Custom brush with variable width

I am a beginner at Illustrator, so I'm not sure if this is possible. Is there any way to have a brush "repeat" itself over the width of a line, depending on the stroke weight, instead of just getting thicker?
As a simple example, imagine a custom brush that will behave as follows:
If applied to a line of, say, stroke weight = 4pt, this brush would make the line look like two parallel lines. Then, if the weight of the line was increased to 8pt, it would look like the 4 parallel lines. The default behavior seems to be that the original TWO parallel lines just get thicker, as the stroke weight is increased. I am looking for a way to make the pattern repeat not ALONG the line, but parallel to the line as its thickness is increased.

Not as you describe. What you would have to do is use the appearance and keep adding new strokes with an offset effect as welll but if it is an open path the new strokes offset wrap around the ends as if the orignal stroke was contained within a closed path.
the best way for open paths are a brush for each stroke width yoou need and save it as a library of such brushes.
Also visit the Illustrator Feature request form and feature request and make the request.

I am trying to achieve a hand drawn line effect with an illustration I am doing. I have built my art with the pen tool and have tried to apply both a custom variable width profile and a brush that I found online. They both look fine on the longer path segments, but they scrunch up on the shorter paths. Is there a way I can apply the brush or profile to all the paths and have the brush apply itself uniformly along the path for its length and then just stop rather than trying to fit the whole profile on the path no matter what length it is? I am using Illustrator cs6 on a mac with mavericks.

Apply a default stroke. Delete the wdith profile and the brush
Apply the effect "outline stroke"
Apply the effect "Roughen" with small values.
In the appearance panel "Roughen" needs to be below "Outline stroke"

How to code spark custom component with variable number of (skin)parts?

Hello. I'm trying to code a complex Spark custom component that may have a variable number of parts. To help you understand the requirements, the component can be visualized as an HSlider with a unlimited number of thumbs (as opposed to one).
How do I, in general, represent these thumbs in the host component as well as the skin? If I had a fixed number of thumbs, say 5, I could easily represent them as 5 button SkinParts declaratively. However, it's not immediately clear to me how to deal with a variable number of them.
I've studied the HSlider implementation as well as other components and can't find an example that fits this pattern. The closest thing that I can think of is to represent the thumbs as a DataGroup and provide a custom item renderer to render them. Couple that with the general HSlider behaviors that I need to preserve, such as the fairly involved local/global coordinate translations, I don't know whether the approach will work.

Help with Spark ComboBox with Variable width dropdown list

I have a Flex 4.0 app which uses a lot of Comboboxes. These combo boxes can contain relatively large items in relation to the actual combobox size.
I want the dropdown list width to expand to a size which will fit all the items it has to display - but only when the dropdown list is opened.
I know there was a way of doing this with the mx components however cannot find any information on this for Spark components.
Does anybody have a solution for this?

Equal spacing between the images of uniformed height but variable widths with AS3?

I have to figure out how to insert images with variable width with equal spacing intervals.
Here is where I got so far:

I can see that my images are being spread out on the page and if I change the number in var spaceBetween it affects the spacing. However the spacing is not uniformed. I can not figure why. Perhaps because I can not properly retrieve the image widths from the xml file. I assigned a width in xml file in the following manner:

I tried to implement it but images are still jambled together.
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I specify the actual width of the image in the XML file but then define it as a scaled value in the code later on (11th line at the bottom of the code):
    mc.height = 110;
This height definition will just give the width proportional to the height. Does it mean that I can not specify the height as it is?
Also can be there a mistake in the XML file? I just assigned the width number as it is in pixels for each image. Here is an example:

Variable Width profile for the brush tool keeps resetting

This problem is baffling me. I'm fairly new to Illustrator so I would appreciate some help. I’m using Adobe Illustrator CS6 with a mouse rather than a pressure graphics tablet.
When I create a stroke using the Paint brush tool I would like the stroke to contain a variable width profile. For example narrower at the beginning and end of the stroke but thicker in the middle. Now I can do this by selecting the line after I have made the stroke and choosing the Basic Brush Definition from the drop down list. But if i try to draw a new line the settings are reset again. I cannot create a variable stroke while creating the stroke. The brush definition keeps resetting to 5 pt Round and stroke width 1 pt. It would be much quicker if the stroke remained as a varying width profile as I created the strokes.
I noticed the same problem with the blob brush tool except it's even worse. With the blob brush tool the stroke weight always resets regardless of whether or not I try to set a Variable width profile.
I tried deselecting "New Art has Basic Appearance" mentioned on another forum but that didn't work.

Notice the variable width profile is maintained as the artists draws. It doesn’t keep resetting.

Just set the Colorization method of the new Brush to Tints or Tints and Shades from the dropdown in the lower right corner of the New Brush diaglo.

How to transfer Painter 12 with my custom brushes from old iMac to a new iMac both running Mavericks

Hi,
I just purchased a new iMac. Have Painter 12 on my older iMac and want to be able to transfer Painter 12, with my custom brushes to my new iMac. Tried Airdrop but got a message that it was damaged and that I should trash it. Does any know how to get Painter 12 with all my custom brushes to my new machine? Both are running Mavericks.

