CS4 - Relink causes protective shutdown

Hi,
I use the following code to relink items in CS4:
bool16 Relink(IDFile file) {
    IDataBase* db = ::GetDataBase(this);
    if(!db) {
        return false;
#if kMajorVersionNumber == 6
     PMString formatName;
     ErrorCode err = kFailure;
     URI linkURI;
     InterfacePtr<ILinkManager> iLinkManager(db, db->GetRootUID(), UseDefaultIID());
     InterfacePtr<ILink> iLink(db, GetLinkUID(), UseDefaultIID()); //GetLinkUID is a function defined elsewhere
     UIDRef iLinkUIDRef = UIDRef(db, GetLinkUID());
     URI fileURI;
     Utils<IURIUtils>()->IDFileToURI(file, fileURI);
     UID newLinkUID;
     Utils<Facade::ILinkFacade>()->RelinkLink(iLinkUIDRef,fileURI,kSuppressUI,newLinkUID);
#else
     //CS3 code
#endif
    return true;
In most cases the code works perfectly, however once I encountered a crash on Mac, resulting in the following partial stack trace:
Thread 0 Crashed:

How can i modify my code in the Relink function so that this cannot occur?
Why do the ProcessCommand cause a Protective Shutdown?
I really hope somebody can clarify this problem.
Thanks
Kind regards Toke

Yes, you should check the global error code after any operation which may fail.
Typically you find out about these when they fail and you protective shutdown from not checking.
However, any time you call an InDesign API, it *could* call a command, so you really ought to check all the time, but there's lots of simple routines which you shouldn't have to check.  Basically anything that returns an error code shouldn't set the global error code.
Note the key use of "shouldn't" there.

  • InDesign CC - protective shutdown when updating InCopy changes

    I cannot update changes in an InDesign file that our copy editor passed back to me after making his changes in InCopy. As soon as I attempt to "update all" or selectively make one of the changes the application crashes with a "serious error" and the logs show it is a "protective shutdown."
    I am working on a MacBook Pro 8,2 with 12 MB of RAM. The suspect file is on a server in our company network. It was created from a previously created version of the same newsletter - that previous issue was made from an .indt file originally created in CS4, but updated to CC. This is the first time I've worked on this newsletter and used InDesign CC with InCopy CC in the workflow. Previous work using the template in CC has been trouble free (sans InCopy CC).
    The copy editor is working remotely outside the network in another state, but he does other work every day using InCopy from that remote location. He has just reported that he was able to open the file on the server in InCopy and checked in everything without incident.
    Some key lines in the crash log are:

    I can post the entire log report if needed.

    What version of InCopy and InDesign are you using? Are they both the same version? Also, this sounds a bit like a server-related issue. How is your network speed? There's a lot of moving parts here so we need to try to isolate the issue. Can you provide some more details regarding your setup and if this problem started occurring all of a sudden or if you've been experiencing this issue from day 1.

  • FCP Processor Use Causing Overheat & Shutdown

    I posted earlier in the MBP forum but now that I've narrowed down my problem I need to ask a more FCP-specific question.
    I've never had this problem before until I recently installed FCP and tried rendering a large amount of standard definition DV video. Basically, within just a few minutes of rendering, the processor overheats and the computer instantly and completely shuts down.
    Once I figured out heat was causing the problem, I tried manually running the fans at full speed. This barely helps. The temperature quickly climbs on the MBP from the 40's (celsius) to the 90's. (which is when I cancel the render and it returns to normal). Not sure how hot it was getting when it was causing the shutdowns.
    I checked the activity monitor. When open, FCP uses about 11-12% CPU, but when rendering this jumps to 184% CPU. - pretty obviously the cause of the overheating.
    I'm well past my warranty period, is there anything I can do software-wise to fix this overheating problem? (Like set a limit to the % of CPU FCP can use to render?)
    Any answers are very much appreciated.
    And again, despite 1.5 years using this MBP, only FCP does this and only while rendering - so I'm not to keen on a potentially expensive hardware servicing... it seems to be more of a software issue.
    Thanks,
    -Stephen

    I've never heard of an app that would cap the usage of a CPU... but if it were me, and I really needed it to do as advertised, I'd give a call to Apple...
    The only other thought I have on this is dust... i.e. I wonder if you're getting enough pass through of the heat because there's too much dust or you're not letting the back side of the laptop enough clearance so the heat can escape.

