CS6 and ram

CS6 on a late 2011 17" Mac Book Pro 2.5 processor and 8Gb ram, with Firefox, iTunes and 1 d800 nef file open I seem to have just under 4 Mb ram free, working on the image and then saving a tiff version I close the file down ready to start on another image but and I am not sure if this a mountain lion or CS6 issue but I do not see the ram quantity freeing up in consequence by the time I have worked on 4 or 5 images I have no free ram left and I am getting page outs and swop file usage resulting in a general slow down with progress bars appearing for some simple tasks such as cropping or sharpening. I do not understand a lot of the under the bonnet settings so if anyone could offer any advice I would be grateful.

Photoshop, by its design, allocates then holds onto RAM, even when you close the document you've been working on.
While working on an given document it makes history states of everything you do, then writes data to its scratch file(s) whenever it accumulates enough data in RAM to reach the pre-set limit you have programmed in the Photoshop - Preferences - Performance dialog.
So the questions are:
1.  What have you set as Photoshop's RAM limit in Preferences - Performance?
2.  What other things do you expect to continue to run while running Photoshop?  This should influence your RAM limit setting.  The OS takes a gigabyte or so, and you'll want to set Photoshop to leave at least that much, or more if you like to have several things running at once.
3.  Have you considered your needs for History states?  Configuring it to remember fewer history states means that it won't build up data in RAM as quickly and if you don't do big jumps back in history this can reduce the impact Photoshop has on your system.
4.  If you use your Macbook for intensive work, have you considered SSD?  SSD storage is a good alternative to spinning hard drives, as it allows MUCH higher data swapping rates.

  • CS6 and RAM (Win7 64bit)

Am getting ready to get my next computer started this coming week and now trying to see if 16 Gb RAM is sufficient.. in other words is 32 Gb RAM worth an extra $120 in terms of performance. Will be using Intel 3770K CPU. Major usage for Pshop is digital images. Presently working with 18MP files and anticipate by summer's end to be working with 100-180Mb Tif files.
GPU.. am planning on using built in HD4000 Intel graphics, at least at first. Thx in advance!

    Thx Trevor,
Is always interesting when "things" change. Currently am still an XP holdout and now that Win 8 is on the near horizon I'm transitioning to Win7 64. Once I was an early adopter and "enjoyed" the growing pains but as I've aged and dealing with longer work hours, and other issues, my desire for the bleeding edge has gone away.. stability is a key for me!
To say 16Gb "should" be enough just sounds funny! But doubling RAM right now will add about $120 to the cost of my build which is already nearing the $2K mark, and I just cannot find any real evidence the extra 16 Gb is going to make CS6 run visibly better. I was going to us the built in HD4000 GPU of the 3770K CPU but am now getting information that CS6 may well benefit from a dedicated graphics card. In past CS seemed to make little use of GPU.
Is odd that Pshop would still use a sratch disk with that much RAM but am curious then about using RAM to set up a RAM disk ala the old days in Win 3.1 when RAM disks were essential for speed. If I bought the extra RAM I was going to pursue setting up a RAM disk and use it for the scratch disk. if possible that would certainly speed things up.
I am also going down path of an SSD for my boot disk but (and have not yet researched it yet) saw the Seagate "hybrid" drives that might work well for a scratch disk.. the 750 Gb hybrids are about $140 at this time and without question would be fast, as long as theya rent limited by number of writes like SSD's are.
So that is my balance point... 16 Gb versus 32 Gb and to have a dedicated GPU or use HD4000 for CS6. I have an ATI V4900 in current machine I could reuse but its OpenGl support in XP has bene dismal and so am considerng the Quadro 600 nvidia card in hopes the drivers are better, if I go dedicated GPU route. Right now it I am leaning toward 16 Gb and Nvidia GPU but will again sleep on it!

  • Motherboard and Ram for CS6

I am ordering my components for a custom build to run CS6. I had someone put together a components list for me, and I looking for a second opinion on the motherboard and ram.

