Cursor Case statement
Hello All
I hava a performance issue to perform. I have a procedure that takes some parameters on input. then i create a cursore using thoses parameters like this :
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE MY_PROC (vNoA varchar2, vNoB varchar2, vDatedeb DATE, vDateFin DATE, vInfo varchar2, vPID INTEGER)
IS
Cursor tickets is select NoA, NoB, STARTDATE, ELAPSED_TIME, SWITCH_ID
FROM MY_TABLE
WHERE (SUBSTR(NoA,-9)=SUBSTR(vNoA,-9) OR SUBSTR(NoB,-9)=SUBSTR(vNoB,-9)) AND STARTDATE between vDatedeb AND vDateFin;
begin ........end;
what i want to do is to skip the use of the OR in the cursor creation statement using this rule :
if vNaB is nul then the WHERE clause will look like :
WHERE SUBSTR(NoA,-9)=SUBSTR(vNoA,-9) AND STARTDATE between vDatedeb AND vDateFin
if vNaA is nul then the WHERE clause will look like :
WHERE SUBSTR(NoB,-9)=SUBSTR(vNoB,-9) AND STARTDATE between vDatedeb AND vDateFin
Else the clause stays the same
Any one have an idea
Thanks in advance
Best regards
You should avoid FOR LOOP single row processing where possible. It is one of the slowest methods of data processing. All your logic can be replaced with a statement like the following:
INSERT INTO TABLE2
NoA
, NoB
, STARTDATE
, ELAPSED_TIME
, SWITCH_ID
, PID
SELECT NoA
, NoB
, TO_CHAR(STARTDATE,'DD/MM/YYYY HH24:MI:SS')
, ELAPSED_TIME
, SWITCH_ID
, vPID
FROM MY_TABLE
WHERE (
SUBSTR(NoB,-9) = SUBSTR(vNoB,-9)
OR SUBSTR(NoA,-9) = SUBSTR(vNoA,-9)
AND STARTDATE BETWEEN vDatedev AND vDateFin; In addition your query is running slow most likely because of the SUBSTR() function being applied to the NoA and NoB columns. In this case Oracle cannot use indexes. You may want to create a FUNCTION BASED INDEX on the NoA and NoB columns.

Case statement and Decode function both are not working in Select cursor.
I have tried both the Case statement and Decode function in Select cursor, but both the things are not working. On the other hand both the things work in just select statement.
See the first column in select (PAR_FLAG), I need to have this evaluated along with other fields. Can you please suggest some thing to make this work. And also I would like to
know the reason why decode is not working, I heard some where Case statement do not work with 8i.

Does this mean you are using 8i? Then scalar sub queries - selects within the select list, are not supported, along with CASE in PL/SQL.

Case statement 'when IN cursor'
Hi folks.
I am wondering if it is possible to use the IN command within a CASE statement?
I am trying to see if a parameter falls under certain dates in another table. I have a cursor declared which points at that column of dates, and my case statement is like so
case parameter_date when IN certain_dates then if_holiday := 1 else if_holiday := 2 end;
It doesn't like it when I try to compile. And my procedure is listed as being Invalid.
Thanks for any help :)I am wondering if it is possible to use the IN command within a CASE statement?Yes.

SQL>What we can't do is use PL/SQL cursors like this

^^^^^^^^^^^^^They're not variables. At least, not that sort of variable.

