[CS5][JS] Efficiently export 100+ page book as PDF?

Hello,
I'm creating an InDesign Book via javascript, and this book will contain more than 100 single page InDesign Documents. My script to create the book works fine - but takes anywhere from 5-8 minutes to run.
However, when I run my script to open that book and export as a PDF, it takes 10+ minutes just to export the PDF, and then it times out on our InDesign Development server. I'm wondering if I can more efficiently write my script to create the book, as well as my script to export the book as a PDF. Both scripts are very simple:
CreateInDesignBook();
function CreateInDesignBook(){
    var myBook = app.books.add('c:/myBook.indb');
    myBook.bookContents.add('file_1.indd');
    myBook.bookContents.add('file_2.indd');
    // and so on, with potentially 100-200 more .indd files added
    myBook.close(SaveOptions.YES);
ExportInDesignBook();
function ExportInDesignBook(){
    var myBook = app.open('c:/myBook.indb');
    var myFile = new File('myPDF.pdf');
    myBook.exportFile(ExportFormat.pdfType, myFile, false, app.pdfExportPresets.item('[Smallest File Size]'));
    myBook.close(SaveOptions.NO);
Thanks in advance for any help/advice!

As for creating my book, I have found that if I create the single Indesign pages (each contain a page-size PDF) in increments of 50 pages per document (so could have 3 documents of 50 pages each getting added to my book), the books are created MUCH faster (less than a minute). However, exporting that book as a PDF still took roughly 11 minutes.
Does anyone know if there is a faster way to export this? I'm just trying to avoid time-outs on the server. Is there a way I could add pages/documents to an existing PDF (instead of exporting the entire book/document as one PDF)? If that were the case I could just add 50 pages at a time to the PDF and maybe not even need the book anymore?
Ultimately, I just need an efficient way to get all pages into a single PDF.
Thanks in advance for any help!

    i cannot export my saved book to pdf or jpeg or blurb. Nothing works. If i start a new book , then it works but i would have to redo the entire layout.
    Anyone have the same problem or/and anyone could help?
    Thank you

    Yes i do use LR4.3 .Idid upgrade to L4 from L3 , only because the book feature,to switch from blurb to PDF. I do use mostly my own images or combination of photo montage, but sometimes color backgrounds or lightroom graphics.
    I just reinstalled all my backgrounds and it seems like to work now.No explaination of what went wron (or what is wrong) as i am used to lightroom .May the fact that i am tweeking the layout (using the print layout) or the padding feature quite a bit but that's what the software is supposed to do.

  • Is there a way to export individual page items as PDF or EPS?

    I have a long document, all threaded, with a bunch of inline graphics. Many of the inline graphics have callouts and pointer lines. I take the graphics, callouts, and pointers, group them, and then cut and paste the group inline into the text flow. I want to be able to tag the graphic (complete with pointers and callouts) for an XML export. But I cannot tag a grouped object. I remember learning at the PeP conference in May that one way was to build the graphic with callouts in AI, and then place it into ID. But I already have an established workflow, with hundred of grouped inline objects in my ID docs.
    So I was wondering if there is a script that will allow me to export individual page page items as PDF or EPS. I know that you can export page items as JPEG, but I don't want rasterized text. Please assist. Thanks.

  • Can I select layers when exporting an Indesign book to PDF ?

    Hello,
    I've created a book consisting of separate Indesign files, each containing different languages. Each language is in a separate layer.
    I then created 4 different book which each contain about 5 files. This makes that I have 4 books with all languages spread over different layers. When I export the book to PDF I would like to be able to select the language layer so I can create a PDF file per language. I can open each file to hide all language layers except the one I want to export, but that is a time consuming work.
    I am wandering if there is a quicker way to export to PDF each language without having to open and resave each separate Indesign file.
    Thanks for all the feedback.
    Tom

    Why do you need to omit the French layer for a German book?
    Just export with all the layers.
    Then, in Acrobat, turn off the French (Italian, Spanish, English?) and leave German exposed.
    Save as "Meine tollen deutschen Buchmarkt.pdf".
    Then, turn off all the layers except Frenh, and save it as "Mon excellent livre français.pdf"
    I promise you that no one outside of a very few people will ever know that there are layers with other languages hidden. Hardly anyone who uses Acrobat knows there are layers at all. (Except the brilliant people on this forum)

  • Exporting from Pages Mavericks to pdf not working

    I want to export my Pages Mavericks document to a pdf. It's not working. Everytime I do it, a box comes that says, it's not possible. What is going wrong? Why can't I export to pdf?

    Either some of them have the same name or they are to big in Mb for your Pages to convert. It doesn't matter where they come from, they are all in the saved document. Downsize them before you add them to the Pages document.

