Cups/hplip Segfaulting

HI boys'n girlz,
My problem in conclusion: i can't set any printer-options from any of my hp printers!
Description:
1.) Cups is starting up normally and i can go to cups interface. When I go to printers tab and try to click "modify printer options" nothing happens, i can't just go to this page!
2.) Trying hp-toolbox for changing settings... i can load hp-toolbox normally and click on all of my printer tabs, except of "printer-settings" tab... hp-toolbox is just segfaulting
3.) I can't look at printer options from any location (for example from okular)
First I thought it was a problem of latest hplip, i compiled an older version and tested it, but no difference.... removed cups completly and installed again, no change, too.
Maybe its some permission problem, etc? My user is in group "lp" and I tried set up an extra group for print-admins, which made no difference!
Someone's an idea? I don't really know where I could look further.
Greetz solid

Re-compiled hplip from ABS and still no joy.
Installed dbus-python; still no joy.
Ran 'qt3config' to populate 'qt_plugins_3.3rc'; didn't populate it
and still no joy.
Here's the output I get:

  • CUPS/HPLIP/GIMP not printing photos

    Hi all,
Just upgraded from cups 1.5.3-2 to cups 1.5.3-3 plus cups-filters 1.0.18-2 and when trying to print photos with the GIMP + Gutenprint, I get text:
    %PDF-1.3
    %1234
% This file was generated by pdftopdf
    %%PDFTOPDFNumCopies : 1
    %%PDFTOPDFCollate : false
    (etc)
I had to remove cups-filters and cups, then downgrade to cups 1.5.3-2.  At which point I could print photos again.  Any ideas?  I'm also using HPLIP 3.12.4-1.

patroclo7 wrote:Same problem, same workaround (downgrade cups and libcups and get rid of cups-filters).
    Same here too.