Hello All:
Is it possible to have the CASE Statement in the cursor? If so, could you please show me how to use it? I tried to use it as following but it did not work on Form Builder. I tried it on Oracle SQL *Plus and it worked there.
CURSOR tbl_chck_cur IS
SELECT chck_id,
NVL(sup_chck_id,'') sup_chck_id,
(CASE WHEN sup_chck_id = null THEN
(SELECT order_no from tbl_chck_lk where tbl_chck.chck_id = tbl_chck_lk.chck_id ) ELSE
(SELECT order_no from tbl_chck_lk
where tbl_chck.chck_id = tbl_chck_lk.chck_id ) END) order_no,
FROM tbl_chck;
Thanks in advance for any help.
KTFirst, get rid of that NVL on sup_chck_id. It does nothing. What do you want it to do, anyway???
And what is the second table "Tbl_chk_sub" in the from clause?
Ignoring tbl_chk_sub, this might work:SELECT T1.chck_id,
T1.sup_chck_id,
Decode(T1.sup_chck_id, null,LK1.order_no,Lk2.order_no) order_no
FROM tbl_chck T1,
tbl_chck_lk LK1,
tbl_chck_lk LK2
where LK1.chck_id(+) = T1.chck_id
and LK2.sup_chck_id(+) = T1.sup_chck_idIf the above does not work, you will have to find a work-around -- either do the lookup select in the post-query trigger, or create a stored function you can call from the select that returns the correct order_no based on the two columns, sup_chck_id and chck_id.
Do you know if we can use the SELECT statement inside the CASE statement?Sometimes Forms are several steps behind in adapting new sql features. So it looks like you cannot at this time. -

It is ok but i dont have to use view there.
i need to use without view, because this code has to be use in FORMS6i.

CASE statement in a dynamic page
I have written a query using a CASE statement in the select portion to evaluate column values and produce a text string. The query runs fine in sql*plus, but when I attempt to add the code to a dynamic page and compile it, I get the following error message:
ORA-06550: line 1, column 720:

Critical Error in wwerr_api_error.get_errors! SQL Error Message: ORA-06502:

I am running oracle 8.1.7.1.0 using Portal 3.0.9.8.1
I have written a function as a workaround, but would like to know why portal does not seem to like the "CASE" statement.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Hi Chetan,
I still get an error message even when I attempt to create a small dynamic page with your cursor. The error message is posted below. I am definitely putting the cursor declaration between <ORACLE></ORACLE> tags. Any Ideas?
Thanks,

Well, what else did you expect? CASE evaluates brances starting first one. If WHEN condition is not met it continues to next one. As soon as WHEN condition is met, THEN clause is executed after that CASE exits. You need to use IF statement, not case:

Hi all,
I have created a PLSQL code which is as follows:
create or replace procedure case_statement is
pi constant number(9, 7) := 3.1415927;
area number(14, 2);
cursor rad_cursor is
select * from radius_vals;
rad_val rad_cursor%rowtype;
begin
open rad_cursor;
loop
fetch rad_cursor
into rad_val;
exit when rad_cursor%notfound;
area := pi * power(rad_val.radius, 2);
case
when rad_val.radius = 3 then
insert into areas_case values (rad_val.radius, area);
when rad_val.radius = 4 then
insert into areas_case values (rad_val.radius, area);
when rad_val.radius = 10 then
insert into areas_case values (0, 0);
else
raise CASE_NOT_FOUND;
end case;
end loop;
close rad_cursor;
end case_statement;
When I execute this code I get these error messages:
ORA - 06592: CASE not found while executing CASE statement.
ORA - 06512: at "SCOTT.CASE_STATEMENT" line 24
ORA - 06512: at line 3
How do I resolve this problem?How do I resolve this problem? Well your code raise CASE_NOT_FOUND in the else clause. So either do something different rad_val.radius is not equal to any of the tested values or give your code an exception handler.
Cheers, APC -
Can I use case statements in triggers?
I created this trigger, it works BUT I don't like those parentheses at the begining, I would like
to change those parentheses for case statements, well that is my question, can you use case statements in triggers, how you would translate the following in case statement?