  • Photoshop cs4 photomerge causes application crash

    When I try to use the photomerge tool from photoshop cs4, under file->automate->photomerge, before the box appears which allows you to select the photos to use, an alert box appears saying that photoshop has stopped working, and then the application force closes.
    I tried uninstalling, and then using the CC cleaner tool, then reinstalling, but I still have the same problem.
    I installed it on a windows 8.1 x86-64 machine with 16GB ram.  Both the 32 bit and 64 bit photoshop applications have the same failure.
    Has anyone else experienced this issue?  I haven't been able to find anyone else who has this issue.

    I can't find the new thread, and I assume there is no solution yet, so I'm replying here...
    I can say that I have an Alienware 18 with switchable graphics - low power, built-in Intel HD-4600, or twin nVidia 770M cards - and when running in the Intel graphics mode, photomerge works every time, but recently (AFAIK) when running the nVidia graphics mode (in single mode at least - I will try dual/SLI later), I can say photomerge crashes every time.
    I'm fairly sure my PC used to to do photomerge running in nVidia mode, so it maybe the latest, or recent driver, causing the problem; I'm running drivers contained in "340.52-notebook-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe" on windows 8.1 64-bit.
    My suggestion therefore is to try older drivers with nVidia cards, at least to get some data about what works/doesn't work and report it to nVidia. Even though the root cause could be in Abode software (nVidia may have tightened up on some issue that conceivably manifests an Abode bug), I'd bet money Abode no longer care about supporting you if, like me, you are running old CS4, paid for at great cost - they will likely just say buy an upgrade to the latest s/w (which may or may not work)!
    Cheers

  • IdeaCenter - USB thumb drives cause crash/shutdown

    Firstly ,  I have this desktop
    IdeaCentre B540 - 25681JU
    Every now and then when I insert a thumb drive in to the USB the fan will kick in on full force for about 2 seconds and then the computer will shut down. Ever since I bought the machine new.
    It's not limited to a single thumb drive, it has occurred with both a Kingston and Patriot brand.
    When ever I have lined the drive up and inserted it quickly and as straight as possible nothing has happened; it generally seems to occur when I am more casual about inserting it with less concentration.
    It has probably happened about 10-12 times in 6 months- which doesn't sounds like a lot, but its not right all the same and it would be more if I were more lax about it.
    Any ideas? Or others with the same problem?
    Damien

    hi damien5000,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums
    Can you try to:
    1. Boot the PC into the BIOS by continuously tapping F1 on startup
    2. When you're in, try to insert the flashdrive
    If the unit shuts down while inserting it in carefully, there's a big possibility that something is shorted inside (probably the I/O board) that's causing the PC to shut down and you need to contact lenovo for service.
    If the unit doesn't shutdown, try to boot into safe mode and try to insert and access the flashdrive. If everything's ok, perform a clean boot, restart the computer in normal mode and observe the PC.
    Let me know your findings
    Cheers

  • EAP service causes slow shutdown

    Hi
    I've got a problem with my desktop PC Win7 pro. serv. pack 1.
    All of the sudden I have a very slow shutdown (2-3 min) - for no apparent reason.
    I've pinned the problem down to the service EAP (extensible authentication protocol) when this service is stopped Win7 shuts down normally (5 sec).
    But I need EAP for internet - currently EAP is set to manual...
    Clear pagefile at shutdown is disabled and waittokill is set to the min. value of 2000
    Any suggestions?
    I've got a etl shutdown trace file for Win performance analyzer, can anybody help me interpret it?
    By the way I've got all of my drivers updated..!

