CS3: Code View hangs badly on complex pages

I have a significant number of web applications that are
written with the Fusebox development methodology, which makes for
at least one page with a sizeable cfswitch tag. In Dreamweaver MX,
these pages would hang if I opened them in design view, but code
view would be perfectly responsive. In CS3, they hang in code view
exactly the same as in design view, and worse so than MX ever was
in design view. A file with a 1308 line CFSWITCH statement froze
CS3 for about 8 minutes and refroze every time I clicked in the
file (half an hour later I finally got the file closed and opened
it up in TextPad to do the 10 second change that I needed to do).
Anyone know if there's a fix for this?

Update - I did find a partial fix... there's a bug in CS3
that's really odd, something to do with when daylight savings time
changes, it was making dreamweaver randomly crash when I clicked on
items (despite that it says it only affects php and asp files, it
was doing it with coldfusion, too). When I followed the
instructions in the fix to get rid of the crashes, it seemed to
improve performance with the other issue as well. Not completely
fix it, but it seemed to hang less often and for a shorter time.
YMMV though.

  • How to change page loading in code view?

We have thousands of pages and whenever we load a page it appears in code view so it is difficult to know which page it is that you need to work on.  Is there a preference setting to allow opening a page in Split view?  It's easier to know we've selected the correct page visually than that with looking at similar code.
    Any tips?
    Rick

I must not have been clear.  Sorry.
My layout:  Design view on top, code view on bottom, file/assets/etc on right.  When I select a file to open, it flashes in split view and then goes to code view.  Our pages look very similar and just code view can't display the page layout and I always (well, used to) work in split view.
How can I set my preferences to say "open file in split view"?
    Thanks for the response, tho!

  • DW Code View font different for one .aspx than all others???

    Mornin' All!
I can't for the life of me figure out why the font in this
one .aspx (welcome.aspx) is different than all other files on this
site. When I go EDIT > PREFERENCES > FONTS here is what is
shown when welcome.aspx is the file currently opened:
    Font Settings: Japanese
Code View: MS Gothic Size: 10pt (small)
I tried changing this from "Japanese" to Western European,
but after I click OK nothing happens, and when I go back in to Font

Welcome2.aspx and all other pages show these settings: (this

What do I need to do to get welcome.aspx to let go of the

  • DW CS3 crashes in code view

Just yesterday, DW CS has started to crash the moment I try
to edit code in several of our critical .asp pages. I can these
pages in design mode (not much help) and can edit other pages in
code mode. But as soon as I click my cursor inside the code view of
    these files, the application crashes.
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

  • When I type a link to a page in my root directory in code view and I click on the link in live view it does not go to that page.  But if I preview in a browser it works fine.

When I type a link to a page in my root directory in code view and I click on the link in live view it does nothing.  When I then go to preview in a browser it works fine.  Can anybody help?

I am not sure however I suspect live view is for viewing the page you are working on. You would have to open the other page to see it in live view. The browser on the other hand is doing what it is designed to do. I jump back and forth all the time from live view to the browsers I have installed.

  • Code view not in synch with Design view (Dreamweaver CS3)

    Hello All,
On my main work PC, I am running Dreamweaver CS3. When I am
working in split view (with both Design and Code view visible) when
I click on an element (say, a button) in Design view, the code view
automatically shows me the code for the element that I am working
on. That way, if I need to manually edit the code, I can click on
the Code view and make the appropriate changes.
On my laptop I am also running Dreamweaver CS3 However, when
I am working in split view and I click on a element in Design view,
my code view does NOT update itself and continues to show the last
bit of code I was working on in Code view. While this could come in
handy at times where i want design view and code view to show me
two different things, I mostly would like code view to update
automatically. Currently the only way I can get code view to update
on my laptop is to hit the "refresh design view (F5)" button. Is
there a way to do this automatically? Is this an option in
Dreamweaver preferences because I don't see it anywhere.
Thanks so much for your help.

  • After applying a template to a page design view is blank - I can only edit in code view.

When I apply a template to a page everything is fine. I can see the page elements in design view and code view. I can edit the page and upload it and all is fine. However, when I save the page with a new name or close the page and then reopen the design view is empty, the code view is normal. I would like to be able to see the page in the design view and cannot. I don't know what to do. I hope someone has an idea for me. Thank you.
I am using DW CS5 and pages are ASP.

When you say "template" are you talking about the .dwt Template file from DW?
If so, you may be using it incorrectly. Once you create the .dwt, all of your new pages need to be created via File > New > Create Page From Template and then saved to your site. If you are using the .dwt file and doing "Save As" to create more pages, you're going to run into all sorts of problems.
Do you have a link we could look at?