  • Trouble printing with my HP Deskjet printer using CUPS and hplip

tl;dr This 1,646 word post describes my frustration with CUPS and hplip. I cannot get my HP Deskjet F4400 set up with CUPS, and all the solutions I've tried don't work.
I'm running Arch Linux ARM on my Seagate DockStar, a small ARM-based "plug computer" that I use as a home server. My printer is the HP Deskjet F4480, which is part of the HP Deskjet F4400 series.
I previously had CUPS set up to share my printer with my home network, using hplip for the printer driver. I never upgraded CUPS or hplip because those versions worked fine, and I didn't want to break anything avoid breaking anything. The versions that I was using had to have been at least one to two years old.
Everything was working very smoothly... until a few days ago. The drive I was running Arch Linux ARM on became corrupt, so I had to install a fresh copy of the operating system. That meant losing all of the working versions and configuration files each application I had installed, including CUPS. I thought I had a backup image of the drive, but it didn't work when I tried to restore it. (Yes, it was stupid of me not to test my backup.)
Setting up CUPS was one of the first things that I wanted to do after reinstalling, since my family depends on the network printing functionality almost daily. Unfortunately, I could not get CUPS to work with my printer correctly. It wouldn't be able to display a list of drivers, HP's setup utility encountered an error adding it, and it threw various errors when I tried to print test pages. I ended up reading hundreds of forum posts, wiki articles, and CUPS/hplip tutorials to try to figure out how to properly set it up. I ended up spending a total of nearly ten hours trying to get the printer to print with CUPS, and it's still not working after all that work.
I'm going to explain in this post some of the many things that I've tried so far. I just removed all of the printing packages from my system and any extra files that were left behind. I'm now going to be installing all of the packages again and documenting everything that I have been trying to do to get it to work. I'll try to include exact error messages and logs where necessary.
    1. I first found this article on the Arch Linux ARM website on how to set up a CUPS printer. I didn't really want to use webmin, but I did it anyway so that I could follow the guide. I installed all the packages mentioned except for cups-pdf, since I didn't need print to PDF support. Everything installed smoothly, and I configured CUPS and webmin to allow access to other computers on the network. I started to notice problems in the instructions - /etc/rc.d/cups was actually /etc/rc.d/cupsd, /etc/printers.conf was actually /etc/cups/printers.conf, and webmin didn't actually add anything to the printers.conf file. I uninstalled webmin at this point because I didn't need it, and I decided I wasn't going to follow that guide with incorrect information.
    2. I then tried to set up the printer on my own using the CUPS web interface listening on port 631. I clicked the Add Printer button and it switched me to the HTTPS web interface. I then logged into the root account and was presented with the list of printers. My printer was listed as "HP Deskjet F4400 series (HP Deskjet F4400 series)", so I selected it and continued. I saw a list of printer models (PPD files) ending in CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.9. There was no entry for my printer, so I tried the "HP DeskJet Series (en)" one. I set the default options and chose Maintenaince->Print test page. I then got a ridiculously simple error: "Unable to print test page: No such file or directory". How do I even know what file or directory it's referencing? I read online that it may be because I'm not in the lp group, but root is indeed in there. I saw in the error log "Avahi client failed: -26". I started dbus and avahi-daemon just in case, but I still got that silly error. I restarted cups and the same error message occured.
    3. I researched online that pretty much the only way for my printer to have a driver would be to install hplip. Before installing hplip, I uninstalled CUPS, leaving cupsd.conf but deleting printers.conf. Then I installed CUPS and hplip together, with hplip requiring foomatic-db, foomatic-db-engine, and foomatic-filters. Everything seemed to install correctly. I started CUPS again and then ran hp-setup -i to try to install my printer. I selected USB and it found my printer, hp:/usb/Deskjet_F4400_series?serial=[printer serial number here]. I entered a simple name and then was told that no PPD file was found for the printer but that I could specify one manually. There were none I could find online; everywhere it just said to install hplip. I used the find command to find "f4400" and finally found 2 compressed PPDs located at /usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-deskjet_f4400_series-hpijs.ppd.gz and /usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-deskjet_f4400_series.ppd.gz. I gunzipped both of them and pointed hpsetup to the hpijs one, knowing that I was using the hpijs one when it was working before. It told me "Description for the file: HP Deskjet f4400 Series hpijs, 3.12.6". Hooray! I selected to use it, but then setup failed: "error: Printer queue setup failed. Please restart CUPS and try again." Ugh!
    4. I restarted CUPS and went into the hp-setup process again. It gave me the same printer queue setup failed error. I don't know if these entries in the CUPS error log are related or not, but these errors relating to foomatic showed up. I restarted CUPS again and this time used the non-hpijs file with hp-setup. This one was called "Description for the file: HP Deskjet f4400 Series, hpcups 3.12.6". It failed again with the same error and the same entries in the error log. I found lots of posts online about this error, but none seemed to have a solution that would work for me. Now I tried running hp-setup in debug mode with -g. Here is what it said before the error. I then tried to Google "debug: addPrinter() returned (0, Unable to connect to CUPS server)". I saw on an Arch bug report to install dbus-python and python2-gobject, as well as create a symlink for /usr/bin/python2 to /usr/bin/python. It didn't work - same error.
    5. I then tried to add the printer to CUPS via its web interface. Now there were two listed,  HP Deskjet F4400 series (HP Deskjet F4400 series) and HP Deskjet F4400 series USB [printer serial number here] HPLIP (HP Deskjet F4400 series). So, hplip added the second one. I tried both of them, but after clicking Continue the page started to hang. I got another stupid, undescriptive error. "Unable to get list of printer drivers: Success". I saw the same foomatic errors in the error log as before. I then started reading the ArchWiki page on CUPS, located here. I tried the blacklisting usblp. I tried changing the permissions on the device node, although this starts to become ridiculous that it is even required to do that. Nothing was working; the printer installation still didn't work with hp-setup or with CUPS. Then, I found what I was looking for: the exact error I had on the wiki page! It said for "Unable to get list of printer drivers" you should "Try to remove Foomatic drivers." WTF? Foomatic is required for hplip, and hplip is required for my printer. I can't do that. Forum posts say to try that or do the permissions or usblp thing. Nothing is working.
    6. I tried various other things to get it to work, even though I knew they probably wouldn't make it any different. I copied the PPDs from hplip to another folder and uninstalled hplip and foomatic. I then added them to /usr/share/cups/model and CUPS successfully found them and set up the printer. I reinstalled hplip and foomatic since they're needed for those PPDs to function, and I tried printing a test page. It failed. I tried using the CUPS web interface to modify the printer driver; nope, that wasn't going to happen: "Unable to get list of printer drivers: Success".
That concludes the list of some of the things that I have tried so far. I really want to get this printer working, but right now I am really fed up with CUPS and hplip. It's things like this that make me hesitant to recommend Linux to anyone else. So much manual configuration and tinkering the inner workings of things is required to do tasks that would be quite simple on Windows. For example, I can plug this printer into my Windows 7 machine right now, wait for the driver to automatically be installed and configured, and have a test page in my hands less than a minute after I first plugged in the USB cable. I can share the printer with any other Windows machine on the network by checking a single checkbox.
But back to my problem with getting the printer to work on my DockStar. I just uninstalled all of CUPS, hplip, and foomatic again and removed all of their files. I can walk through things to try that you guys post and then give you full logs of everything - just give me exactly what to do and install and the exact order to do it all in. I just don't know what to do at this point and am so frustrated with this that I'm about to give up.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this printer working? I know this was a very long post, but I just wanted to explain everything that I've tried and how nothing worked. I really hope that we can figure this out so that I'll be able to print, and maybe it'll solve a few other people's problems with their printers, too. Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for the help.

