Ctrl/Cmd-U Actions

I just today looked into this shortcut. It has advantages, at least for a look-see, but it also has a problem.
When choosing multiple images to open in ACR, "Select All and Synchronize", the process does not synchronize when selecting the shortcut. Each image is corrected on it's own, and all the slider values from Exposure to Contrast go blank. Checking the settings of each image separately shows that they are not equally set, as now all the slider values are visible.
There is a workaround for this by simply  picking the frame best suited first,  hitting "Select All", then "Synchronize" again, and now all the values are the same, and the info in the sliders are shown.
I suspect this is a bug, because I can tell you that if the set of images to be corrected are part of a stitch, it will be strange. You may as well have the camera on auto when running the set in the field, then not even use ACR before the stitch.
Now, when the individual images are not intended for stitch, as perhaps in a series of wedding photos, that individual setting for each frame might be of value, but not being informed of the auto function applying different settings when in Synchronize is not any sort of advantage from my POV.

Since the weather is so bad and a problem with Win7 yielded to a solution faster than expected, I decided to amuse myself by messing more with all the sliders in ACR.
For my defaults, all the sliders are set at the basic defaults existing when I first opened ACR, except that I set the Clarity to 10. Camera Calibration is set at camera Standard, all the rest of the control panels are at neutral or 0.
So I ran some images using Auto or Ctrl-U as a starting point. Without exception, the Brightness and Contrast were the most commonly moved sliders. Seems I simply cannot get it right in the camera. (What a dufus! )
One particular image grabbed my attention as virtually all the sliders had moved. I hated the result, so I proceeded from that point to readjust to my taste. A few minutes later, I was reasonably satisfied. All the sliders were at some point other than default and other than Auto. One would expect that. So I unchecked Preview. Whut? No change! Try again.Yep the tiniest of change was noted. So watching the Histogram, I set the system back to Camera RAW defaults, and sure enough the barest shift in the histogram was noticed, mostly a shape change in the blue channel, and the image looks the same as the adjusted image.
The point I am trying to make is that the sliders, when set by eye for best results, were way off the defaults yet the image and histogram matched. So, why all the sliders? I recall that a person asked why as well since the Exposure slider and the Brightness apparently do the same thing. The current writer for the ACR manual said they actually were different yet it seems that I can neutralize the Exposure slider with Brightness, and visa versa.
FAPP, other than test, I never touch the Brightness slider, sometimes the contrast slider. I can always get very close with the rest available. The Black slider is offensive past about 9 or so as the image saturates to the extent that I have to resort to the Sat and Vibrance controls to balance it out. If Luminosity was a choice for blending in ACR, I would definitely use it to kill off the excessive color shift just to get a good black. So I reserve this for PS where I do have this control.
Anyway, this is one person's perspective on ACR, which is a wonderful app so far as I am concerned.
If I had my druthers, here are a few changes to be made:
Introduce Blending Mode
Provide History (important when using the Adjustment Brush)
Be consistent with how functions operate, and allow the departures from expected to be the exception, not the rule (Auto in multiple image correction)
Fix the Adjustment Brush so that the size change key works all the time (Same for several brush modes in PS, like The Burn, Dodge and Sponge tool)
Ok I can hear it now. "That's not a bug, it's a feature!"

As title says. I have no idea why. When I press the power button nothing happens at all - no lights, no fans no video. Pressing the ctrl & cmd buttons at start-up is the only way it will turn on. It's a 2008 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.6.8.
If it's useful at all, after much to-ing and fro-ing I managed to get Apple to replace the logic board in Oct 2012 (free) under the Nvidia programme. So I'm hoping that it's not the logic board again as there's no way I could afford (nor would it be econmical) to have it replaced.
Anybody have any ideas on what the problem could be and how I might be able to rectify it?

  • What happened to the ability to hide the "marching ants" (CTRL/CMD H) in Photoshop?  I cannot view the edges of my selection with the marching ants in the way!

I have been using Photoshop since version 2.5 when it came on 16 floppy disks.  In all of the versions I've purchased over the years (many) up to CS3, I have always been able to use CTRL+H (Windows) or CMD+H (Mac) to hide the "marching ants" selection outline.  This is immensely useful when making all sorts of adjustments where the edge of the selection must be viewed while "fiddling with the knobs" (so to speak).  Without being able to hide the selection boundaries ("marching ants"), I often have to make a best guess, undo the selection, get bummed that the edge isn't what I want, then have to undo, reselect, try again... over and over.   This is such a SIMPLE feature, but the lack of it is driving me crazy.  I searched HELP, but it didn't live up to the promise.  If there is a way to hide the marching ants, where is the menu item, and what is the shortcut?

You can assign Ctrl/Cmd H to hide Selection Edges (Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts) only, if you don't want to hide everything, but you will be warned if some other function has the shortcut.

