just beginners, although we're both pretty certainly heading into programming as careers.
You can check out the project, code, etc. at http://sourceforge.net/projects/cs-man . Bug reports and feature requests are very much welcome (not so much the latter actually, we have plans for more features than we'll ever get done already), but actual code is not -- it's BSD-licensed, but we need to do the project ourselves
The current code doesn't do much at all, but it's close to working player movement. There are some obvious gaffes, but it's 2am and I just wanted to commit the code and work more tomorrow, so those should be fixed soon. The structure resembles to a large degree the GridWorld case study.
The app works fine on Arch with GTK+ and on Windoze, and should on OS X as well (try SWT 3.5 development). Check out the code, add a user library called SWT with your SWT JAR and possibly source (Arch has these stored in /usr/share/eclipse/plugins/ or something like that), and try.
And yes, the images and such are (obviously) just for testing. They look like crap, and the psychedelic Pac-Man pics we have aren't even transparent.
Anyways, I'm off to bed.

I thought I could have a looksie, since I aspire to be a teaching assistant in an introductory java course this fall. Java is not really my forte, though - i don't know many API's, just enough for the university courses. I've never used SWT.
So, after fiddling a bit to get it working (I put SWT in my classpath, copied the image directory into src/ and started the app from there - could probably have buildt a jar or something too, but there was no makefile), here are some comments:
I'm not saying all suggestions I make are better, I'd just like to know your reasoning. Some of them are just better, though
1. Include a makefile/ant-makefile/cmake-file/scons-file/something. And a readme.
2. GUI::map - why shorts? Why not bytes?
3. Keeping references to all images in all classes makes for a lot of bookkeeping, and horrible constructor argument lists.  I'd create a helper class that serves up images (something like an ImageCollection -  images.getImage(ImageCollection::DOT)). Bonus: Themable application! Just implement a simple config file for the images at loading time
This funcitonality could also be contained in MobMaze, as asking the Maze how it looks seems reasonable enough, and it seems most classes already keep a reference to it.
Now, the next step is to decouple as much image handling as possible from the mObject derived classes. I'd make mObject hold a class variable that refers to the constant (or enum value) of the corresponding image - now MobMaze can use that value, and the mObject classes never have to touch a Image. Of course, the chomping logic for Player (and some state logic for having the trolls turn blue) must be implemented in overridden methods.
4. Using shorts everywhere is not likely to speed up your code on 32 bit machines.
5. In 'special' constructors, like Location::Location(int,int) - don't duplicate functionality from the general main worker constructor (Location::Location(int,int,int)). Call the main constructor with the default argument, instead. Keep the DRY principle in mind
But good work! This is a fair bit more ambitious than I was in my programs for class.
Anyway, I hope I made some sense. I'll see if I feel like having a more in-depth look.

  • Should ODI be installed on a remote box for the remote managed server of Java EE Agents on top of the WebLogic home

    I am configuring ODI 111.1.1.1.7 java ee agents on four managed servers, (two in Linux VM and another two in Windows VM) within one domain (on the Linux VM). I am wondering whether I need to install ODI software on top of the WebLogic that has been installed on the windows vm. The weblogic release is 10.3.6(11g) and the jdk is jdk1.7.0_4 on both VM.
    Without ODI installation on the Windows VM, I have configured a new domain with four managed servers, two on localhost (linux vm) and two on the remote machine (windows vm). After tested two local managed server working, I have tried to use pack/unpack command to transfer the domain managed servers (managed servers contents with -managed=true) to the windows VM, and with relative domain path specified (as WLS home directories are different between linux and windows), and I have got the following error message when unpacking on the Windows VM, therefore, I am wondering whether ODI shall be installed on WIndows VM (still don't think so):
    C:\OraODI\product\odifmw>C:\OraODI\product\odifmw\wlserver_10.3\common\bin\unpack.cmd -domain=user_projects\domains\odi_domain -template=C:\software\odi_domain_template.jar

  • [Solved] Update of one of the packages requires java-runtime-openjdk

    Hi.
    I wanted to perform a system update today but what I encountered is that one of the packages wants specifically a java-runtime-openjdk instead of java-runtime.
    I wonder what package and why. I don't want to install openjdk since I use an Oracle JDK.
    How do I find out what package wants openjdk?
    The list of outdated packages is a bit long.