  • After Effects CS6 error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback - any ideas please?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm running After Effects CS6 (11.0.4.2) on a MacBook Pro 2.8Ghz with 16GB RAM (Mac OS 10.9.4)
As a test, I created a 3 and a half minute Sequence in Adobe Premiere CS6, and then imported this into After Effects CS6, and placed it on the AE timeline.
This footage involves a couple of 1920x1080p footage movies, some psds and a large number of JPGs exported from two videos arranged as a sequence in two layers in Premiere, one on top of the other. So all in all for a Premiere / After Effects file I'd say it's reasonably heavy.
I then did a RAM Preview with Multiprocessing switched off - the 3 and a half minute sequence loaded into RAM, taking about 1min 30seconds, and played back in realtime at 25fps. This worked fine with 3,4,5 and 6 GB RAM available to other applications in the Memory Preferences. All things considered I think this is quite good. I can make changes, reclick the RAM Preview icon and my changes load into RAM and it previews ok.
My only 'complaint' is how long the RAM Preview takes to load up the whole thing.
I've been reading up on Multiprocessing and decided to try this to see if I can speed up the time it takes my RAM Preview to load up.
So I looked at some recommendations from Adobe and read information on various forums including this one.
My settings in the Memory Preferences are currently
    • 6GB reserved for other applications
    • Reduce cache size when system is low on memory - unticked
    • After Effects Multiprocessing - ticked
    • Installed CPUs (processor cores) - 8
    • CPUs reserved for other applications - 6
    • RAM allocation per background CPU - 3GB
    • Actual CPUs that will be used - 2
This combination takes about 25 seconds to load up my 3 and a half minute sequence which I thought was pretty amazing.
I then pressed the stop button and then the play button - so now just playing the sequence briefly.
And also added a new layer - into the timeline - just a simple shape.
Then I tried a RAM Preview again.
I found I could load up part of the sequence but not load the whole thing into RAM.
I kept trying to get a RAM Preview and got this message
"After Effects error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback" which seems to prevent RAM Preview from working.
Eventually I quit and restarted After Effects and the problem went away temporarily and then came back when I tried again.
I tried various changes to the Memory Preferences - trying 3GB available for other applications. This gave 13GB of my 16GB RAM to After Effects.
This made it take slightly longer for the After Effects error to appear but it still appeared.
I tried ticking Reduce Cache size in the Memory Prefs  - the After Effects error still appeared, so having read this is supposed to make the issue better I now leave it untucked, but as far as I can see ticked or untucked, it makes no difference, the problem remains.
    I've since tried -
Making 2,3,4,5 and 6 CPUs available for other applications.
Changing the Background RAM allocation per background CPU to 0.75GB, 1GB, 1.5GB, 2GB and 3GB
    Lots of combinations.
But in the end, I always get the "After Effects error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback" error.
It might take less or more time for the message to show up, depending on the combination of settings, but in the end I always got the same message appearing.
And I notice that I can RAM Preview less and less of the timeline. i.e. it becomes more blue than it does green and will load in only a small section of the timeline as opposed to the whole thing.
Reading further, I tried Edit > Purge > Image Cache and Edit > Purge > All Memory but still get the error message.
I also tried ensuring there were no other applications running e.g. Safari or Chrome or Firefox. And certainly not Photoshop or Premiere etc.
Reading even further, I tried two Memory management applications - 'Memory Clean' and 'Purge.'
Neither has had any effect - the After Effects error still appears.
Then I went back into the Memory and Multiprocessing Preferences.
I unticked Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously. And now the RAM Preview loads the whole 3 and half minute sequence in entirety, taking about 1 and half minutes to do so. It's working as perfectly as if I'd just quit and re-opened the application.
Then I went back into the Memory and Multiprocessing Preferences.
I reticked Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously.
The chose Edit > Purge > All
And tried a RAM Preview again. It loaded up in 25 seconds, but then, as previously, the error message came.
I tried Edit > Purge All - no effect.
And I tried going into the Media and Disk Cache Preferences and clicked Empty Disk Cache - still the problem remains.
I understand from my reading that After Effects CS6 11.0.2 was intended to fix this issue but I'm on 11.0.4 and as far as I can tell, I still have it - assuming it's the same thing.
As far as I can see, not using Multiprocessing allows me to work without these errors but take a bit longer to load the RAM Preview.
However I'd like to be able to use Multiprocessing as it seems it can potentially speeds things up quite a lot. I realise I could just not use it and AE would work, but I'd rather be able to make use of a feature of the software if possible, especially if it will speed things up and make optimum use of the my computer's hardware.
I've downloaded a trial copy of After Effects CC 2014. I'm still testing it but as far as I can see the RAM Preview error appears in this version of AE as well, but can take bit longer to show up in my experience.
Thanks everyone - if anyone has any thoughts or advice I'd appreciate hearing your opinions.
    Kind regards,
    John

You need to have much more RAM reserved for other applications and more CPUs reserved for other applications. Your current settings are crippling your performance.
    Read these:

After you have adjusted your settings according to the recommendations on those pages, restart your computer and try again.