  • Actions not working from CS6 to CS5

I use a series of actions that were created in CS6 and are not that complicated. They resize and align an object to coordinates with the center reference point and proportions constrained. I assumed that they would translate to other coworker’s machines with cs5 and cs5.5, but they do not work. The actions appear to load properly, but do not run like they should.
When I hit the assigned hotkey, the selected object moves, but not to the correct location and does not change size as it is supposed to. Also, I can try to manually play individual parts of the action (moving to a reference point or resizing to a certain width) and nothing happens. Not even a wiggle. When I do try to do them one at a time, the small downward triangle button that reveals details of the action disappears and when I click again I get an error message that says 'the object "transform panel" is not available.' I assume this means that action is looking for a location that has changed name or something, but I don't know how they work well enough to spot any differences when viewing the action with a text editor.
    All of the computers I tried had win7. Mine is CS6 (v 16.0.2 64-bit), 2 others had CS5 and 5.5.

I have uploaded them here: http://ge.tt/63PjiIU/v/0
The actions all have hotkeys assigned to them. I never noticed it in cs6 when I set up the commands, but in the cs5 computer that I was looking at had conflicts with using f5, f6, f7, and f8. Not sure if yours will too.
The actions are designed for a document with multiple art boards but they will work if you only have one for testing purposes. All the commands are meant for a single object or a single group. Align must be set to art board, proportions constrained, and set the center reference point, but if you don't have them, they still should still function. The art board must be 14" x 11".
Pressing F5 will align object to a position in the upper left corner of the art board. F6, lower left. F7 and F8 will do the same for the right side. The actions will resize the object to a specific width, height is not important.
Adding a modifier of ctrl/cmd or shift should give different actions to the ones listed above. You might want to test those out, but honestly if one works, they should all work.
Let me know if anything is confusing... I made them and they work for me, but I haven’t done any actions in the past and if they are sloppy, let me know.

  • TK Actions Panel Not Showing

I purchased the TK Actions/Video set from GoodLight.us. It comes with a set of Actions : "TKActions" which have been installed as directed into the CS5 Actions folder. They appear when Actions is opened and appear to function correctly. However, the Panel from the same set will not show in "Extentions"on the CS 5 page and it is supposed to as listed in the directions. It was copied/pasted in Plug-ins/Panel in Cs 5's program files.
I have updated the flash player since there was mention of Flash in some applications when I searched for help.
    Any ideas?

    http://goodlight.us/writing/actionspanelv3/panelv3.html
I have been able to speak with tony by phone and by email. I am certain that he will fix your problem.
    From tony to me (partial):
I'm writing to let you know that I recently posted a new version of the custom actions panel to create luminosity masks on my website: http://goodlight.us/writing/actionspanelv3/panelv3.html
This update was mandated by Adobe's forthcoming changes to Photoshop CC.  The next revision to PS CC (Photoshop 15), due out in a few weeks, will remove support for Flash-based panels.  The current TK-ACTIONS  and TK_ACTIONS panel use Flash to do their thing and will no longer work in the soon-to-be-released PS CC update.  HTML5 is the new standard for extension panels and is already incorporated into the current version of PS CC.  (Flash will continue to be the standard for Photoshop CS5 and CS6.)  Since I use PS CC and rely on the panel in my own developing workflow, I re-coded the panel using the new HTML5 standard.  This also gave me the opportunity to add some new features to the panel.
[NOTE: The revised panel has been tested in the current version of Photoshop CC (Photoshop 14) and a pre-release version of the next version of Photoshop CC (Photoshop 15) and works in both.  I have a webpage with preliminary information about installing and using the panel in Photoshop 15:  http://goodlight.us/writing/actionspanelv3/Photoshop-CC-new-version-update.html.  I will update this page as necessary.  Please bookmark it as a reference for additional information.]
The new panel is called "TKActions" and the link at the top of this email will tell you about it.  Once there you can download the PDF instructions that tell how the panel works and also watch some videos about it at the bottom of the page.  I'm particularly excited about the vids, which were produced by Sean Bagshaw.  I know the panel seems a bit overwhelming at first, so Sean's visual walk-through and practical demonstrations will go a long way towards making people proficient at using it.  Sean has an amazing ability to help students understand even complicated processes, and even though the panel isn't all that complex, I think it is going to be an even more useful tool for many photographers once they watch him use it in the videos.
Some of the new things in this version of the panel include:
    1)  A new two-tab layout for improved efficiency
    2)  Color-coded sections
    3)  "View" buttons to provide a visual overlay of which pixels are actually selected
    4)  Zone masks that focus adjustments to very narrow tonal ranges
    5)  Web-sharpening actions for vertical and horizontal dimensions and for high-definition dimensions
    6)  Several new buttons to correspond to some techniques discussed in recent blog posts.
    7)  One-click live selections (instead of Ctrl/Cmd-clicking a mask)
    8)  New buttons for creating adjustment layers and changing blending modes
    9)  Simplified subtracted mask generation
    10)  "Progressive actions" for experimenting with many different options
There are actually two versions of the panel in the download, one that works in Photoshop CC (HTML5 version) and one that works in Photoshop CS5/CS6 (Flash version).  So even if you haven't converted to Photoshop CC, the Flash version still provides access to the improved functions for Photoshop CS5/CS6.  Both versions are included in the download.

