CS4: Applying settings to unopened image files

Is it possible to apply settings to image files without first opening all the image files?

You do know that you can open multiple raw images in Camera Raw, select All and Synchronize them, don't you?
In Bridge you can also select multiple files, then Edit > Develop Settings > Paste Settings.
Please continue this thread in the ACR and/or Bridge forum.

  • Apply rotation info to image file

    Hi,
my Canon camera saves the orientation of the pictures taken, and PSE 5 is perfectly able to read this info and show the pictures correctly. The Windows xp Explorer obviously is not able to read this information, so the pictures taken in portrait are displayed with the incorrect orientation.
What I would like to do now is very simple: apply the info which way to rotate a given picture to the image file and save it this way.
The software that came with the camera is able to do that, and I cannot believe PSE is not. So I am afraid I just did not find the right option or command.
    Any suggestions are highly welcome.
    Thomas

You are right in your general analysis. The mechanism the camera uses of marking the image as "rotated" is not respected by all software. PSE Organizer handles it entirely correctly.
There is no automatic way to make the program apply an actual rotate to images with the rotate marker. You can do it very easily "by hand": just select all the relevant pictures and do a rotate right [CTRL/right-arrow] and then a rotate left [CTRL/left-arrow]. This will not harm/degrade the images in any way.
Of course, the other option is to turn off the facility in the camera.

  • Catalog and Keyword Non-Image files

In addition to my images, I have a growing collection of background and reference information relating to the subject or location of the images.
I would like Lightroom to be able to Catalog and apply keywords to non-image files.
I use a metadata search to find my images; I want to be able to use the same tool (Lightroom) and the same metadata (keywords) to find other related information.
If Lightroom could Catalog and Keyword all Adobe format files (PDF, InDesign, etc.) this would be a great start.
The next step; selectable list of file-types; export keywords to .xmp

    Joe,
Being a digital archivist dealing primarily with pages digitized from the turn of the 20th Century for a religious sect I am highly involved in the usage of keywords.  Each page of a work, be it either a volume of a newspaper or a book, contains keywords.  I do not use side-car files but instead incorporate my keywords directly into the resultant TIF file.
So I used your posting to see what the answer was.  To that end I am presently working on a 1922 title, Thirty-One Years of Organized Work in Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Louisiana by Church of the Brethren from 1891 to 1922, that will consist of slightly over 500 pages.  To test your question I placed the title of the work as a keyword.  I then used Bridge's find ability.  It did not work.
I forgot that Bridge converts all commas into semi-colons.  And changing the colons into semi-colons still returned no results.  An examination of the keywords tab showed the string broken down in to sections.  Searching for the longest string showed the problem.  Returning to my keyowrd string I removed all instances of the semi-colons and re-searched.  This resulted in a properyl found file.
So.  The longest string I have tested to date is 120 characters, the title of the work minus the commas.  I suspect that Curt is correct in his assumption that it is limited by the operation system.  I tested this theory by incorporating a double string (without the commas) of my book's title.  This was 241 characters including the space between the duplicated title.  The search was successful.  A triple set of the title returned no hits.

  • FAQ: When I apply edits to an image using Revel, does it save a new file or just the edits?

    Q. When I apply edits to an image using Revel, does it save a new file or just the edits?
    A. Revel cloud keeps a copy of your full resolution originals. Edits in  revel are non-destructive, so your original is always preserved (unedited). When you export photo (MAC) Save to Camera Roll (iOS), that's when Revel applies your edits. On iOS the preview is used. on MAC the full resolution of the original is used to generate the new edited photo.

    Thanks kumars ,
I have a specific drag and drop area on our website. This works fine for all earlier releases of Firefox after these security settings
"(1) Enter "about:config" in the URL field; (2) Right click and select New->Boolean; (3) Enter "signed.applets.codebase_principal_support" (without the quotes) as a new preference name; (4) Click OK and try loading the file again."
Bust these settings not work for me in Firefox 17.
Yes the drag and drop functionality is java script based and i am not using any script blocker addons.