  • Add code behind functionality that run when the user view the SP 2013 content pages

I need to add code behind functionality that run when the user view the SP 2013 content pages, What is the best approach to do that?
is it add Delegate Control to master page?
is it add code behind to master page?
is there an event reviver for that?
Your answer will be highly appreciated

    Hi,
According to me, for code behind stuff
Create master page(using module etc..), have the required placeholders in it.
Then, create a page that inherit from this master page, now you can use that placeholder in you page.
Lastly, place web parts in that placeholder. So, code behind will come with that master page .
    Hope it helps.

  • Working in code view selects whole blocks of text when a page is opened for the first time

This is really annoying feature of dreamweaver, I assume it serves a purpose but I do not know what it is. If I open a document (I generally always work in code view) then select the area I wish to, say, copy and then press control and c, the whole block of code becomes selected (so my selection expands). That isn't what I selected so why does it do this? If I click outside the code view - on to css styles for example - then I can now select the lines of code I want and can work with the code as intended. If I save the document, tab to another document in dreamweaver and tab back again, the same happens. So, everytime I open a document I have to click CSS styles before I can work with the document as intended. I've been working with this for a while and it's go to the point where it makes me cry. It's not quite as annoying as working with the old ftp service but it's not far off.
    Help.

  • Type Japanese in code view of DW  CS3

    Hi,
I have a form for submitting answers to questions at my
Japanese website. The form is an .aspx file.
I want to be able to type some Japanese that would show up on
the form. When viewers see the Japanese (it's a question for them
to answer), then they type in Japanese in the form response
    section.
My problem is that I cannot see the form properly in design
view of DW CS4 but I can easily find and change the correct line in
CODE view. But, in code view I can't type in Japanese. I keep
    getting the error mentioned below.
So.....is there some way to be able to type in Japanese in
code view, so that the question I am typing shows up?
The error that shows up is:
The document's current encoding can not correctly save all of
the characters within the document. You may want to change to UTF-8
or an encoding that supports the special characters in this
    document.
How do I change to UTF-8 coding, etc.so I can type in CODE
    view in Japanese????
Thanks in advance for any help offered.

  • DW acting strange - does not go to code view

My Dreamweaver CS3 has started acting strangely since I
upgraded to a new version of CS3 studio.
I have been working with CS3 for a while now without needing
too much of an adjustment from DW8.
However, I just bought a new computer so I had to reinstall
    all my software.
On the new box, DW is acting mighty strange:
    1) When I am in Layout view and click on an element to go to
the corresponding line of code for the element it no longer goes to
the line. However, it does when I r-click on it. It is a bit
annoying since it also opens the contextual menu at the same time.
    2) When I am in code view (which is 99% of the time) and I
click on an element, it no longer shows me the corresponding CSS
rule in the CSS pane. Again, if I r-click sometiomes it works, but
this one is not reliable either way. Sometimes it works if I double
click, but most of the time it doesn't.
    3) The comment icon on the code toolbar is often grayed out.
No reason I can see and just as often it wil work on the same line
of code where it didn't work a minute before.
I combed the preferences line by line without success.
On my old computer I never had any issues like this. I find
it very strange and it is crimping my workflow considerably. Is
anyone familiar with theis behavior or how to fix it?

The times I have seen others post things like this, it's been
    due to a bad
    installation - reinstalling fixes it.

PREFERENCES? No way that I know of.
SNIPPETS? Copy the Configuration/Snippets folder from the
    USER-specific
application folder and paste to a similar location on the new
    computer.
    XP-
    C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application
    Data\Adobe\Dreamweaver
    9\Configuration\Snippets
(these folders are normally hidden - you may have to use
    Explorer > Tools >
    Folder Options to unhide them)
    VISTA-
    E:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver
    9\Configuration\Snippets
    or on Mac -
    Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Dreamweaver
    9/Configuration/Snippets
SITE DEFINITIONS? Export from DW on one computer to portable
    media, and
    Import to the other.

  • What is it about this markup that breaks DW CS3 Design View Editing?