  • After Effects CS6 and CC crash when Composition panel is closed, moved, switched w/ Layer panel, etc

Kind of hard to word the problem in a non-confusing way, but here goes. After Effects CS6 and CC will only work if the Composition panel is in its default spot in the Standard workspace, and that it's the only thing displayed there. No layer or footage panels can be opened  - it can only be Comp or nothing.
In other words, AE is 100% certain to crash if:
    - The composition panel is closed or moved to another spot in the workspace.
    - A file from the project is double-clicked and opened as a layer/footage panel
    - Any attempt is made to switch the Standard workspace to another
The crappiest thing about this is that I've searched Google using as many different phrases as I can and haven't found any discussion about this particular problem. It's as if I'm the only one on Earth who is having this issue.
It should be noted that After Effects CS5 does not have this problem on my PC, but I need CS6 or better because that's what we're using at work now. I can't work from home (as I need to do occasionally) if AE won't work properly.
    System:
    Windows 7 PC, 12GB RAM, Quad-core AMD Phenom II X4 965 @ 3.7 Ghz, ATI Radeon HD 6700 series GPU (1GB)

It's not like a regular crash that instantly closes the program and has a "sorry, AE crashed" popup. It basically just freezes until the process is forced to quit.

  • Premiere Pro CS6 and Media Encoder CS6 Color shift on export

    Hello,
I am working on an early 2008 Mac Pro with 2 X 3.2 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon Processors 32 GB of RAM a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB Graphics Card and I am running OS X 10.8.2.
I have the updated Version of Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 and Media Encoder CS6 through the awesome Subscription program that Adobe has started.
My footage is shot with the Canon 1D Mark IV shot 1920X1080 at 24 FPS
I am importing the camera files and then exporting them after I cut them up in to Quicktime Pro Res 422 HQ files
With the technical explination out of the way here is my problem. I have color right from the camera files that I like. and with out doing any thing to change the color I export the footage and get a dramatic color shift. The exported file looks desaturated and slightly green.
I have tried using Media Encoder CS6 to export my footage and that has the same result.
I started my career as a photographic retoucher and use photoshop and light room constantly so I am pretty confident that i know color. I also calibrate my Lacie 526 and Lacie 324i montiors monthly as well as have a sensor that will slightly shift the profile depending on the time of day.
I have attached three screen shots that show the color shift exactly. Now what I need is a solution. What I am not seeing is color settings for Premiere. I am totally open to any suggestions on what I might be doing incorrectly.

I've been doing this for a few years now, and have come to some conclusions. Basically, the difference between still photography and video is like the difference between playing the trumpet and the sax. What you bring to the sax from playing trumpet is your ability to read music, what you know about composition, blending while playint with others, ect. But playing trumpet tells you nothing about how to physically play a sax. So it is with still photography and video.
For starters, your carefully calibrated computer monitor is just that, a computer monitor. It doesn't display the correct working space for video. What you need for WYSIWYG in video is a monitor that can show you the Rec.709 working space. Rec.709 has a different gamut, a different gamma, probably a different white point (D65), different phosphor colors, etc., etc., etc. Enought differences that it's difficult to make a computer monitor that can successfully display Rec.709. Yet there are a couple of computer monitors that can do this (a few Eizos, one HP). The vast majority of people doing serious color correction work in video use a production monitor for just this reason.
But a production monitor isn't enough. You also have to make sure that the signals you're sending the production monitor are correct. There's a sub-industry making signal converters for signals from NLE video cards (usually RGB based) -> signals for production monitors (usually YUV based).
That said, it is certainly possible to get a very good match between your NLE suite and a DVD / BD as displayed on an HDTV. But it's not as simple or easy as a calibrtated computer monitor for still photography use.
This is probably part of your problem. But Quicktime is probably the root of it. Quicktime is, well, I guess the polite way of saying it is that Quicktime is problematic. It gives all kinds of problems. Most people have abandoned it. You should too.