  • Disc image file exported from Encore CS4 won't work

    Hello,
I have a problem concerning the export of a disc image file in Encore CS4. I recently upgraded to CS4 and wanted to continue my project which I started editing with CS3. While working with CS3 I already did image files from this project for burning and testing the DVD. Back then it worked with no problems.
However, since using the CS4 version Encore does the image without any problem, but I can't use the image file in any way afterwards. I mounted it with Daemon Tools as I did before, but the DVD won't play in any software DVD player I have installed (Media Player Classic, Windows Media Player, Nero Showtime) nor can I access the file structure over a file manager. Nevertheless NeroInfoTool and ImgBurn say there is a DVD in the virtual drive. Then I exported the DVD project into a folder and now I can see the files in the file manger but again no player will play it.
Has anyone experienced this before and is able to help? It would be very appreciated since I don't want to downgrade back to CS3 :-)
It's Encore CS4, Version 4.0.1.048 on a 2,8 GHz HT CPU, 2 GB RAM, Nvidia Geforce 6800 UT, lots of HDD space, XP + SP3.
    Thank you,
    Chris...

    Hey,
thank you both. As I said no player accepts the project exported to a folder. It doesn't matter if I point the player to the video_ts.ifo or just the folder - it won't play. As a consequence I re-installed Encore CS3 in which exporting worked fine and guess what - the exported image and folder output doesn't work either. Since it worked before in CS3 it comes down to the conclusion that either I did some editing to the project that screwed the project or Encore CS4 did. Checking for mistakes in the project and previewing in inside CS4 everything seems fine. So might it be CS4 that ****** up the project file??? I mean it's full of strange bugs so it could easily be that. I even updated my Daemon Tools yesterday and it won't make a difference.
Or could it be something else I haven't considered yet? Any ideas? I just don't want to build the whole project again which might not even work if it's some other error. This is a desperate call for help
    Thanks,
    Chris...

  • Image file type and settings

hi i have a hard time determining which image file type works best in capt 3.
jpg's for example get really bad,
Which photoshop export settings (png 8/ 24 , dither no dither etc etc) work best and have a nice file size / image quality balance?
Can anyone help me out, much obliged and loads of karma points to you!

    Hi there
I too use PNG images. Note that you have control over the quality settings for images.

  • Apply settings to images upon import

I am using LR 5.  Is there a way to apply settings to images upon import?  For example, I want to set noise reduction to X if an imported image has a ISO setting between 1000 to 1250, from camera A with lens B.  Right now I am applying the changes manually by using the metadata filter, but it will be great if the same settings can be applied upon import (to save time)

To set detail settings based on ISO, it's best to use a plugin (in my opinion), otherwise you have to mastermind which ISO's your camera is capable of having, and save a default for each, then if you want to change you have to go through the process again.
Some cameras can have dozens of different auto-ISO values, and it's best if you don't skip any of them.. granted it's not so bad if you never shoot auto-ISO .
    Consider:
    * ISO Detailer (author: me), or
    * Bulk Develop (author: Jeffrey Friedl)
instead - both plugins are essentially free.

  • How to correct "No timestamps were found on any of the image files" in Bridge CS4?

I am trying to process a "Auto-stack Panorama/HDR" images and I keep getting the error message "No timestamps were found on any of the image files".  I don't understand what this means and how to correct the issue so I can process my images.  All of the images are .CR2 raw files, which Bridge shouldn't have issues with.
Can anyone help with correcting the issue of the timestamps?
    Thank you.

  • Unable to view two different image files at once in PS CS4

For some reason I am unable to open two separate image files and view them both on my screen in Photoshop CS 4.  My goal is to combine two versions of the same raw file in order to expand the tonal range.  I want to stack the 2 images and then use a layer mask to blend the best parts of both versions.  The problem is that when I open the second version, the first isn't visible until I close the top image.  I want to view both images on the screen and stack them but can't do that because I only see one.  Can some kind soul tell me what I'm doing wrong here?

Thanks for responding.  This works really well.  I did learn that if I go to Window>Arrange>Float All in Windows (thanks to another email from the forum) that I can view both images at the same time.  I sure appreciate your help.  You have no idea how I've agonized over this darn thing.  Thanks again, Gladys
Please view this as an Option to perform your task. There are smarter ways to do this but this is what I do...
*) I pull up the image file (say pic_01) and adjust the levels in the area of the photo I want.
*) I then open from the RAW doc and it is now sitting as a Tiff in Photoshop.
*) I rename that file (such as pic_01Top) and SAVE. (But keep it open)
*) I go back and reopen pic_01 in RAW and adjust the other properties I want.
*) Open that image from RAW.
    *) Perform a ctrl c to copy.
    *) Close pic_01
*) Do a cntrl v to copy that over pic_01Top
*) Go to Layers-Layer mask-Hide all. (This also give you your "free" layer mask)
*) Go to my brush tool.
*) Use the black over white box arrow to reveal or conceal your bush strokes.
*) Flatten file when done and Save anyway you wish.
    Hope this helps.