    It's probably due to it hadn't updated for a while so I found it out only now.
    I've had openjdk before and it probably installed icedtea-web as a dependency.
    Some time ago I forced-removed openjdk and installed Oracle JDK from AUR instead assuming that all the packages that required java-runtime won't get their dependencies twisted.
    I did not know that there is a java-runtime-openjdk dependency as well.
    Now it makes sense.
    Thanks

  • What is the package-visible class?

    I am reading JCVM2.2.1 Spec.
    I don't know what the package-visible class is?
    for example,
    Here is a sentence I could not understand.
    A public class cannot contain a public or protected field of type reference to a package-visible class.
    However, I know a general Access controls such as public, protected and private.
    Help me?
    What is the package-visible class in Java Card?

    There is something called package protected in Java. This means that an object may be accessible thru a package only. Sort of like public with limited visibility.
    Search the Java 2 Tutorial.

  • How to find classes in the package if package path

    in java i want to find classes,Interface,Exception names which are presant
    in the package..
    for example
    java.sql; if i give this it should return
    class name
    Date
    Time
    DrivarManager
    pls helpme in this field

    download the jdk documentation or view it here
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/api/index.html
    The exact problem is i hava set the path to my application that path contains several jar's(contains classes,Interfaces) and classes with package structure,
    now my need is if i run the application ,the application
    should find out the classes and Interfaces for given package structure which are present in classpath...
    for this i have to load all the classes to memory(using classes loader) . then find out the classes which are present in memory...
    or

    it should give me the out put as
    String (or) String.class
    Double
    Cloneable

  • Package Manager OEL5R3 not working like it does in RHEL5R3

    In Red Hat after you register with RHN, the Package Manager (Add/Remove Programs in the menu) will show a list of package groups that can be pulled from the installation media on the Browse tab. I have found this to be very helpful during initial setup of a system and it does not seem to work at all with OEL5R3.
    I have been able to populate the List tab by setting up a yum repository, but was really hoping to see the package groups (which contain many pre-selected packages) in this tool.
    I have done a lot of searching and there seems to be very limited information about this tool. When attempting to view the setup on a RHL box through the GUI the app dumps with a python error. The config files themselves do not appear to be straight up yum config files.
    Anyone have this working? Does it work properly on R1 or R2?
    Thank you...
    -Andy

    Time for me to clarify, again :)
    1) RPM package groups are a supported feature for OEL, including the RPM tools.
    2) The availability of package groups, along with their presentation offering
    on the pirut, system-config-packages, or GNOME menu, depends on whether or
    not a particular repository provides the necessary "comps.xml" definition
    files. Without these files, pirut doesn't know anything about package
    groups.
    3) OEL installation media provides these "comps.xml" files, so RPM package
    groups are available during initial installation.
    4) The ULN Network has the files available for download, depending on the
    channel subscriptions, but does not utilize them for the ability to download
    or update on a package group basis.
    5) Oracle offers a public YUM repository, where package groups may be used.
    More details on this are on the http://public-yum.oracle.com web site,
    including a "public-yum-{el4,el5,ovm2}.repo" definition file that can be
    installed into "/etc/yum.repos.d/" for yum(8) access.
    6) Once you have the public YUM repository setup from #5, you can use pirut,
    system-config-packages, et. al., to install an RPM package group.
    The catch is the packages will be from the original distribution media, so
    after that you must "yum update" or "up2date --update" to get the latest
    versions.
    Hope this clarifies my earlier too-succinct response.

  • Makepkg: How to include source-bundled 'man pages' in the package?