Had similar issue with my HP Deskjet F4500C All in one printer, here's what I did:
make sure these packages are installed or install them
    pacman -S cups cups-pdf hplip pyqt3 python2-pyqt
    pacman -S system-config-printer-gnome
    rc.d cups start
To add device and install hp driver:
    1. Run ‘hp-setup’ as root.
    2. Click ‘Show Advanced Options’ button and check-enable ‘Manual Discovery’.
    3. Enter IP address 192.168.59.63 in the ‘…device ID…’ entry and click ‘Next’ to install driver.
run system-config-printer as root, to add printer
    # system-config-printer
click “Add”, Select Device -> Network Printer -> input the IP address of the printer such as “192.168.1.3″, click “Find” -> “Process”
you should be ok from here, if not some further steps:
If you encounter the following error:
File “/usr/share/system-config-printer/newprinter.py”, line 1531, in getNetworkPrinterMakeModel
    debugprint (host + “: ” + args)
TypeError: cannot concatenate ‘str’ and ‘list’ objects
You should comment out the error line at 1531 of newprinter.py, and then continue to add the printer.
4). Finally, you can run hp-check to see what problems exists for the printer.

  • [solved] CUPS a nd HPLIP issues

I have this old Pentium II machine running LXbuntu 9.04. Everything is working fine on it, except it cannot be upgraded without breaking everything because it is ubuntu.
Also, the CUPS/HPLIP combo is working fine on it and my USB-connected printer is printing (this is old CUPS 1.3.9 and HPLIP is also not particularly new).
So, I installed Arch alongside, updated it, and tried setting up cups/hplip, but I can't get the printer to work.
I get to cusp webadmin, add printer, it finds it, but then when I select it, then select default options, like paper size, and click ADD, the new page appears after 2-3 minutes with this information:
    Add Printer HP_DeskJet_845C Error
Unable to get list of printer drivers:
    Success
    Add Printer HP_DeskJet_845C Error
Unable to get list of printer drivers:
    Success
Now, I don't want to be a malcontent seeing the glass half empty so I do appreciate the fact it successfully produced an error, but I would sure like to be able to print something.

  • [SOLVED] Network trouble with openvpn and hplip

    Hi everyone,
I use openvpn to protect my network traffic. But when my PC is connected to the remote openvpn server, my local printer (HP Officejet 4500) is unreachable (for printing and scanning). If I disconnect my openvpn client, all is ok : I can print and scan. Is there a way to have openvpn activated and be able to use hplip devices ?
I use an up-to-date arch x64 install under gnome 3, and printing with cups/hplip. Openvpn is managed thru NetworkManager.
    Thank you,
    Bruno.