    Folks:
I'm attaching very simple --and apparently completely valid-- markup that generates the text shown between the markers below:
    ------------start----------------
yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda badda.
    ------------end----------------
As you can see by examining the file, it contains only an span enclosing text and spaces, and some following breaks.  This file passes DW validation: no errors or warnings.
If I open this file in DW CS3 Design View, select and delete the last word, "badda", the entire text --every "yadda"--  is also deleted.  All that text is really gone -- if I immediately save the file and re-open it, there is no text content at all, just the span pair,  spaces, and the trailing breaks.  This is completely repeatable.
When you edit this file, do you get the same result?
The attached file is a cut-down, simplified version of a production file that exhibits this issue. (That file also passes validation.)   When I delete single  words,  entire content paragraphs disappear.   So this is not just a point of curiosity.  I need to figure out how to fix the production code and avoid this problem in the future.
What is it about the attached markup that causes this issue?  I've fooled around with this code quite a bit and the best I can figure out is that DW is confused when both the start- and end- span tags are followed immediately by a line break.  Inserting a space in either place makes the issue go away.   But the production code doesn't have any occurances of this pattern. And, anyway, line-breaks have no significance to html, just for source-code formatting, right?
Am I missing something incredibly obvious?
    TIA
    hen3ry

    Nancy O:
Thank you for your response, which gave me  valuable clues to understanding the issues.   (Specifically, it led me to re-read and understand better the nitty-gritty of the HTML4 specs,  section 7, "The global structure of an HTML Document", especially 7.5.1 The BODY element.)
I believe you are saying --in sum--  that to be reliably edited in DW, each source file must comprise a syntactically correct and complete HTML Document.
I am attaching a second file, "badcode2.html", modified substantially as you suggest.  It passes the DW validator, the validator.w3.org test, and the www.totalvalidator.com test.    No errors or warnings.
I do this:   Launch DW, open this file, choose Design View if necessary, select the final word of text, "badda", and activate Edit-->Cut (or Delete).   As before, all the other text is deleted as well. This is repeatable.
It seems to me this sample code satisfies your general principle.  Could I be misapplying the three validation tests?  Or that passing these tests does not assure the document  is syntactically correct and complete?   Can you recommend other tests?
I'd like to add the following two points as a matter of background and a bit of niggling:
--I'm aware  that complete HTML pages must contain <html> , <head>,  and <body> tags, although the HTML4 specification seems to say <body> tags are optional.   All my production pages, as served, contain these tags.   My underlying design is a php template with individual content files incorporated by inclusion.   There may be only one set of <html> , <head>,  and <body> in  a  page. The  "outer" template code provides these tags, and individual content files cannot contain a nested set -- so they must be "bare" markup.   Is DW able to support this design, in which "bare markup" files are seemingly unavoidable?    Is there a mechanism analogous to DW Design-Time Style Sheets to provide virtual existence of these tags so "bare markup" files can be successfully edited?  I've looked for such a mechanism but not found one.    Or some completely different method?
--You specify the inclusion of <p> or <h1> tags within the  body.    Is there some special significance of <p> or <h1>  with respect to stable editing in DW?  My reading of the HTML4 spec indicates that a single block element is the minimal requirement for body content. Either of these tags qualify, right?   But so does <div>, and that's what I use in my current example.    Am I misunderstanding something?
Bottom line,  I'm looking for a pragmatic solution for my problem:   Once in a while, among hundreds of  structurally similar "bare markup" pages I edit in DW without any problem,  I lose data.   If inserting an additional tag into all my content include files eliminates these occasional problems, I'm  willing to do that, as long as:  (1) There is an arguable technical basis for the addition,  (2) the added tag does not  produce anything visible on the served page, and (3) the validators don't flag the extra tag.
    Suggestions, please!
    Thanks,
    hen3ry

  • Pasting smart quotes and apostrophes in code view.

Sine upgrading to Dreamweaver CS5, I haven't been able to copy/paste smart quotes and apostrophes into code view without them automatically being converted to straight quotes.
For example, the following sentence (notice the curly quotes):
John’s new song is called “DW Blues”
would get pasted into Code View as:
John's new song is called "DW Blues"
Notice the smart quotes and apostrophe are replaced with single and double ticks, or "straight quotes."  While this seems like a minor detail, it's extremely important to our writers and editors to have them appear on the website exactly as typed.
If I do the same copy/paste in Design View (doc type is XHTML Transitional), it appears as:
    John's new song is called &quot;DW Blues&quot;
The characters are still replaced, and the straight quotes are then entity encoded (as expected).
This doesn't happen with other valid UTF-8 characters like ™, ®, —, etc., or with any other code editors I've used, including DW CS3.
Is there a hidden preference somewhere to disable this "feature," or is it just a bug?
    Please help!