    I'm trying to create a PKGBUILD for my own Python program.
    The source code has been packaged using Python's distutils.  Now, AFAICT distutils do not help you in any intelligent way to include a man page, so I just used a MANIFEST template to add the file to the source package.
    As for the PKGBUILD, I'm currently using an 'install -D -m0644' command (in the 'package' function) to copy the page from a directory under $srcdir to "${pkgdir}/usr/share/man/man1/${pkgname}.1.gz".
    However, seeing that makepkg has some built-in functions for compressing man pages, I figured that maybe it could deal with the proper placement too? My manual approach works nicely, but well, I figure the less of a hack job, the better.
    Thanks in advance - this is my first program and package build so I wanna get it right :)

    Thanks joyfulgirl - I guess I hadn't really thought through what kind of a deal makepkg is.
    At any rate, I figured I wouldn't have been the only Pythonista dealing with this issue and starting reading other people's setup scripts and according to Mutagen's setup.py putting desktop software man pages in 'share/man/man1' under the 'installation prefix' (a local variable, usually '/usr' or '/usr/local') can be considered a POSIX universal. Don''t know if this is reliable or just one hack replacing another, but it would mean being able to let Python's setup script take care of pretty much everything.

    I have a Macbook Pro and have just purchased a GSP hidden objects game. It says on the box that it is compatible and when I try and install it it tells me that installation has been successful. However, it then says that PowerPC games not supported. Help?
    No game icon appears on my desktop and I don't know what I can do.
    Really ****** off as i've not played these games since switching from a windows PC to a Mac and was really excited!! All I want is to be able to play my new game that arrived in the post today. If anyone can help I would be really really grateful....
    The game says that it needs Mac OS X 10.3 or higher to run so I don't understand what the problem is or how I can fix it!!

    beckyj3,
    the last version of Mac OS X which supported running PowerPC apps on Intel Macs was Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). If you’d like to play this PowerPC game on your Intel MacBook Pro, then you’ll need to install Snow Leopard on it and boot into Snow Leopard. (Note that the last MacBook Pro which natively supported Snow Leopard was the Early 2011 model.)
    The game was almost certainly published before Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) was released, so back then, all versions of “Mac OS X 10.3 or higher” would have supported running that PowerPC game.

    I can not start in services by:

    Well, I've tried compiling a package and I have modified the PKGBUILD file to look like this now. (Keeping it as simple as possible)
    pkgname=dvbcut-svn
    pkgver=16
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="DVBCUT-svn is an application that allows you to
    edit MPEG files. ie: Remove TV ads. (SVN version: Fri, 01 Dec 2006)."
    url="http://dvbcut.sourceforge.net"
    depends=('qt' 'libao')
    makedepends=('subversion' 'scons')
    conflicts=('dvbcut' 'ffmpeg')
    provides=('dvbcut')
    source=()
    md5sums=()
    _svntrunk=https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/dvbcut/trunk
    _svnmod=dvbcut
    build() {
    cd $startdir/src
    svn co $_svntrunk --config-dir ./ -r $pkgver $_svnmod
    cd $_svnmod
    msg "SVN checkout done or server timeout"
    msg "Starting make..."
    make || return 1
    # vim:syntax=sh
    I then run makepkg PKGBUILD and let it do its thing
    It ends with this...
    scons: done building targets.

    I'm not sure what's causing this error message.

  • NO Audio output Device is installed as well as NO sound, video, or game tab in the device manager

     Here is the issue I had with with my Compaq F700 series laptop. The sound was working one day and then not working the next. Over the volume icon there was a big red X and the warning that  No Audio output Device is installed. I also found that there no longer was the sound, video, game tab in the device manager. It had gone missing.
    I couldn't use most of the fixes as they require having the sound, video, game tab available and this tab was, as I said missing. I tried reinstalling the sound drivers from the manufacturer’s website as well as using the driver re-install, but at each attempt it would fail as a result of not having any audio devices installed on the computer.
    I tried doing the system restore and rolling it back but the problem didn't get resolved. What eventually worked was restoring the system to a MUCH earlier date, like a month prior to the problem. When the restore finished the sound was still not fixed. HOWEVER, the computer OS (WINDOWS 7) needed to re-install a bunch of updates and after the updates were installed, everything was working. I suspect that the original issue was a bad update (the updates didn't install correctly) and that by rolling the system back to a time prior to the bad updates and then re-installing the update was the fix.
    With that said, if the restore option doesn’t work or can’t be done I would try looking through the add/remove programs in the control panel and uninstall the most recent system updates, then restart computer and let the updates re-install.
    Good Luck

    Only option that I see in the BIOS is under Security.  Audio Device: Hidden or Available. It was set to available and I left it at that. Still no audio.
    Really? Nothing? This computer is one year old. Absolutely no reason for this to be happening. What a joke.
