CUDA: running hardware mode on 9400M Mac Book

I've been trying to run the CUDA samples on my mac book w/ 9400M. A bunch of the samples say something like running on device: 0 emulated (CPU)...does this mean the code is not actually running on my GPU and is using my CPU? Do I have my CUDA and hardware setup correctly? I'm an epic N00b to CUDA and just starting to learn.

Here is what I had to do to get CUDA working on my Mac Book:
When installing the CUDA toolkit click the Customize button on the Installation Type panel of the installer. Then be sure that CUDAKext is selected for installation.
After installing I added the following to my .bash_profile.
export PATH=/usr/local/cuda/bin:$PATH
export DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/cuda/lib:$DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH
After installing the CUDA SDK I got the following linker error when I ran make.
ld: in ../../lib/libcutil.a, archive has no table of contents
To fix this I ran ranlib *.a in the CUDA lib directory.

  • I to use iphoto library manager to save corrupted iphoto and each time it saves some and the first time it brings up iphoto, iphone goes into "not responding" mode.  Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2.

I've had issues with my iPhoto "not responding" and as a result I am attempting to save my photos to an external hard drive using iPhoto library Manager but each time I start the program it saves some, and then when it starts iPhoto, iPhoto then goes into not responding mode. Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2. I have completed all of the photo library first aid steps several times, but it makes no difference, iphoto eventually goes to "not responding."  Initial issues started with Time Machine back ups stopping because of iphoto. Thanks......

Do you have a back up?
If you're just trying to recover the photos you can do that much more simply:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Originals' or 'Masters'. (varies according to the version of iPhoto)
Your photos are inside - these are the originals as imported from your camera.

  • I am in mavericks disk utility recovery mode as my mac book will not boot up & stays only on the grey apple screen. When I verify the disk I get open error5 :input /output error on Syst stuck on 1 minute pouring out over 50 error messages & still counting

I am in Mavericks disk utility recovery mode as my mac book pro will not boot up & stays on the Apple grey screen . When I verify disk permissions I get
Open error 5:"input/ output error" on syst with over 50 of this messages & still counting . Disk Utility says 1 minute
But this has been going on for over 10 mins .
I can not verify disk or repair disk .
I have tried to reinstall mavericks operating system but it says my hard drive is locked which is very strange .
Does anyone know what is going on here ?
My system looks like it has been totally corrupted . Thanks Andrew

Could be. The "lock" isn't actually looking for a password.
WARNING: This will completely erase the ENTIRE hard drive.
What you would need to do is boot to recovery > disk utility > select the MAIN drive on the left side > partition > change partition layout from CURRENT to 1 PARTITION > ensure on the right side it says Format : Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) then push APPLY.
Then if it will allow us, close the windows until you see the 4 options popup again and select "Reinstall Mac OS X" select the Mac HD and you should be good to go!

Will boot camp run windows XP on a Mac book pro retina

No. The newest Mac OS X version capable of setting up Windows XP or Vista in Boot Camp is 10.6.8, which is too old for that Mac model.
You may be able to use it inside a product such as VirtualBox, Parallels Desktop, or VMware Fusion.

  • Running FCP 4.5 on Mac Book Pro?

I have FCP 4.5 (Studio-Academic) running on a PBG4. I just bought a Mac Book Pro and want to install FCP. Will it run? Or can I get an upgrade to FCP 6? I need to be able to ingest from a Sony SxS Card into FCP. Thanks.

    Gotta upgrade for two reasons.
    1) FCP 4.5 was designed for PowerPC Macs...it won't run on the Intel computers. The first version that did was FCP 5.1
    2) Footage shot with a Sony EX1 on SxS cards requires FCP 6. That camera and codec came out many years after FCP 4.5 was released. FCP will not work with that format.

  • Is anybody running Logic Pro on a Mac Book Pro?