  • Image file access dates changing in mass (Windows).

In review of the access date properties for image files within a directory being accessed by Bridge within the Favorites area, they are all changing to the current time and date, even if the image is not viewed within Bridge.  Why are the access dates of image files being changed even though they are not viewed?  This makes it hard to determine whether an image can be archived or deleted based on last access if Bridge is always changing the access date every day.  Thanks for any insight you can give on this!

Is there a way to turn off the caching of thumbs or metadata or whatever is causing the Access date to change when searching or reviewing images within a directory using Bridge?
As said, no experience with network environment. But Bridge is a browser and when you want to view things it needs to cache the file and data first.
Having said that, in normal usage (stand alone) it stores and saves this data in the cache folder and once it has done so it will not need to recache until you have made changes to the file. Check Bridge prefs / Cache/ Location  to see where the data is stored when you are using this machine.
By default on a stand alone Mac (windows seems to have a similar cache file) it should be in the User Library/ caches/ Adobe/ Bridge CSxx and inhere is a plug in and a folder called Cache, containing several folders.
For Bridge CC there are 4 folders, 256 (the cache files of the thumbs) 1024 (containing HQ preview cache files) data (what it says) and full (containing the 100% previews in cache)
All files that have been fully cached (pointing to a folder the content window should show already good thumbs and the activity bar bottom left in Bridge window should not show any activity, only the number of items showing and items hidden) don't need to recache for that machine again unless you changed something to the file or added metadata.
So once cached there should be no reason for Bridge to 'access' the file again unless access means looking for the file to check if the saved data still applies to the corresponding file on your machine, but then al files should show about the same access time because this is a very fast process on a fast machine.
You can't deselect cache because as said Bridge is a browser showing the content of your files, and to show this it has to generate a thumb and if needed a preview. But as also said, once cached it normally should not start recaching until changes are applied.
You have several ways to set the quality of the cache:
There are two checker board icons top right that give you the option to set for cache. By default it is set to 'Always HQ' to have both good thumbs and a good preview when pointing to a file.
Then you also have to option to generate 100 % previews which provides you with almost instant 100 % previews for loupe in preview panel or full screen view and click. Logically this needs more time and generates a lot of big cache files, all depending on the files you start with and the size of your monitor.
Finally you have the option to use embedded previews only. This is a very quick method but provides low quality thumbs (black border around it) and when clicking on a thumb it first needs to generate a HQ preview that then will take time.
In Bridge prefs advanced there is the option to create also monitor sized previews which should provide you with good quality full screen when using space bar in Bridge to preview in full screen.
This setting also creates a bit larger cache files in the 1024 folder depending on the size of your monitor (logical).
And if you want to apply a search using the find command you also have to include non indexed files to search in all folders, including the not before cached files.
Like first time cache this first indexing takes some extra time but should only need to be done once and then be persistent until you add new files or folders that have not been cached or indexed before.
Until so far the theory for a stand alone. If you have the files stored in a Network and other stations have access and have different cache settings or monitor size settings there might be some other things going on, or someone else has changed the file on their station and then when you select that folder Bridge needs to recache the changes.
Hopefully this makes some sense for you?

  • Where is the image file size???

Where is the image file size in LR3? I can't see it anywhere neither in the Library module, nor in the Develop module.

As far as I know Lightroom does not display the file size. Keep in mind that LR never makes changes to the Original files that you import.
When you export a file with LR edits the file size generated will depend on the edits applied and the size and quality settings you choose in the export dialog.

  • FW CS4 need help with gradients & png files

Relatively new to FW CS4.  I have a png file for use in a PV7 css based site.  Read the docs and still can't figure this out.  The png file is a base image with 3 color sections.  I need to change these three original individual sections to a new color scheme...I can use a regular fill...but I would like to keep the slight fading effect of the original pngs.  In addition...the png's are obviously in png format..but if I export as jpg will I loose the gradient fill/opacity effect in a jpg file ?
Original png...want to change to light blue tones: Note the fading to the right side of the outside columns.
If not...how do I change the color scheme in each section of the original png ?  Or do I export as is and modify the resulting jpg's ?
If I use a gradient fill or paint bucket...the effect just overlays the original gold type color...giving me a new color all together with the original background still partially showing through underneath the new color change ?
If I delete the gold tones in the png image...then I can't fill the empty space with any other color...nothing works.  I've also tried color find/replace
but with no results or changes.
Second problem is when I do apply gradient fills to this png...or jpg...the fill seems to me to be from top to bottom of the section ?  I need the fill to move from left to right as above ?  Any ideas here also ??
I posted on the PV7 FW group but it's not that active and was more confused by the answers ?
    Thanks much...I'm stuck for now.
    Tim