    I solved the problem on my own - a bit embarrassing perhaps, but here goes.
    I found out that "IsDegradation "true" means that some Windows built-in application or service has caused this slowdown. For example
    sidebar.exe (Desktop Gadgets) or ssdpsrv (SSDP Discovery). If it reads "false", the problem lies elsewhere." (thanks https://www.winhelp.us/troubleshoot-performance-in-windows-vista-and-7.html)
    When I connect direct lan (cable in PC) shutdown was normal, so it had to do with the wireless network connection,  I had another look at adapter settings and I always had two connections there with a red cross (active but not connected) those where:
    Intel(R) 82579V Gigabit Network Connection and Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter #2 - I deactivated those two (right click and deactivate) and problem was solved, PC shutdown is back to 8 sec. (wireless setting on Atheros must have been changed somehow
    conflicting with other inactive connections?) but inactive conn. most probably should have been deactivated long time ago #)
    So - Controlpanel - Network and sharing center - Change adapter settings - Deactivate all other connections than Qualcomm Atheros AR9287.

  • NF750-G55 BIOS Memory Options causing spontaneous shutdowns

    I was playing a bit with BIOS and I found these options under memory settings that are not mentioned in the manual:
    Power Down Enable
    MemClk Tristate C3/Altvid
    Thinking to save power and/or lower heat output of my memory modules, I enabled all of them.  It did not seem to give any observable benefits, but I left them enabled anyway.
    About 30 minutes later playing Assassin's Creed, suddenly my PC turned off by itself.  Just like, boom, off, just like when you unplug the power cord.  I pressed the power button, and it turn on and boot up normally.  Windows did say that it was not shut down properly, but it booted up to desktop just fine.  I was thinking maybe my graphic card or PSU is going to die.  So I left the computer to idle about 20 minutes (i went to the kitchen), and when I came back, the PC was off.  So this happened on idle as well.
    Then I remembered that I changed the BIOS memory settings.  So I disabled all the settings that I mentioned above (back to prior settings), and my PC has been on (playing games and idle) like... 3 hours now no shutting down by itself yet.
    Should I worry about components failing or these BIOS settings are just some of the things that I should stay away from?
    Its not impossible that it is the culprit as new things break too, but my PSU is pretty new (like 1-2 months old).
    Thanks in advance

    1st, I do not joke about serious matter, why would I joke about your statement?
    I was not making joke of anyone's statement.

    If you joke about seeking help you are in the wrong forum
    I did not joke about seeking help, I joke because it is seem to be so hard to understand about that particular BIOS setting, you know, to clear the atmosphere.  Oh, C'mooon...
    Quote
    2nd, The shutdown can't be caused by a BIOS setting like that.
    It will shutdown a lot more without that setting, I'm sure, maybe not right away but it will.
    If you read my original post you will understand that my PC is working well (aka no spontaneous shutdown) before I change this setting.  Clearly the spontaneous shutdown only happened while the setting was enabled.  I have disabled the setting ever since, and up to this moment, absolutely no spontaneous shutdown, just like before.  It is pretty clear that the BIOS setting caused this.
    Quote
    3th, Why would a memory setting do an Emergency Shutdown? If you are so funny, answer that!
    There is no EMERGENCY to POWER-OFF over your STUPID setting, now is there?
    This is exactly my question!  Now why I fool around in this forum if I have the answer?
    Quote
    Your silly switch isn't, so why would it do that? Unless it didn't power-off at all.
    This is not my silly switch.  If I remember correctly it was made by Micro Star International, the board manufacturer.

  • PostgreSQL causing slow shutdown

    When running Mavericks Server on my Retina MacBook Pro, shutdown times increase dramatically (from a few seconds to several minutes). During a verbose shutdown, I get the following log messages:
    com.apple.launchd                      System: Still alive with 1/7 (normal/anonymous) children.
    *.anonymous.pg_receivexlog             PID is still valid
    *.anonymous.postgres_real              PID is still valid
    *.anonymous.postgres_real              PID is still valid
    *.anonymous.Python                     PID is still valid
    *.anonymous.pg_receivexlog             PID is still valid
    *.anonymous.postgres_real              PID is still valid
    com.apple.DeviceManagement.postgres    PID is still valid
    Even if no services are enabled, PostgreSQL still runs and causes the slow shutdown. If I uninstall Server.app and remove the Server directory, it shuts down normally. As soon as I install Server.app, then shut down, even if I never activate any services, the shutdown time is back to several minutes.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    You solved the problem yourself! Don't use the server software on the a portable device. As it happens, I was also doing this, so thanks for the help!
    I feel like it's for this exact reason that the Server isn't free - by only allowing those who need it - and are willing to put up a few bucks to purchase it, they have a lot fewer complaints. For example, I imagine that this server was also the reason that my MBP took a minute or two to go to sleep.
    The reason *I* was using it, was because I wanted the fancy usage graphs that displayed my CPU, memory and network usage over time. But it's not worth the hassle. I'll find something else, or write a python script to create a CSV before I sacrifice the extra overhead this places on the system.
    Whatever you're doing, you'll probably be able to find something else that does it even better and with a lot better control than you get with this beast.