I am considering buying a Mac Book Pro and wanted to know if Logic runs fine on it. I probably will add a couple of libraries such as the EW Gold Symph Library which can be quit large. If I could get some info on that, I'd appreciate it. I know the Mac book Pro memory is extendable to 4 GB Ram, but, is it enough for the Logic Studio?
    Thanks

Latest project on my MBP had 17 tracks (9 SW instrument tracks and 8 audio tracks) each with at least two plugs. No problems....
Remember that if you get the dreaded resource warning messages you can always "Freeze" your SW instrument tracks to print the effects to audio files that are automatically stored in your project folder (so yes, it does suck up more HD space but really offloads the CPU).
Another tip is to turn Airport off when you are using LP8 as some people (raises hand) find they can get more tracks with Airport off.
And as already mentioned....you can get even more tracks if you have your projects and/or samples on a 7200 external drive.
    Go for it....it works great!!!

  • Running Hardware Test from second Mac?

My wife has a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac. It has a faulty DVD drive - actually a disc has been stuck in there for some time and we haven't been able to get it out. That is not our current issue, although it makes troubleshooting much harder.
Her iMac is getting slower and slower and I promised I'd run some tests. I can't run the Hardware Test on that machine from the original install disc because of the faulty DVD drive. I'd like to run the test remotely from my MacBook Pro but can't work out how to do that. I have tried booting her Mac in Target mode where I can run Disk Utility on my machine and repair her hard drive but when I insert her original Install Disc in my laptop there is no Hardware Test visible on it. I have tried to get access to my DVD drive from her iMac but 'DVD or CD Sharing' being turned on in 'Sharing Prefs' on my machine doesn't seem to bring up any shared discs on her computer. Maybe it's still trying to access her faulty DVD drive?
Is there anything I can do here to run some hardware tests on her machine? I'd like to do that before I start doing clean installs of the Mac OS on hard drives etc. I'm a bit stuck.
    Thank you

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
Running the AHT doesn't make much sense for fixing slowness. If the computer is working, then there is no hardware failure. See the following:
Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware

About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • Power saving mode freezing my mac book pro

    Dear all,
i have a MacBook Pro 15"  late 2009, which was coming with Snow Leopard.
I have two video cards installed, one GeForce 9400 for the longer battery life, and one GeForce 9600M GT for better performance.
Before installing OsX Lion both configuration were working perfectly, no any issue.
After the installation of Lion I can work only on high performance configuration.
If I choose the power saving config. after 3 to 5 minutes i get my system frozen, with the message that i must turn off my laptop by keep press the power button.
After reboot, i get automatically the high performance config, which has never shown this problem so far.
My question is: is a Lion problem with drivers for that graphic card? or is an hardware problem?
is there any way to solve this issue? I'm travelling on planes most of my time and a longer battery life span would help me a lot.
Now that i can choose only the high performance i got maximum 3 hours battery time, before with leopard in power saving config i had 5.5 hours.
    Any idea???
Thanks in advance for your reply.

no one has a clue about this problem?

  • Mac Book Pro running motion

Anybody running motion on a new Mac Book Pro? How do you like it? Is it worth upgrading from my Imac?

I love it and have no problems in using Motion on an MBP. You will need the Universal version of FCP Suite (with Motion) so be sure to budget for the upgrade or cross-grade.
I put the MBP to the test last week and was impressed with the results. We had to render 40 individual 3D animation clips user Poser over a 1 week period. Some of these renders, then the export into QuickTime, took as long as 20 hours to complete. The MBP allocated 1 CPU to Poser for this task.
At the same time, I was working in Motion, Final Cut Pro, and Cleaner, as well as having Safari and Mail open for about 16 hours of each day. I had to create numerous motion clips, bring them into FC, render clips in FC, then export as a movie...then have Cleaner create WindowsMedia and QuickTime clips for the web. Also used Mimic and GraphicConverter through each day.
I did not have any problems during the week. The MBP was on virtually 24/7 of the week processing clips. I was very pleased with the results. Most importantly, I was very pleased with the MBP's performance.

In addition to installing Windows in Boot Camp so that it will run instead of Mac OS X, you can also install Windows as a Virtual Machine so that Windows and the Mac OS can run at the same time. To use a Virtual Machine, you'd need software such as VMware Fusion, Parallels, or Virtual Box.
Note, however, that you may have some difficulty finding Windows 7 for sale. You may be stuck with Windows 8.1.
