CS5: Times (T1) being substituted for no apparent reason
This is happening with maddening frequency:
I have an InDesign CS5 document open. I select several items, some of them being text boxes. I copy the items, then tab over to another open document. I paste the items.
For no apparent reason, some of the fonts in the pasted items will spontaneously change to Times (T1), and be highlighted in pink, signifying that I do not have that font installed.
The default font is set as Minion Regular. I have Minion Regular installed on my Mac, naturally. I do not have Times (T1) and I don't think I ever did. I think it has something to do with paragraph styles, but the default Basic Paragraph font is Minion Regular. If it subs anything (and why should it be??) I would think it would default to Minion, not some font I don't even have installed.
Why is InDesign changing my fonts? Is this a bug that has been fixed in CS5.5?
Thanks in advance.
The reason Peter would ask that what you are reporting sounds exactly like a situation where your source document from which you are copying has a different Basic Paragraph style from the document into which you are pasting. So, if you only looked at the Basic Paragraph style in your source doc, it wouldn't tell you anything. I'm perfectly willing to assume that you checked both source and target style definitions, I guess.
However, there are a few other ways to generate similar results - e.g. let's say you have frames defined in your source doc with the Basic Text Frame Object Style - note that this is an object style, not a text style. However, it's possible to specify a paragraph style in an object style, and maybe the Basic Text Frame in your target doc specifies a paragraph style with Times? Something similar can be done with Table Styles and Cell Styles, are there any tables in what you are copying and pasting?
These are, obviously, just guesses. Other guesses (without any evidence to support 'em) might be document corruption (export INX or IDML, re-open and re-save) or remotely possible preferences corruption or application corruption (reset preferences, or reinstall app).
Lastly, if you can (you may be working on something sensitive, or covered with Do Not Distribute flags), you may just want to post a link from which the forum regulars can download your misbehaving InDesign files. Sometimes, what takes dozens of careful messages to uncover can be found in thirty seconds of clicking.

Hi folks! My MacBook Air is making awkward little chipping sound... For no apparent reason. My Macbook Pro does the same. Goes like "chip... chip... chip", always three times in a row, for no apparent reason. Does anyone know how this occurs?
It seems to be linked to the sound being on. When I mute the thing, it doesn't do it. When I plug headphones into it, it does it over the headphones.

Time Machine Backup cancels for no "apparent" reason
Hello,
I am using Time machine with Snow Leopard and an external WD My Book 1TB HD - I am using the very latest WD firmware/software (made for Snow Leopard) and was making successful automatic backups for several days until recently when the backup started canceling for no apparent reason. I installed the Time Machine buddy widget and found this message:
Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/GPL III BACKUP/Backups.backupdb
No pre-backup thinning needed: 1.80 GB requested (including padding), 894.51 GB available
Error: Flushing index to disk returned an error: 0
Copied 7393 files (997.6 MB) from volume GPL III HD.
Backup canceled.
I tried a manual backup and the same message. I waited until the next automatic backups and got the same message - each and every time.
I have searched the Time Machine section and nothing specifically addresses the error message.
Any ideas on what is wrong and how to resolve it? I thought about erasing the HD and starting over but that seems draconian.
Thanks!GPL3 wrote:
I checked the set-up and it looks fine except the Tips note that a GUID partition is preferred for some purposes (whatever that means) on Intel Macs (such as mine) rather than the Apple Partition Map which is what the WD HD has - although it does note that either will work. Could this be the problem?
No, I guess I need to try to reword that somehow. Was trying to keep it short. It only matters, under some circumstances, on a drive with OSX installed on it.

mdworker is used by the mds process (MetaData server); Spotlight is it's main client, but Time Machine also uses it, as do some anti-virus apps. Hard to tell just what sort of problem that was.

These are all mds having problems in the Spotlight index on your TM drive.
Could my anti-virus SW be an issue (I am using VirusBarrier X6)?
Quite possibly. Exclude your TM disk from it, or turn it off.
Also exclude your TM disk from Spotlight indexing, at least temporarily, via SYstem Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.
That will likely fix the backup problem.
You really don't need much, if any, anti-virus on a Mac; and many anti-virus products are actually worse than a virus! For more detail, see this post by Klaus1: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10942146 or: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2307964

For no apparent reason I got a response back from the iTunes Store saying " this card can not be used for the iTunes Store"
I have been using the same card for over a year no problem. Checked with my back looks good on their end.
Has anyone ran into this before? Thanks for the the information Tyler. I'm still in awe, I heard that if an LCD is over heating or the phone is over heating, there would be a warning message telling me that the device is over heating, not sure how true is this?
Nah I never dropped it yet, its too fresh and precious to me but the funny thing is no matter what care I took since the three weeks that I've had it, it still developed this problem. -
Time Machine duplicating backups for no apparent reason
Hello all. I am attempting to use Time Machine with a hard drive ("AirDisk") attached to an Airport Extreme Base Station. I am aware that this is not officially supported, and I expect I will just end up having to go back to doing SneakerNet backups. I thought that it was worth trying to find out if anyone knew what might be going wrong before I threw in the towel.
I had been using it without incident for about a week, when suddenly, the day before yesterday, it started wanting to make a whole new backup. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the backup that is already there -- I can go into "Star Wars" and browse it without issue, and I have verified it with DiskUtility. It doesn't do it every time, and sometimes will run a normal incremental backup without incident. In particular, if I stop the huge full backup, delete the extra sparsebundle it's just made, and then run a backup again right afterward, it will run a normal incremental backup.
Here's the log of its most recent full backup, at least up to where it is now (it's currently in the middle of the long, long process of re-backing up every darned thing). Is there anything there that gives anyone an idea why it's doing this? As you can see, it's made a "Polythene Pam 1.sparsebundle" despite there already being a seemingly fine "Polythene Pam.sparsebundle" on the disk.
Thank you very much for any assistance you can provide.