After following Lorains' gradient link, when you have the first box tweaked to your liking and you need it replicated to the remaining two boxes (without having to go through the process again)
    1. Select the box that has the new Gradient, then Edit > Copy (or Ctrl/Command + C)
Then select the remaining two boxes that need the new gradient style, then Edit > Paste Attributes
This process with carry over (copy/paste attributes) the first box to the others.
    Or
    2. Select the box that has the new Gradient changes, then in the Property Inspector (PI), to the far right, tick the small icon under to create a New (Object) Style. Once created, open the Window > Styles Panel. Select the two remaining boxes on the canvas then click the New Style icon in the Styles Panel to apply.
    1. is memory resident/temporary and will be lost when you later utilize the Copy command. But 2 has more 'staying' power and you can reuse it, go back to it, save it to disk, and tweak it further to create new ones at any time.
If you absolutely have to keep the final result as a .jpg, then turn off the Canvas color. Open the Window > Optimize Panel, set the output to jpg, BUT set the MATTE color to the color that matches the background of your page.
Otherwise, output to .png8/png32 with Transparency .

  • CS4 suddenly won't recognize Nikon files

Is it really true Adobe is not going to offer the plugin necessary to make my less than a year old copy of CS4 compatible with my new Nikon D7000? Does anyone have the 6.3 plugin, or know where I can get it so I can try to hack it into my CS4? There is no way I will every buy another Adobe product if they are basically making my $300 program garbage in less than a year, so I would really like to know a way around this. The dng conversion is inadequate since I shoot thousands of photos. Thanks!

Ed, I doubt very much that the authors of a professional image processing package would even begin to consider leaving anything up to chance.
You do know that they provide the free DNG converter, so that anyone with a new camera CAN convert the very latest camera files to a format all the older Photoshops understand, right?  It's not like they're leaving people out in the cold.
People often seem to think it's okay to pay thousands for a new camera, but their old software should just be updated by the manufacturer for free...  And in this case it actually is, when you consider the DNG converter.  If you think about it, it's a brilliant strategy by Adobe.
But if you want the ultimate convenience of full integration and not having to do an extra step of conversion, well, then the old saying applies:  "If you want to play you have to pay".  Buy the Photoshop upgrade.
    -Noel
Sure they leave a ton of things up to chance. If they didn't they would actually come out with a version that didn't need updating 1, 2, 3 time over the course of it's life (wouldn't that be nice).
The DNG convert only works IF ACR and the convert has been updated to accept the new RAW file. That is why everytime a new ACR is released a new convert is released. If you have a old version of the convert try using it on newer camera files, it doesn't work. So everyone is still left out in the cold until Adobe gets around to updating ACR and converter.
No I'm not looking for any free upgrades to PS. I don't want Adobe to include whatever new features they may have in a newer version of PS and ACR ported back to the older version. But to UPDATE ACR to see newer cameras, say for at least one version, IE CS3's ACR never gets updates after CS5 comes out but they update CS4 ACR until CS6 comes out. You still don't get the newest feature set in the newer version. You just get newer camera models.
I play and I pay. I have had PS 6 CS2/3/4 and now 5. I could of just upgraded Lightroom and stayed with CS3 or 4 but I don't paticularly care for Lightroom and I rarely used the 2 versions I've had. Just like you don't use Bridge.
Oh and that other problem I was having with CS5 closing with a RUNTIME ERROR when you and I first butted heads. Funny but on the exact same hardware and the exact same OS, XP, on the exact same install of the OS. After a complete uninstall of PS and good cleaning of the registry and a reinstall I don't get those errors. So to me it was PS that was causing it.
Something in the lines of the *x*x*x MVM*x*x.xxx files being created on some random drive by PS and representatives of Adobe stating the it wasn't PS creating those files. It was some 3rd party plugin. When in fact it was PS that created them. I get them in the ROOT of my D drive. My D drive is where I have PS installed but is not used for image files or the PS scratch disk or system Temp.