  • I can't export anymore pages file to pdf

    When I try to export pages file in pdf format (ever done without problems till few hours ago!) there is an alert advising me that files name having more than 31 characters can't be saved in the destination volume. But although I cut the lenght of the file name, the alert still be. I'm blocked with any possibility to transform pages file in pdf and I need it. I also reset the mac , but nothing happened. PLEASE HELP ME !!!

    Hi,
    I'm using version 4.1.  As far as Pages is concerned, nothing else has happened.  Everything was working normally.  However, I had to uninstall Norton recently because the online Back-up that came bundled with my renewal was creating crazy log files that took up my entire hard drive (over 900 GB).  I don't see how that would be related to my problems with Pages.  Any insight would be really appreciated.  Thanks!

  • How do I export one page to a PDF from a multipage spreadsheet?

    I have a multi page spreadsheet ported over from an Excel workbook.  I use this for billing and just add a page at the end for a new invoice.  I need to make a PDF of the current invoice to send to my customer.  I've tried all permutations of the export command and the result is the same all 24 pages or sheets are converted and I have to open the PDF with another piece of software to delete the unwanted pages.  Any ideas on how to simplify this process?

    In the print dialog select the "From ... To..." option
    Then select the PDF button at the bottom left corner to export a pdf directly to email

  • Possible to export a page as sRGB PDF?

    We have a client submitting PDF files to us for conversion to an image-based online (Web) reader. Our software is designed to convert only from PDF. This one client's magazine has sometimes shown poor quality after conversion, and we're not sure why. Hundreds of other magazines and only this one has trouble. We think it's their InDesign settings, but their graphic designer is relatively new. Our production manager did some research (none of us is InDesign-saavy) and decided the PDFs need to be in sRGB color instead of CMYK. Our manager used Acrobat Pro to convert some of their pages and then got better results after running them through our software. But he doesn't want to manually convert all of their PDFs with Acrobat and then have to charge the client for custom work. Problem is, when we open our only copy of InDesign, it appears the only way to get sRGB output is to output the pages as JPG files. Tips?

    When you export set the Output panel to something like this. Set compatibility to 1.3 if you need a flattened PDF.

  • Pdf export in pages (email as pdf) do not keep font style !!!

    I wrote a simple page in Pages with tables and i used Times News Roman police and also used a Bold style for some sentence.
    I was really surprised that the pdf export completely replace font police a no more visible difference between normal and bold style !
    please help ! this is really not usable.
    Thanks

    I just made a very simple one page Pages document (blank) with Times New Roman with both regular and bold text. I emailed the Pages document as a PDF to myself. The Pages document (PDF) displayed the text as both regular and bold Times New.
    Did you view the Pages pdf on the ipad or your decktop computer? Try making another Pages document and see if your still having this problem.

  • Could somebody tell me how to keep my fonts when sharing/sending/exporting a Pages doc to PDF?, it changes it every time

    I need to share PDF versions of my documents, but after use different options the result is the same, the fonts are changed and the documents look different. Does anyone knows how to avoid this?, I recently switch from a Macbook Intel late 2008 and I used to work by Printing to PDF without any trouble, however, that option on my new Mac Air does not work anymore.

    I was ASSUMING that it is 2gb because it always synced just fine with my 2gb shuffle.
    That doesn't appear to be the case now.  You can view the size of your Music library by browsing to the Music section of your iTunes library and looking at the number provided towards the bottom bar of the iTunes window. '
    And if I went to add more music folders to my library, when it would try to sync, it would tell me that my shuffle was at capacity.  So I was removing albums from my library so that it would sync.
    Again, as I stated above, you don't need to do this.  You could have just configured your iPod to sync a subset of your iTunes music library.
    Did you see the article I referenced above?

  • Can't export Pages document to PDF

    I have been trying to export a Pages document to PDF a number of times and get the following message: "The application Pages quit unexpectedly." I have rebooted and still can't export. Can anyone help, please? Thanks so much.

    paramita,
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
    That particular issue usually indicates either a bad font or a corrupt image. Or both. Try validating your fonts using Font Book. If you've got a corrupt font, change fonts in your document. If Font Book tells you all your fonts are healthy, try pulling half of the images out of your document, then saving again as a PDF. If it works, you know you've got a corrupt image in the half you pulled out.