SQL Expression in decode function or case statement?
Can I put SQL expressions in decode function or case statement?
For example,
select le.profile, decode( select count(1) from profile_data where NAME= 'XXXX_AFTER' and object_id = le.profile, 0, 'N', 'Y')
from element le;
or
select le.profile, case WHEN ( select count(1) from profile_data where NAME= 'XXXX_AFTER' and object_id = le.profile) = 0 THEN 'N'
ELSE 'Y'
from element le;
None of the above work.
Can anyone tell me how to make it work?
Is there any workaround?
Thanks,
JYou simply needed and END to your CASE statement;
SQL> with profile_data as (
select 'XXXX_AFTER' name, 1 object_id from dual),
element as (
select 1 profile from dual union all
select 2 from dual)
select le.profile,
case WHEN ( select count(1) from profile_data where NAME= 'XXXX_AFTER' and object_id = le.profile) = 0
THEN 'N'
ELSE 'Y'
END new_col

CASE not found while executing CASE statement on Submit Form
Hi to all APEX users and developers.
I have several APEX applications and they are all working well, but recently I got one strange exception when I try to submit page:

Page has more than 120 items (most of them are hidden), so my first thought is that page has problem with posting so many items, but APEX error message doesn't hel me at all. Any help would be very appreciated :)
AlmirHi Almir,
actually it is the 100 page item limit. See (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17556_01/doc/user.40/e15517/limits.htm)
I also had a look into the source code and the code at the position where the error gets raised only supports 100 page items.
Can you have a look into the generated HTML code and look if you have a page items which is mapped to p_t101 or a higher number ?
I will file a bug to show a better error message.
Regards
Patrick

hi.
i have a case statement query. i wonder if in the select statement, can i do computation using different parameter from the main report to subreport?
for example, (qty * parameter)
if parameter = 0, i uses $P{abc} to multiply qty
if parameter > 0, i uses $P{xyz} to multiply qty
in this case, i've writen a sql (as below) but its does not execute.
select ....., (QTY *
case $P{QTY}
when 0 then ' * $P{abc}'
else ' $P{xyz}'
end
from....
hence, what should i do in order to get the right parameter to multiply with? pls guide. thanks.I'm not sure about these parameter placeholders which are specific to whatever report tool you are using, but the structure would be (assuming the parameter value would never be less than zero):
qty * case when $P{QTY} = 0 then $P{abc} else $P{xyz} end -
Case Statement in Answers Filter
Hi,
I'm trying to build a query in Answers that filters the data returned based on the current month number. If the current month is 1 then we want to show all 12 months, otherwise we want to show months less than the current month. If I use the following:
CASE WHEN extract(month from current_date) = 1 THEN "Calculated Values Monthly"."MONTH" >= 1 ELSE "Calculated Values Monthly"."MONTH" < extract (month from current_date) END
I get the error below. All works fine until I add the CASE.

ThxAccording to your requirements, when the month is January, you want all 12 months; any other number and you want months from 1 to "1 less than the current month number." Yes? Okay, here's what to do:
In the filter on your date column, click on the filter button, convert it to SQL and enter this:
MONTH(tablename.date_column) BETWEEN 1 AND CASE WHEN MONTH(CURRENT_DATE) = 1 THEN 12 ELSE MONTH(CURRENT_DATE)-1 END
Here's the logic:
a) When the current month is January, then the case statement will yield 12 and the filter will be:
WHERE MONTH(tablename.date_column) BETWEEN 1 AND 12 ...or all 12 months.
b) When the current month is any other month, say June, then the case statement will yield one less than the what the month number is, or in this case 5.
WHERE MONTH(tablename.date_column BETWEEN 1 AND 5 ...or all the months from 1 to 5 (Jan through May)
This will give you what you want... -
CASE statement in Calculated column
Hi Frzz,
I have below requirement in Calculated column with CASE statement. Could some one help me how to achieve this with case statement.
String = 0Hello
01Hello
012Hello
0123Hello
If 1st Character of the string is '0' then - 0Hello
1st 2 characters of the String is '01' - 22Hello
1st 3 characters of the String is '01' - 333Hello
1st 4 characters of the String is '01' - 4444Hello
Thank you.
Best Regards,
Krishna.Hi Krishna ,
Using IF and MATCH to do that: ( I took one of the conditions you specified )
IF(match("STRING1",'??0??'),'333Hello',"STRING1")

Also, END at the end of the case statement was replaced with END CASE.