  • Photoshop bug: cs6 and cc: interface freeze, no reaction

    hello,
we discovered a potential bug or issue in photoshop:
under daily working conditions, 8h per day, during the last months/year i can observe the following behavior:
suddenly, at any action, the photoshop interface (all palettes, windows, everything) freezes and doesnt react on any mouse or button command. can wait for minutes, nothing happens.
found workaround: switch to finder by clicking with mouse pointer into the finder desktop,
and switch back to photoshop > interface is back and reacts again, everythings fine.
condition of bug: very annoying but can live with it so far through my workaround
frequenzy: several times a day (up to 20 or 30 times per day)
    - reproduceable  on mac osx 10.7 + 10.8 + 10.9
    - reproduceable with photoshop cs6 and cc
    - reproduceable on 3 different macs at 2 different working places so far
    - mac pro 2006, mac pro 2012, imac late 2013 with each mac 48GB RAM or at least 32GB RAM (imac)
    - reproduceable with 8 bit and 16 bit files, .psd and .psb
    any idea?
    thanks

If I remember correctly, and that is not always the case, I think that is a bug in Apple OS.  Currently the cursor just dissapears and you have to do what you say to get it back.

  • Which is more important for Adobe CS6 and FCX on imac? Processor or Graphics Card?

Hi, I want to get the new 27" imac when it comes out this December. It will be my first mac although I have both an iPhone and iPad. I'm and artist and aspiring filmmaker and want to run Adobe CS6 and Final Cut Pro on it. I'm looking at the highest 27" but have limited funds for additional upgrades. Apart from RAM, what would i be better off upgrading on the imac? Going from the i5 to the i7? or going for the GTX 680mx Graphics card with 2gb of memory? or going for the 1TB Fusion drive? If you could only pick one or possibly 2, which would be the best to choose for video and graphics on the programs I mentioned? (I'm not into gaming, so performance on that front is of no concern to me)

    I don't have CS6...
    1) I would max out the video card. FCP X and Motion 5 uses the GPU over the CPU for processing power. Once you buy your new iMac you can't upgrade this...
    2) FCP X and Motion 5 will use all the ram you can throw at it. I have 16 GB of ram and both programs at times uses all 16 GB of ram. I really should bump up my ram to 32 GB. I would say 16 GB is the minimum for video.
    3) The processor would be last on my list. Computers are really fast even with an i5 processor. Once you buy your new iMac you can't upgrade this...
This is the iMac I bought last year:
    27" iMc mid-2011
    3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB

  • HELP! Jerky playback on Premiere Pro 6.0.2 CS6 and Retina MBP (16GB)

    Dear all!
Please help me to solve this problem!
It's going on Premiere Pro 6.0.2 CS6 and Retina MBP with 16GB RAM installed.
    CUDA Driver Version: 5.0.24
    MacBook Pro Retina, Mid 2012
Processor  2,7 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.1 (12B19)
    Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 (6.0.2. - 072)
While playing back inside PP a jerky playback occurs, every 1-2 seconds it rewinds to 2-3 frames back and continues to play forth...
No special console messages or something similar visible.
Have tried to clean the cache but it doesn't help. Also have tried to switch the mode between CUDA, OpenCL and SW - without any visible changes...
    Exhausted... Please HELP!!!!

avrbox, I had the same problem and went crazy because I didn't find a proper solution. I use Windows, though. Finally, I got to fix the problem. I use a i5 processor, which I overclocked with an asrock tool that came with the mainboard (to about 3350 MHZ where the system ran stable). When I turned overclocking off, Premiere played back the clips just fine. I overclocked then step by step until the playback went jerky again and kept that frequency. Maybe your processor is overclocked by stock or you did it manually?
    Hope this is your solution!