  • [SOLVED] Problem with usb printer HP Laserjet P1606dn

This printer requires the instalation of a plugin for color and two-side printing.
When I execute the commando hp-plugin in root mode, appears this:
    "No protocol specified
    hp-plugin cannot connect to X server "
And of course, the plugin is not installed and I don't realize how to solve this problem...

make sure you have installed hplip and the hplip-plugin from AUR (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=44646)
after everything has been installed (cups hplip foomatic-db-engine hplip-plugin ...), run 'hp-setup -i'

  • Hp device manager

As per my understanding to add a printer after it is connected first I have to install the hp plugin using the hp device manager. Hp setup later asks for the file or it will download a .run file from internet.
But I dont see in my system where it gets saved. Because I have another computer which is not connected to internet. SO that I can use this file and install the hp plugin.
Or can any one suggest where can I download the hp1008 hp plugin .run file.

First time I tried in the following manner for hp laserjet P1008
I installed cups hplip and foomatic etc as per the wiki
Added user to lp group. Then connected the printer to usb and restarted and printer is shown in lsusb
Then I opened cups local and went to administrator and did find new printers.
    It showed my printer "HP_LaserJet_1020_USB_JL09AMB_HPLIP"
Then I did next and it showed a list of all printers. But it automatically selected hp laserjet P1008 hplip related ppd.
Then next is it says printer installed. Then when I do test page it shows status of printing as stopped and some error with the printer.
So some one suggested to install the hp-plugin for 1008 from hpsetup.
After hpsetup I deleted the previousy added printer in cups and again added the printer as above. Then the test page started.
So I felt that first use hp-setup and install the printer related plugin which is downloaded from hp website. That download is not saved  in file system I think .
Then using cups add the printer. then it looks it works.

  • HP Officejet Cannot Setup

I just installed arch for the first time so I know nothing about any of this printer stuff. I need a GUI for printing and scanning. I have tried EVERYTHING I can find on the wiki cups, hplip, xsane, etc.
    When I run hp-setup I get: [chad@archlinux ~]$ hp-setup -r

  • [SOLVED] HPLIP and foomatic really needed for CUPS?

    Hi there,
Wanting my HP Laserjet 5M printer to get up and running, at first glance it appears that i have to use the HPLIP package to get it to work with CUPS. When trying to install the HPLIP package pacman states that it also needs foomatic-db. Total installed size would be about 87Mb. Is it really necessary to install HPLIP and foomatic to get my Laserjet going under CUPS? I rather would install only the driver I really need, instead of a 'one for all' package. Or is the biggest part of the HPLIP and foomatic package really needed by the system?
    Regards,
    Frank

Ok, it appears that I only needed two things:
    1. The appropriate PPD file for the printer
    2. The package 'foomatic-rip' to be installed
I've downloaded the PPD for my laserjet printer from http://www.openprinting.org/printer/HP/HP-LaserJet_5M and after adding the printer via the CUPS webinterface using that PPD file of the printer (and after installing 'foomatic-rip') the printer seems to work perfectly.
Quite a difference to installing the whole 'hplip' and 'foomatic-db' packages and all their dependencies.

  • Xfprint4 Segfault

My first post and it had to be a problem...
Not been using Arch long (about 2 weeks), but loving it so far.  Got most things running the way I like except printing.
I am running XFCE and followed the wiki entry to install CUPS and hplip.  I installed and set up my printer (HP DeskJet on local USB port) through the localhost:631 admin interface.  I also changed the XFCE printing system (through Settings) to CUPS.
I was able to print a test page OK from the CUPS admin pages and thought everything was good.  Then I tried printing from Mousepad and got this error:
    xfprint4[8960]: segfault at 00000004 eip 08050fad esp bfb4e950 error 4
    Anybody seen this before?
    Thanks!

  • Problem with HP printer hplip is not starting

    My daemons line
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng portmap dbus hal network netfs hplip cups clamav alsa acpid !crond  kdm)
I have installed it using pacman. If I run pacman -S  hplip I get a message saying it is already there.