  • Pages 5.2 PDF Exporting Issues

    Ever since I upgraded to OS X and Pages 5.2, the system will no longer allow me to export a Pages doc to PDF into certain folders. I keep getting a message that says "The document "xyz name of doc" could not be exported as "xyz name of doc". I have tried changing the name of the document but that doesn't help. The only thing I have found that works is if I change the destination folder...and them after exporting it to PDF I am able to move it into the folder I originally wanted to put it in. I have tried cleaning up the original destination folder and removing old docs thinking it is a spacing limitation but that didn't help. Any one else having this issue or have any suggestions on how to fix this?
    There is also now a limit to the # of characters that I can save the document as in certain folders. But again this only applies to certain folders so this sounds like something I should be able to change the parameters but I cannot find where to do that. Any suggestions?

    Actually I can still save it as PDF, without converting to Pages '09. It just won't let me save it in the folder I want to save it in...which is a subfolder. But if I save it in the main "Documents" folder, that works just fine. Then it will allow me to move it to the folder I originally wanted it in the first place.
    The issue is this wastes time AND I've been getting error messages stating the filename cannot be longer than 31 characters even when it is not at or over 31 characters. So this leads me to believe that there is a problem w/ the updated version of Pages NOT my computer.

  • Export multi page pdf to excel (searching did not answer my problem)

    I searched the forum and found a few related posts but none have seemed to work for me. I do not use Acrobat much so am not all that familiar with it. I am using Acrobat Professional 8.
    I have a multi page pdf that I want to export to excel. When I choose 'edit > select all' everything highlights. I then right click on the highlighted portion and ask it to 'open table in spread sheet'. It does so but only exports one page of the pdf.
    I have set 'view >page display > single page continuous' but still have had no luck. If someone would help I would greatly appreciate it. Please be specific with menu commands as I may not know where to find something if you just give me the last command.

    Hi,
    Welcome to Adobe Forums.
    You can print a multiple pages of a single PDF file on one page.
    File - Print - Under page size and handling, click on Multiple and then select pages per sheet accordingly.
    You can print through Adobe PDF Printer which will save a new PDF file with multiple pages on single page.
    Once you have this PDF file, then you can export it to TIFF for your application.
    Let me know if this is what you were looking for.

  • HT4168 I have created an 100 page booklet in Pages, with many photographs, can I export it to ePub, and make an electronic book, because it says that "Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template"?

    I have created an 100 page booklet in Pages, with many photographs, and much written word, can I export it to ePub, and make an electronic book, because it says that "Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template"?....
    Basically what I want to do is publish the document into both an eDocument, and a hard copy document. What is the best way to do this?

    No Peter, this statement came right off the Apple ePub statement when outlining how to use ePub. the full context is:

    ePub is an open ebook standard produced by the International Digital Publishing Forum. Pages ’09 lets you export your documents in ePub format for reading with iBooks on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
    iBooks supports both ePub and PDF file formats, and you can export both from Pages.
    When to use ePub or PDF
    Use ePub when text is the most important part of your document, for example when you create a book, a report, a paper, a thesis, or classroom reading material.

    Creating an ePub Document to Read in iBooks
    You can export any Pages word processing document to the ePub file format for reading in an ePub reader, such as the iBooks application on the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Documents created in page layout templates can’t be exported to the ePub format.
    Documents exported to ePub format will look different than their Pages counterparts. If you want to get the best document fidelity between the Pages and ePub formats, style your Pages document with paragraph styles and other formatting attributes allowed in an ePub file. A sample document is provided on the Apple Support site that features styles and guidelines to help you create a Pages document that’s optimized for export to the ePub file format, which you can use as a template or a guide. To learn more about using paragraph styles in Pages, see the topics under the heading “Working with Styles” in the Pages built-in help.
    To read your ePub document in iBooks on your mobile device, you must transfer the ePub file that you create onto your device.
    To use the “ePub Best Practices” sample documentTo learn more about using the ePub format and get a better feel for how a Pages document might appear as a book in iBooks, it’s a good idea to download the “ePub Best Practices” sample document. After reading the guidelines and instructions within the document, you can use it as a template to create your own document. You can also import the styles from the sample document into a new document you create.
    Download the “ePub Best Practices” sample document at the following web address:
    http://images.apple.com/support/pages/docs/ePub_Best_Practices_EN.zip
    Do either of the following:Use the sample document as a template.Import the paragraph styles from the sample document into a new or existing Pages document.
    Export the document you create to ePub format to see how it looks in iBooks.
    Preparing an existing Pages document for export to ePub format
    Documents exported to the ePub format automatically appear with page breaks before every chapter. A table of contents is automatically generated, which allows readers to jump quickly to any chapter title, heading, or subheading in the book. In order to create a meaningful table of contents, it’s important to apply appropriate styles within your document. The ePub reader uses the paragraph styles to determine which items should appear in the table of contents for your book.
    Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template.