  • Issues with Illustrator CS6 and Intuos5

    Hello,
I'm fairly new to Adobe CS and I've been running into a few issues. I've used it fairly consistently at work, but I want to branch out and do some graphic design on my own, so I bought a student license and set about teaching myself! Anyway, I got a Wacom Intuos5 medium tablet to go with this and I think it's causing a few issues. First, it seems like it's causing Illustrator CS6 to crash on launch. If I open an Illustrator document (I'm running Win7 64bit with 16gb of RAM), I get a message that Illustrator CS6 has stopped working. I close that pop-up and try to open the same document again and it opens just fine. I read in a release note that this is due to a plugin associated with Inkling, but I don't have that installed, so I'm not sure that this is what I'm experiencing. I've uninstalled the tablet and went about launching Illustrator again and it seems to working just fine. Is there a fix for this?
Second, I was just getting familiar with the brush tool the other day and noticed that when I used the tablet, the brush tool just quits drawing after about 7 seconds. So I made the same scribbles (just making figure eights over and over again) with my mouse and it seems to cut out after about 15 seconds this time. Is there something I might be doing wrong or this normal? Has anyone else experienced this?
Also, I'm running two SSDs and a 1TB HDD. I have WIN7 and other small things on one SSD and CS6 currently installed on the other SSD. Could this be an issue? I'm at work right now, but I plan on uninstalling both the table and CS6 and only installing CS6 onto my WIN7 SSD to see if this clears anything up.
Thanks for any suggestions ahead of time!
    Tom

    Hi Larry,
I reinstalled CS6 onto my main drive and I still got the crashing on launch. It's clearly the tablet that's creating the issue. Is there anything else you suggest?
    Thanks!

  • FAQ: How do I trim in the Timeline using keyboard shortcuts in Premiere Pro CS6 and CC?

You can now trim with a lot more keyboard shortcuts in the Timeline in Premiere Pro CS6 and CC. See this article for details: Timeline trimming using keyboard shortcuts in Premiere Pro CS6.

I'm relieved (if a little frustrated!) that others have the same issues, it makes me feel at least it's not just me! :-)
I am running Windows 7 64 bit Intel quad core processor 8Gb RAM if that helps Jim?
Another quick test shows I have exactly the same issues as shooternz and Ann Bens above at 7 & 8 respectively. An audio only or audio/video clip from Bin to SM and I can add markers on the fly perfectly. Audio/video from the timeline to SM works just the same. Audio only from the timeline will not work however.
I tried linking a video clip to my audio clip to see if that would allow me to add markers then unlink and remove the video... but when I opened that in SM the add marker button was greyed out and the keyboard shortcut (M) didn't work either!
    Curiouser and curiouser...

  • Premiere crashes as soon as i open a project. CS6 and CC both

I have Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 and CC. They have both worked for about a month, in the trial version and now they both don't. I can open premiere and it opens up fine. I can see my recent projects and open one. When I open the project I have between 2 and 60 seconds until it shuts down. If I go into manage cloud settings in the bottom left corner of Premiere CC, Premiere stays open. But only until I close the settings window and then it closes again. I get almost no error codes. While opening it sometimes says that mercury playback was used last time and does not work now due to hardware or something along those lines. CS6 gives me a Workspace.cpp-209 error sometimes. I am on Windows 7, 8GB ram, Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2100 CPU @3.10 GHz 3.10 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce 210 Display adaptor. Please Help, I can not find anything on google.
Ps. I bought Premiere Pro CC today.

I uninstalled Adobe Premiere CC 2014, Adobe Photoshop CC 2014, Adobe Media Encoder CC 2014, and i tried to uninstall Adobe creative cloud. For some reason it said uninstalled with errors. I also uninstalled the whole CS6 suite. Now I reinstalled Adobe Creative Cloud, Premiere Pro CC, And Adobe Media Encoder. Premiere Pro and Media Encoder installed with errors again. Here is what I got, basically saying that Microsoft Visual C++ couldnt install.

Since there wheere 0 fatal errors i tried premiere. Nope, no change.
So I did what the text told me to. I tried to manually install them. That didn't work because the windows installer service was not running. I made that service start up and then manually installed all the Visuall C++ that it told me to. After successfully installing them all I restarted and tried Premiere Pro again. Still the same thing happened. I am very much out off ideas now, but i hope i gave you the info that can help, and maybe i overdid the info.