Okay, after a search I come up with the preferred printer installation method using the hp-setup command line tool. As this is supposed to be the 'HP' way to setup the printer and use hp-toolbox I decided to go this route. Naturally, the output is not promising:
    # hp-setup
HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 0.9.8)

    [ERROR]: No devices found.
[ERROR]: Error occured during interactive mode. Exiting.
Now, why the heck would it not find the device when it is already set up via CUPS and working properly in the desktop environment? The latest hplip version is 0.9.10, but I somehow doubt using the 0.9.8 would cause this type of problem as the printer I use is not a recent piece of machinery.

Anyone had such problems before? Just don't tell me this cursed device demands a sacrifice from freshly produced virgin paper sheets to chew on.
    Other non-pdf documents print succesfully.

just got hit with thie same error on my canon printer, and I was told I should try reinstalling the printer (not sure if that's meant for the driver or the actual printer in CUPS, but I intend to try both...

  • [CUPS] Unable to set my new CUPS server with an HP printer (solved)

    Hello,
I come from Gentoo and I just installed my new Arch Linux server on a notebook with 2 NIC ... Now, I'm trying to set the CUPS deamon to share printer (HP DESKJET 895Cxi) for 3 workstations in my LAN. Before, it was working (printer and linux ... has never been very good...). But now, I'm not able, and it's about 1 hour I'm looking for a stupid error that I don't know if it's important or not ...
(all is on my Wiki : http://pix-mania.dyndns.org/mediawiki/index.php/Cups)
Here are a list of installed package : cups ghostscript gsfonts hplip
    The printer (USB) :
    (lsusb)
    Bus 002 Device 004: ID 03f0:0004 Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 895c
    (dmesg)
usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
usblp0: Disabling reads from problematic bidirectional printer
    usblp0: USB Unidirectional printer dev 4 if 0 alt 1 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x0004
Current configuration (only change made to original configuration) :
    Listen <ip_serveur>:631
    <Location />
    Order allow,deny
    Allow From all
    </Location>
    <Location /admin>
    Order allow,deny
    Allow From all
    </Location>
    <Location /admin/conf>
    AuthType Default
    Require user @SYSTEM
    Order allow,deny
    Allow From all
    </Location>
When starting cups service, all is fine : I can use a workstation to browse the Web Interface ... but printer seems to be not detected since it tells "No printers." when clicking on "Printers" tab. So, I go to "Administration" tab and, under "Printers", I click the "Find New Printers" and again, it says : "No printers found.".
Not goot ... so, like I was doing with Gentoo, I click on "Add Printer" ... then, I receive a redirection to HTTPS ... click on the link (or wait) and nothing happend (timed out): web interface is broken for HTTPS ... I really got no idea why HTTPS is not working .
After that, when updating the configuration (with vim) and restarting the service, deamon won't stop and I have to send a "kill -9" to the cupsd pid ...
I look in log and I can just see this :
E [09/Jan/2011:18:19:55 +0100] Unable to set ACLs on root certificate "/var/run/cups/certs/0" - Operation not supported
I googled for one hour, but is not more working right now ...
    Some questions :
    - the printer is not detected? Is it because of the ACLs errors ?
    - what the hell is "ACLs" for cups ? Never seen that before ...
So, right now, I got a working HTTP but not working HTTPS, with no printer available ... very useless
This printer is working "well" with cups, since it's an old model and it's a HP printer, so is "fully?" working on Linux ...
Any idea on what to do/try now ?
EDIT: after that message, I just refresh the page (I'm using Chromium) and ... magically, HTTPS was working (after accept untrusted certificate for HTTPS?) ... Then, go back to "Find New Printers" and now, it was working. Printer has been added ... Seems to be OK, but the "Print Self Test Page" doesn't work right now because of this :
    Unsupported format 'application/vnd.cups-command'!