Time Machine Backup Failing For No Apparent Reason

W500 broke down for no apparent reason
Dear all,
I have a W500 that worked fine for 4 years and suddenly started being faulty for no apparent reason.
I've searched the web and tried many fixes, but I still haven't been able to pinpoint the problem. At this point I suspect that the problem might implicate faulty hardware, though I am not sure. I would really appreciate any suggestions that could help me figure it out and (hopefully) fix it.
The laptop is a ~5 year-old W500 that came with Vista install but was upgraded to windows 7 after a couple of months. I made the BIOS upgrade at that point, but not since.
After trying to rescue it without success, I eventually reset the BIOS to default settings and reinstalled windows 7, and I am now able to use the computer but with many persisting problems.
Current symptoms
Slow boot time (4-5 min until I can start using windows) with occasional failure to start windows (hangs for hours before log on screen, but without crashing)
Initially failed to shut down, but uninstalling the dvd drive in windows seems to have fixed this.
Black screen appears on two occasions during boot. (1) between the "please wait" screen and the log on screen, and (2) after logging after the "welcome" screen. Each stays for around a minute (I guess they also show on healthy systems but too short to be noticed)
Windows is generally slow and prone to failures. Browsing windows explorer sometimes works fine, sometimes hangs for several tens of seconds. Launching programs takes an unreasonable amount of time (up to several minutes in some cases). Installing programs is incredibly slow and often fails.
Initially, after reinstalling windows, it looked like windows explorer did not refresh itself automatically anymore: if I created a new folder for example, it would not appear until I hit the refresh button. Somehow, this issue seems to have resolved itself, perhaps when uninstalling the cdrom, but I couldn't swear.
Booting in safe mode hangs after loading CLASSPNP.sys, which apparently is a recurring problem. In my case, after re-installing the OS it only hangs for 2-3 minutes and eventually safe mode successfully starts.
Yesterday the graphics driver failed multiple times, which never occurred before (well, maybe once, and a long long time ago). The first time the computer restarted automatically, and the next couple of times the screen just went black but the computer was still running.
Apparently I am unable to restore to factory state using the rescue&recovery environment. The partition which I believe to be the recovery partition (it has drive letter D: and no name, it guess this happened when installing the new OS) cannot be accessed from DOS (I/O error comes up, I am not sure if this is normal or not), and browsing it in windows explorer causes it to freeze. In safe mode it does appear in disk management, where is says 9.8GB, RAW, primary, healthy, 100% free space. Rescue and recovery environment does not start (perhaps as a consequence of this).
Since reinstalling windows the fingerprint reader does not work, and the "mouse wheel" function of the touchpad is broken (looks like the drivers are missing, but I can live with that for now)
Additional details
As I mentioned above I've had this laptop for 4-5 years and it always worked properly without major glitches. Then one day windows suddenly failed to start without reason, although on rare occasions I was able to log in after a very long boot (which suggests to me that it might not be completely broken but just took forever to start up windows), but then it would also fail to shut down (hanged forever at the "windows is shutting down" screen.
Thinking back, the laptop did on rare occasions fail to start windows, but would always start the next time and never failed to shut down as far as I remember. Lately I also noticed freezing on some occasions, which at that time I thought might be related to the DVD because they seemed to happened only when the DVD was in use.
After many unsucessful attempts to recover the current system I reinstalled windows 7, and now windows is more or less running, but with the symptoms described above.
I've run chkdsk /F /R /B, sfc /scannow, and windows memory diagnostic multiple times, as well as several lenovo diagnostic tools (CPU, memory, optical, graphics and perhaps a couple of others); none of them returned any error (1 bad sector added to list by chkdsk last time it ran).
Questions
Any suggestions/feedback?
At this point, is there a chance it could help to reformat the entire drive and reinstall windows?
In particular, I'm not sure why I need the recovery partition if I (1) it doesn't work and (2) I have an installation CD for the OS anyway.
Also, would it safe to remove the SERVICEV003 partition?
I've read somewhere that to restore to factory state you need to mark the recovery partition as "active" - is this true, and could it be the reason that rescue&recovery environment does not start?
Is it any use updating the BIOS at this point?
Also, is there any chance that playing around with the BIOS config could result in a working configuration?
If the problem is a hardware problem, how can I figure out which is the faulty component?
Is it possible to completely disable, e.g., the DVD drive, without physically unplugging it (BIOS doesn't seem to allow this, and even though uninstalling it in windows seemed to fix the shutdown problem, I know that the DVD is still working because e.g. I can boot from it).
Is there a way to completely disable one of the graphics card to check whether problem could come from it?
I've been considering pulling out the HD and memory to check if there is any misconnection/dirty connector. Is is even worth trying (I usually try refrain as much as possible from messing with laptop's inside) ?
I will update if I remember anything important or if there is any major new development.
Thanks in advance for your help!137 attempted reallocations with 6 currently pending. Your drive is probably on its way out.
Back-up your data immediately. You could try running SpinRite or HDD Regenerator on the drive to try and fix it, but chances are you should just replace it.