  • 560Ti OC 2GB drivers causing PC shutdown

    Ever since I updated my nVidia driver to 301.42, my computer has been randomly shutting down as if the power cord has been removed. There are no errors in event log, no BSOD, and the PC doesn't restart. I have rolled back to 275.33, but the problem still occurred. I then tried 285.62 (the MSI download page version) and 296.10 but still the problem occurred. The PC case is clean, I have reseated the CPU, I have run Memtest86, I have used OCCT to perform PSU testing, I have unplugged HDDs. I have repeatedly removed the video card drivers completely and reinstalled. The computer will sometimes run ok for anywhere between 10 mins and an hour and then shutdown when I am in a game such as WoW or Team Fortress 2 (even with the video settings set to low), and will then not be able to boot past the Windows loading screen without shutting off again. No errors have been brought up in any tests. All temperatures are optimal on the PSU/GPU/MB. The PC runs fine in safe mode and with the Windows standard VGA driver. I have performed full antivirus scans and Spybot scans and there has been no result. I have uninstalled the 3D vision and HD audio components of the nVidia drivers and still the problem occurs. I uninstalled Firefox and Adobe Flash player (after I turned off hardware acceleration - which made no difference).
    Nothing on the computer is different apart from the nVidia driver update, and rolling back drivers should have fixed whatever problem was being caused.
    I don't know what else I can do to test for the error. I have also submitted to nVidia in the hope of a resolution though am doubtful they will give me anything worthwhile. Please advise.

  • PS CS4 64 causes BSOD on Win7 64

    I am having a problem with 64 bit CS4 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit - when I open a bunch of RAW files in ACR from Bridge (but ACR opens in PS not Bridge), at the time after doing all the adjustments I hit Open to move from ACR to PS, whole computer stops and after ~30 secs - reboots.
    When it stops, I am seeing strange dots located randomly all around the screen - it seems to me that problem is graphics card related (9600GT with passive cooling, latest NVidia drivers) but tested it thoroughly and it worked fine. Turned OpenGL off in PS config, PS version is 11.0.1.
    Maybe someone has an advice where to look for potential solutions ? Looking through Adobe KB found some registry entries that permanently turn OpenGL off and am currently trying it. Problem does not happen every time, but if it does, it's always the very same moment moving from ACR to PS.
    Appreciate any help...
    Regards,
    KZ

    After a day of testing here is what I have - unlikely to be graphics card as bunch of GPUTool stability tests for ~15 minutes (that got the GPU temperature up to ~80 deg C) with no errors, also unlikely to be a mainboard temp sensor - CPU stays cool for most of the time and I run number of tests to make it hotter (with no errors either). It seems to be that another  OpenGL (and probably in conjuntion with graphics driver) issue - since I turned OpenGL permanently off using registry key found here http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4056 did not had a crash although opening RAWs from a Bridge/PS for a whole day - hope it stays like that...
    Thanks a lot everyone for help...

  • Exception caused by 'shutdown immediate'

    Hi,
    I am using a PL/SQL to delete or update tables.
    When Oracle is issued with 'Shutdown immediate' or 'Shutdown abort' or if Oracle is abruptly shutdown, I have to rollback the transactions. Although, I have not written a rollback command, Oracle automatically rolls back. This is the desired behaviour. This happens as desired in my machine. In Production environment, I believe the shutdown has thrown an exception. The logic I had entered in the exception block where we update an error table is visible in the Production environment. I could not recreate this exception in my system. I am not sure what exception Oracle throws on abrupt shutdown. So, I plan to write an exception block as a precaution. Do you please know what exceptions are possible ones if there is a abrupt shutdown.
    Regards,
    Raj

    > Do you please know what exceptions are possible ones if there is a abrupt shutdown.
    There is no exception thrown.
    SHUTDOWN ABORT is like disconnecting the power cord & no subsequent action occurs.