  • Can I convert a series of adjustment layers into a single action?

    Hello,
I have a Photoshop CS6 document with 20-some adjustment layers and would like to be able to apply their effect to multiple image files. I'm looking for a way to convert the series of adjustment layers into a single action so that I can batch process a set of images. Can this be done?
Unless I'm missing something, it appears that no trivial solution exisits. For example, there's no option that allows for selecting the adjustment layers, right clicking them, and choosing 'convert to action.' What I want to avoid is having to redo each adjustment layer just for the sake of recording an action.
Also, I understand that I can always "place" (i.e. drag and drop) the image requiring processing into the Photoshop document containing the adjustment layers, saving a merged copy as jpeg, and repeat... but such a manual method would border on insulting to this prowess of a program.
If anyone can get creative and suggest a method of recording an action that can make use of the document with the adjustment layers and a variable document that will be passed through during the batch process, I'm all eyes!
    Many thanks.

You have the other choice with drag/drop or duplicate where you copy the adjustment layers into the other image document.  Target all the adjustment layers in the layer palette click on the first one the Ctrl|CMD+click on the others or if adjacent Shift+click on the last one to target all the adjustment layer then use menu Layer>Duplicate Layers...  and use the pull down menu in the pop-up dialog to choose the other open image document.
You can of course record an action when you add all the adjustment layers then play that action on the other images. Twenty adjustment layer on top of an image seems a bit extreme to me.

  • Can't create actions

Hi! I am trying to create a new action in CS4. I've done this many time, without any problems. Now when I go the actions palette and click on the button for the fly out menu, the "New Action" choice is grayed out. I can't choose it. Why would this be? Thanks!
    Julie

    Julie,
When something stop working, it may be a preference corruption. In order to restore the preferences, you may either Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Option at startup, or Move the folder with Illy closed. The latter is reversible and takes care or more issues, but requires a greater effort, especially the first time used. See explanations in the latter
Reinstalling does not replace the preferences.

  • CS4: how to change cmd+H function?

Hi, I have recently got CS4 and one thing really bugs me, the cmd+H function has changed to ctrl+cmd+H.  It used to be used to show/hide frame edges but now cmd+H appears to have been taken over by the Mac system, to hide any and all applications. I'd like to change it back but I can't find how to change the keyboard setting - in either Indesign or Mac preferences. Which should I use?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, it's a little thing but I used cmd+H ALL the time and am finding it a hard habit to break! Indesign constantly *disappearing* on me is proving frustrating to say the least!

Tha's funny: googling for a solution I found these pages instead: Cmd-H Now the Mac InDesign Shortcut for "Hallelujah, It Hides" and Doing the right thing with Cmd-H (be sure to read the comments).
So it seems enough people complained to Adobe to make them change their initial choice. Perhaps they'll change their mind again.

  • Nautilus paste behavior (ctrl + v)

The ctrl + v behavior in nautilus mysteriously changed from actually copying the file to only pasting the path: a popup text box appears in the bottom right corner containing the path of the file. I have no idea what caused the behavioral change. I know it is not a matter of rights: pasting the file using the right click menu works, as is copying the file in console or in another file manager. I'm using nautilus in XMonad.

It seems that the problem comes from the file ~/.gnome2/accels/nautilus where you can find two line for ctrl+v : gtk_accel_path "<Actions>/DirViewActions/Paste" and (gtk_accel_path "<Actions>/ClipboardActions/Paste" "<Control>v") . The problem being the second one.
You can delete the entire file (or try just the line, I use to delete the directory accels without having any problem after), log out and log in again and it should work as expected (need to log out, nautilus -q is not enough). It works for me, even if I have to do it again some times.
this does not work for me

  • BugReport: ID CS4 - Ctrl+0

Finally got CS4 Design Premium and have installed.
One of the first things I noticed is what seems to be a bug. I searched the forums and found no mention of it though ....
The keyboard shortcut Ctrl+0 in ID seems to be set as the command for "Fit Page in Window" as well as "Zoom In".
Up 'til CS3 "Zoom In" was Ctrl++.
Unfortunately "Zoom In" takes priority when Ctrl+0 is pressed.
Is there a chance of this being corrected in the next update? I know I could save my own Keyboard shortcuts, but it seems silly to save a whole new set just for this one command.
    Cheers, and thanks, Angus

Yes, Ctrl (Cmd) + 0 is the default shortcut to fit the current page in the window, but in CS4 for Windows (Design Prem) it's also the shortcut for "Zoom In", and "Zoom In" takes precedence over "Fit to Page". It's strange however that you're not noticing it*.
I've checked the Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts in the Default Set and both are set as Ctrl+0 (instead of Ctrl++ for "Zoom In").
And nothing has been customized in ID yet. This was basically 5 mins after installing that I noticed.
I'll have a look and see if I can trash the Preferences, but I'm assuming that if the initial install set it up this way, that it'll rewrite the new preferences the same way.
*Are you using the Mac version? Mine is the PC version but we have a Mac version too. I'll check that and see if this is only a problem in the PC version.