EDIT3: I tested the ppd from cups (and not hpijs) and got the same problem ... The latest idea was to unplug USB and plug to another USB ... and it seams to works ... Now, the test page print "fine" ...
So, I shared the printer over my LAN, and tried to print from a workstation ... it works fine now ... when looking error_log, I can see than there is no more Ghostscript error .
But I have a last question .. if somebody can answer ... When choosing a PPD file, I have the choice between 3 version :
    - hpijs, 3.10.9
    - hpijs, 3.10.9.11
    - hpcups, 3.10.9
Don't know why onlyl the HPIJS got the ".11" and not any others ... I selected this one and here is what Cups say about the printer :
HP_DeskJet_895C_USB_ES29Z231JKGO_HPLIP HP DeskJet 895C Local Printer HP Deskjet 895c hpijs, 3.10.9.11 Idle - "ready to print"
I hope when upgrading the system, I will not get error from PPD file not found ... With my current PPD file, I get (really not sure) this error, but print is working so, it doesn't matter :
E [09/Jan/2011:21:08:04 +0100] [CGI] Unable to create avahi client: No such file or directory
    E [09/Jan/2011:21:08:04 +0100] [cups-deviced] PID 5705 (dnssd) stopped with status 1!

Thanks for all .. hope you don't think I'm crazy ^^

WD and their lack of support for Mavericks:
A recent email from WD reads:
    Dear WD Registered Customer,
    UPDATE: November 1st, 2013
As a valued WD customer we want to make you aware of new reports of Western Digital and other external HDD products experiencing data loss when updating to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10.9). WD is urgently investigating these reports and the possible connection to the WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager and WD SmartWare software applications. Until the issue is understood and the cause identified, WD strongly urges our customers to uninstall these software applications before updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9), or delay upgrading. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks, WD recommends that you remove these applications and restart your computer. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks and are experiencing difficulty in accessing your external hard drive, please do not save anything to the drive, disconnect the drive from your computer, and contact Western Digital Customer Service at http://support.wd.com/country/ for further assistance.
The WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager, and WD SmartWare software applications are not new and have been available from WD for many years. However, solely as a precaution WD has removed these applications from our website as we investigate this issue.
    Sincerely,
    Western Digital
Which is basically Western Digital informing you that their out-of-date utilities don’t support Mavericks.
In any case those utilities are not the most effective. The moral of the story is: the first thing you should do after buying a WD drive is to format it as HFS Extended (Journaled) and not install ANY of their utilities but instead use reliable applications like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper - or Time Machine.

  • {SOLVED}SAMBA/CUPS Printer gone on both Linux and Windows Computers

    Greetings all,
Have found myself in a pickle that has got me scratching my head.
For a while now, I have had a headless server set up with Arch Linux with SAMBA and CUPS installed.  All computers in the house have had the printer set as default and have been working fine.  Have not had to print anything in about a week.  Wife went to print a coupon and told me that it would not print.
I went to my Windows computer and sure enough, the printer no longer even shows up on the network.  I have not touched my smb.conf or changed any CUPS parameters so I am stumped why the printer is no longer accessable.
When I go into my CUPS Web Interface it shows the printer and shows it as idle
Officejet_7300    Automatically setup by HPLIP        HP Officejet 7300 Series, hpcups 3.12.10a    Idle
Here is my smb.conf which like I mentioned earlier has not been touched.

The Storage drive is still accessable by all computers in the house.  This would be a piece of cake if I had actually gone in and changed something but nothing has been changed.  Not sure when the printer decided to take a hiatus.
Thanks as always for your help and if there is any other files or command output I can provide, let me know.

ewaller - good point, I actually did try shutting down the printer and turning it back on.  But to no avail.  I may not have touched any of the configuration files but I have run updates on the server via secure shell from my laptop.  So one of the updates may have caused this issue.  I believe that maybe the HP driver may have been updated and that could be the issue.  May need to look at going back to the older version of the driver.
WonderWoofy - Thanks for the response, as mentioned above (and actually it just came to mind when I was typing it) the updated driver may have caused the issue.  Drivers and support has come a long way in regards to Linux though there is definitely more work that can be done.