  • CS4 Installation Causing Extreme Slowdowns

    I recently installed CS4 on my computer (HP xw4300 workstation).  In the process I somehow lost my user profile and am experiencing extreme slowdowns when trying to open any of the CS4 programs.  I actually talked to HP customer service and they said there is no reason (memory capability, etc...) as to why this should be happening.  Any suggestions?

    Hi Ellie,
    To fix your problem, I would suggest adding memory to your system.  Your processor seems to be O.K. (but nothing more), so investing a tiny $25 into memory would be a good solution possibly.
    Add another GB of RAM or so.  If that is too expensive, get this RAM.
    If you are not experienced in computer maintenance, make sure you follow the simple steps of installing more memory.  It really isn't that hard.  And unless you go rubbing your feet around on the carpet and come back to shock your computer, you're not going to wreck it.  Just remember to ground yourself once in a while on the power supply (the box inside the computer case).
    I don't know how much you know, so here's some simple steps:
    Turn your computer off
    Unplug it (fat black cord)
    Wait about 30 seconds (the motherboard holds power for a little while)
    Open the case (the 'box' that makes the noise when it's on)
    Ground yourself to the power supply by touching the metal housing (again, this is the *usually silver box inside the case - around where you pulled the cable from the back)
    Find the slots for the memory (make sure there is no dust in the slots!)
    Open the clasps and put the sticks in evenly with equal amount of pressure on both sides until they snap in
    Close the case
    Plug it in
    Turn it on
    Once the PC is on and you're logged on, press the windows key (on the bottom - between the 'Ctrl' and 'Alt' keys) and the 'Pause/Break' button at the same time.  This will bring up your system properties.  Depending on how much RAM you bought, it should show something like 1.5GB or 2.5GB or a large number of MB's (2444MB for example).  If it still shows 512MB, you either didn't install the chips correctly or the system isn't recognizing them.
    Hope this helps.

  • Firefox causing slow shutdown on my Macbook Pro.

    I am using a Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) running on MacOS 10.8.2
    Normally my shutdown takes about 3 seconds but recently realized that the shutdown takes about 20 seconds. When I uninstalled Firefox, everything returns to normal.

    Before you shut down the computer, you should exit any applications that are running. Forcing Firefox to shut down by shutting down the operating system is not advisable.

  • Migration to CS4 has caused problems with production

    Hi guys
    We have been developing a production in Flash CS3 for the
    past month. We were experiencing problems with memory leaks in
    Flash Player 9 and it was recommended that we upgrade to Flash CS4
    and Flash Player 10 so we could use the new unloadAndStop() method
    to unload assets from the production.
    On upgrading to FP10 we were able to solve our memory leak
    issue. But on doing so, the upgrade introduced a new problem into
    our production. Some of the methods that worked in FP9, now do not
    work in FP10. Nothing in the code of the methods has changed.
    Is anyone aware of any bugs in FP10 or any differences in the
    coding that is needed to do tasks like reference the stage, create
    event listeners, etc?
    Cheers
    Jay

    Hi, i have tried that and whilst it works for some folders it doesnt work for all, but more frustratingly than that, it has stopped reading quickly, it now takes anywhere up to 5 minutes to scan the dri've whereas before it was taking 5-0 seconds. Also everytime i exit out of one folder and then want to go back into it it again takes ages to search.. almost like it isnt storing info from the previous search anywhere... any ideas why this change will have come baout.. it cant be a coincidence.. it just never is.
    thanks for replyin so quickly btw

    No probs. Have you tried it on other computers? If other computers work fine, then it probably spells that the player is fine, but possibly the computer is lagging due to the running of too many applications or there are viruses, adware or spyware in your computer that is slowing it down.