I have no sound on my MacBook Air for sending and receiving messages. All sound settings have been checked and are OK. This problem has arisen many times and is intermittent in the sense that the sound returns and disappears for no apparent reason.
Open System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects
Select: Play user interface sound effects
And make sure the Mute box is not selected.
Now open Mail. From the Mail menu bar clik Mail > Preferences then select the General tab.
Make a selection from the: New messages sound pop up menu. -

Sometimes, for no apparent reason, I lose a note in my notes application. This happens when I either have just opened a notes page or when next time I open my ipad, a note just isn't there anymore. It does seem to occur randomly i.e. independent of note size or age. Very annoying. I guess it can only be retrieved from iCloud before the next automatic back-up? Does anyone know why this happens and what can be done about it to prevent it in future? Is there a limit to how many note pages this app can store (presently I have about 70). I have started to email every note I make on my iPad to myself to be on the safe side. Is the Notes App really so unreliable? Anyone else with the same problem?

For the last couple of days my iMac has been crashing for no apparent reason. The only thing I have done that is new is to download, install and play Tomb Raider, from the app store. Each time I have has a crash I have run disk doctor and had no disk errors, and only a minor permissions error.
The following is an EtreCheck report, and also the latest crash report. Would appreciate any help I can get.

Queues in READY status for no apparent reason
Dear All,
This question has been posted many times but never saw a conclusive answer on this forum.
To repeat, I see queues being built in READY status in APO inbound for no apparent reason.
All settings of scheduler being fine (SMQS - Type R), there are large number of queues awaiting to be manually unlocked from READY status and they get cleared on unlock. There are no waiting queues but still entries in say an update of a stock queue are like 70+. I am able to clear them manually but that would be stupidity when I am talking of 30K queues build up thus.
Its not that not a single queue is moving. Some are getting processed (RUNNING) on their own but thats at snails speed as compared to the queues in READY.
I have scheduled the report /SAPAPO/RCIFRESTART that seems to have scheuled something in the background but I cant trace that job.
Please help.
Regards,
LoknathLoknath,
If you have 'many' queues 'RUNNING' for a long period of time, LUWs that are inline behind them will eventually stop trying. You can restart these queues with the /SAPAPO/RCIFRESTART program mentioned above.
There are lots of ways to tune queues to meet business requirements. Speak to your local CIF expert.
Some people use a job to run /SAPAPO/RCIFRESTART on a regular schedule. I have seen a system where this job is scheduled to run hourly.
30K queues is not really reasonable. If you always have this backlog, then there is a performance issue that needs to be addressed (SCM is not able to process the data as fast as ECC is sending). If this is a startup, then you just have to be patient. Initial loads can sometimes take days to fully clear all queues, especially if the SCM is sized a bit on the small side. Continue restarting until you have cleared all queues, then see if they begin to build again.
Best Regards,

Mid 2011 21.5" iMac restarts for no apparent reason
just started a month ago and my machine is only 4 1/2 months old. It restarts for no apparent reason no matter what app I'm in. The apple techs can't find a reason for it and just say 'clean install'. Well, it's had 4 clean installs in two weeks with no help in sight. I know others have this problem and I wish I knew who at Apple I could contact to see about a replacement instead of being jerked around by the apple store.
After it restarts, does it present a dialog box like this:
Next time they recommend "clean install" please have them show you an Apple Knowledge Base document that defines it, because without knowing what it is makes it difficult to know what they did. -
Backing Files Stop Working For No Apparent Reason. Help?
I have a portal application accessing a remote WSRP PageFlow portlet. The remote portlet populates a backing file and the producer application reads the data. It was working fine and then it stopped working for no apparent reason. The data was simply null, no errors or warnings. I put traces in the backing file and verified that the life-cycle methods were indeed being called and that data was there, and yes, both were indeed the case. Data is being set on the SimpleStateHolder and it's just not transferring over to the producer side.
In order to rule out environmental issues, I've done this on multiple machines. Also, I started a whole new project, got backing file setup, verified that it worked, started developing with it and one time I deployed and it was broken again. I rolled out the changes I had just made but it didn't matter. The earlier code still failed to work although it had been working moments earlier.
So, any ideas? Has anybody else encountered backing file issues like this and if so do you have any suggestions on debugging or fixing them?