Thank you for your response. I did try to use Migration Assistant and I got as far as the two machines trying to communicate with each other. So I guess the answer to your question would be I tried, I failed and it worked until a certain point. I understand that there are other ways to connect the machines, I would have to see if I have the proper cables to do so. Airdrop did get data to my new machine and that tells me that they do see each other on the network. I do not know why they did not see each other via Migration Assistant. I assume that I could go to Corel's site and download Painter 12 to my new machine, ( my new machine does not have a disk drive ), but I will not have my custom brushes etc. and would have to totally make them up in the fresh install version and I am trying to avoid that.
You are probably correct in saying that Painter 12 probably needs a full reinstallation to work properly. Am I to assume that Migration Assistant will do a full reinstallation, including my custom brushes? I guess I am a little confused here.

Custom component with additional tags

Hi. I need to write complicated custom JSF component.
I know how to write simple custom components, and receive String variables from tag attributes e.g.

How can I write such component? How can I receive collections in my component? How can I work with additional tags in my component.

Setting up Custom Brushes and ToolSets

I created a custom panel using configurator. In that custom panel I created a pop-up panel button, but the pop-up panel button doesn't trigger a pop up panel ? I want the pop up panel to have two tabs one to save custom brushes and custom tool settings, and those panels which save custom tool brushes and custom tool settings, saved with the custom panel.
The results is the custom tool panel that I created with the custom pop-up can be loaded into photoshop as a extension with the custom tool brushes and custom tool settings along with it, so it's not tied directly within photoshop but rather with the extension, I hope I made myself clear.

Can't make a workable custom codec with ProRes 422 (HQ)

I've only just now found that there is a Support Community for Compressor. Wish I'd known sooner.
I see my version of Compressor is 3.5.3.
I've been on a little saga.
I started out with the challenge of converting some MP4 files from a Blackberry Playbook into ProRes 422 (HQ) for editing in Final Cut. I used Compressor and the task looked fairly straight forward. I used the ProRes setting in the Compressor, converted my files and imported them into Final Cut. Video was fine but I soon found out that the audio needed rendering every time I put a clip into the Timeline. I went on-line to various chat rooms with this problem. Pretty soon a fellow was telling me that the ProRes 422 (HQ) setting in Compressor had "Audio Pass-through" as default and that this was the cause of my problem. Change it, he said, to "Linear PCM".
It took me a fair while to figure out that the ProRes setting in Compressor did not allow itself to be modified and that I'd have to create a custom preset if I was to make these changes. I set about to do that. I was able to select "QuickTime Movie" and then in "Video/Settings" choose "ProRes 422 (HQ)", in "Audio", "Linear PCM". This did solve the audio problem. Now files imported into Final Cut did not need rendering. But another problem became evident.
Whereas the ProRes 422 setting that came with Compressor in its summary page listed: "Width" and "Height" as "(100% of source)", the custom ProRes 422 (HQ) setting I'd just created has "Width" and "Height" as "320" and "240". In short the 19:9 aspect ratio of the original footage was lost. What I got both in the conversion and in Final Cut was a squished SD image.
I've played like heck with Compressor trying to see if there was some place I could get this custom version of ProRes to correspond to the aspect ratio seen in the Audio Pass-through version that came loaded in Compressor. No luck. All very mysterious.
My next step was to look to create another custom codec that would have the proper 1280 X 720 ratio. Turns out "HDV 720p 30fps" does, so now I've been converting to that. Looks fine in Final Cut - proper picture and sound.
I've been playing around a bit more and see now that I can create a custom setting using "Apple Intermediate Codec". I've tried it and it works too.
So after all this, my question: Should I be using that codec instead? Or does it really matter what codec I use for editing? Is the only real issue what codec I decide to use to output?
And while I'm at it: Does anybody have ideas why trying to create a custom setting with ProRes 422 (HQ) does not work - for my purposes at least.
I must admit this converting codecs is pretty new to me. Hopefully with time this experience will get easier and clearer.

Setting a Compressor ProRes Custom Setting:
1) Pick Apple ProRes 422...
2) Drag the PreRes 422 setting to the Bach Window. You can only make a custom setting from the Batch Window...
3) Select enable for the audio. Click on setting to make sure it is set right. Uncheck Allow Job Segmenting... Make sure Streaming is set to none*....
4) Select the Geomenty tab... Pick Custom (16:9):
5) Click Save As and name your custom setting...
6) You new custom setting will show up in the Custum folder for later use:
Another thing you can do is make Droplet of this custom setting. Menu... File... Create Droplet... Save the Droplet into a folder somewhere on your computer.
A Droplet will start the transcoding automatically. Drag the Droplet onto a video icon and let it do it's job.
* ProRes doesn't need the Fast Start setting. If this is set it will take almost twice as long to do the encoding. Same with Allow Job Segmenting using Qmaster.
I did the above on the fly and hope everything is clear for you to understand.

How do I create an interactive PDF file with variable data

We would like to basically do a 'mail merge' of our list of customers with an interactive PDF file (including videos, menus, etc - not just form fill out and web links) to create a single PDF file that contains multiple mail pieces ... one for each customer ... with each mail piece being customized for that customer. Customizations would include different greetings (Dear Bob, Dear Dana, etc), as well as different charts based on data unique to the customer, different photographs, etc.
I've seen that InDesign and Acrobat Professional can be used to create an interactive PDF (such as from http://tv.adobe.com/watch/ask-the-adobe-ones/14-calling-rufus-about-interactive-pdf-making). However I don't understand how I can insert data from a database, csv file, excel file etc into the PDF file so that each page, or each set of pages, within the PDF can be customized.
Can anyone point me to a tool to use for this?

For that kind of volume and unattended operation, you want InDesign Server – which is the server/high volume edition of INDD.