It's now 4 years since jsparacio posted this, and I just wanted to let everyone know that I had -- and am still having -- the exact same problem with Dreamweaver CS5 (running first under Windows XP, then Windows 7, and now again with Windows 8.1). So it's not just Macs that are affected.
FWIW, I have set my DW CS5 Paste preferences to the 3rd of 4 options available
        1 - Text Only
        2 - Text With Structure
3 - Text With Structure Plus Basic Formatting
4 - Text With Structure Plus Full Formatting
in the EDIT > PREFERENCES > Copy/Paste Preferences dialog box.
But the Paste Special command ignores this setting, giving me only the first 2 options from which to choose, with option 2 the default selection for Paste Special operations (options 3 and 4 are grayed out, and can't be selected).
According to David Sawyer McFarland's _Dreamweaver CS5: The Missing Manual_ (O'Reilly Media, 2010), the reason these are grayed out is because I am pasting unformatted ASCII text which I generated in a program editor called "UltraEdit":
"... Choose EDIT > PASTE SPECIAL to open the Paste Special window. Here, you can choose which of the four techniques you wish to use ... sort of. You're limited to what Dreamweaver can paste. For non-Microsoft Office products, you can use only the first two options--the others are grayed out--whereas you can choose from any of the four with text copied from Word or Excel." (McFarland, p. 81)
Regardless of such restrictions, standard copy-and-paste (CTRL+C followed by CTRL+V) works just fine for me using Dreamweaver CS4 (i.e., I have never needed to use the Paste Special command), but with DW CS5, neither Paste command (CONTROL+V or CTRL+SHIFT+V) works properly with typographic/curly/smart quotes.
All typographic quotes -- ASCII-0146 and ASCII-0147 (double quote marks); plus ASCII-0145 and ASCII-0146 (single quote marks, for quotes within a quote) -- are converted to inch (&quot; is entered in the code) and foot (' is entered in the code) marks when I copy-and-paste text with these characters into Dreamweaver's Design View.
When I copy this same plain ASCII text directly into the code (rather than using Design View), typographic double open & close quotes are converted to the inch (") mark, and typographic single open & close quotes are converted to the foot (') mark.
The beginning of this week, I installed Dreamweaver CS5, ver. 11.0, Build 4909 under Windows 8.1 OS on my new Ultrabook. I was hoping that under Windows 8.1, DW CS5's handling of typographic quotes might improve so that I can actually use this program that I purchased 4 years ago. Alas, no such luck: I continue to have the same problem I had when I first upgraded to Dreamweaver CS5 back in August 2010 (then running under Windows XP on my desktop computer).
Back in August 2020, when I first asked about fixes, I was told to change the Title/Encoding setting of Page Properties to "Western European" -- which I tried, but it didn't work then, and it doesn't work now ... and even if it did, it wouldn't be a proper fix for the problem as I have plenty of good reasons for wanting my HTML page Title/Encoding set to Unicode (UTF-8), not Western European ("charset=iso-8859-1").
The ability to copy-and-paste typographic quotes is such a big deal for me that I chose back in August 2010 to revert to Dreamweaver CS4, which I've been using ever since.
It is *very* frustrating that, 4 years later, I still can't use this program, and shall be reverting to DW CS4, yet again.
I continue to be completely flummoxed by this. Every other program with which I am familiar converts non-typographic quotes to typographic/curly/smart quotes ... never have I seen the process automated in reverse!

  • Getting rid of Multiple Spaces in Code View (after Copying/Pasting)

    Hello,
I'm trying to find a way to get rid of multiple spaces between words in Dreamweaver CS3's code view.
Oftentimes, when I copy/paste text from elsewhere (e-mail, website, etc), the Dreamweaver code shows up with multiple spaces. Normally, that wouldn't be problem -- except that my blog's auto-tag plug-in doesn't detect selected phrases when there are multiple spaces between words, e.g., it'll detect "Swiss Alps" in a post but not "Swiss  Alps" (notice the extra space between words in the second phrase).
If at all possible, I'd like to be able to keep Dreamweaver's text formatting option when I copy and paste, as that means I don't need to manually put words in bold/italics.So, is there a way to keep that option while getting rid of all the extra spacing between words?
By the way, I'm familiar with Wordpress CSS, but not with Dreamweaver CSS. Not sure if there's any difference.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

I make it a point to never paste formatted text into HTML pages.  Formatted text from MS Office usually contains a variety of junk you don't want and I don't have that much faith in MS Word code removal tools.
Bold and Italics from Word or Outlook should be changed to current HTML tags of <strong> for bold and <em> or emphasis for italics anyway.  Also see Logical Tags here:

Find and replace is good for removing whitespace if you know how to do it correctly. Make backup copies just in case things go wrong.  http://www.tjkdesign.com/articles/whitespace.asp
